Select Random Number From List

View 6 RepliesI need a macro that will select a random number between 1 and 6. ie select the number of a dice. It needs to input 1 random value into one cell and another random value into another. Like the dice values of a monopoly game.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got a list of items (formatted alphanumeric) in column G starting at row 2. I would like a cell formula that would randomly select 30 items from this column and place them in column H starting at row 2. One caveat is that the list must remain static once created. If the Rand()function is used, it recalculates whenever the worksheet is updated so that might be a problem.
Cell formula to do this? A VBA solution would be OK as well.
I would like to know how I can get excel to randomly select one line of data for each of the people listed below (so one for bob, one for jenny, one for Trish etc.). I have been trying a mixture of vlookup and rand but to no avail, below is just a sample list but I would like to try it on a large set of data. I have been able to get a random transaction but not one for each person.
Code:
a1
b
c
d
e
f
g
h
i
j
2
3
4
REF_ID
NAME
DATE
BILL TOTAL
[Code] .....
I have a spreadsheet of 1000+ companies and I want to take a random sampling of 100 of them. I would assume this could be accomplished by auto-filling a numerical value to each line of data (which I did), then scrambling only the column with the numbers (which I can't figure out), and then selecting the entire text and resorting it to put the numbers back in order and then just work with the first 100 rows (which I can do, if I knew how to make the numbers random).
My objective is to take two different random counts of numbers written in column b, ranging from B9:B66. However I want to highlight the specific fields listed in the example below, and pull random numbers from those selected fields only. Then I want to pull another set of random numbers in the same column B9:B66, however using a different specific set of fields within column B; as shown in the second random formula string. Use the Press 9 feature to randomly select the two different numbers. What this attempt is trying accommplish is selecting one boy, one girl who have assigned numbers adjacent to their names(name field populated in column c).
What am I doing in correctly?
HTML Formula written to B70
=INDEX(B9:B66,RANDBETWEEN(1,COUNTA(B9,B13,B15,B16,B17,B20,B21,B23,B25,B31,B33,B34,B35,B37,B38,B39,B41,B42,B44,B45,B47,B50,B51,B52)),1)
Formula written to B72
=INDEX(B9:B66,RANDBETWEEN(1,COUNTA(B10,B11,B12,B14,B18,B19,B22,B24,B26,B27,B28,B29,B30,B32,B36,B40,B43,B46,B48,B49,B53,B54,B55,B56)),1)
I want to create a long list of 10,000 random numbers between -100 and +150, but do it so that the average of all the random numbers equals 20.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am kind of new to Excel programming and would like to know if there is a solution to my problem. What I need is to have a dropdown list (I know how to make this) then select an item from the drop down, then based on the name i select, Excel automatically fill up the rest of the cells.
For example, from the drop down list I select the company name then Excel automatically type the address, phone number, Fax number and the contact name of the company for me in corresponding cells. Is there a way to do this?
I have been thinking about a name selection tool that would automatically pick a few names for internal audit. I can handle the useform launch and other basics but here is what I see happening.
1. The empname! sheet contains a list of all the company employees, with employee number in column A, names in column B and an "X" or blank in column C.
2. The main sheet called auditmaster! contains nothing currently
3. When the code is ran the userform prompts the user to select how many individuals to audit by entering an integer in a textbox.
4. If the user selects 5 for instance, the code will run and will select 5 random employees for internal audit. It does this by first checking column A of the empname! sheet and seeing what the highest and lowest numbers are. This would create the range for the random function.
Next if there is an "X" in column C of empname! sheet, those employees numbers are excluded from the random choice.
Following this the function will select the appropriate number of individuals to audit using random again and place their names/number on the masteraudit! sheet.
The detail should be placed as the following, employee number goes to column F, name to column G. Starting with row 10. The code should also number the results 1 - however many were selected for audit in column E.
I want to random select one of the following,red,yellow,blue,green,orange & white. (as text) in cells A2:A1001.

I wanted it to select a random cell representing a seat and highlight that cell in someway (e.g. change the background colour or text colour) and display the data within in in a cell in the middle of the sheet.
I have used formula to achieve the later half of the problem but am unsure how to highlight the cell. my current solution uses f9 to refresh the data. Ideally I would like to attach the behaviour to a command button. I have attached the excell sheet and have highlighted the problems I am having.
How to copy and paste 50 values randomly from column A in sheet1 to Column A in sheet2.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI would like to use the random function on a range of select numbers. I tried randbetween() but it won't work for me since my range of numbers are not in sequence (e.g. 1,2,4,6,7,8,9,10,21). Using randbetween() might result in numbers not within my range..
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to select an x number of random selections within the selection.
Basically, lets say A1:A100 is selected, im going to have a inputbox asking how many to select, you put 10 in the inputbox, and then it randomly chooses 10 from A1:A100 and highlights them
This seems easy enough, i can do the input box and know the random function. just not sure how to set the beginning point and the ending point with Cell locations and then have it highlight those selections... a for loop I'm guessing?
I'm trying to create a staff rota which will populate a rota randomly when prompted - I have been trying to find some way of connecting the random lists and the staff names, though this has proved difficult (to say the least!). How best to proceed? I'm also fully aware of the possibility that my present design will also double book people (place then on reception and telephone duty simultaneously).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am looking at ways to select 81 winners at random from a spreadsheet with 5000 + names on it. I have tried assigning each cell with a value between 1 and 81 and then removing the duplicates but i cant seem to get excel to pick 81 unique numbers, instead it will pick no number 1, or two number 70s.
I have managed to get a macro to pick 1 cell at random but cant get it to pick across the whole range of 5000.
I need the selected rows to be displayed on a new sheet. The idea being that I have a quiz with hundreds of questions and I only want a random selection to appear when I execute the macro. I plan on hiding the original questions and only displaying the randomly selected ones.
Here is the original code from the previous post.
I am trying to write a macro to:
1. Randomly selects 50 rows from 834 on "worksheet 1". There are only two cells per row.
2. Then, it clears "worksheet 2" and "worksheet 3".
3. From each selected row in "Worksheet 1", it splits the two cells and copies the results into two different worksheets, one column per sheet.
4. The rows in the two new worksheets should be congruent (i.e. same selected order from worksheet 1). Keeping the order the same is important.
This is what I have so far:
--------------------
Sub Macro1()
Dim rng As Range
Dim iRow As Long
With Rows("1:834")
Do
iRow = Fix(Rnd() * 834 + 1)
If rng Is Nothing Then
Set rng = .Rows(iRow)
Else
Set rng = Union(rng, .Rows(iRow))
End If
Loop Until rng.Areas.Count >= 50
End With
rng.Select
Selection.Copy Sheets("Sheet2").Cells(Rows.Count, 1).End(xlUp).Offset(1, 0)
End Sub

