I have a data validation list in col A.
I don't want ppl to be able to paste values in cell - them must either type the data or select from list.
Also - the sheet is protected but col a is open

I've got a table that has to be manipulated by multiple users. Within the table I have several column ranges with validation lists (in drop down boxes) in order to limit responses. However, I'm finding that most of the users are pasting data in from other sources that may not have been in the validation list, or may be in a different format, etc., and it essentially undermines the reason for using the validation.
I've tried protecting the sheets using various options and tried looking around online for a solution, but I'm not finding how to get around this.
For simplicity sake if I wanted to paste the letter A in to a cell that already had the letter B in it to make the cell read AB how could I achieve this?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am trying to secure a worksheet using data validation. I want to prevent users pasting over data validation fields, however I want to allow users to be able to still use the copy/paste feature as long as the data is valid.
Attached is a sample that I found on the forums. The current code does not allow any paste functionality.

I have attached a sheet that I'm having an issue with. Columns D and E on the Dim Calculator sheet have a data validation formula in the cell. It works in the sense that it pops up if they are outside the parameters that I want them to hit. However, if the user clicks the Cancel button they can just keep going on even though the entry in the cell is aganist the validation.
Example: Columns D and E cannot be larger than Column C. Currently now if Columns D or E are larger than Column C the validation error pops up. But I can just click on cancel and keep going. That is what I want to prevent.
Is there a way to grey out the cancel button?
Should I do something else within the validation itself?
I have a spreadsheet that I'm using for a college football pool. We have almost 100 players, and have it set up for each player to pick up to 20 games each week. There is a sheet for each week of the season. Now, I copy each players picks from a message board and paste them under that players name. My problem is, that some people don't spell the teams correctly or abbreviate when they were told not too. This leads to them missing the points because excel sees it as a wrong entry. What I wantto accomplish is setting up some way to have excel verify the spelling is correct when the players entries are pasted in the sheet. I would also like it to auto-correct errors it finds...say a player types in Ohio St. but the winner is entered as Ohio State...This would be seen as a wrong entry for Ohio St. so I want excel to recognize it and correct it. Also simple spelling errors as well...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a section of my program that asks for board scores (point value is 6-10 in increments of .5) I have set up a data validation so that users can only enter those specific values. Problem is, none of the values can be more than 1 point from each other. (the part I have yet to figure out)
Example, if the first value is a 6.5 the second is 7.0 and the third is a 9.0, I need the data validation to display an error because the 9.0 is beyond the one point spread.
Summary: Display an error message if any of the points are more than 1.0 point from another.
In cell H5 there is list of dates and in H7 there is codex, based on these two conditions in H11 a data validation list should be populated from the code_sheet using column B. The populated list should be unique entries, as the column B in code_sheet has duplicates.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI did the following, and get an error message, that itself seems erroneous.
Steps:
In the source sheet, i selected A9:G9, copied.
In the destination sheet, I selected A9:G9, and then "paste formatting"
In the source range, I selected the same cells, A9:G9, and copy
In the destination sheet, I selected A9:G9, and "paste values"
But, at "paste values" two error alerts come up (and the operation fails):
"The operation requires the merged cells to be the identical size"
"The information cannot be pasted because the copy area and the paste area are not the same size and shape"
Within the range, cells C9:D9 are merged. On the destination sheet, before i try to paste values, the cells that I am pasting into appear to be identically merged, if you just arrow by them, the cell highlighted is merged, and "Merge and Center" is highlighted in the ribbon.
So, I do not understand why i cannot paste in this case, since it would all appear to match up properly.
Upon further investigation, it appears that i cannot "paste values" with any cells along with the merged cell, in the same operation. If I only paste the merged cell alone, with "paste values" it works. But, if i add even one cell on either side, it fails in the same way, even though the selected paste region exactly matches the selected source region, in terms of what cell is merged.
I think this may have come up previously, but..
I want to either retain validation in a cell when I paste data into it - or
I want to apply a validation to a cell which already has data in it.
The validation only seems to work when you apply the rule to an empty cell then manually enter data into it. I ideally want to be able to paste multiple columns into validated columns to check for format compliance.

I have created a daily operating room schedule in which each time slot has a drop down box for the Doctor doing the procedure and the Group of doctors from which he/she came.
It is a yearly schedule with each day of each month duplicated on a tab for that month - the same daily schedule for each.
I have been able to duplicate each day right up until the 25th of the month in which I attempt to save the spreadsheet and am given an error stating it can not save some of the data, though the data appears to be intact (the validation drop down lists)
Upon closing and reopening the spreadsheet, all of the cells that contain validation including and after the 25th of the month are simply gone.
I have attempted to attach a copy of the file but I keep encountering an error with the database.

I have put validation in cell 'B1' to have any value between 0 and 'A1'. A1 have 1.00
Now while putting 0.20 in 'B1', it gives alert that value is greater than A1 and because of Stop Validation, I can not enter data. I wonder how 0.20 can be greater than 1.00.

Basically, any time a new employee name is selected, I want default review begin and end dates populated to the data validation cells so that the dates don't have to be manually selected every time a new employee is reviewed.
- I type a number in a cell
- If the number is not a multiple of an adjacent cell, it will automatically do a ceiling to that number
- If it is a multiple it is ok.

in data validation i have taken a list & assigned it to defined named range say industry ( 50 - 100 industries which are repetitive in nature)
now the problem is the data is neither sorted nor unique
but i want unique sorted data (i can not make changes in original data because of its other various linkages nested formulas)

I need someone to go through them assigning a building number, level and location to each of them. I am using drop down menus, the first choice is building and has the following options:

Depending on the option selected there maybe different locations, i.e. B1 has the following available locations:

Whereas B7 only has: ALL. The third column, level, operates in a similar way.

I have several data validation lists that are driven by named ranges. These ranges include blank cells in order to allow for expansion of the list easily - without updating the named range itself.
Seems like because of these blanks rows...excel is accepting any value. The list is visible and can be used, but the user can also enter in a value not on the list. (when I remove the blank rows from the range, the validation works properly)
data validation to display a list of values. The problem am facing is .. this list has a lot of names & it becomes difficult to scroll through when i need to search for a particular name.. Is it possible that when I press a key on my keyboard, the name starting with that letter is highlighted in the drop down list.. This is not happening automatically using data validation... Is it possible to have a dependent validation drop box that under certain conditions automatically produces an actual value in the cell instead of a drop-down list to choose from? For example, if I choose “Holy Avenger” in the first drop box, and the value for that choice in the second drop box is always a “2”, can you get it to auto-populate in the cell occupied by that 2nd drop box (cell B5 in the attachment)? Or, are you restricted to using Lists only, meaning that you could create a List that only has the value “2” in it, and the user would be required to choose the “2” in the drop box?

Now in cell A2 I want to be able to choose from the same list without being able to choose 'c' again. In cell A3 I want to be able to choose from the same list without being able to choose the values lalready chosen in A1 and A2. and so on.
