Slow Vba Running With Xlsm Files?

i have a simple question regarding vba code involving opening/eleboration/closing of different excel workbooks' format. I saw that with xls/xlsx the macro works with relatively high speed, but it is very slow when it comes to xlsm file. Is there an explanation? Does a command which enhance speed for xlsm file exist?

Save As Xlsm

Aug 23, 2008

My office just converted to 2007 and I am running into a problem with code used to save a workbook. I need to use a dialog box as the file could be placed in several different locations which the user needs to choose.

When the save as dialog box opens it defaults to being saved as the xls type. I would like to modify the following code so the file type drop down defaults to the xlsm type. Below is my code.

Sub SaveFile()

Dim Fdate As String

myDate = Range("HeaderPage!B13")
myFile = Range("HeaderPage!b8") & "_" & Range("HeaderPage!b9")

Application.Dialogs(xlDialogSaveAs).Show myDate & "_" _
& "_" & myFile & ".xls", 1, , , , False
End Sub

Viewing XLSM On Android Tablet?

Aug 9, 2012

I'm trying to open a .xlsm on an Android tablet with only OfficeSuite installed. Initially, that didn't work. After installing a DocumentsToGo application, it shows me my spreadsheet, but none of the .jpg's that are visible in the original file. I copied all .jpg's to the tablet; both the .xlsm and the folder with the pictures are in the same parent folder, to simulate the original folder structure in Windows. Still the pictures will not show.

Save XLSM As PDF And Mail To Recipients?

Sep 22, 2013

I know there are plenty of examples on how to do this at a basic level but I am looking at making it a bit more custom.

I would like to put some variables on a sheet in a workbook and use those to drive the behavior of the code.

EG I would like to specify the save-as-pdf path (eg c:users.etc), the email addresses to be emailed TO (specify a range eg A1:A14 where each cell has a different email addy in it), like wise for CC and then BCC (new ranges), also be able to specify subject of email (EG Cell F1.value is email subject).

Cannot Open XLSM File Properly

Feb 16, 2014

I made the excel file with the VBA source code, saved it, opened it many times, and all at sudden I cannot open it anymore. When I try to open the file I get the following screen:

actually, Excel asks me if I want to enable macros or not, but this window is different than usual window:

when opened file with macros works fine.

So, in my case I click the Enable Macros button of the first picture and my file seems to open in some hidden instance, because the file name isn't writen in the title of the Excel window.

When I close the Excel window it asks me if I want to save changes to my file, and that proves that it was opened in some hidden instance of the Excel.

I have to say that I was not playing with the security options of hiding any part of the file that I want to open, and which doesn't open properly.

Vlookup To .xlsm Macro Is Incredibly Slow

Jul 23, 2009

This is designed to be run on bid proposals, to calculate special discounts. My idea was that whoever was designing the bid would open this file, which has the discount information and the macro, and then run the macro on the file containing the bid.

This macro works. It worked really fast when it was in my personal.xls and referenced an .xlsx file for the vlookup. It was slower, but still tolerable, when I moved it to the .xlsm file and it still refenced the .xlsx file (an oversight on my part). Now that I fixed the vlookup reference to the .xlsm file, the same one that the macro itself is in, it has slowed to a crawl. What is going on?

Using XLSM Spreadsheet As Mail Merge Data Source?

May 13, 2014

I have a database that uses a few basic macros that I would like to use as part of a mail merge ---> Form Letter. Word does not seem to support the use though of xlsm files as a data source though.

Full disclosure - I am using a mail merge form letter to automate the creating of a report that has a LOT of place holders. I 100% realize that there are ways to do this within Excel that would be much cleaner and much easier, but truthfully, I DO NOT have the skills to write the code for it. (The macro I am using was wrote by a wonderful member of these forums. (Snakehips))

Do I have any work arounds to the xlsm / mail merge debacle? Is there a method that I could do that doesn't require years of VBA experience?

Excel 2010 :: Error / Source Not Found With Certain XLSM Files

Nov 17, 2011

I am working with Excel 2010.

There are certain .xlsm files in our system (some have macros and others don't) which generate "Error: Source not Found" in the Edit Links dialog box when the Check Status button is pushed. However, the source location is correct, as you can click on Open Source and it will open the correct file.

For simplicity of explaining my issue, consider the following scenario. In my workbook "Corn Production Summary.xls_" I link to 2 source files: "Iowa.xlsm" and "Nebraska.xlsx" (Note: The extension of the summary file doesn't matter. This error happens regardless of what the summary is.)

When I open "Corn Production Summary" I am prompted to update values. I select Update and the file refreshes and recalculates appearing to have updated all values (i.e. no error messages). However, the values from Iowa.xlsm did NOT update and there was no error message indicating that the values didn't update.

