Search Macro

Oct 24, 2008

I am not very well versed in macro writing (I specialize in hardware). I am trying to help one of my users create a search macro that will parse an open workbook for a string value and insert the row(s) associated with that value into a new sheet.

Userform To Control Macro Features. Macro = Search For File Type

Jan 26, 2009

I have a macro that I found somewhere on the net to look within a folder and list all the files of a certain file extension.

The macro to do this is in the attached example and is called 'Get_File_Names_Within_Dir_ext'.

I have created a basic userform outline, 'UF1' for the user to define:
Select File Extension
Select Folder to Search
Destination Sheet

I just don't have any idea how to sync the two.

If you type 'exe' into 'TB1_File_Extension' of 'UF1' the macro should search for '*.exe' files within the specified folder.

The search folder 'RefEdit1' box should open a windows explorer box (or some such) so that the user can select the directory in which to search for the previously specified file extension.

'TB2_Destination_Sheet' is a text box for the user to type the sheet within the workbook in which to list the files found within the specified directory.

'CB1_Find_Files' should activate the macro to find any files for the specified criteria.

There is also a Button 'Find File Types' in Sheet1 of the file which should activate the userform 'UF1'.

VBA Search For Column And Add To Macro

Mar 14, 2014

I'm trying to simplify a macro so that I don't have to manually find the column to change each time. Basically, I want the macro to search for a column that contains [alt enter], and then add that column name to the existing macro below.

I tried various "find" or "match" comands in VBA, but am unsure how to execute the command so that the result of the find/match affects the highlighted line below.

VB:

Sub Seperatefromlinebreaks()
'working for active sheet
'copy to the end of sheets collection
ActiveSheet.Copy after:=Sheets(Sheets.Count)
Dim tmpArr As Variant
Dim Cell As Range

Macro To Search Whole Workbook?

May 8, 2014

I've had a look at various coding to create a macro to search excel.

The issue I have is several work sheets within the work book but they're always inactive unless opened. From the 1st work sheet I've got menu buttons that open a specific worksheet, then there's a button to click to take user back to 1st worksheet and close the 1 they were looking at and making it inactive.

Following code is what I use to open and close sheets:

[Code] .........

The above works fine for opening and closing.

But if I use Excel's standard CTRL + F search facility and change options to search workbook, it doesn't work because every other sheet other than 1st sheet is inactive.

How To Get A Macro To Search Another Workbook

Jul 19, 2014

I have a simple spread sheet that I made that takes the first letter of a name entered into cell (A1), combines it with the last name entered into cell (B1), and inputs that combined information into cell (E1).

It works how I need it to for the most part but... I need Excel to look at a completely separate workbook (containing four sheets), and search the entire workbook for exact matches of the combined information in (E1). If it finds a match elsewhere in that workbook I want it to add a 1 to the end of the combined name. I basically want it to increment the number until it does not find one that already exists in the other workbook.

Example: Cell (A1 contains Bob), Cell (B1 contains Smith). Currently Cell (E1 would display bsmith) - I need for Excel to search the other workbook, and if it finds a bsmith anywhere in that workbook add a 1 to the end making it (bsmith1). If it finds (bsmith1) increment it to (bsmith2) and keep going up by one number until it does not find any other matches. The other workbook is located on a mappedshared network drive.

Complicated Search Macro

Aug 20, 2007

I'm in the process of decoding a mass amount of data that will be incoming shortly. The data will be formatted as shown below. What I would like to do is have a macro that between two full seconds (for example 10:11:48:0 to 10:11:49:0) would find the mode of the RSSI values, paste that with a time value that is in the general excel format. (I.E. 10:11:48 = 0.42484). When all is said and done, what I have access to should look like the second string of posted data. I can get the time cleaned up on my own, but I'm having trouble with the loop macro that will find which cells to use for the mode.

Search And Input Macro

Nov 2, 2009

I have a document with multiple sheets that contain data for a specific date and are set up in chronological order. The last sheet(Final Sheet) has each row as a different date in a chronological range of 3 yrs and each row has 5 cells of data.

I need to write a macro that will take a 5 cell row from each sheet and place it in the correlating date/row in the Final Sheet. Each sheet is labeled as the date for which the data is from so the macro needs to match the sheet title to the date in column A of Final Sheet. Then place the 5 cells from the sheet into the correlating date/row. The macro would need to loop through and do this until it reaches the Final Sheet.

Search Using Wildcard In Macro

Dec 29, 2011

I have a spreadsheet where there are lines of different Wage Types but only certain combinations are needed. For example I have Pay Area 1234 which needs all wage types except those beginning with a 9.

To do this I have set up Sheet1 to look like this:

12341
12342
12343
12344
12345
12346
12347
12348

and not 12349 as I do not require this type.

The problem here is I need to add a wildcard to the end of these so it finds anything that starts with 12341 etc.

Sheet1 contains the personal details of employees and I have concatenated the Payroll Area and Wage type in column D.

Code:

Sub deleterows()
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Set MySheet = Sheets("data")
LR = MySheet.Cells(Rows.Count, "D").End(xlUp).Row
For i = LR To 2 Step -1

VBA Macro To Search All Sheets For Value

Nov 19, 2009

I have attached 2 workbooks to illustrate the problem I am having.

