Automate Pop-up Error Message For Data Validation Purposes
Jul 18, 2014
Excel spreadsheet, that contains several columns. Three of these columns contain text data that is selected by using a simple drop-down menu sourced from a list. If an attempt is made to enter text data not in the associated list an error message is displayed. Easy so far.
I need need to extend the text data validation across all three columns so that only specific combinations of the text in the three columns can be used which is reflected in a further list. These combinations will be counted elsewhere and so needed. Therefore, if i attempt to enter a combination of text columns that is not reflected in the list, this too will present an error message stating 'combination not valid', or words to this effect.

I have a spreadsheet which I have formatted with validation rules for each cell. I have protected the sheet so that only certain cells can have info entered.
I also have a second spreadsheet with a bunch of data. If I copy this data and Paste Special it into my specially formatted sheet (Values only), all of the data copies over regardless of my preset validation rules.
I would like error messages to pop up for every incorrect value though.

The codes in E column are what is entered in a worksheet range (user cannot see the list). Needed is to show both the two-character code in column E and the text definitions in column F in the dropdown. As data validation now works, users only see the two-character code and are not remembering what the code stands for - they need to see the definition.
Is there a way to show both the two-character code from column E along with the text in column F? When user selects, only the code would be entered in the target cell. (Is data validation the correct technique?)
I have set this problem up in closely located cells to construct the issue. In reality, the validation list is well off-screen from where the user is actually inserting the codes and there are many more codes/definitions.

I thought what I wanted would be simpler than I have found. What I am trying to achieve is for any user trying to enter anything other than a "Y" into a cell would get an error message. In a nutshell I have in column A colleague names and from there 7 columns representing the days of the week split by a "spacer" column. This goes on for seven 4 week periods followed by a column that calculates how many "Y"s and into a formula that gives a running percentage.
My problem is that as there are several people that input data, some put multiple "Y"s so making the formulas throw up erroneous figures. That is why I am after a simple solution to stop any entry other than a "Y". I am guessing this would be better done via macro code?

On my spreadsheet, I have a large number of statistical calculations based on user-entered data.
Some of these depend on the number of replicates the user enters, so I have cells such as =COUNT(A1:A20) in A21.
Obviously, some things go wrong if there is only one piece of data, so I would like to have a message box appear if, for instance, the count is < 3.
Data validation doesn't seem to work, as A21 is the result of a formula, not user-entered data.

I have problems with setting Validation input title and message. When in column "C" I type product code, data validation of corresponding cell in column "D" changes to list of diameters allowed for that product. That works fine. But i also want to set validation message to show allowed diameters.I set it in VBA using named ranges.
But for every second line (13, 15, etc on attached file) I get an application-defined or object-defined error. The rest (14, 16 etc) works ok.

I currently have 6 cells that Have a Validation Criteria of a "List". I'm using the Input Message on the Data Validation box. I need to have this Input Message Pinned to a specific area on my worksheet. Each time that I exit and reopen the file the Input Message returns to the Area around the dropdown box. The input message is different for each of the 6 cells.

Cells A1 to A10 contain names of different cars, what i would like to do in VBA is when i select any individual cell to the right of these the name of the car appears as a message (as if i had gone DATA -> VALIDATION -> INPUT MESSAGE -> CARS NAME).
Tried positioning a Userform next to the active cell but when i scroll down the page and select a cell the userform is to far down the screen to be seen.

I have an input msg for a cell (in the data validation box). Whenever the cell is selected, it pops up the message box right by the cell, is there any ways we can position the msg box at our discretion? I can drag it down while the cell is selected but even if I save the file and re open and then select the cell, the msg box pops up right by the cell and not the place where i had dragged it earlier.

I have multiple data validations with input messages. For the new user, this is handy, but for the person that does this a lot, they get in the way. When I open the sheet, I can move one message to the side of the page and the rest of them come up at the same spot but when I save, exit, and reopen, the message comes up beside the cell and I would like it to always stay to the side of the page.

I have four cells c1 thru c4. The SUM of these cells must equal 1. I want to display an error message "sum of cells not equal to 1.0" but only when data has been entered in all four cells.
For instance =SUM(C1:C4, "<>1") should display the error message. Is there a way to write the formula with an IF statement and still use data validation with error message box?
Assumptions:
-Will ignore blanks
-Error message "Sum of cells are not equal to 1.0" until values in all four cells have been entered, not after a value is entered in a cell. (validate expression after all four cells have values or blank)
Scenarios:
c1 = .25, c2 is blank, c3 = .25, c4 = .50 TRUE no error message should displays
c1 = .25, c2 = .25, c3 = .25, c4 = .50 TRUE no error message should displays
c1 = .25, c2 = .30, c3 = .25, c4 = .50 FALSE error message should display after value is entered in c4
etc
What I don't want is for the error message box to display after .25 is entered in c1 because the user is still in the process of adding values. Can this be done using Data Validation in Excel 2010?

