How To Fix Column Width And Save It Before Closing File

May 30, 2002

I am trying to fix the width of a column everytime I open it but I can't. After I have fixed the column width and saved it before I close the file, when i reopen it, the column width will expand. The data source of that column is a real time query. I tried to lock the cell but when i locked it, I can't refresh the data from the query as it is locked. So, is there any way for me to achieve that?

What code could I assign to a CommandButton that only allows a "Save As" function?

Save Pop-up Not Appearing When Closing

Something seems to have happened to my Excel. When I make changes and close the workbook or application, the pop-up box asking "Do you want to save the changes you made to [Book1]?" no longer shows up.

So far I've tried running a macro with Application.DisplayAlerts = True, but that only seems to work while the macro is running.

Save Backup Copy Before Closing

Aug 18, 2007

I was able to find the coding that I needed for being able to have a backup of my file. So when I save a workbook and close I also get a backup copy in another folder that is dated. But I am having problems getting the code to work. Probably because I do not understand it correctly. Here it is.

Option Explicit

Private Sub Workbook_BeforeClose(Cancel As Boolean)
ThisWorkbook.SaveCopyAs "C:Documents and SettingsTeacherDesktopTEST" & _
Format( Date, "yyyy-mm-dd") & " - " & ThisWorkbook. Name
End Sub

Where it has, ThisWorkbook.Name, do I put the name of the workbook? Not sure.

Automatically Save Sheet To New Workbook When Closing

Jun 30, 2008

I am in the process of setting up an Excel invoice. So far I have managed to implement the following:

On open: Incrementing invoice number
Cells cleared ready for next use

Private Sub Workbook_Open()
Sheets("Sales Invoice").Range("H2").Value = Sheets("Sales Invoice").Range("H2").Value + 1 .....................

There is only one task left I need to automate. On closing the document I would like a copy to be saved in a specific folder and be given the file name of a cell (B9). Obviously I would not want the 'saved copy' to retain the Incrementing invoice number or the clear cells function. Even if the invoice copy was exported as a flat jpeg that would be fine. I am using Office Exce 2003 (Sp2) - I have attached my invoice should anyone be kind enough to take a look.

Print To Fixed Width File

Apr 4, 2012

I have this data below in an excel worksheet. I'm using the ws.Cells(x,x).Value command to read values from the cells an print them out to a .prn fixed width file. However when it writes it to the .prn file my numeric fields don't have are not 0.00 but 0. And also the numeric fields are left justified I would like them right justified in the .prn file.

Excel Spreadsheet values

1.135.102/29/120.000.001.135.202/29/120.000.00

My output to .prn file looks like below:

1.135.1 02/29/12 0 0
1.135.1 02/29/12 0 0

I would like my output to .prn file to look like the following:

1.135.1 02/29/12 0.00 0.00
1.135.1 02/29/12 0.00 0.00

Import Fixed Width Text File

Apr 28, 2008

I am having a problem importing fixed width text files with VBA. I created a user form for a dept to import a number of reports we get as text files into Excel. I imported each line into 1 cell (Column A) in Excel and then used mid functions to split out the columns. Everything works fine on my PC. However, when I use other PCs to import the same files (either off the same shared drive or the PC hard drive) the columns are not splitting in the correct places. Does anybody know what could cause this. Since the columns are splitting based off a fixed number of characters, I'm assuming Excel is somehow distorting a character count while opening the text file. I did notice that if I try to import text files saved on one of our shared drives, they do not import correctly on my PC either. However, if I copy and save the same text file to any of the other shared drives or my PC, it imports with no problems.

Closing Excel File Using VB

How do I close this Excel file (no changes to be made since I only read from the file) and quit Excel from running ?

Here is what I have at the moment :

Dim FirstName, Surname As String
'file path and name for the Excel file
Dim FileNamePath As String = "C:UsersMRCDesktopMRC FilesVisual Basic FilesSwimManager 2014CurrentSeasonDATASquadData.xls"

Adding Column Widths Of Merged Area To Match Single Column Width

Sep 19, 2012

I needed to match the width a merged area of seven columns to a single column width (for row autofitting). Adding the column unit values and setting the single column to that value produced a significantly narrower width.

