Excel Command Line Switch For (Read Only) Shortcut Not Working

Jul 31, 2014

I've recently created a macro which takes a .csv file and scrubs the data and dresses it up for a report. I've finally got it running without any problems and have added it individually to 5 different user accounts on my network as an add-in, but need a way to share it across a computer network without allowing others to edit the file.

The report is generated multiple times a day by the different users, none of whom are very computer literate (not that I am much better, myself), and the macro over-writes the old file each time. I've read that it's possible to simply create a shortcut to the file that automatically opens the spreadsheet in read-only format, which would be perfect for what I'm trying to do, but I haven't been able to get it to work so far.

My current shortcut pathway is similar to this:

"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice15EXCEL.EXE" /R "C:UsersBenDocumentsOT Master.xlsx"

On my computer at work (Windows 7) the shortcut simply opens the spreadsheet so that anyone can edit it, instead of as a read-only file. On my computer at home (I'm trying to experiment) (windows 8.1) it won't even let me save the shortcut, saying I need to provide administrator permission & then cutting to a window that says "access denied".

I won't have the pathway for the actual file I'm trying to create a shortcut for until tomorrow when I get back to work, but I've formatted it essentially the same, directing to the excel.exe file, running the switch "/R", and then directing it to the actual file location.

The ultimate goal is to have multiple people be able to view the file without locking out those who need to update it.

7-zip Command Line Via Excel?

Feb 10, 2012

I've got an Excel file that uses 7-zip. It can execute a command line that will use 7-zip to go to a folder and zip each of the folder's files into its own zip file, placing the zips in a single, specified destination folder. I can specify whether to look in the source folder, or to also look in all of the source folder's subdirectories.

Question is, how do I tell 7-zip to just zip ONE file, and how do I tell 7-zip to zip a SPECIFIC LIST of files that I name (instead of looking through a whole folder)? how to use command line...

Code:
Sub a_zip_with_sub_directories()
Shell "cmd /c for /r ""C:Users aiDocumentsmonthly reportsFinal Copies of Monthly Reports"" %i in (*.*) do ""%ProgramFiles%7-Zip7za.exe"" a -tzip ""C:DATA aiipped\%~ni"" ""%i"""
End Sub
Sub a_zip_no_sub_directories()
Shell "cmd /c for %i in (""C:Users aiDocumentsmonthly reportsFinal Copies of Monthly Reports*.*"") do ""%ProgramFiles%7-Zip7za.exe"" a -tzip ""C:DATA aiipped\%~ni"" ""%i"""
End Sub

Read Pdf Or Doc File Line By Line And Then Parse Data Into Proper Cells And Rows?

Feb 23, 2013

I have the data to import / read in a pdf, in a doc, or in an Excel worksheet whichever is easier to use. I need to import the data, parse it into the correct cells for that row and then repeat the import until the end of the file. Not all the cells are in each group of data to import, so those cells will be null for that row. Some of the data for one cell may be in up to 14 lines in the data file. I have be concatenating these data rows into one cell. There are 48,000 lines in the file to import or I would do this manually. I am assuming that doing this in VBA would be the most efficient method.

Read Range Of Data Line By Line Which Is Increasing Dynamically

Aug 20, 2014

I need to read or clear all the line in specific range which will be increasing dynamically. Problem is "Selected File List" table range is not specified. New file chosen with browse will be added to "Selected File List" dynamically. Number of file can't be predicted.

vbaStk.JPG

What I've tried so far is, keep track of the browse button click and add the file path to arraylist. After that, (Row number 9 which is start line + arraylist size) to get the number of line of end of the table. But due to some requirement, I want to read the file from excel file. Something like -Read until found blank line or border bottom or something.

I'm new to VBA and I'm not so sure what I'm doing with vba codes

Excel 2010 :: Command Button In Shared Workbook Not Working?

Sep 7, 2010

I am using Excel 2010. I am using a shared workbook that was originally created in Excel 2003. This workbook has a command button that is supposed to be clicked to open a userform. However, I cannot even click on the button when opening the shared form in Excel 2010. When the form is not shared, the button works fine.

I have no problems with the button when opening the shared form in 2003 or 2007.

Is there anything I can do to make the command button work while the form is shared and while using Excel 2010?

Excel 2003 :: Border Line Styles Not Working

May 20, 2012

(Excel 2003, using Format/Cells)

I have selected a range of multiple rows and columns. I can change the alignment, cell color, where border lines appear, and the color of border lines.

However, I can not change the border line style. No matter what style I select, when drawn on the sheet it apppear as a thin solid line. I've tried all the dashed/dotted line options, but they appear to have no effect.

Ultimately, I want to color alternating rows of cells, and (since coloring hides grid lines) I want to add border lines the same color and style as the hidden grid lines.

Command To Read Words Not Capitalization

Jul 25, 2006

I've noticed that when one pick up a value (word) from a cell in excel and try to use it in a form that it needs to be exactly the same (e.g. if a letter is capitalized in the cell, and not in the form, it wont be recognized as the same). So i was wondering if there is a command that one can type so that the form doesn not read the word for its capitalization but for the letter in it.

Read A Date Rather Than A Line VBA Macro

Sep 30, 2009

I have the following code which reads line 54 (row 54) in a spreadsheet and calculates the following using data in subsequent columns. Sometimes the data I need isn't always in row 54, I would rather have the macro read the data in Column A[AB] that is on line 54...sometimes on 53.

The date is Sep-09. How can I make it read this rather than AB54. I think I just need changes @ the top (ie Dim rng as Range, Set rng = [AB54]).