code that will be able to lookup a cell in Column J of Sheet1 by using a lookup value on Sheet2. The lookup value can be any cell in columns B, D, F, H, J, K, or N on Sheet2. The tricky part is, I want the result of this lookup (the result comes from Column H of Sheet1) to be placed as a data validation input message for the cell directly to the right of the lookup value when this cell is clicked.
For Example: Lookup Value is "416991" which lies in cell N8 on Sheet2. Look it up in Column J of Sheet1 and return the appropriate value "X" from Column H of Sheet1. "X" will then appear as an input message when cell O8 of Sheet2 is clicked.

how to play with data ranges and define names for charts to automatically update them by using the formula offset + counta. An example would be: =OFFSET(Sheet1!$B$7,0,0,COUNTA(Sheet1!$B$6:$B$37)-1).
So, the problem comes when there is a need to select a data range which is not that well defined like $B$6:$B$37. So, I need to import data regularly into my workbook, this data will be imported right below of the last cell with values.
Now, how would I manage to automatically select the data range from this new import for my chart? See attached example. I have highlighted in Yellow a potential import... there is no data in there so feel freel to fill it with any numbers you like.
I have tried to use a vlookup to find Country+Programme+Year (cat1 in the example) in the 'counta' part of the formula above. But I get lost,as a vlookup would retrieve a value and would not be useful for the data range?

What is this error message that is popping up when I try to insert a blank row of cells?
"To prevent possible loss of data, Excel cannot shift nonblank cells off of the worksheet. Select another location in which to insert new cells, or delete data from the end of your worksheet.
If you do not have data in cells that can be shifted off the worksheet, you can reset which cells Excel considers nonblank. To do this, press CTRL + End to locate the last nonblank cell on the worksheet. Delete this cell and all cells between it and the last row and column of your data then save."
This excel document we have has LARGE amounts of data

Below is a macro I recorded to help copy 'Paste Special - values only' data between two spreadsheets that have different colour and conditional formatting in cells.
However, if this is run and there is no data to paste, it throws up the End and Debug error.
Any chance that someone knows that if there is no data sitting on the Clipboard, then a msg box would appear saying "Please select the data you require to be copied" in the message box.
Sub data_input()
ActiveSheet. Unprotect
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValues, Operation:=xlNone, SkipBlanks _

Range("B5:AG4804").Select
Selection.sort Key1:=Range("B5"), Order1:=xlAscending, Header:=xlGuess, _

DataOption1:=xlSortNormal
Range("B5").Select
ActiveSheet.Protect

I am trying to create a simple xy graph in Excel 2010 using dynamic source data.
I have data in three columns.
There are headings on line 2 and the data starts on line 3.
A B C
1.
2. dp ss ff
3 .1 .2 .3
4 .3 .4 .4
5 .4 .8 .7
6 .1 .6 .8
7 .3 .5 .1
8 .5 .4 .4
I want to create an XY chart with C3 to C8 as the X axis (or dynamic to what ever the last data point is) with A3 to A8 as the Y axis (or dynamic to what ever the last data point is).
I have Defined names for C3 to C8 (myXvalues) and A3 to A8 (myYvalues).
I have created a simple XY graph and selected the ranges as normal.
This is =DATA(,Data!$C$3:$C$9,Data!$A$3:$A$9,1)
The page is named DATA
What I am trying to do now is to edit this range to make the range dynamic.Unfortunately I get error messages which ever way I try to edit the range.
I have tried:-
=SERIES('Data'!$c$3,'Data'!myXvalues,'Data'!$A$3,'Data'!myYvalues,1)
=SERIES('Data','Data'!myXvalues, 'Data'!myYvalues,1)
=SERIES(,Data!myXvalues,Data!$myYvalues,1)
=SERIES(Data!,Data!myXvalues,Data!myYvalues,1)
The data range can go from 8 to 30000 hence the need for a dynamic range!
PS: Also, is there any way to create this graph and dynamic source data in VBA. I have tried this with no success.

I am currently creating a form to hold 2 drop down lists that change depending on the selection in the first one. I had never done this before and taught myself and got it to work minus one problem. As soon as I input the formula under the Data Validation the error: "The Source currently evaluates to an error. Do you want to continue?" pops up. Right now the formula works except for the last 6 options in my first drop down. When I select them nothing pops up in the 2nd drop down menu. I have double checked and triple checked that I have no spaces or anything in my LIST on worksheet 2 or any of the names are input correctly.
A7 is the first drop down - PROPOSED
B7 the second. - ITEM #
Lists and data to populate the lists are on worksheet 2 with the "List" at the bottom of worksheet 2...

