Menu / Links And Worksheets
Apr 19, 2009
I need to create a fairly complicated spreadsheet (well its complicated for an excel noob like me!)
Im after creating a spreadsheet with approx 100 different worksheets.
On sheet 1, I am aiming to create a drop down menu (or list) with links to the other worksheets. However, when i select an item from this list or menu, i would like the relevent worksheet data to be displayed in the bottom half of Sheet 1. If that makes sense to you! (basically to save me scrolling through all the sheets to find the info I need)
I would also like to have sheet 2 excluded from this list, and on sheet two I would like a list of all my other sheets.
If i can explain it a bit better for you, i am trying to list assest at aprox 100 different locations. So if i had assests in Aberdeen, Altrincham, Anniesland, etc I would have the assets for each location on an individual worksheet with that location name. So all my sheets would be named after the location (ie sheet 3 renamed as Aberdeen, sheet 4 Altrincham, sheet 5 would be Anniesland etc)
On worksheet 2 i would like a list of all locations. (And this next part is what I anticpate as being the tricky bit). My list of locations is ever expanding, and it would be great to just add a new location to the bottom of the list on Sheet 2, and have excel create a new worksheet with that name, and also for that location to appear in my list on sheet 1!
Now, I have no idea how hard this is to do. Ive tried severl template site, the MS help doesnt really help me, and I'm at a bit of a dead end.

I have a file that's supposedly taking some of its values from another file. I say supposedly because when I follow the directory path, its not in there. I think I did find the file its referencing (same name, now in a subdirectory of the original reference). But I changed a value in the file being referenced and it didnt change anything in the active sheet.
I imagine the previous paragraph is a bit confusing so let me say it in another way.
I'm working on a file named A. In that it refers to a file named B, in my DocumentsFinancial directory.
In the DocumentsFinancial directory there is no file named B. However I did find a file named B in DocumentsFinancialWork.
I assume this is what A is referring to. But when I changed the relevant value in B (which does equal the value in A), the value in A didnt change.
I do remember in certain exceptions, Excel files have to be refreshed, I think when manual calculations are on. I'm not sure how to check for that, but I did go to the Data Tab and hit Refresh All.

My links are not automatically updating on my worksheets. I was recently working on a sheet that linked to a different sheet in the same workbook. I deleted some cells by dragging other cells onto them, but when I went to the sheet that was linked to this sheet, the old information remained. When I clicked the cells that should have said "#Ref", they said =Sheet1!#REf but still had the old information showing until after I hit F9.

I am interested in finding out how to link worksheets. For example: the bottom tabs for worksheet1 says contacts. tab for worksheet2 says projects. I want to link from worksheet1 to worksheet2 by clicking on a link that will take the person to the project. On worksheet 2 I have more than one project. THerefore, on worksheet1 after all the content I'd like to have a link that says Project 1 with a link that sends the person to the next worksheet. Same with Project 2. I know this is possible. I have already added the formula. Now I need information on how to insert a link that can be clicked on that will go to the next page.

I came across the following macro that generates a list of worksheets with check boxes to select the ones I want to print. I attached the macro to a button on my "Totals" worksheet. When I run the macro, it lets me pick the worksheets, but doesn't print anything unless "Totals" is one of the worksheets I selected in the dialog box. What is missing?
I also want to stop the screen flickering and have it go back to the "Totals" page when it's done since that's where the button is.

I'm trying to perform a copy & paste operation by hand which to me should be easy in theory. I have a worksheet whose formulas have been corrupted. I have a backup of this sheet- I'd like to copy the backup sheet into the workbook. The problem is that the formulas, which reference other worksheets within the workbook, are copied over as links to the backup workbook instead of the new workbook they are being copied too. This seems simple, but how do I copy the worksheet and the references without having to go through all of the references by hand to only apply to the local book.

I have a workbook with multiple sheets. Is there a tool that creates a menu bar or code that I can add that would support navigation?
My goal is to have something with approximately 4 options (buttons?). They would link to 4 different sheets that serve as indexes within the workbook.
I know I can add a control like a button to a given sheet that would take the user to given sheet when clicked, but can I make the button 'float' above all the sheets, or add to a menu bar, or something? I just don't want to have to add the button to every sheet in the workbook.
I am looking for something simple/easy, and am not looking for anybody to do the work. I just have no idea on how to approach the problem.