Sub Profile_info2()
Dim rng As Range
Set rng = [AB54]
rng.FormulaR1C1 = "=RC[-12]+R[-1]C[-12]+R[-2]C[-12]"
With rng.Offset(0, 2)
.FormulaR1C1 = "=((RC[-28]+R[-1]C[-28]+R[-2]C[-28])*4)/((RC[-25]+R[-1]C[-25]+R[-2]C[-25])/3)"
.NumberFormat = "0.0"
End With
With rng.Offset(0, 3)
.FormulaR1C1 = _
"=((RC[-15]-RC[-29])+(R[-1]C[-15]-R[-1]C[-29])+(R[-2]C[-15]-R[-2]C[-29]))/(RC[-15]+R[-1]C[-15]+R[-2]C[-15])"
.Style = "Percent"
.NumberFormat = "0.0%"
End With
rng.Offset(0, 4).FormulaR1C1 = "=RC[-8]"
With rng.Offset(0, 5)
.FormulaR1C1 = "=(((RC[-17]-RC[-31])+(R[-1]C[-17]-R[-1]C[-31])+(R[-2]C[-17]-R[-2]C[-31]))*4)/((RC[-28]+R[-1]C[-28]+R[-2]C[-28])/3)"

Read Each Line Of Text File

Oct 26, 2006

I'm using the following code to read a text file that I downloaded from a mainframe file.

Do While Not EOF(FileNum)
Line Input #FileNum, myLine
Debug.Print myLine
Loop

It reads and prints the first line, but then drops out of the loop. According to the help file, "Line Input" is looking for a carriage return (Chr(13)) or carriage return–linefeed (Chr(13) + Chr(10)) sequence. I have pasted a sample of the text file below. I'm not sure what the characters are at the beginning of each line, but perhaps I could find a way to replace each of them with a carriage return.

Inserting String Variable Into VBA Command Line

Oct 8, 2012

I have a userform with a numerous textboxes, which I have labeled with similar text and a unique number at the end (num1_txt, num2_txt, num3_txt, etc.). I am trying to create a for loop that sequentially references the numbers of the text boxes and pulls the user-entered value in the text boxes into an Excel document.

Here is the code I have so far...

VB:
i = 1
For i = 1 To 18
Dim cyltrack As String
cyltrack = "Me.cyltrack" & i & "_txt.Text"
If Me.cyltrack.Value = "" Then
Cells((cellcount + i), 13).Value = "*"
Else
Cells((cellcount + i), 13).Value = cyltrack
End If
Next i

I am running into problems in trying to convert the string variable, cyltrack, into hard code that I could insert into Me.cyltrack.Value.

Vb Code Freezing At Line Input Command

Feb 26, 2007

I have created an AddIn for a project I'm working on using the 'Open' command in Excel Vb. While this worked perfectly for the file I was testing it on (1,740,754 bytes) it doesn't work on a new file (121,445,125 bytes).

On testing the code, one line at a time, it gets stuck on

Line Input #1, DataLine

The files only contain one line so I suspect there is too much data for the command to handle.

Is there an alternative?

How can I switch from one Workbook to another?

I found no "open document" menu where all currently opened excel documents are listed.

The only way I found so far is by clicking on another preview in Win 7 Taskbar.

But I guess there must be a way INSIDE Excel as well.

Prefill Cells With Command Line Switches From A Browser

Jan 28, 2014

I'm looking to have an excell file shared on a windows network to a simple LAN (samba sharing), and then for a user to be able to click on a HTML link that will launch that excell pile, and to have it populate specific and predeterminined cells with information that will be handed to it by the HTML link from the website.

Think of a CRM web app that href is a link like: "LAN1Filesexcellbook01.xls?Mrs%20Wendy%20Jones?4%20Skin%20Street"

From something like that I would like to launch excell and have Mrs Jones' details populate into the predefined excell sheet. The HTML website can dynamically populate a HTML link depending on the customer being viewed.

So I'd like to know how two things

1) How to launch a network file in this way, while correctly handing it parameters or switched that it will be able to later:
2) Collect that information and distribute it into the cells I choose in VBA.

I'm familiar with Visual Basic .Net primarily, and have a small amount of VBA experience.

We would like to continue to use Google chrome if possible...

Switch Statement Is Too Long For VBA. To Make The Switch Statement Work Over Two Lines

Jan 6, 2009

I have created a very long switch statement, which is too long to be placed in one row in VBA. I have attempted to put a space and underscore at the end of one line and continue the statement on the row below by placing a comma at the start of the second line. VBA will accept my efforts, but when I run the statement in the immediate window, the following error appears.

"Invalid procedure call or argument"

I understand that there are certain rules where I can split a switch statement onto two lines, yet I do not know what they may be.

Command Button And List Box Working Together

Jul 9, 2008

I have made a list box and can see the data in it and make multiple choices. What I need to know how to do is put a small button and make the list box appear and make the selected choices, then hide the list box but the button visiable. I would to have check boxes and a scroll bar in the list box by the names but i am stumped. If you could show the code that will make this work that will be great!!! lets say cell B3 to B6 shows cat, dog, mouse, bird. I would check the box and choose cat and bird and have only these 2 show up in the cell B2 separated by a comma. So each line for about 100 lines down will need to have the same choices made but with equipment names, people ect. or is there something better that will work. I run Excel 2003 and windows xp.

Selection Command Working Variably

Sep 21, 2006

Some very basic

Cells(293, 1).Select

Nothing complicated at all in that. Yet if I put it in the code for a particular Excel sheet, it doesn't always work.

Same with

Range("A293").Select

(Yet wierdly, to confuse matters, very occasionally it does work)

If I put exactly the same code in Procedure 1 in Module 1 and call Procedure 1, I never get an error, and the code executes absolutely fine.

But I have to keep setting up procedures and referencing them for, quite frankly, code which should work no problem.
