How To Copy Linked Excel And Word Files And Retain Links

May 30, 2013

I have links between Excel files and Word files. I use these files for multiple projects. When I copy them and paste them to a new folder the new files would be linked together. For some reason this has stopped. Now when I copy, the Word file has links to the original document, not to the copied document.

Excel 2007 :: Cutting Portion Of Cell Value To Cell Comments

I have an Excel 2007 workbook with several sheets, and various cells in several of the sheets have column headers with a description in the same cell enclosed in curly brackets, e.g. Header{Description}. Excel 2007 :: Change Username In Mouseover Status Bar Message For Cell Comments?

May 30, 2012

I am having with Excel 2007.

When I hover the mouse over a cell with comments, the status bar displays a message; for example "Cell A12 commented by A satisfied Microsoft Office user".

I only get this message for one column. The cells in all other columns give my first and second name as the author of the cell comment.

Why it is only effecting one column. I have been unable to change the annoying "commented by A satisfied Microsoft Office user" to my own name.

Is there a macro that can do this? I tried two macros I found online, both from a few years back, but neither of them worked.

Excel 2007 :: Picture Created With Unique Names - Adding Comments To Cell

Oct 23, 2012

Excel 2007

I have a few dozen pictures created when a macro runs. They all have unique names. I'd like to add comments to cells, where the cell.value decides which picture to pull. All the examples I've found online show how to do this if you have pictures saved on your hard drive by referencing the file path "c://mydocs/...blahblah/"

Is there a way to reference the pictures I've created/named with my macro?

Here's the snippet of code that creates the pictures and names them:

Code:
For i = 2 To Application.CountA(Sheets("Allocation").Rows(1))
Sheets("Allocation").Activate
Set rInput = Sheets("Allocation").Range(Cells(1, i), Cells(10, i))
sPicName = "_" & Sheets("Allocation").Cells(1, i) & "_"
sSheet = Sheets("Allocation").Cells(3, i)
dDate = Sheets("Allocation").Cells(5, i)

[Code] ......

Here are some examples that are close to what I'm looking for.

Cell Comments - Not Going Into Edit Mode

Jul 9, 2007

I am using a lot of double click routines in my sheet. In order for the sheet to be more user friendly I have used the comments of cells to tell the user what to do. For instance "Double click to choose type" or some such. Everything works great except that after the user selects what they want from the userform and it hides and the focus comes back to the sheet, the comment is in edit mode. While this is not horrible it is not as nice as I would like. I have tried to have my code send the active cell to another cell and then back, but that doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the comments from going into edit mode?

However, the unprotect button on the changes group tab is greyed out (the protect button is available though). The workbook isn't password protected and I'm not being asked for a password. What am I missing?

Edit Excel Formula Links To Use Environment Variables Instead Of Static Absolute Paths

Sep 30, 2013

Is there a way that formula links in spreadsheets can use environment variables to reference formulas in other spreadsheets/addins?

For example, I have a spreadsheet that imports templates which call functions in an addin. The spreadsheet, templates and the addin could be installed into either the 'Program Files' or the 'Program Files (x86)' folders.

I am experiencing issues with the formula references when moved between 32 and 64 bit computers since Excel seems to store the full path of the addin in the Excel formula (even though it hides it when the reference resolves its path) in my templates. I would like to update the references in my templates so that they use an environment variable (set by my software installer) to always know the correct path of the addin.

In Excel 2003, spreadsheet links are edited via: 'Edit'->'Links'
In Excel 2007 and higher,'Data'->'Edit Links'

Retain Formula Links When Inserting Template Worksheet

Feb 13, 2008

I have a template file which has a reference to a cell on a sheet in another workbook.

I need to copy this template to 250 workbooks. However, everytime I copy this template sheet into a workbook, it updates the reference to the template name!
Is there an absolute reference I can use for the sheetname?

Example: Workbook Template - Sheet1 - Cell A1 = Value
Workbook Template - Sheet2 - Cell A1 = Sheet1!$A$1

So for so good, but when I copy Sheet2 to a new workbook, I need to have the exact same reference; ie. Sheet1$A$1 and NOT = ['C:Workbook template']Sheet1!$a$1

Excel 2007 :: Updating Workbooks Containing Links To Other Files

Sep 12, 2010

I and my organization have many files created using Excel 2003. I have now upgraded to Excel 2007 and soon I discovered a huge problem.

- When opening a file using Excel 2007 that was created with Excel 2003 the links in that file is automatically updated even though I get the edit links dialog and choose not to update.

After searching for a solution on the Internet I realize that this is a problem that exist when Excel opens a file created in an earlier version. Microsoft has no solution.

I need to be in control of which links that are updated and not.

Going back to excel 2003 is not an option. Saving the source files in Excel 2007 is not an option.

