Find The Lack Of Contrasting Colors In The "theme" Portion Of The Color Palette
Feb 3, 2009
I find the lack of contrasting colors in the "theme" portion of the color palette useless. For instance--- I TYPICALLY do not need 5 shades of similar blue that I cannot visually differentiate within the color pallette of my working area.
I also need colors that more visually contrast one another and pop out (closer to the row of standard colors that is given or those of prior versions of excel).
Is there a way to add a custom row of colors with a custom title in the color pallette like the "theme" colors have or the "Standard" or the "Recent Colors" ?
If that can't be done...is anyone privy to the syntax for changing the Recent Colors area?
I'd like to add for instance the below three colors to the default recent colors of each new workbook...
Selection.Interior.ColorIndex = 4 '(Bright Green)
Selection.Interior.ColorIndex = 7 '(Bright Magenta)
Selection.Interior.ColorIndex = 37 '(Bright Blue)

I have one workbook that I open where the color palette differs from the default. (I did not create the file, I only use it, so I am not sure how this happened).
When I open this file while I have another file opened, it causes the color palette in the file with the default color palette to change. So then when I save the file that was not custom and then re-open it, all of the colors have been changed to match the palette in the custom one.
Clicking Tools>Options>Color then hitting reset does not work to set the palette back to the default colors.
I do not have to change every color back to default by hand.

when I am in some of my spreadsheets, the background colors for the cells have changed. In fact the entire color selections are slightly different from what is normal. Then if I close out all sheets I have opened and reopen them in excel they are back to normal.

I'm trying to change the default colour palette for "fill colour" and "font colour". The way I've been doing it before, is to have a spreadsheet with the colour palette I want in my XLSTART folder, and then when I open a new document, going to tools->options->color->copy colors from, and selecting that spreadsheet.
However, this is a pain, and I was wondering if I can just set the colour palette to have my colour scheme already there, whenever I create a new spreadsheet.

I have a column of data that contain miscellaneous comments in each of the cells in column 'A'. This is a sample of the text in one of those cells:
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
Is there a way to programmaticly search each cell in col 'A' to look for any occurrence of the string 'fox jumps over' and highlite in RED only that string occurrence?
So in the end the above cell would now be:
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

I have a button (shape) whose text value is linked to cell A1. (In other words, if text in cell A1 changes, the text on the button changes). A concatenation formula exists in cell A1 to "join" together a combination of text and cell values. The formula in A1 looks something like this:
="You have "&B10&" records that contain errors."
I'd like to set the font for the "&B10" portion to be a different color than the rest of the text string so that it stands out from the rest of the text. Obviously this can be done when the text is manually entered into a text box, but when using a formula to populate the text in the text box, it's all or nothing. I'm hoping to find a way to embed a separate font color within the formula string in A1 for just the portion I want to change? For example, all text would be regular/black, but the numeric value generated from cell B10 would be yellow.

I have a data base in which I classify cells in three colors (green, yellow, and red) on my own. I would like the first cell in each column to indicate if there is a red or yellow cell in it's column. Because red cells are more important then yellow cells, if there is a yellow and a red cell in the column, I would like the red to over ride the yellow and the first cell would indicate red.
So basically, if there is a red cell in the column, no matter what other colors there are, the first cell should show red. If there is only yellow or yellow and green cells, the first cell should show yellow. If there are only green cells or green cells and clear, the first cell should show clear.

I am trying to organize it in a way that I can have all my purchases added based on my text criteria of certain purchase... Ill try to be as clear as possible. I have already organized it in a way that when I paste new months statement in my Excel file it sorts it by date, newest on the top, and I made Conditional Formatting by color on column D which states the Description of purchase. Starbucks appears in description cell but it is followed by number and location making each Starbucks cell in column D different in name. So its hard to use Exact phrase formula to combine the amount for that purchase.
My question is: Is there a formula that find a PORTION of text in a D column and automatically adds the price to the right of it together in one cell. There is a formula that looks for the whole text in the cell but that doesn't work when my name has always some extra numbers at the end of the word Starbucks

I have a (few) spreadsheets that I am using to gather data. One spreadsheet has over 9000 entries with 20 items for each entry (9000 rows, 20 columns). I use this as my source. In another spreadsheet I have the same column headers but, except for the one column that I enter manually, the rest of the columns are loaded from the source spreadsheet via a VLOOKUP function. As you can see there is a lot of data and a lot of action going on. Needless to say I have run into a conflect with the amount of resources I have available. I keep getting the message "Excel cannot complete this task with available resources. Choose less data or close other applications."
Since I have no other applications open, and I can't use less data, how can I increase my resources. I have been told that Excel allocates resources to a set limit regardless of the amount of ram or other memory you have. Is there any way to increase this?

My pallet lost color-coding - if I hover over each little scare it displays the names for the colors and if I click on them they color the cells with the right colors, but the palette itself lost the visual display of colors except for 8 colors: black, blue, red, magenta, yellow, cyan, and white.
I use color-coding of cells a lot and I find it difficult to work without visual clues. At least the hover-support allows me to get the work done, but with difficulty.

I'm trying to find some vba code that will find dups on my worksheet and highlight them in a special way: first dup = bright yellow, second dup = bright green, third dup = bright red, and if there is a forth, fifth or sixth dup, then just increment color number to next one, than next, etc...
I would like for the code to run as soon as there is a change on the worksheet (when I finish entering data in a row). I think I already have the right code to do that:
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
If Not Intersect(Target, Range("E9:E10000")) Is Nothing Then
Call dupSearch
End If
End Sub
I tested it out, seems to work as it should.
My major problem is that I need the code to check column F9:F10000 and compare the cells all along that column. That column concatenates 3 other cells in that same row (lastname&firstname&employee#), so if I run my dupSearch on that column only, I should find only real dups, and not just 2 people with the same name.
I also need to make sure it doesn't find empty cells, thinking they are dups. I would like to highlight column A to E of the row that contains the dup, and not just the cell in column F.
I have tried many other codes that I have found on the forum, but none of them work right with what I'm trying to do, and I just don't know enough VBA to make the changes I need.