One workbook contains a receipt. The macro is asking the user to input information into the receipt form, however one piece of information needed for the receipt, the balance due, needs to be pulled in from another workbook which contains the accounts receivable information for each family. Each sheet in this workbook is named the name of a child.

This is where I’m stuck. When the user inputs the child’s name I would like the vba code to search through the sheets in the second workbook and return the balance due for the name entered which is in cell “J42” on the sheet named the same as the child’s name the user entered.

Once it has found that sheet and entered the balance due on the receipt in cell “C10”, I would like the code to copy the amount being paid from the receipt cell “J6” to the next blank row in “Column H” of the Accounts Receivable sheet for that child.

The third workbook I have but wasn't able to include is a database I tried to create listing all the children because I was told that would be the best way to do this, but I couldn’t figure out how to get what I need from that document either. (I think trying to change how I was doing things in mid stream just made it more difficult and I don’t have adequate information in the database document to get what I need.)

The one other issue I have is making sure the user enters the name exactly as it is in the other workbooks, and I thought of having a dropdown box that pulls in the names from the database and having the user select the name from the dropdown box so it will be an exact match, but I have no idea how to have the macro allow the user to choose from a dropdown box.

Macro To Search All Worksheets

Jul 30, 2007

I've been writing a little macro to prompt a user with a form which lets them select 2 reports to open and also lets them select a month. One report contains financial data for the month and the other report contains all data for the year. So each month someone has to copy data from report 1 into report 2.

I have so far been able to:
-create form with error handling to open files
- select values from a pivot table in report 1
- search pivot table 1 (single sheet) and copy the Name and Total $ fields

what i haven't been able to do:
When i get the data from report 1 I switch to report 2. When i get to report to i need to search all the sheets in order to find a name with the original Name field from report 1 (I then have a HUGE case statement that will tell me if name = this and month = that then paste in cell $x$y). However, whenever i try to run my search across all sheets it will only find values on the sheet that is selected at the time.

I've attached my search code below, I would appreciate any help i can get as I've spent all day trying to resolve it with no luck

Function findinworkbook(TruncName)
Dim ws As Worksheet

On Error Resume Next

For Each ws In ThisWorkbook.Sheets
' Find Function
Cells.Find(What:=TruncName, After:=ActiveCell, LookIn:=xlFormulas, _
LookAt:=xlPart, SearchOrder:=xlByRows, SearchDirection:=xlNext, _
MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False).Activate
ActiveCell.ClearComments
ActiveCell.AddComment
ActiveCell.Comment.Text Text:="test" 'test to mark where the matched cells are
On Error Goto 0

Next
End Function

Formula / Macro To Search For A Particular String

May 20, 2009

how to use a formula or macro or whatever that is applicable to solve my current issue.

For example:

I've the following text below. The prefix of "atest", "bgo", "crun" and "dfly_c" are fixed pattern, however, the text after prefix will change accordingly.

atest_myhomeisfar
bgo_runfast
crun_b:veryfast
dfly_c:bluesky

Now my request is, I would like to have the final output as per below. Notices that there are some additional numbers behind the text (with semicolumn).

Final output:
atest_myhomeisfar:1998
brun_veryfast:2009
cfly_bluesky:1790
dfly_c:bluesky:1800

My question is, is it possible to create something to handle this issue? I mean something that will seach thru a particular fixed pattern as mentioned above and add the number behind it?

I would like to do it one at the time (one prefix at a time). Not mass searching and adding.

For example:
Search all "atest*" pattern and add an additional number behind.

Macro To Search Text & Return Values

Jan 9, 2009

I have a spreadsheet containing several names. I want a formula or macro that will search a string of text within the cell. If the text exists within the cell, I need a code to populate. For example,

In cell E2, search for a phrase anywhere in the cell that contains "COM". In cell H2 look for the exact phrase "ASB". When "COM" is found in E2 and "ASB" is found in H2, in cell U2 return the value "COM ASBTVL".

In my case, E2 may not contain "COM", it may contain "DEN" instead. In that case, if E2 contains "COM", and if "H2" contains "SVC", then in U2 populate "COM APPSVC"

I'm guessing in my code I will need to list a set of criteria that will search row by row and return certain values when finding the text I specify.

Would a macro be best for this? Does anyone know how I would put that together?

() Creating A Search Command Button (Macro)

Feb 5, 2009

I am trying to create a uniform stock database for my company. Thus far, I have 2 worksheets. The first is a face sheet, for the user to interact with. This face sheet has a number of drop down menus on it allowing them to select "Type" and "Size" of the item they need. This information is then translated (by a hidden table) into an item code.

The second sheet contains a list of all the uniform items currently in stock. Each item has its individual code that correlates to the code the face sheet generates.

My question is regarding a search macro.

I want the user to be able to click a command button on the face sheet, labelled "search". This would then take the generated "Item Code" and search for it on the second worksheet. I am aware that it would be very easy for them to simply copy the code into "find" on the second sheet, however it needs to be as easy and quick to use as possible.