I'm working on a function that gets its values from a Data Validation List.
My problem is that I want the function to return a value when an item in the list is selected and another if the user did not make a selection... just a basic if....then....else ... but the cell where I call this function shows the #VALUE! error while no item in the list is selected.
I call the function like this:
=myFunction(RC[-5], RC[-2])
where RC[-5] is the Data Validation List and RC[-2] is a cell where the user should enter a number
why I'm getting the #VALUE! error instead of my message
The function basically looks like this:

I have a excel document that is very heavy with Data Validation List Boxes. Below is just one example. Error handling is what I am trying to figure out.
Description:
I have 3 List Boxes.
One list box data is based on data selected in the previous list box.
1st List Box uses this formula: =Series
2nd List Box uses this formula: =INDIRECT($C$2)
3rd List Box uses this formula: =INDIRECT($C$3)
It all works! HOWEVER....
If user decides to go back and change selection in first or second list box, and forgets to change the data in the second or third box, then data will be incorrect. How do I solve this problem?
Is there anyway to write something so it would give them an error message and instructing them to correct the data?

Error in data validation: "A named range you specified cannot be found." However, the named ranges are in the Name Manager, and if I go to the sheet and select the range, I can see it is already named.
Full description:
I created a spreadsheet model (no VBA, just formulas, etc) in a workbook that another coworker took and added VBA to. However, he was not working with the most updated version. So last night I checked the sheets which had the same names, made sure there were no differences except the changes I had made since that version, and then moved the ones from my current workbook into his workbook.
On the sheet where the user was to input details of the report, there are 4 cells that each contain different lists (non-dependent). I want the user to only be able to choose one of the 4 drop down menus - that is, if any of the 4 cells are filled in, I would like the other 3 to default to N/A (or somehow not be allowed to be chosen). This was solved in a previous thread:
Using A1: =IF(COUNTA(A2:A4),NA(),G2:G6) from the other thread solution, I used a named range instead of G2:G6 and it worked well.
When I merged the files together, the 4 cells no longer worked at all. It was suggested that I look at the Name Manager, and some of te named ranges I had were in there multiple times. I cleaned them up.
I tried to enter the same formula again, and it gave me the specific error: "A named range you specified cannot be found." However, the named ranges are in the Name Manager, and if I go to the sheet and select the range, I can see it is already named.
I am unable to load the spreadsheet due to sensitive data, and removing the data would make the workbook make no sense.

I'm using Data Validation for various fields in a form and I'm trying to make it user friendly by adding Error Alert conditions and text explaining why the error has occurred. I also want the form to be translatable into other languages.
For some VBA message boxes that get displayed I can put the English text in some hidden cells and that can be translated easily by someone without access to the code. But I cannot figure out how to make the Data Validation Error Alert messages point to a cell so that they are also translatable without forcing the translator to open each Data Validation dialog.

I'm trying to automate a process (just like everyone else), and it doesn't seem to be working for me. I have two Excel sheets. One sheet contains errors for disk drives and the other sheet contains the serial numbers of the disk drives. Five fields exist in both sheets. These fields are B (for Bus), E (for Enclosure), D (for Disk), Bus, and Disk. (B-E-D together and Bus-Disk are two ways of naming a drive.)
The serial number sheet has all info filled in. The error sheet does not. I won't to write a macro that will compare the B-E-D fields in the error sheet to those in the serial number sheet, and then copy and paste the corresponding Bus-Disk information into the error sheet. The reason I want to do this is because the error sheet will not contain all drives and be in random order. So it needs to be able to search through all the B-E-D fields every time to pull out the correct Bus-Disk numbers/letters.
Sub Insert_Bus_and_Disk()
Set Sh1 = Worksheets(1)
Set Sh2 = Worksheets(2)
Dim CompareRange1 As Object
Dim CompareRange2 As Object
Dim CutRange As Object
Dim CopyRange As Object....................

I am looking for a more efficient way to write a macro (a sample from the macro is below). This is just the first part of the macro. I need to repeat these same steps (seen for row 5 below) for rows 5 to 50. My script worked until I hit row 35 and then I got the "compile error.." message. There must be a way to use "loop" to write this more efficiently, no?

is it posible to control the positioning of the pop-up data validation input messsage box via vba? As often it obscures the view of critical cells below.
You can manually click and drag it to a desired position manually. Mana users are not aware of that. It would be desirable to reposition it elsewhere rogramatically.

I am using data validation input messages for data entry tips/definitions. The data entry cells are grouped in small tables (about 5 rows X 6 columns) so when the user clicks on a cell, the data validation input message box pops up next to the active cell. This covers the adjacent cells which need to be completed as well.
If I drag the message box over to right of the input table, the messages for the other cells stay in the new location as well. However, Excel doesn't remember this location the next time the workbook is opened.
Is there a way to set the location of the message box or some other way to achieve the same objective of having text boxes pop up in a defined location when a cell is activated?
