Excel 2007 :: Using INDEX And MATCH Function To Return Header Value

Mar 26, 2013

currently using Excel 2007 with Windows Vista.

I currently have a worksheet where I want to input a date (G2) and a rank value (H2) ranging from 1 to 4. The header value (B1:E1) corresponding to the date (A2:A4) and the rank (B2:B4) should be returned to I2 (currently returns #NA).

Using formula: =INDEX($B$1:$E$1,MATCH(H2,INDEX($B$2:$E$4,MATCH(G2,$A$2:$A$4),)))

which I found under: Find row, find value, then return column heading

However, the above formula does not seem to work with my date order or recurring data values of 1 to 4 over the 3 rows.

The worksheet layout is as follows:

Date

A

B
C
D

Date

Rank

Header

[code]....

The return value under Header should be C.

I have reversed the order of the dates and put sequential numbers in B2:B4 as plug variables and the above formula will return the correct Header value but I need the formula to work with the current date order and repeating rank values of 1 to 4 in B2:B4. Do not wish to use VBA.

Excel 2007 :: Match Data In Two Columns And Return Header

Apr 20, 2012

I have two columns with team abbreviations, one simply says whether they are AL or NL the other is the result of a search with multiple occurrences of the team name. I need to match the long list with the short and put the column header AL or NL in the adjacent cell.

I'm using Excel 2007

The last formula I tried was =INDEX($AY$1,MATCH(BB2,$AY$2:$AY$15,0),0)

The screen shot actually just part of the sheet copied since the screen shot look like a broken html page Ok I give up. I copy and paste a jpg it turns into code, I copy and paste the spreadsheet and formatting vanishes, I don't have a URL for the picture... I did look at FAQs and didn't find picture rules but I will look again. Meanwhile. . .

It's just six columns of data. The short list is in AY from AY2 : AY15
The long list is in BB from BB2:BB505
The column header "AL" is in AY1 and NL is in AZ1

Excel 2007 :: Index And Match Function With Logical Test

Feb 28, 2013

excel 2007. Here is the situation:

I am using the Index and Match function to lookup for two specific criterias in a different worksheet. So far, it is working well, but it gets complicated. I want to look for the criterias in 6 different worksheets based on what a certain column is saying. Here is an example:

A
B
C
D

[Code].....

So, if the continent is Asia in the column A, I want Excel to look in the Asia worksheet for the city and the venue and return me the contact information. Same, if the continent says Europe, I want it to look in the Europe worksheet or the city and the venue and return me the contact information. So on and so forth.

The formula I have at the moment is this:

{=INDEX('Asia'!$1:$1048576;MATCH(B3&C3;'Asia'!D:D&'Asia'!E:E;0);9)}

How do I incorporate the logical test for it to look for the proper worksheet knowing that all my continent worksheet have the same structure?

Index / Match Return Header Value Based On Row And Cell Value

Apr 24, 2012

I have a rather large table that I need to return the column heading from.

Within the table I have a list of Names in the left most Column (A) and a list of Percentiles in the header row (row 2) (incrementing by 5%). By inputting the name and a cell value I am trying to return the column header.

Using an example;

5% 10% 15%
Bob 3.5 4.1 4.15
John 3.6 4.2 4.30
Chris 3.3 4.9 4.95
Sammy 3.7 4.6 4.7

Like I said, knowing the name and the cell value, I want to return the percentage value. So for example, Bob would be one input value, and another input value would be 4.1. I would want excel to return 10%.

I have found different suggestions using a combination of index/match but even using these functions I cannot get it to return the COLUMN value instead of a cell value.

Excel 2003 :: Index And Match - Table With Header Row Of Scores

What I am after is the average for each location so that in L5 I can say 'for all the respondents for Location 1, the average was:...

Formula To Return Array To Use In Index / Match Function?

May 8, 2013

I need to find a way to find an array in a tab to use for an index/match function I have.

this is what i would normally use: =index(tab_array,match($a2, tab!$a$1:$a$1000,0),match($B$1,tab!$a$1:$zz$1,0))

This formula would usually work fine when I know that within the tab, the array in which the row match is searching doesn't change. However, that array may change in the future, to say column H, without my knowing as it is a database that gets automatically populated from an upstream system.

Is there a way to search for an array within an index/match?

Excel 2007 - Vlookup / Index / Match With Two Datasets On Two Sheets

May 22, 2014

I have two data sets across two worksheets. The first worksheet contains sales order numbers (Sheet1:column A) and other data . The second worksheet contains sales order numbers (Sheet2:column A) and the product details.

