View 2 RepliesI need to convert thousands of files from .csv to .xls format. Filenames are numbers (1.csv ... 20000.csv). Filenames do not change.
Could just open, Save As, and Close.
Is there a simple way to run a macro once and convert everything? I don't know how to code the macro to open one file, convert, then close, then open the next...
I want to show numbers on my excel spreadhseet in thousands. However, the challenge is I want to show negtive numbers in red within brackets. For instance, I have a number -104,784,089. I want to display it as (104,784) in red color. Similarly, I want to show 577,090 as 577. Is there a customer formatting I can set up in excel that do that?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been setting the above property to TRUE after making some changes in the Workbook_open event in order to stop annoying messages if you haven't physically made changes.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to copy through to the workbook_beforeclose event and I'm being asked if I want to save changes even though the macro made the changes and then set the property.
Here's my code for the open event :-
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
On Error Resume Next
For counter = Worksheets.Count To 2 Step -1
Sheets(counter).Visible = xlVeryHidden
Next
Sheets("Desktop").Visible = True
Sheets(1).Visible = xlVeryHidden.....
In the ID column of the attached excel file whenever I convert the numbers stored as text to numbers it results in a weird transformation.
e.g. an ID of 480610141001 becomes 4.8061E+11. When I do the same process in the name column, which has similar numbers, it will give the correct result following the same process.
I have been looking through the forums and found the below code, but I have both text and numbers in the same range. I have attached an example of what I need to have converted.
Book1.xlsx
See attached file. A colleague is downloading rows of data from a website which contains a number field Excel is currently treating as Text after being pasted in. My spreadsheet includes just a sample of the many rows of data however as you can see the VALUE function refuses to convert these text values to numbers. How these might be converted and why the VALUE function refuses to work in this case?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe back story is that from a system we use, when you download data from inside it, Excel treats most of the cells with a "Number Stored As Text" error. I had problems with this and it was just generally annoying so I wrote the below macro that converts each of the cells back to general cells and reinputs the data, essentially reseting the cell and keeping the data. Being that this is a loop, it takes a good while to run if alot of data was downloaded. Any idea's on how to speed it up besides screen updating? Note, other stuff happens in the first macro, but it is just cosmetic non-intensive things. It calls the second macro because I wanted them seperate should I want to just run the second.
Sub CleanData()
Application. ScreenUpdating = False
' Find the Right most cell and the Bottom most cell and
' run the macro from A1 to this cell recursively
Range("IV1").End(xlToLeft).Select
Col = Selection.Column
Range("A65536").End(xlUp).Select
Row = Selection.Row
Range("A2").Select
Range("A1", Cells(Row, Col)).Select
Application.Run ("FixTextAsNumberError")
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
'
End Sub..............
I have the following two macros that I use daily:
Public Sub add_tick_marks()
Dim c As Range
For Each c In Selection
If Not IsError(c.Value) Then
If Left(c.Value, 1) <> "'" And c.Value <> "" Then
If InStr(c.Value, "E+") > 0 Then
c.Value = "'" & c.Formula
Else
I use these because I frequently copy billing account numbers that have leading zeros from some proprietary software and work with them in Excel. I need the leading zeros to facilitate VLookUp's. When I paste the data into Excel it truncates the leading zeros. My typical procedure is:
1. Copy a column of values from our proprietary software
2. Paste it in Excel (Ctrl+V)
3. While newly pasted data is still selected I hit Ctrl+1 which brings up the Format Cells form.
4. I double click "Text"
5. I re-paste into Excel (Ctrl+V)
6. I run my macro to add tic marks to the values so the leading zeros never get lost.
The problem occurs when I copy multiple columns of data and paste it in Excel. If one of the columns of data contains numbers or currency then I select that range of values and run the macro to get rid of the tic marks. After running the macro the numbers are still treated as text. When I select a range of those values and right-click on the status bar and select " Sum" there is no value. No big deal, I just highlight them and format the cells as numbers or currency. But after formatting them as numbers or currency, they retain their format as text until I click in the formula bar for each individual cell and hit enter, at which time they take on the number or currency format I have chosen and the sum can then be displayed in the status bar.
How can I force the formatting I chose to take effect on the data immediately without me having to individually "fake change" the data in each cell?
I have text as numbers downloaded to excel sheets from crystal that i need to add together on a summary sheet. I've tried using Value, TRIM and CLEAN functions to no avail. the TYPE function is reading the cell as Text and I have also tried multiplying by 1. Does anybody know how I can get around this ? hopefully I've attached an extract of the file

