Update External Sheets Without Opening Workbook

May 2, 2009

I have 3 sheets: 1: master entry sheet that fills data in 5 different excel docs. Then there is another doc that aggregates data from the 5 and presents totals on the data. I am trying to get the end result without having to have 7 different excel files open, but when I enter into the master entry sheet, the data doesn't seem to be "pushed" up to the 5 different docs until each one is opened up. Obviously, the master aggregator is not updated since the 5 don't have the new data. When the files are all opened at the same time, the data flows perfectly, I'm just trying to find a way to avoid having to open the 5 docs in the middle of the process.

Update Links Opening Workbook: Turning Off Warnings

Sep 8, 2006

When ever I open a file a message comes up reading "This workbook contains links to other data sources" and then asks me wethere I wasnt to update or not. Well I don't want people to see this when they run a Macro I have created. So what I would like to know is if there is some code that I can add into the macro that will either disable that message or somehow always answer "dont update" everytime that message comes up so that the user wont have to be bothered with it.

Opening External Files With VBA

Oct 31, 2007

On the first worksheet of my workbook I have a list of file names in cells I11:I27. The filenames have been 'compiled' using the concatenate function, so for example, although cell I11 displays:

Richard 2007-09.xls,

the cell contents are really:

=CONCATENATE(G20," ",L9,"-",J9,".xls")

Using VBA, I want to be able to open each respective file in cells I11:I27, copy the contents into this workbook (sheet=raw), and close it. My problem is that I don't know how to tell excel the filename in VBA, because the cells contents are not really the filename - they are a formula.

Opening External Files In Excel?

May 5, 2014

I have a drawing index in excel sheet as shown below "there are thousands rows but here is only an example":

FILEID
TITLE

brd213962-1-1.pdf
SPECIAL PIPE SUPPORT DRAWING

brd213962-2-1.pdf
SPECIAL PIPE SUPPORT DRAWING

brd213962-3-1.pdf
SPECIAL PIPE SUPPORT DRAWING

brd213962-4-1.pdf
SPECIAL PIPE SUPPORT DRAWING

brd213962-5-1.pdf
SPECIAL PIPE SUPPORT DRAWING

And in the same folder I have all the drawings in PDF format and all the drawing are exactly named as listed under FILEID column.

I just want to click the drawing number in the excel sheet and get the drawing opened automatically.

Currently what I am doing is searching the index for a particular drawing and then searching the folder for that drawing to open.

Color Cells With External Links On Update

Feb 27, 2008

I have the following code in Sheet1 for file Book7.xls

Private Sub Worksheet_Calculate()

On Error Resume Next

For Each rcell In Range("A1:D6")
Select Case rcell.Value
Case Is >= 5
rcell.Interior.Color = vbBlue
Case Is < 5
rcell.Interior.Color = vbRed
End Select
Next rcell

End Sub

Range A1:D6 is linked to an external source file which I am changing every now and then.

A1 has the formula:

=[Book8.xls]Sheet1!A1*1

Copied all the way to D6.

[Book8.xls]Sheet1!A1:D6 presently has all values 1 hence the formatting in Book7 is all red.

Now I an changing source file to Book9.xls (thru EDIT menu->LINKS). [Book9.xls]Sheet1!A1:D6 has all values 10. But when I change external source to Book9.xls, the right formatting did not apply. All are still red (instead of blue). I still need to go in one of the cell and press F2 and F9 to trigger calculation.

How do I change the code in order to recognise the calculation in order to trigger the codes in the event?

Automatically Update External Links To Csv File In 2007

Jan 28, 2010

I have an Excel 2003 workbook (named TargetWorkbook.xls) with some links to a CSV file called DataSource.csv. I use Excel 2007 to open the workbook. I checked the "Update links to other documents" option under the "When Calculating this workbook..." section on the Advanced pane of the Excel Options window. I unchecked the "Ask to update automatic links" option under the "General" section on the Advanced pane of the Excel Options window. I selected the "Don't display the alert and update links" option on the Startup Prompt dialog (accessed from the Edit Links dialog) I created a simple Auto_Open macro with the following statements:

Sub Auto_Open()
Workbooks.Open Filename:="C:ProjectsExcelTestDataSource.csv", ReadOnly:=True
Worksheets("DataSource").Activate
Workbooks("TargetWorkbook.xls").Activate
Windows("DataSource.csv").Visible = xlVeryHiidden
End Sub

The DataSource.csv file is updated daily. I want the cells of TargetWorkbook.xls to automatically update from the csv file when I open TargetWorkbooks.xls without displaying a prompt. I plan to deploy this workbook to a server and open it programatically via a Windows Service (I know, I know, Microsoft doesn't encourage this)and can't have it throwing up a user dialog.