On sheet1, I had to manually duplicate a sales order number (inserting another row) if the number of units of the order is greater than 1. I then need to fetch the product details from sheet2 for each unit for that specific order number. However in sheet2, there are multiple products for one sales order number.

How do i create a lookup/match to fetch the product details for each sales order number without duplicating the product details if there are multiple products for one sales order number?

I know a simple vlookup function will return the values that it matches first and that is not what i want.

Example: Sheet1

Column A (Sales Order#) | Column B (Quantity)

0417436GPCP | 1

Excel 2007 :: Index Match VBA Multiple Worksheets Many Rows

Jul 30, 2014

I have a workbook that has 5 worksheets. Worksheet1 is the Summary tab, Worksheets 2-5 contains data all sitting under the same headings and formats however vary in row number e.g.

Worksheet 2 - 63000 rows
Worksheet 3 - 48000 rows
Worksheet 4 - 23000 rows
Worksheet 5 - 21000 rows

In Worksheet 1 Column AQ contains a Cost Centre number which I would like to extract the parent description of in Column BI of the same Worksheet and then the child description into Column BJ. Worksheet 1 currently has 16000+ rows and grows daily.The location of the Cost Centre in Worksheets 2-4 is contained in Column A and the Parent Description in Column W and the Child Description in Column Y.I am currently using this INDEX MATCH formula to search all worksheets but as you can imagine it's tediously slow and needless to say sometimes not reporting/updating the values correctly likely because it's frozen.

=VLOOKUP(AQ2,INDIRECT("'"&INDEX(Sheet1!$A$1:$A$4,MATCH(TRUE,
COUNTIF(INDIRECT("'"&Sheet1!$A$1:$A$4&"'!A2:A63355"),AQ2)>0,0))&"'!A2:W63355"),23,0) this looks up Cost Centre in Worksheet 1 Column AQ and returns the results from Column W in Worksheets 2-4 to Worksheet 1 Column BI

Excel 2010 :: Freezes When Using Pull Function In INDEX / MATCH

Feb 14, 2014

I am using Excel 2010.

My objective is to pull specific values from an external file corresponding to the correct name and year of my choosing. The first way I thought would be best is to use an INDEX/MATCH function. The problem is the external files change names so I would need a method to easily change the source file name from one cell. I then stumbled across the INDIRECT function, but the INDIRECT function will only work when the source file is also opened. I then came across Harlan Grove's pull function which allows you to import data from closed excel files.

So, this is what my formula looks like: =INDEX(pull("'"&G12&"");MATCH(C15;pull("'"&G14&"");0);MATCH(D15;pull("'"&G16&"");0))

Cells G12,G14, and G16 contain the file paths for the ranges. C15 is name and D15 is year.

The problem I have though is that when I try to execute the function, Excel gets stuck. if the code cannot handle large amounts of data. I tested the code with a simple SUM function for a small range from an external file and it worked just fine.

This is the code I am using:

Index And / Or Match Formula With Multiple Match Required To Return A Value

Jan 21, 2014

See attached file, "Rate Sample Index-Match Formula".

I need a formula to return the value at the cross section of two (2) lookup values that match. This formula will be input into column D under, "RATE" on the 1st tab, "TEST FILE".

In the 1st tab, "TEST FILE" there are a series of columns as follows;

A = Service
B = From
C = To
D = Rate

In the 2nd tab, "RATES" there is a series of rates with drivers From (green) & To (blue)

The formula needs to do the following;

1. Lookup the "From" value in column B on tab, "TEST FILE" and match to column B2:B59 on tab, "RATES" both highlighted in green
2. Then Lookup the "To" value in column C on tab, "TEST FILE" and match to row C1:BH1 on tab, "RATES" both highlighted in blue
3. Then return the value at the cross section of the match "From" (point 1 above) & "To" (point 2 above) in range C2:BH59

For Example;

The rate From SYD To CBR = 0.33. I have highlighted this in yellow on both tabs to show where the formula needs to lookup the data to return the answer.

Additionally, if we were to add service as an additional lookup match how would this work?

VLOOKUP / INDEX And MATCH To Return All Values That Match

Feb 4, 2014

I have two sheets of data , sheet A and Sheet B.

Sheet B contains a column called "Name" and for each name, and for each name there are corresponding numbers. In sheet A, I have a "list of interest" in column A. What i want to do look through the data in sheetB to find a match from the list of interest and return the corresponding letters, located in column A.

I have filled out the first two rows of results that should be returned as an example.

One idea i had was to put a vlookup formula in each column result 1 to result 6 so i can catch all 6 "Serves" columns from column B, but there may be duplicates in the serve columns and vlookup only reports the first match.