I have a worksheet with 20+ columns. For this macro, I only need to focus on 4 of them. However, none of these columns are ever in a fixed position so the macro would need to find them by name and NOT by column position. Here they are...
1. Vacation Type (will only have a text value of either "Cold" or "Warm")
2. Vacation Started (will always have a date *x/xx/xxxx)
3. Vacation Ended (sometimes it will have a date '*x/xx/xxxx' and sometimes it will NOT have a date and will be truly blank)
4. Number of Days (currently has ALL truly blank cells)
THIS WHOLE MACRO SHOULD NOT BE CASE SENSITIVE ANYWHERE
Here's what I would like the macro to do...
Scenario 1 - for "Cold" values
Find "Cold" text values in the "Vacation Type" column
"Cold" values WITH a date in the "Vacation Ended" columnIF there IS a date in the "Vacation Ended" column in the same row, put the number of days difference between the "Vacation Started" column and "Vacation Ended" column in the "Number of Days" column.
The amount of days in the "Number of Days" column will determine whether these cells should be highlighted GREY or RED.
A) IF the number of days difference is 7 days or less, highlight the cells in the "Vacation Ended" column and "Number of Days" column RED.
OR..............................

I just converted from Excel 2003 to 2007 and print previewed a worksheet and find a tiny image with a small portion of the print area. When I look at the sheet in page break preview mode, I see the 8.5 x 11 sheet broken up into approx 77 smaller sheets. When I try to move the page breaks to include the whole sheet it states the change cannot be made as it will result in an image less than 10%. I have attached two images - the first shows the print preview I get, and the second show the multiple pages when I view in page break.

Is it possible to change the borders/pattern of a single cell so that it looks like the image in the attached document? This may seem a strange thing to want to do, but there is a good reason! Merged cells will not suit my purpose. The pattern palette allows a cell to be filled with horizontal lines, but I need there to be just two lines (i.e. dividing a single cell into three boxes).

The company I work for has its own set of standard colours to be used in all documents. I've set the colours up in the colour palette using the below sub (x's are actually numbers):
Sub SetCompanyColours()
ActiveWorkbook.Colors(9) = RGB(x, x, x)
ActiveWorkbook.Colors(46) = RGB(x, x, x)
ActiveWorkbook.Colors(12) = RGB(x, x, x)
ActiveWorkbook.Colors(10) = RGB(x, x, x)
ActiveWorkbook.Colors(14) = RGB(x, x, x)
ActiveWorkbook.Colors(5) = RGB(x, x, x)
ActiveWorkbook.Colors(47) = RGB(x, x, x)
ActiveWorkbook.Colors(16) = RGB(x, x, x)
End Sub
I want to distribute this round to my workmates. Problem is that, if they set the colours in the workbook using the above sub, the workbook colours will be all wrong when clients open them on their computer. How do I get around this. I have thought about programmatically copying the sub into the open event of the activeworkbook. I've looked through this website, http://www.cpearson.com/excel/vbe.htm, but it doesn't explain how to copy code to the workbook events part of a vba project, only to a new module

Is it possible to import the palette whenever a new book is opened by clicking the "New" command on the toolbar? I'm aware of Workbook_Open Event, however this only works on a saved workbook. And I suppose I could use a template and open that every time I need a new book, though I was hoping to avoid this solution.
The best solution for me, that I can think of, would be to replace the "New" command with code that will 1)open a new book and 2)import the colour palette from an external workbook at a specified path. Some of you may have done something similar in the past in a more logical manner, if so I’m open to alternative ideas. My main priority is the result, not necessarily how it is reached.

I'd like a macro to do this
Put the word "Yes" in the "Red" column if any cell in that row is cell (except the header row).
This was not done via conditional formatting. These red cells are the result of many different subs, so modifying these existing subs would not work as I wouldn't know where to begin modifying each one........

I'm trying to search a column for the first occurence of a given text string, get the cell's row (that's the hardest part for me), and color that row.
I've tried using the macro builder, but I can seem to get the referencing right and get different error (91, 424, 1004), depending on how I've managed to mangle my code at the time.
Here's the current version of a bit of my
Set rFoundCell = Worksheets("WBS").Range("B1")
Worksheets("WBS").Columns("B:B").Select
Set rFoundCell = Selection.Find(What:="Insert all new lines above this line by insert button" _
, After:=ActiveCell, LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt:=xlPart, SearchOrder:= _
xlByColumns, SearchDirection:=xlNext, MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:= _
False).Activate
' how do I get the found row? or do I need it ??
With rFoundCell
rFoundCell.EntireRow.Font.ColorIndex = 35

Is there a way to find specific values and change their colors all at once in xls?
For example, if it looked like:
1 4 5 3 7
4 2 6 3 1
5 9 2 6 4
And if I tell it to change every 4 to red, it'd be like:
1 4 5 3 7
4 2 6 3 1
5 9 2 6 4
Or changing the cells' color would be ok, too.

I have columns of black data that I manually go through and find regions that have cells with values that are 0.06 or more different.
I then turn these regions into blue colored regions.
Is there any way you can design a macro that goes through the spreadsheet and FILL COLOR YELLOWs a cell who is 0.06 or more less then the next cell down?
This would be so much easier on my eyes, since I usually have 80 columns and 1500 rows of data.
The blue coloring I still have to do manually because my human instinct is sometimes important there.
I would be using the FILL COLOR YELLOW cells as quick markers for my regions of interest.