Here is the problem: When I open TargetWorkbook.xls manually using Excel 2007, it updates the links but throws up the dialog "This workbook contains one or more links that cannot be updated...". When I click on the "Edit Links..." button, it displays the message "Warning: Open source to update values". When I click the "Check status" button for this link, it says "Source is open". How do I prevent this dialog box from poping up? I've been wrestling with this for a few
days now and can't find a solution.

Import External Data. Update Link For New Database

Dec 12, 2006

In an Excel sheet i have set up a link to an Access database query (select query) using the Import External Data method. The data is store sales by week, arranged in a pivot table layout (stores as rows, weeks as columns). As time goes by, the database will be updated for new weeks sales, and i would like to refresh the data and the new weeks automatically appear in the Excel sheet, in subsequent columns.

At the moment, the only way i can seem to get this to work is to open up the link in MSQuery and manually select the new weeks from the Access query. i have set the parameters to overwrite cells with new data rather than insert new data. i'm sure there is a way to do this, as it feels like it would be a common thing to want, but i can't seem to find an answer anywhere!

Update Cells On Opening

Jan 9, 2007

I have attached a workbook that has 2 documents in it. The first sheet is an inventory list. It is formulated so that when somebody enters amounts in the "Count, Used and Restocked" fields the "Ending Total" shows the final count. I would like this sheet to auto update the "Starting Count" field and erase the "Used" and "Restocked" fields so the next time the document is opened the "Starting Count" would be the same as the "Ending Count" from the last time the document was edited and the "Used" and "Restocked" fields would be blank. I assume this would be done with a Macro but I'm a Noob so I might be wrong.

Opening New Workbook And Pasting Values Into Current Workbook?

May 13, 2014

I am using the below code (i have combined different bits of code which i found on these forums) to open a new workbook, copy all the data in it and paste it into Sheet2 in the active workbook . Also, i want the data to be pasted on the next empty row as there is already data in Sheet2. The data that is being copied and pasted has the same format and it is going to be repeated many times.

The problem i am having is that it is not offsetting the data to the next empty row - i think it is a simple change but i can't seem to get there :s

Also, the code is currently selecting all of the data from the workbook that i open - is there a way i can select all of the data, excluding the first row (the first row contains the headings which i already have in Sheet2 in the active workbook).

Slow Macro - Multiple Vlookups To External Sheets

Feb 29, 2008

I'm working on a macro which compares values in particular cells across different versions of a sheet. Unfortunately there are quite a lot of values, and my code is running very slowly.

I'm trying to get the data in a grid, with the file version across the top, and down the left the project name. For each file version I need to look up a specific value for every project listed.

At the moment, my macro is creating a seperate formula for each cell which does a vlookup on the project name to the specific external file.

The relevant bit of code is below

At the moment its runnig to slow by several orders of magnitude, Working on a 4 by 10 grid it takes about a minute, and I'm going to need it to be able to handle a 50 by 800 grid.

While the code is running, the CPU is not maxed out, so I'm assuming that its the calls to the file system which are taking all the time.

Application.ScreenUpdating = False

Dim ccount As Integer
Dim rcount As Integer
Dim sFilename As String
Dim sPath As String

With ActiveSheet
For ccount = 1 To Range("c1").End(xlToRight).Column - 2

sPath = Left(FileNamesList(ccount), InStr(FileNamesList(ccount), "Pipeline ~") - 1)

sFilename = Right(FileNamesList(ccount), Len(FileNamesList(ccount)) - InStr(FileNamesList(ccount), "Pipeline ~") + 1)

For rcount = 1 To Range("A65536").End(xlUp).Row - 2

by SDB.xls]Pipeline'!$A$1:$AO$300,3,0)

Cells(rcount + 2, ccount + 2) = "=VLOOKUP(""" & Cells(rcount + 2, 1) & """,'" & sPath & "[" & sFilename & "]Pipeline'!$A$1:$AO$300,3,0)"

Next rcount
Next ccount

Save Data From One Workbook To Another Without Opening Workbook

Mar 1, 2013

I have a spreadsheet that data gets exported to from a software program. There is information such as customer name, part number, inquiry number, etc that I'd like to use to develop a log of all my estimates I create for parts. I'd like excel to take the cells I select and insert them into certain cells in the other workbook and automatically save that workbook. This will create a log of all my estimates where I can then link the full estimate to the log. The information will have to go in the next available row. Is there any way I can accomplish this without having to open the other workbook and save the work book each time?