When clicking on a button, like a normal button from the control toolbox, is it possible to open a menu from this? So I click on the button i made called "accounts" and this opens a menu next to it with different options.

my worksheet menu bar is displaying the ' Chart' menu no matter what I do. Not only do I have no charts in the workbook, (verified this by: )
For Each ws In Worksheets
ws.Select
MsgBox ActiveSheet.ChartObjects.Count
Next ws
but adding worksheets, selecting various parts of a worksheet, creating a chart and deleting it, and everything else I've tried has no effect.
One interesting thing - the first chart I added (to test if it would 'unstick' itself upon deletion of the new chart) was named 'Chart 2', implying there was a chart1 that existed previously.... although I am fairly certain I never added a chart to this workbook at any point.
Also, the menu bar is working fine in other workbooks, and changes to chart and back to data like normal.

Suppose I delete a (unknown) number of items from the Worksheet Menu Bar. This can vary because of the fact that my excel sheet is being used by a different number of people, all with a different Worksheet Menu Bar configuration. Is there a way of counting how many Menu items are still left in the Worksheet Menu Bar?
So, suppose all that is left (after using the program) in the Worksheet Menu Bar are Excel, File, Tools, Help. How can the porgram find out that there are only 4 items in the menu?

I've been having a small problem with my UDFs. I'm sorry if it's already been asked but english isn't my first language and I don't know the proper search key works to find my problem.
Basically, I've been programming functions destined for a single workbook so I don't use addins. If I write a function called J13F and I try to write that in one of my excel sheets, it generally doesn't work. Excel makes me write it like this:
='myfilename.xls!'J13F.J13F(Sheet!F21)
However, sometimes when I close then open my file, this won't work and excel will make me use my function normally: J13F(Sheet!F21)
I'd like to be able to use the function normally in every sheet in my workbook, how can I do that?

I am using several spreadsheets which are currently linked to specific cells in other workbooks. These are updated through dating the links whenever needed. However I would rather not use formulas in the cells at all and only have value updated by using the link function within VBA. I cannot find how to do this though.
Just to reiterate. I currently have cells that have"='\server01main_foldersubfolderDocument.xls" for example. The formula syntax is not exactly right but in the spreadsheets it is so you get the idea. These links are updated (when the workbooks are not open) when the links are update via the edit menu or a macro which does the same thing.
What I want to do is have no formula in the cells (only values) and use the feature that takes the value from the other workbooks but in VBA exclusively. This is what I have not been able to find out how to do.

I've created a spreadsheet which pulls data from about 5 other spreadsheets via links in the formula.
Unfortunately I am having trouble with these updating. I have to open the 5 individual spreadsheets in order for the data to pull across otherwise I get VALUE in every cell in the amalgamated spreadsheet.
Any thoughts why this should be the case? I've tried it in the past and it's always worked fine.

if it would be possible to update all the links in a workbook at once. For example, say I have a worksheet which is linking to a file named something like 4-6-08 (1) and 4-6-08 (2) and so on with the number in brackets being from 1-21. Now say I have the same thing for 4-7 and 4-8 and 4-9. Now I want to change the links to point to 4-10,11,12,13 instead of 6,7,8, and 9. But still there are 21 copies of each sheet. Is there any way to change all the sources at once so all the 4-6's could become 4-10's and 4-7's to 4-11's?

i have a complex workbook. Recently, when I open it, it asks me if I want to update links. I never (that I know of) established any links to other workbooks. I see that a workbook is referenced in the "edit/links" menu, but I can find no way determine which cells, graphs, etc, in my workbook are subject to this link. I would like to get rid of this useless and bothersome issue.

I've got an excel file with LOTS of links... it's a sort of 'dashboard' that draws in data from all the individual data files in the company.
Recently, when I open the file it's telling me "this file contains one or more links that cannot be updates".
So... as I usually would, I use my 'find links' add in to find anything with a #REF in it... nothing.
Go into edit links and manually update each link... and they all update with no issue.
I just cannot find anything that's broken!

I have several Excel files saved on a network drive at work. We run cost studies and have numerous links mixed in with these files. My question is, when we change data in one sheet, it doesn't update the other sheet where we have it linked. When you click on the address for the link you get, (\fileshareN:Raetc...) If I remove the \fileshare and leave it as N: the links update. What am I doing wrong here? It automatically adds this \fileshare piece when I add the link. When I have removed it and close it, the extra information is added and I am back at square one.