Nesting Index / Match Function Within Vlookup Function?

Dec 3, 2013

let me start by saying that I know an example workbook would be useful here, but the part I'm struggling with is the [managementroster.xlsm] file, and there is A. no way I can release it to the internets and B. its so huge/complicated I couldn't even begin to reproduce a portion of it, scrubbed of data, and hope to maintain its functionality in a meaningful manner.

[Code]....

This formula checks a staff number on this spreadsheet, and then goes and looks at the staff number on the roster. Once found, it returns that staff members roster, but changes any manager codes in the MRC list to Mgr, and changes all other roster codes to Free.

I now need this formula, before altering roster codes to Mgr or Free, to only return codes that are a match for another table (or after really. I don't particularly care, so long as only codes are shown that match data from another table). I think an index/match function would do the trick, but this forumula is already at the edge of my excel ability, nesting another function within it is completey beyond me. The relevant cells for the index/match function would be:

This first Match function targets the column. $E3 is the date required, $BA$1:$DN$1 is the range the dates are entered in
Match: Lookup value = $E3
Lookup array = '[ManagementRoster.xlsm]Vacancies!'$BA$1:$DN$1
match type = 0

This second Match function targets the row. $A$4 is the department name, $B$434:$B$452 is the range where all departments are entered

Match: Lookup value = $A$4
Lookup Array = '[ManagementRoster.xlsm]Vacancies!'$B$434:$B$452
match type = 0

Index: array = $BA$434:$DN$452

So I think my final function is

[Code] .....

But I have absolutely NO idea where it would fit within my first formula, or how to code it so that my original formula only reproduces results that are found in both sheets, or anything.

Index Match Smallest Return?

Jul 1, 2014

I am very competent using the index match formula and have incorporated this into many spreadsheets to auto-fill for avoiding input errors. The objective I am attempting now is to retrieve from a list of 2800 entries the smallest return on an index match formula.

From the data below if my Index Match formula uses C1 to index and match my return is always a7 (-12.7) the first in the list, where my desire is a return of a19 (-14.11). To complex this problem I often have duplicate amounts that need to be listed when they fall into my parameters. I have figured that the Small function allows me to assign first smallest, second smallest, and so forth.

I prefer not to use vlookup for simplicity and error avoidance issues.

Return Result From Match Not In Index?

Nov 10, 2011

What I want to do is, given the data in col. a, I want to supply a number(range) of strings which can be found in column a, whenever a string is found, which exists in given range, I want to write the string from the Key(col. c) in col b instead of the value from the string that matches a value.

See below for example of what I got working but not exactly what I was looking for

Col. A- Data
Orangegreen
Blackwhite
Blueyellow

Col. B - Result

Col. C - Keys
Orange
White
Yellow

I used

Code:
=INDEX(A1:A3,MATCH("*"&C1&"*",A1:A3,0))

This does produce a result, but not entirely what I am after.

This requires only one string to search for, and will in cell B1 result in a value of 'Orangegreen' as I can only supply one valeu to the function. What I want to do is supply the function with a range of values, and have those values outputtet in colb instead af the value of cells where the result is found.

I tried modifying the function to include a range, but that does not produce a valid result.

How to formulate this ... I'm guessing it's going to involve an index-match formula.

Index Match But Only Return Value If Cell To Right And Above 1 Is Negative?

Apr 3, 2014

I have an array formula which is working as expected returning the value of column K (offset by -1) if a number of criteria are matched.

[Code].....

The issue I'm having is there are occasionally duplicate values in column W and it's using the first value in its return, which isn't always correct.

Unfortunately due to the limited matches available the only way I can think to identify the correct value is by adding an additional criteria, which is that the correct value would always have a negative in Column X one cell above and to the right of where the value is being retrieved from. If there was no negative it would ignore this result.

Is there any way to add an additional criteria to the formula to stipulate that it must match a negative in column X but one cell above?

Can Index Or Match Return Multiple Results

I have a worksheet (let's call it DATA) with the following column headers:
* Site Name
* Year Initiated
* Status

plus a whole bunch of other columns of information.

On a separate worksheet (let's call it RESULTS) I'm trying to create a summary of all the Site Names where the Year Initiated = "2004" and the Status = "Active". There will be multiple occurences where this is true.

I then want to create further results where the year = 2005, 2006, etc., etc. I've been trying to use the INDEX function with variations of MATCH, SMALL, ROW, etc., etc., but so far, no luck.

Advanced Filtering is not an option as I need to do further manipulating of the results on the RESULTS worksheet.