I have a simple spreadsheet for keeping track of gas mileage which I have been using for over two years with no problems. I have five columns A through E and right now I'm on row 72, that's where the problem started. When I enter the starting mileage in A and tab to B it changes the mileage number to a date and as my mileage number I type in changes the date also changes as I tab to B. See the sample below.
A B C D E
15357155968.491 28.14745024239
9/12/19420:00 10.44423.36269628244
The part that puzzles me is it does it in row 72, 73, 74, 75, and 76 then it goes back to working normal, and even though it puts the date in A and zeros in B it does the math right. I looked at column A and B for those rows and there isn't any formulas in them.
I Have a formula in column D =(B72-A72)/C72 and column E is just =B72-A72. Other then that the only other formulas I have is in column B row 177 it gives me total miles, in 178 it gives me total gallons, and in 179 it gives me average MPG.
When I run a report, for some reason our system imports certain numbers which have errors, as a consequence when I try and do a pivot table I get a lot of returns showing #div/o!. If you look at the spreadsheet the errors start on line 103 sheet 2 and finish on 2631. Sometime the report can be huge and takes a while to go through these manually to convert to numbers.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have received an excel file from an external source. Every time I change a number in a cell it reverts to a 2 decimal number. eg. I type in 8710 and it converts the value to 87.10. I have looked at the number formats, cleared the numbers format but I keep getting the same result. I have also e-mailed the file to someone else and everything is ok on their computer. Is there a property in the excel program that I need to change?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a workbook full of six digit numbers that I need to manipulate but can't. They have been data-dumped from a server and copied as non-numeric values.
I have tried EVERYTHING I could find on how to convert these column cells to numeric fields:
Multiplying by 1 - didn't work
VBA Code - For Each xCell In Range("a1:a1012")
xCell.Value = xCell.Value
Next xCell -didn't work
Format Cells as numbers - didn't work
Format Cells as general - didn't work
Remove Spaces - didn't work
Text to Columns - didn't work
This is how the data is stored.

I need to create a formula to convert the number into millions. I want to do this in the format cell >> Custom in the excel sheet.
Suppose the number is 2000000 the it should show as 2.
I am creating a spreadsheet to manage Block ID conflicts when adding mods to a Minecraft Server. Example spreadsheet is attached.
Description: Column A contains a list of available numbers (e.g. 1-20 and 31-50). Column B contains a list of numbers a new mod tries to use up by default (i.e. 1-25). A number in Column B that is not in Column A must be changed to the nearest number that is in Column A. In this example, numbers 21-25 in B are not available in A and must be changed to 31-35, respectively. Column C should be the result of changing Column B (i.e. 1-20 and 31-35).
Issue: The main problem is that as a given cell in Column B changes, that number needs to become unavailable in Column A for the next change. For example, when 21 in B returns 31, 31 can no longer be used for the next number in B (22).
I have been able to use VLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH functions to lookup the numbers to be changed.
What is the formula to cover multiple different text that could come up? I could have an answer that is NA, Yes and also a blank cell and if I could I would like to have it set up as follows:
NA = -
Blank Cell = 0
Yes = 1
Is it possible for excel to monitor Row J for a letter "Y". If a "Y" is put into a cell in row J a macro runs. If the "Y" was in column 6 I need the macro to copy A6 B6 C6 D6 E6 F6 etc to other cells on a different worksheet.If "Y" was in column 7 it will copy A7 B7 C7 etc to the same other cells on a different worksheet.

Is there any formula or easy way to automate the changing of a numeric input into words, eg if you input 100 in one cell, the output in another would be "one hundred"?
View 9 Replies View RelatedOne of my colleagues wants Excel only to show whole thousands, but I am not sure how to do this
For example, if the number is 78654.98, he only wants it to show 78.
Is this possible?
On my indows XP box, when I type a number into an Excel spreadsheet and it is in "General" format, the numbers appears like this (examples):
1234567
or this:
7.125
or this:
8.1
I want them to look just like that except for the first one, which I want to have the thousands separator:
1,234,567
I don't want to use a number format because
Excel makes you set a specific number of decimal places...I want the decimal places to float depending on how many decimal places there are in the entered number (just like the "General" format does). So basically, I want a "General" format, but with thousands separators (commas).
I tried using something like ###,###.### but that leaves a decimal place at the end of each integer (i.e. "123,456.") which is also not acceptable.
i want to convert numbers to letters in the excel Sheet

For my research in medicine I build a spreadsheet with google docs. After having received most of the data I transfered the spreadsheet into an excel file. The next thing I would like to do is to convert the words in the spreadsheet into numbers so I can calculate with them. For example: every row in column E consist of one of the two words: 'man' or 'woman'. I would like to convert the word 'man' into a '0' and the word 'woman' into a '1'. Is it possible to write a formula or function for this?