Excel 2007 :: Stop Links Changing When Use SaveAs To Create Backup?

Sep 25, 2013

I have two spreadsheets that are linked in Excel 2007. They both hold very different information about the same projects, so each row shares some information. However, they are both very large and I do not want to combine them in case the whole spreadsheet becomes unusable. I'm not allowed to use a database

When I save Spreadsheet 1 in a different location, so that I have a backup of the precious data, the link in Spreadsheet 2 changes to show that new location. I want the link to stay at the old location.

Is there a way to stop the link changing when I use SaveAs, so that when I open Spreadsheet 2 it refers to the original location of Spreadsheet 1?

Change/Edit External Links

Dec 12, 2007

Is it possible to update external links on a worksheet via running a macro?
I have a worksheet where some cells have external links to other files, and every month I have to scroll through and do the typing in order to have everything up and running.
A typical cell has formulas like =[E:ReportsAug-2007.xls]Data!F25
Another cell =[E:ReportsAug-2007.xls]Data!F43
and so on.

Every new month I actually have to replace all [E:ReportsAug-2007.xls] occurrences with for example [E:ReportsSep-2007.xls]. So, is it possible to have a macro which opens a textbox of which i can type the new month 'Sep', so that when the macro runs I save all the typing?

Edit Links When New Worksheet Added

Jun 27, 2008

[url]

I was wondering if it is possible to update links from one worksheet to another that contains a running tally - even when another worksheet is added and needs to be linked to the running tally as well?

I have attached a sample workbook. What I have is a summary sheet ( Sum Hrs CMS) that has SUMIF calculations for a series of rows in the Estimate Sheet.

The problem that I have run into is - when you press the Add New Sheet button on the Estimate sheet, it copies hidden sheet and inserts it at the end of the workbook, however I then need the hours in the CMS portion to link to the summary sheet. What I was wondering is how do the links on the 'Sum Hrs CMS' sheet include this new sheet and the data that is entered on it?

Unable To Edit Links With Workbook Open Because Of Invalid Reference?

May 31, 2013

I'd prefer to edit links with the source workbook open, however I receive this error when I do "A formula in this worksheet contains one or more invalid references." I am able to edit links with the source workbook closed but this takes far too much time to be satisfied with that as the solution. I have used vlookup formulas and the index-match method and they both take about the same amount of time to update. I've separated each worksheet and used the "name manager" add-in and have searched all links for any type of error. I feel like I'm missing something. Is there a way to fix this "invalid reference" error so that I can edit my links with the source workbook open?

Copy Entire Row By Range & Suppress 'Cannot Edit Links' Message

Jun 25, 2008

I have 10 workbooks which have various calculations and have several links to each other. We use Excel 2003.

For each of these files, I have the following code in the Auto_Open module
Range Range(“TodayComp”) is a date taken form a link in another spreadsheet. It is on Column 3, but the row changes every day as more rows are inserted before it

This sub looks at Range(“TodayComp”) and checks the date on the cell directly above.

If say Range(“TodayComp”) is 6/25/2008, and the cell above is 6/22/2008, it will insert three rows right above Range(“TodayComp”). These rows need to be copied with formulas from the current row above Range(“TodayComp”)

Issue One:
The following code works (it copies the rows), but it takes forever to run, as you can see in bold, I copy and paste each cell, instead of the entire row.
Is there a way to copy and paste the entire row? Remember that I have only a named range to refer to, no cell address as it changes every time.

Public Sub Auto_open()
Update_Dates()
End Sub

Public Sub Update_Dates()
Dim tdy, prev As Date
Dim index, i, j, yr, no_inserts As Integer

Sheets("Comparison Computation").Activate

Adjusting External Cell Reference (Links) In Excel

Aug 7, 2013

The goal is to have a data validation drop down list that adjusts the File.xls name portion of the external cell reference (example given below) and return the result of the cell I am searching in the new file after updating my links.

I am trying to set up an external cell refence within my workbook for example:
='[File.xls]Tab'!$C$9

When I have tried setting the equation to pull from the drop down list in cel A1 for example:
="'["&A1&"]Tab'!$C$9"

It only shows the new file path name and not the value in the new sheet--even after updating links.

I am also attempting to do this using the my network places file path instead of the letter drive in my computer.

Office 2007 - Where Has The 'do You Want To Update Links' Box Gone

I'm opening an Excel file that automatically attempts to update links when I open it, but I am not prompted with the choice to cancel, or update links, when I open the file, like I was in Office 2003.

I have checked the Excel Options, Advanced, General, 'Ask to update automatic links' box, but I still don't get the dialog box when I open the file.

The file is just riddled with VALUE errors. A colleague of mine who opens the file in Office 2003 can see all the data fine.
