Excel 2010 :: Pivot Dynamic Name Range?
Jan 27, 2013
I am trying to insert a Pivot table with dynamic Name Ranges. It needs to start from Cell B1 as Column A has hidden formulas in them. I created an Dynamic Name range and tried to insert a pivot table. Excel then throws out a error stating "Data source reference is not valid". I tried re-saving the document but still no luck.

Had been using this formula for almost 3 years, recently the formula didn't work properly as the range goes down halfway only instead of to the last data in the column. I'm using Excel 2010 now.
=Sheet1!$A$2:INDEX(Sheet1!$A:$A,COUNTA(Sheet1!$A:$A))

how to use the offset function to create a dynamic range in Excel 2010. An in-house Excel form I work with spans columns A thru P and has three sections. In Section 2 the user fills in employees who are requesting to work overtime. Section 2 starts row 12 and ends row 61. It's sometimes necessary to add rows to this section. How do I make this section/range dynamic using the offset function?

How do I create a Named Range that is dynamic (I think using the OFFSET function) that automatically expands and contracts as the rows and columns of my data changes?
Next step, I then want to use that Named Range as the source of the data for a PivotTable.
Yes, I know starting in Excel 2007 you can use Tables and don't need to create a dynamic named range. That is not an option at this time.

I'm working in Excel 2010. I'm trying to create a dynamic range, using the OFFSET function. I've got it working beautifully but as soon as I save it and close the Name Manager the range stops working. When I go back into Name Manager I find all the cell references have changed (from C1:C600 to C1048572:C595 - or some other strange range).
P.S. What it's doing isn't so important as when the cell references are right it works. But just for full info: It's an OFFSET function, starting at A1. It will look at a list of companies and use a Match function to find out how many rows to offset (based on where the first instance of a particular company. And it uses the COUNTIF to make the range the same number of rows as there are entries for that company.
Here is my broken function:
=OFFSET('Map Point'!A1048572,MATCH("Company Name",'Sheet Name'!C1048572:C595)-COUNTIF('Sheet Name'!C1048572:C595,"Company Name"),0,COUNTIF('Sheet Name'!C1048572:C595,"Company Name"))

I am using a pivot table in excel 2010. 15 columns (fixed) and plenty of dive downs for rows.
I am trying to 'hide' all of the rows containing values less than 10. If it is easier we can start with hiding values of zero and go from there.
It is key to hide the rows as within the dive downs the rows within the pivot are to many to sort through. If there is a way to do this using the grand total columns for each row that would work as well. Just to be clear I need to hide the entire row not just report the empty cells as zeros. If any further detail is needed feel free to ask.
For example: If value of column O "Grand Total" = 0 'hide rows with value 0' ELSE 'display rows with value greater than 0'

I have a set of four pivot tables on a sheet that I need to programmatically change a Report Filter (Page Field) so I can create sets of reports in an automated fashion. This will be the first step in that process. The change will involve choosing > 1 Role each time the code loops through based on Named Ranges I've defined that are associated with that Role.
My code thus far:
Code:
Sub TestCode()
Dim pt As PivotTable
Dim pf As PivotField
Dim pi As PivotItem
[Code]....
emm_dc_gsr is one of many Named Ranges that will contain a variable number of elements. Just using the one right now to see if I can get the code to work, I'll eventually make another Named Range/Array of all them so I can loop through each Report ("ReportPick").
I want the Report Filter to consult that Named Range for its values and apply those values to PivotField "Role" that is used as a Report Filter.
When running this code above, I get a "Role" Field that says "All" but no values (the table is completely blank), with no evidence as to why it'd be blank (all filters in every Report, Column and Row are working normally and are filled in). When I choose a value manually after the code is run, the pivot table values populate. Do I need to somehow index the Named Range in that loop? I'm just confused about this step right here:
For Each pi In pf.PivotItems
If pi.Value = RolePick Then
pi.Visible = True
Else: pi.Value = False
When I've run other versions of the code, I've gotten an array version of it to "work" using LBound and UBound, but it never chooses the right two values even though those are verified as stored in the array via a pass-through. It chooses the first few values in the Report Filter.
Here's the corresponding code for that:
For i = LBound(myArray) To UBound(myArray)
pf.PivotItems(i).Name = myArray(i, 1).Value
pf.PivotItems(i).Visible = True
Next
I do not care if I use an array or a Named Range. I just want something that is simple and works. Passing the values directly from the named range seems easiest to my brain, but I'm open to anything and I'm clearly missing something (probably silly).
I also have no idea why " .AutoSort xlManual, .SourceName, .EnableMultiplePageItems" is necessary though every piece of sample code I've seen seems to have some variation of it.
(Using Excel 2010, Windows 7.)