The documentation mentions that the column width unit is scaled to the font type and size and the absolute width is given in points.

This is set by the normal style setting in Excel Options or by VBA application.standardfontsize = 8 (in this case).

For instance, ten columns of Arial font 8 at 8.5 units you would think to be equivalent to a single column of 85 units.
In points, the difference is 420 vs. 386.25, or 33.75 points.

Well, the standard character zero has a width at this setting of 4.5 points and 1 unit is 8.25 points, leaving 3.75 points for margins.

Then (10-1) margins allowances time 3.75 points resolves the difference.

Determining the margin allowances is straightforward, and reveals that the gradation with size is stepped by MS design.
For instance, sizes up to 11 use 3.75 points for margins and increasing points for characters (except between 9 & 10).
Sizes 12 through 18 use 5.25 points, 20 & 22 use 6.75, 24 & 26 use 8.25, etc.

I have created a table for this purpose, however I rarely use a "normal" other than 8, so I can probably use that set in programming.

Prevented From Writing To The .xlb File On Closing

Sep 15, 2009

I'm making a workbook which I want to distribute widely. It will have a lot of changes to the menus which happen 'onOpen'.

I am keen to not spoil peoples special menu setups on closing the workbook.

If I understand correctly, on closing, Excel writes the current menu settings to the .xlb file. Does anyone know of a way to prevent it doing this so that peoples setups are left unchanged?

Presumably there is code that will do it but I've searched a long time and found nothing.

VBA - Syntax Delete Data From Clipboard Before Closing A File

Feb 22, 2008

I recorded a Macro to open a workbook, copy and paste data from one excel workbook to another, and close the workbook which was opened. Everything works fine except:

because of the amount of data that I am copying, I get a message box saying "There is a large amount of information on the Clipboard. Do you want to be able to paste this information into another prgoram later?" with a Yes/No button.

So now I have to click the "No" button before my macro closes the excel file. Is there a simple line of code that will by-pass this?

I am assuming it has to do with the following:

Windows("Book1.xls").Activate
ActiveWindow.Close , savechanges:=False

mystring = len(activrcell.value) or refer to the excel column width

listbox1.columnwidth(mystring;mystring2)

but I get an error message.

Or max of list len or something. The default width is to big and specifying the length could make it to small.

Reduce Number Of Times Opening And Closing Blank Source File

Jul 9, 2012

I have code in VBA that takes a source Excel file and parses it to multiple re-formatted worksheets. Each formatted worksheet is different depending on a variable in the source. There are n of each type of data (1:n Water Sources, 1:n Water Treatment, 1:n Water Storage). Each item needs a copy of a blank re-formatted worksheet appended to the end of the existing data-type worksheet. For example: Water Source #2 is appended to the bottom of Water Source #1 on the same worksheet.

Currently, I am opening the blank re-formatted workbook each time an additional variable of same type is found in the source file. Meaning, if there are 8 Water Sources, I am opening and closing the blank re-formatted workbook 7 times to copy a blank Water Source to the bottom of the Water Source worksheet and then populate the data. AND if there are 3 Water Treatment, I would open and close the blank formatted workbook 2 more times to copy a blank Water Treatment to the bottom of the Water Treatment worksheet. The same goes for Water Treatment.

Obviously, a huge waste of resources and performance. I would rather open the blank re-formatted workbook once (first time an additional worksheet is needed), use the worksheets as needed, and close it at the end.

Attached is my current, working code of the above.

How should I re-write it to check if the blank workbook is already open use it, if not open it?

Code:
Sub Add_Facility(ByVal Worksheet_Name, Copy_Range, Max_Limit)
Dim Last_Row As Integer
Dim Source_Range As Range
Dim Dest_Range As Range
Dim wkb As Workbook

Set wkb = ActiveWorkbook

Locking Column Width And Row Height?

Now I'm entering in some text into them, and I noticed that when I added in 2 digit numbers, the column width expanded a little bit. I want to prevent this from happening, and still be able to enter in the 2 digit text (since it WILL fit, and it's expanding to keep that extra bit of space).

Is there any way to lock the dimensions?
