When using the formula '=COLUMN()' in cell A1, it returns the number of the column - in this case, '1' (for column A). Is it possible to affect this formula so that it returns the column letter (in this case, 'A')?
I am a teacher and I want a column to turn a particular colour if a pupil has met their target grade and another if they have not. Our grades work as letters A* being the best then descending as follows A, B, C, D, E, F, G, U.
I have a column with the pupil's target grade (one of the above letters) and another column with their current grade. How do I get excel to understand the ranking of the letters and format the current grade column according to whether they have met their target or not?

So "C" would return 01, "E" would return 02 and "O" would return 03.
For the below formula is it possible to replace the B's (column location) with a cell Say Z146 which contains the letter B (or a number if thats easier and someone can tell me the numbers for each column).
When the formula is dragged into the next cell (down) it takes its column reference from Z147 and then my life becomes so much easier.

What I would like to do is output the first 4 characters of a cell into another cell. eg Cell A1 has "1234 Sydney". If I just use the manual formula "=left(A1,4)" it would give me the correct output "1234" in say cell B2, but as a formula. As I need to automate this in a macro, how could you code this in VBA to output the String "1234" into cell B2(ie the actual output rather than a formula)?

Say my data in A1 reads 81234568, and I would like it to display in cell A2 as h123456.
I have letter and number combination code in two collumns and they differ for 10.000 numbers:
BAM98314
BAM88314
BAM90000
BAM80000
As you can see the left code is for 10000 numbers higher. the letters are allways the same. In the event that this isn't so, if difference between codes in same row is more or less than 10000 numbers. I was thinking on making conditional formating so the cells with wrong difference would be marked red, but I do not know how to make formula for this difference.
How to translate a specific number into a specific letter related to the number itself.
I have lots of different numbers for example all going down a specific cell (These numbers I want to separate into 3 different catagories. The positive numbers I want to be calculated as the same Letter that is next to that row directly over to the left of that cell.
So if the letter
B / cell / cell / +9 / Then I want if its a positive number like +9 to answer in the formula with the same letter (B) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course
B / cell / cell / -6 / Then I want if its any negative number like -6 to answer in the formula as the opposite Letter of (P) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course
P / cell / cell / +17 / Then I want if its a positive number like +17 to answer in the formula as the same letter (P) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course
P / cell / cell / -3 / Then I want if its a negative number like -3 to answer in the formula as the opposite Letter of (B) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course
and thirdly if its a (0) zero and only (zero's) Then I want the answer to stay (0) zero.
The number can be any numbers it doesn't matter. Only distinction is that positive number of +1 and up repeat and stay the same letter that the cell on the far left is already stated.

and of course (0) zero would be listed as a positive number and only return a (0) zero as the result of the formula.
Can a Function give two or more output variables. e.g.

this will give back Y as a result. But if I want to get 2 or more output variables (let's say I need to get also B into sub) from one function, how should I do that?
I need this because function works with large matrix and I want to extract some values appeared in between.
I have a table with 5 columns and approx. 85-90 rows.
Column A has the Branch name in it e.g. Beavers or Bedfont (11 Branches in total)
Column B has User Type - Adult, Child, Guest (Adult), Guest (Child), Catalogue
Column C has Session Type - Booking, Drop-In
Column D has Total Session Time (mins) - which gives a number in minutes of the total session time used
Column E is not needed
I currently get a calculator and add up e.g all of the adult Bookings for Beavers and enter them onto a Report Sheet, then all of the Adult Drop-Ins for Beavers etc. I want an Excel Spreadsheet that will give me a total number for each so I can do away with the calculator.
I am thinking of creating a new sheet with a number of cells that have a formula similar to this
=IF(AND(A2="Beavers",B2="Adult",C2="Booking"),E2,0)
But I want it to see Adult, Guest (Adult) and Catalogue as the same thing / and I want it to pick up Child and Guest (Child) as the same thing.
I am trying to do something for a baseball game I am creating. What I am looking for is a formula for one cell that will basically give me a whole number when a certain criteria is met. I am also looking for this cell's formula to get part of it's formula from another cell in the document. So let's use cell A1 has 1.50 in it.
I want this other cells formula to be able to give me a 9 if A1 is 0.00-1.50, a 8 if A1 is 1.51-2.79, 7 if A1 is 2.80-4.30, a 6 if A1 is 4.31-5.49 and 5 if A1 is 5.50-500.00.
I'm working with a spreadsheet that works out how many hours someone has worked on a given shift.
In cell C4 I have the formula =E4-D4+IF(D4>E4,1)
In cells D4 & D5 I have an entered number in time format (custom hh:mm)
The problem with this is that when a time is entered in either D4 or E4 it automatically gives me a number of hours worked (upto midnight) without any input in the other.
Aim: Not to show the number of hours worked in cell C4 until hours in both cells D4 & E4 have been entered. NB. Sometimes the start times are 20:00 until 08:00 (night shift) hence answer 10:00.
I have a Col where the cells have been formatted to enter "PR" before the numbers input into any cell in that Col. I did this by using the custom selection in the format cell. However some times i need to input the number with the letter "A" at the end. For instance PR123456A.
Now in some cells it lets me do this but in others it does not. It would end up with 123456A, loosing the PR at the front. I have checked that all is well within the custom window. Can any body offer an explanation as to why it could be doing this.
In sheet1 I have a simple database consisting of 5 columns of data
Column A : Name ie James Jones
Column B : payroll number ie 123456
Column C : shift times ie 1245-2124
Column D : job title ie floor
Column E : comments ie A/L or 0600-1500
what I would like is some code that will go down Column E and if a 'time string' ie 1300-2130 is found then copy this string and paste into corresponding value in column C. If a text string is found ie A/L or Sick or anything like this then ignore and move onto next cell, loop this until all cells in column E have been checked.
I need a formula to give me a MIN or MAX value only if there is a number greater than 0 in the cell AND not alphabetical letters (as some cells do contain). I need it to return the value for that cell across about ten sheets--I have that part figured out (I think). But I keep getting a #Ref error.

I have everything working except either picking up a number I have pre-loaded into a column or auto generating a number onto the inputting userform. I need a number in the userform to be either generated in the next empty row in column I or taken from the numbers in the next empty row I have loaded into column I. Password is snatch.

I'm trying to find the largest number in a row and then have the column heading (text) as the result. I can find the largest number by using =max(numb1, numb2 ....) but then how do I get the heading of the column as the result. An example of what I want to happen is below

Blue
Orange
Yellow

I anticipate an issue where 2 columns have the same largest number and not sure how to over come this either with multiple answers