My macro is designed to look at a summary source tab and create a new tab for each unique project number. It then creates a pivot table from five different source detail tabs and filters on the project number. If a tab already exists it selects the tab and moves on to the next project number. There are six pivot tables created for every project.
New data is added each month to the source tabs and I have a macro to delete all pivot tables and the macro will recreate the pivot tables when ran again.
Issue: Running out of resources At work I'm limited to the use of Excel 2010 (32bit) so I'm restricted on 2GB of memory. At home I ran the file successfully (64bit) and it was around 3GB of memory.
My macro creates a new pivot cache for every pivot table where as I'm trying to only use 6 pivot caches in my coding. I kill it half way through and it's around 100+ caches causing unnecessary usage of memory.
Fix / Solution:
Correctly code the vba to only create six caches and code the rest the pivot tables to use that cache.The only difference in the Pivot Tables is that it’s sorted on the Project Number.
Code:
Dim VBAPPPC As PivotCache
Dim VBAAPPC As PivotCache
Dim VBAPRPC As PivotCache
Dim VBAEXPC As PivotCache
Dim VBAMJPC As PivotCache
Dim VBAIVPC As PivotCache
Dim VBAPT As PivotTable
[code]...

I am trying to get to grips with the dynamic ranges for pivot tables. I have named a range data and in the refers to section put:
=OFFSET(Sheet2!A1,0,0,COUNTA(Sheet2!A:A),COUNTA(Sheet2!1:1))
I was hoping that then when i go to data > Pivot table and it asks for the range i could put =Data but it tells me that the range is invalid. I have attached a copy at the bottom.

I have a sheet in my workbook called Results. This sheet contains a list of a fixed set of columns (A - N) but with a variable number of rows.
I am trying to create a macro to create a pivot table from this data, which automatically selects all the rows in the Results sheet to form the data set.
I've had a look at some of the other threads on this topic, but just can't get this working.
I have the following code that I have pieced together from other threads - you will see I am trying to set "PivotRange" as the data set and include this as the data source in the pivot. I get a subcript out of range error when I run this.
Dim PivotRange As Range
PivotRange = Range(Worksheets(Results).Cells(1, 1), Cells(lastRow, lastColumn))
Sheets.Add
[Code].....

Because my pivot table is used by several users the data source changes often. In response, I created and applied a dynamic range using the offset formula. While the pivot talbe grabs the correct # of records, it inserts a blank column and row. There are NOT any blank cells in the data source range, as reflected by pivot table counts for the Blank column and Row. Any idea why Blank is showing up in my pivot table and how I can correct while maintaining the dynamic range?

Im trying for the first time to use a dynamic range as the 'source' for a pivot table. The pivot table and the source data are in two different tabs. The source data is on tab Log! and i have used Daves formula (i hope correctly) to define the dynamic range. The range starts at Column B and is 22 columns wide:
Refers to:=OFFSET(Log!$B$1,0,0,MATCH(""*"",Log!$B:$B,-1),22)
I have named this dynamic range DMR. I have a pivot table on another tab. When i try to use DMR as the source (Log!DMR), it gives me an error "Reference is Not Valid". I must have the syntax wrong somewhere.