To confirm this, I go to Data>Edit Links>Check Status in "Corn Production Summary" and I see that Iowa.xlsm has the "Error: Source not Found" error. I click on Open Source and once the file is open, my data in the summary file will update.

One work around was to do the following process (with the summary file closed):

1) Iowa.xlsm and Save As Iowa.xlsx (removing macros if needed)

2) Save As Iowa.xlsx as Iowa.xlsm (overwriting the file that is currently there and readding the macros)

3) Open the summary file and both Iowa and Nebraska work just fine now.

There are a lot of files like this, and because Excel doesn't prompt us that it isn't really getting the values from these certain .xlsm files we would have to search in "Edit Links" for each file to make sure that they really are updating.

Excel 2007 :: Found Unreadable Content In Filename (XLSM)?

Feb 22, 2013

I have an excel 2007 file which contain a lot of macros. File size is 100MB. This file is not developed by myself, it's post in the webpage and let the members of the page to download on daily basis.. I've been downloading and using this file for over a year with no problem until this week.

Problem: During opening the file. There is a message box popped up, saying "Excel found unreadable content in filename.xlsm'. do you want to recover the contents of this workbook ? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes." When I click "yes", excel is trying to repair the file. Once it's done, I could see only the contents, however, all the macros are gone. When I copied this very same file and open in other notebooks, everything is working fine...

Assumption: Couple days ago, I was writing/testing macros in other workbooks and also opened this particular file. I might did something stupid which cause this problem...

During the same time, I used to have the same problem with another file. I solved it by copy and open with another PC then copy macros and paste it to the file on my notebook.

Excel 2010 :: Right Click (save As) Saves Inoperative XLSM File

Mar 22, 2012

Excel 2010, Win 7. I have attached a .xlsm file to an email. The contained macros run perfectly, and one of them is "public" so it shows up in "Developer - Macros", and "Customize Quick Access Toolbar" lists.

If the recipient clicks and drags the attachment to a folder, or copy/pastes the attachment, it works fine. (Macros are enabled, etc.)

However, if the recipient right clicks on the email attachment, and selects "SAVE AS" from the item list, the file saves, has the right name and extension, looks ok (the icon has the exclamation point, etc), and it is the correct size, but it simply will not load. You can double click, do a file open, etc. but it will not load. It's a hidden workbook, but if you "open it" and Alt-F11 to show the VBA editor, it isn't there!

It's not stopping the project - we simply tell them to click/drag, etc. but I totally do NOT understand why that happens.

Linked Documents Cell Changes

Feb 7, 2014

I have several excel documents all linked to one unique excel document which I will call document A.

Document A is a performance spreadsheet where I have percentages, sales figures and times, for my sales team.

Each sales person has their own unique dashboard (another excel document) that I am currently trying to finalize.

Their personal dashboards have pie charts with text boxes. The text boxes within the charts link up to their relevant cells in document A.

When Document A is open and I open 1 of the sales person's dashboards. Everything looks good and works, however.

When I close document A the dashboard information changes. For example, the dashboard information could be showing 25% but when I close document A it reverts to 0.25

If I close down the dashboard and open document A back up, change it to 30% then close it. The dashboard recognizes the change BUT reads as 0.30. This is the same with them all.

The only fix I have figured out is creating another tab in Document A then duplicate of all the information required for the dashboards then save the cells as TEXT (as opposed to currency, percentage etc).

This kind of defeats the object because I have formulas set up in Document A and don't want to be doing twice the work.

Formula That All Reference To Different Documents

Aug 15, 2008

I have 330 lines of formula that all reference to different excel documents. These files are donated by a 4 digit number. i.e. 4186.xls.

The main document that looks at these files needs to ability to acknowledge changes in the 4 digit number in its formulas and look at a different file if necessary.

EG. =sum("4186.xls"!E4:E5)

A very simple example of the formula i am using. I just need to actively change the 4186 that is in the formula to whatever is in the contents of another cell.

I might just be stupid. Infact, i admit i am no expert. That was my first =SUM formula actually.

Links To A File In My Documents

Aug 21, 2009

I have a template that I wish to distribute to others. It will link to a second file (also distributed by me) that will be in each users' "My documents" folder (or "Documents" in Vista). I currently have the template set to look at "C:" as that is common for everyone. Turns out that creates other problems. However, now each user's file location will be unique due to the path of their documents folder

Question, is there a robust way to automate the finding of the linked file in the template without having each user "relocate" it? Reason is the template will be updated frequently and I want to ease their pain by not making them go through this every time.
