May 23, 2006I am having trouble getting my IF statement to test if the cell contains the text "sale" return "X" if not "Y". I need it to search through the text string in that cell and find a certain word, and if it finds that word, retrn a value. I am really having difficulty with is what symbol or function do I use for the logical test? (i.e. =, <>, MATCH, INDEX?)

Mar 31, 2014 I am trying to do a sort of index match thing using VBA. What I am attempting to do is to use the prefix of a long number and try to find that exact prefix in a string array, and output that string array value. So this is what I have so far as a test:

So I can match the text exactly so if I put PREFIXB in cell A1 in this example, i will get the msg box saying "YES", but if I make it PREFIXB1231k4j3jj1kj32cj, it will display "NO". I want to get it so that PREFIXB will be displayed in the cell that I put the formula in. So if A1 = "PREFIX1AAA100CF" and cell B1 = "=ABC(A1)", cell B1 will display "PREFIX1AAA".
Now the thing is that these prefixes can have different lengths, but will never encompass the exact prefix of another. So if I had a prefix of: PRE1AB, I won't have a prefix of PRE1A.
Filter By String Criteria
Jul 11, 2007What i need to do is basically delete every row in my spreadsheet that contains the criteria "L-0.###" in said column. by ### i am referring to 3 decimals, such as:
L-0.250
L-0.000
L-0.555
and so on. you get the idea.
with the below program i got it working so i can type in:
L-0.***
and have it sort out everything proceeding L-0. ...problem is i need to keep the data such as this:
L-0.53
L-0.00
L-0.0
or basically everything not 3 decimals in with a head of L-0.

VBA / Using String From Input Box As Criteria For CountIF

A simplified version of the code I am using is:

Criteria To Match Part Of String
Dec 3, 2008I have a worksheet that I need to filter on 8 columns. I need to do this in the form (Col A = Bob OR SAM) AND (Col B = Apple OR Pear OR Banana) AND... etc for 8 columns.
I started this thread and we reached the conclusion that I needed either a macro to list out all the possible combinations on separate lines, or a complex criteria formula.
I'm trying to put together the complex criteria, but I am further stumped by the fact that some of the columns contain multiple terms with comma delimiters, so I'm trying to match part of a string, rather than a whole string, so the usual = ISNUMBER(MATCH(Sheet1!A2,Sheet2!$A:$A,0)) won't work. I tried using =ISNUMBER(FIND(Sheet2!$A:$A,Sheet1!A2)) instead, but I think this fails because it should be an array formula. I tried normal entering and CSE entering, and neither work, so I think this is a dead end.
CountIfs Formula Where One Criteria Is String Within Cell

Attached file 140509 String Criteria.xlsx file has database of three fields (Date, Route number and Part number)
I need the formula that totals number of rows meeting three criteria:
(a) A specific date from Col A
(b) A specific number from Col B
And the part I can't sort out:
(c) Any cell containing a "string" in Col C (so needs to count the "core" even if it has a prefix or suffix).
E.g. How many rows have "Date x" in Col A, "Route Y" in Col B and a cell containing "123" in Col C?

IF Text String Equals Certain Criteria Then Specified Calculation
Jul 9, 2009I have 5 cells with drop down validation lists for the different types of window that we offer. From this list I will select the options and then input some dimensions in cell dimension fields. I then have a cell that gathers the text string from the 5 drop down cells.
My aim is to be able to calculate glass sizes from the text string and the dimensions. Each of the possible text strings will require different calculations and will define the sizes that I need to order. I know the equations that I will need for each of the options but cannot think of how to make them dependable on the text string cell.
I am looking for some way of using IF function to say if the text string returns as certain text then there is a certain calculation to calculate from the dimensions for the glass sizes that I need. I dont know if I've explained it too well nor even if its possible but if it is possible I will find a way as I have done some pretty exceiting things with excel in the past.
Multiple Criteria Search In Text String?
Sep 24, 2013I have 2 columns ,A and B, in a table and text strings in C. Each table row A1 and B1 needs to be compared and matched with the text string C:C. Only if both, A1 and B1, are found in the same string, say C5, it has to return A1&B1. If not, return "Not Found".
Several Obsticles:
1. A and B are text and number
2. C is text with different numbers saved as text and words all mixed up
3. There is no defined format for the text, it is different in each string

Finding Text That Matches Format Criteria In String?
Oct 3, 2011I'm trying to restructure a list of files at work into a format that makes some sort of sense and can be filtered into useful information.
Part of what I need to do, is match up all the drawing numbers that a certain project references. The numbers are formatted like "####A##" ex. 1234A01,1234A02,5678A01, etc. The cells that I need to extract drawing numbers from contain some description or other text (not just the drawing number) so I need to extract the drawing number from that cells value. (Ex. I need to get the drawing number 1234A01 from a cell whose value is "blah blah 1234A01 blah blah blah")
I was thinking I could just search the string for "####A##" but I'm not really sure how....I tried instr, but I think its searching for the literal value of "####A##" rather than treating the # characters as wildcards...
I tried:

Jan 31, 2008I would like to call up a find box, then be able to search several worksheets for a string, to copy and paste the related row to a new worksheet.
I've gotten as far as being able to search for a string and get the row pasted, as long as the string is defined in my macro. Is there a way though to be able to call up a find box first though, and search for the input variable? (alternatively, I can only imagine a separate piece of code for each variable, of which there are many, and I am actually trying to save time.

Is there a way to add a condition or check to the following line?

Nov 12, 2013I understand that the function FIND(find_text, within_text, start_num) will find the first occurrence of a stated string. And by adjusting the start_num, you can skip a set number of characters before the search begins.
But, is there a way to find the Last occurrence of said string? In my case the find_text string may occur multiple times in the variable length within_text cell to be searched.
Sample: Find the last occurrence of MDU

how the MID formulas work (as a bonus)? I used =MID(A1,FIND(")",A1,1)+2,45) and it returns "10.50% 12/13/2014".
So I see that that formula says start from 1 character after ")", count 2 over, and then put in the next 45 characters. How do I do an in between amount, and how do I just have it come from the LEFT but stop when it finds " ("