I have this workbook in which each sheet refers to a month in a specific year (e.g. Jan12, Nov13), plus an "overall" sheet where I would like to, among other stuff, create a button that would lead me to the sheet refering to "today's month".
Although I know how to create a "static" macro that leads me to a particular sheet, I don't know how to create one in which the sheet it refers to is changing every single month.
(Note: I'm using Win7, MSExcel 2010)

I'm trying to create a set of three dynamic/dependent drop down lists of date values, based on a set of imported data. Depending on whether the preferred choice is to list all dates in a range or just dates on the 15th, the available start and end drop down lists will change.
In addition, if possible I would then like to display a list of valid dates (not sure if this needs to be VBA).
The attached sheet shows/explains what I am attempting but here it is as well:
If B3 is set to show all dates in the month then:
the first dropdown option for C3 will be the first date of IMPORT (D2)
the first dropdown option for C4 will be the C3 value, to the last date in IMPORT (D) column
If B3 is set to show 15th of the month then:
the dropdown for C3 will be the first date of IMPORT (D) column with a date of 15th the dropdown for C4 will be in the range of C3 to the last date of IMPORT (D) column with a date of 15th only dates of 15th will be listed in both C3 and C4 dropdownlists
General
the dates in IMPORT column D are taken from IMPORT column A, B & C, which will be imported and will always be date sequential the number of rows of date entries will change with every import but there will never be any blank rows between dates the values in IMPORT columns A, B & C will always be numerical, and can be referenced if required [ideally] the LIST OF DATES will be populated with the date range, based on the option selected in B3
I'm fairly familiar with Excel (2010) and I have also done some VBA but I'm new to dynamic, nested dropdown lists and I'm unsure what the most practical way is to achieve this.

I have some VBA that dumps various sheets data into an SQL Database.
Part of that requires me to sanitize all of the fields before they make it to the DB, (at least to prevent the code from breaking itself w/ errant ' characters.
right now my code is as follows
Code:
If InStr(aa, "'") > 0 Then
aa = Replace(aa, "'", "''")
End If
If InStr(bb, "'") > 0 Then
bb = Replace(bb, "'", "''")
[Code] ......
I was hoping to condense it to something like the following, however it is not working how I hoped / want it to. .. I had found somewhere out there that this Eval() function possibly could be used to 'reference' dynamic variables, however it does not appear to work at all anymore, and even then it may only have worked to 'read' and not 'write' to the variable. (Excel 2010, on Windows 7 64-bit).
Code:
itemsToSanitize = "aa,bb,cc,dd,ee,ff,gg,hh,ii,jj,kk,ll,mm,nn,oo,pp,qq,rr,ss,tt,uu,vv,ww,xx,yy,zz,aaa,bbb,ccc,ddd,eee,fff,ggg,hhh"
ITSArray = Split(itemsToSanitize, ",")
For Each thing In ITSArray
If InStr(Eval(thing), "'") > 0 Then
Eval(thing) = Replace(Eval(thing), "'", "''")
End If

On a worksheet, I created:
- a list of data
- a pivottable based on these data
When moving this worksheet this worksheet to another workbook, the pivot table can't refresh anymore. This throws an error message "Reference is not valid". To work around this problem I need to adapt the datasource. The same occurs if the list and the pivot table are on separate sheet, with the added strange behaviour that, when data an PT are split, it is not possible to move both sheet together.
This would not be a big issue if my problem had to be solved manually. The real problem is that I need to move the sheets from a C# program.

I've got two pivot table reports working off one dataset.
I've named the range Recharge with the formula as below..
=OFFSET('Recharge'!$A$1,0,0,COUNTA('ABC Recharge'!$A:$A),16)
But this uses column A as the longest column... but sometimes it will be column I - how can the formula be adapted ? or can it be ? i've been looking at the Max function and trying to incorporate that but my limited brainpower has gone to mush.

I have a a spreadsheet that pulls user information from our corporate address book. I would then like to copy that data to another worksheet for additional data scrubbing. The problem I am facing is that, I can get the reference to work the first time but if I pull new data down, the destination spreadsheet now shows #REF!
I've tried using the below formulas but they all wind up the same way. ' Results' is the name of the spreadsheet I am making the reference to which has the dynamic data in it.
=Results!#REF!
=INDIRECT("Results!$B3")
=indirect (cell("results",B3)

Ultimate goal is to automatically update the source data for 4 pivot tables that are on 1 worksheet. The data for those 4 pivot tables are on 4 different worksheets w/in the same workbook. Consolidating into one dataset is not an option.
I'm familiar with a dynamic named range, but the 4 worksheets that contain the data are replaced daily via automated Access output which creates an error.
I know how to do this adhoc by matching the pivot table names with their respective worksheets, but there are many other documents with similar layouts where this would beneficial.
Below is an example of how I currently update 3 pivots on separate worksheets w/ the same data range which is w/in the same workbook. My proposed changes are below the current. Any ideas on how to return the workbook name as a string...Or am I going about this the completely wrong way...