I have two worksheets. ws1 contains a large number of dates on column 3. ws3 contains around 20 dates on column 3.
I want to pick two dates randomly in ws1 that does not already exist in ws3.
Here is my working code, but it is really slow to process. How to optimize this code? Also I would like to add a function where if the macro is not able to find two random dates that aren't already in ws3 then exit loop.
VB:
Set ws1 = thisworkbook.sheets(1)
Set ws3 = thisworkbook.sheets(3)
lr = ws2.Cells.Find(What:="*", After:=[A1], SearchDirection:=xlPrevious).Row
Set rvis = ws2.Range("c2:c" & lr).SpecialCells(xlCellTypeVisible)
mynodate = 0

I would like to select say 2 id from sheet1 and 2 names from sheet 2 randomly and copy to sheet3, to cells a and b,have seen various codes but none seem to fit the bill.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a multiselect listbox with values that gets populated from a sql statement, and I would like to get is the first or second index from the selected item. I know how to get the listindex from a combobox by using:
VB:
cbnumber.List(.ListIndex, 0)
How can I loop through and get the 1st index number for the selected items only from the listbox? I want to pass this index number to another sql statement.
i have entered some values in excel like this
A1 B1
1 a
2 b
3 c
4 d
etc
i will put a command button, like "Randomise"
what i wanted is , if i click that command button, the Value in cell A1 should be remain same. but the values in B1 has to be randomly changed that is, eachtime i click the randomise button the value of b1 must keep changing for every click. someting like this
A1 B1
1 d
2 f
3 h
4 a

I need to create a file with random purchase list that have some restrictions.
I’ve been working on this file for few days, but I couldn’t get desirable results.
Attached a sample file that describes what I did. It build up as the final file (just the final file has many more items).
I’ll try to explain what I need and how it works:
There are 4 categories: Theater, Salon, Kitchen & garden.
I need to create random lists of purchases (each list should be a line at the total sheet)
there is budget limitation of $100000. Each category has minimum items that must be purchase (headlines are in red color, total of 9 items).
The minimum items that can be on one list are 11 (9 red columns & another 2 random columns). Maximum are 15 items (9 + 6). Same item shouldn’t appear twice at the same list.
This file chooses randomly 19 items and check if the list stands up the budget.
There are 3 issues that I couldn’t solve by myself:
1.I should define the file to stay within minimum & maximum items per list (11-15)
2.Make sure it doesn’t go over the budget
3.Stabilize the list the values will not change each time I’m doing changes to file
How do I get a random name from a list that I have created? The random feature only deals with numbers. I want to be able to push F9 or click on something and have a cell randomly pull a name from the list.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis might be a little complex to understand but I am going to try to make it clear as to what I am in need of. Basically I have a larger macro that runs and I need to add a pop up that asks for a percentage to be put into a new sheet. The percent is the percent of random rows on the current sheet to be put into a new sheet. Then it would have to create the new sheet with the random information. This is for a audit and we want to have it done randomly and no duplicates. There are no duplicates in the list at this point. The width if needed is from column A to column E.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHow do I make a row of 5 random numbers in A2:A6 that are not the same as each other. It's basically for a Bingo card. I have a formula that can calculate the random numbers =INT(RAND()*15)+1 under the B's for example, but I can't seem to figure out how to make it so they are not the same.
How can I make sure that I can generate random numbers that don't repeat using the rnd function in VBA.
View 14 Replies View RelatedOn my excel spreadsheet, I have a list of 14 names in column A (row 1-14).
In a separate cell, I'd like for it to pull a random name from that list. How would I go about doing that?
I have build a system that needs a lot of random numbers generated to work.
I have used what I thought would work to generate me these numbers like this example:
VB:
Lastrow = ThisWorkbook.Sheets("RPlay").Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row
RPlayerNum = Int((Lastrow - 2 + 1) * Rnd + 2)
This would generate a random number into RPlayerNum variable, based on the list in sheet RPlay, missing off row 1 as the header.
However we have noticed a massive flaw in this code.... It works as long as the excel file is open, each time run it gives a different random number. However if you close the excel file and open it, then run it, it ALWAYS gives the same number first run, every time.
How to generate random 50 number with 10 group..