I am in the process of setting up some graphs. The graphs will show the last 6 months of data so they move as each month is goes. I saw a slick way of doing this using the count function but this did not quite fulfill my needs. What I was looking for is to be able to input the start month in a cell. The cell would be part of the function within the formula. I created a simplified version of the spreadsheet below.
Spreadsheet.jpg
Then I created my names using the ctrl-F3
Names.jpg
I then created the graph I wanted and wanted to use the formula =SERIES(Sheet1!$B$3,!chtCat,!chtIssuesReported,1). This kept getting an error indicated nothing really. It basically says there is something wrong with my Series function. I have a working version of a similiar worksheet I have been basing my entries on. They look almost identical but mine is failing. I also created a new file and tried this and it still fails. I can run the formula evaluator within Excel 2010 against the !chtCat and !chtIssuesReported names and they both return the correct value (which equals areas on the spreadsheet). I have also tried to enter the spreadsheet name and a tab in front of the names to get them to work and still get an error. Basicall I am trying to create the graph below (this grpah is using the hard coded locations)

I'm trying to dynamically populate ranges to facilitate dynamic charts being generated.
I use excel 2010 at work, and 2011 for mac at home.
Dynamic chart ranges populated from named ranges as selected in nested indirectly sourced validation lists
I want any selection made in a dependent validation list which contains a list of named ranges to trigger a worksheet_change event which copies the range the selection points to and pastes it into a dynamic range in another column, beginning as a specified cell.I've tried using this, put together from some code examples from similar, but different issues.
Code:
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
If Not Intersect(Target, Me.Range("B2")) Is Nothing Then
Range(Range("B2").Value).Copy
Range("P2").Paste
End If
End Sub
Trouble is, I don't really understand this code. It doesn't appear to do anything when I make a worksheet change in "B2", but I don't know exactly what it is. I suspect that perhaps the fact that "B2" is validated from an indirect source might be difficult?

I had a workbook in Excel 2003 that i just moved to 2010. In the 2003 file I had 2 pivot tables, one each on a worksheet, looking at the same data, just grouped differently. One yearly, one quarterly.
Now in the 2010 workbook whenever I change the grouping on pivot table, the other one changes also. It's like they are linked together or something.

Using Excel 2010
I have a workbook with multiple sheets.Sheet1 is named "UPC" and is a giant database for my workbook containing 80,000+ rows and 12 columns.
Sheet2 is named "Scan" and uses a bunch of index-match formulas. Basically, you scan a barcode and it auto-populates across the row all the information it pulls with that particular UPC from the "UPC" sheet. One of my columns, "QTY Scanned", in the "UPC" sheet has a countif formula to keep track of how many times that item was scanned on the "Scan" sheet.
Sheet3 is named "PSlip" and has a big button on it that you press and multiple macros go into overdrive. First macro takes all the rows from "UPC" with a quantity greater than 0 in the "QTY Scanned" column and copies it to the "PSlip" sheet.
Second macro takes that data and makes a pivot table.This is all clothing, pants, shirts, jackets, etc...When my pivot table is created, my Column Label is Size. When the pivot table is created, it automatically sorts it in ascending order, so it goes from numbers to letters.
This is great for pants because the size is in reference to a waist size; 24,25,26,27, etc...
HOWEVER, shirts, jackets, and other tops are not in a numeric size: they are in a Text format. XS, S, M, L, etc...
Sometimes we only scan pants for an order, sometimes only tops, sometimes both.
Is there a way for the pivot table to recognize when tops are in included and automatically sort the sizes?
I still want the numeric values at the beginning, but once the text starts it automatically sorts in this order:
XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, MT, LT, XLT, XXLT, 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X
