I want to be able to create a column that finds all the matching cities from A in B.
I want to count the number of times partial text strings occur in a cell adjacent to another cell containing specific text.

I'm looking for the number of times "FB" and "Milton" occur in Column A when "PHOTO" also appears in Column B in the same row. From numerous searches I've tried figuring out VLOOKUP, DCOUNTA, etc.

But it's work only 100% match word not by partial text.
I'm trying to restructure a list of files at work into a format that makes some sort of sense and can be filtered into useful information.
Part of what I need to do, is match up all the drawing numbers that a certain project references. The numbers are formatted like "####A##" ex. 1234A01,1234A02,5678A01, etc. The cells that I need to extract drawing numbers from contain some description or other text (not just the drawing number) so I need to extract the drawing number from that cells value. (Ex. I need to get the drawing number 1234A01 from a cell whose value is "blah blah 1234A01 blah blah blah")
I was thinking I could just search the string for "####A##" but I'm not really sure how....I tried instr, but I think its searching for the literal value of "####A##" rather than treating the # characters as wildcards...

This is for Excel 2007,I have two sets of model numbers. One set is the full model numbers of the units we use, and the other is an abbreviated form used to lookup up certificate numbers. I need a way to match these up so I can use one set of search criteria to find out if there is a match. Here is an example of what I need to match with a partial text match:
H,AE35(6,9)36+TD and AE3563636D145C2501AP
H,RE36(6,9)36 and RE36936C145B2505AP
if I could do this with a formula that matches multiple items at the same time (ie; if A & B & C match=true) with the above model number being one of those items (certificate numbers are issued for sets, but the other model numbers are fine).If that's not possible, a one time VBA run to match all of the abbreviations at once would also work. If these items are matched up with a one time VBA, the VBA needs to account for their being more than one match for each abbreviation depending on the size of the unit.
So H,AE35(6,9)36+TD could be matched to:
AE3563636D145C2501AP
AE3563636D175C2501AP
AE3563636D210C2501AP
I have a questions regarding extracting records using a partial text search in multiple columns.
I would like to do a partial text search of the letter "j" in the Name column, and search for the number "1" in the Phone column and extract the corresponding records.

I am working on large sets of data (more than 50,000 rows of data). I have two sets of data. Set 1 and Set 2 (master data) on the same worksheet. Both the sets of data have three columns each. I am using EXCEL 2007. I was able to accomplish step 1 below.. but I am totally lost with step 2 since i have an additional criteria for the "year".
I have attached the excel sheet as well. This is what I am trying to accomplish:
1) I want to find exact matches in set 1 and set 2 and highlight it or do something to show that a match was found. The challenge is the data in set 1 can occur anywhere in set 2.
2) Add to the complication .. my criteria for matching the year is different. If the Set 1 "year" is equal to or greater by 1 yr or greater by 2 yr when compared to Set 2 "year", I want to treat it as a "match".
For example, from the data attached:
Set 1 data in row 4 is: ATLANTIC ABSECON 2004
Set 2 data in row 3 is: ATLANTIC ABSECON 2003
I want to treat these two data as "MATCH" since ATLANTIC matches ATLANTIC, ABSECON matches ABSECON and according to one of my criteria for year, Set 1 "year" is greater by 1 yr than the Set 2 "year".
I have two columns, some of the cells in these columns contain more than one value separated by a space. Example:

What I am trying to achieve is to test that the values in column A match those in column B and have a TRUE/FALSE response in column C. At present i'm just using =a=b, however I want the formula to give me a TRUE response for the third and fourth lines in my example, as I want it to ignore the zero after the decimal place, at present it gives me FALSE.
So the results I want to see in col C for the above example are:

I have 2 strings, news1 and news2, i need to use the like function to check the occurance of these two strings in all the cells, and just for testing purpose, im printing 'test' it out in another excel sheet.
How do i make that work? the commented line shows what exactly i want, only that i dont want to hard code the string values.

how do i split it so as to assign two variables to have 'new' and 'polygon'.
I have a table with three columns, column 1 is a list of names, column 2 is where I want my result to appear, and column 3 has my array of search values. Column 1 and 2 could have any number of rows with values, but column 3 will have less values. It looks like this if it's working right:

What I am trying to do is for each cell in column 1, I want to see if there is a matching value in column 3 - it has to be either an exact match or a partial match (i.e. the string appears somewhere in the values of column 1).
I have been trying to use MATCH like this:
=ISNUMBER(MATCH($A2,$C:$C,0))
but it does not return true unless the match is exact.

I have a column with text + string (e.g., T1000, T1001, etc.)
I have another column that's the same, but sometimes this column has new codes.
Right now I have to "eye" it side by side to see if there are any new codes, but I'm sure there's a better way to do it. I'm thinking of asking Excel to compare the columns and if they aren't equal, then it would be necessary for me to eye it. If they are equal, then I dont have to bother because there are no new codes.
What's the best way to look at two sets of data in excel and make comparisons between them. For instance how many matches (and what are the matches). Workbook attached as an example.

I have two sheets that need to have unique partial matches aligned side by side. My first sheet is my database. The righter most column of this sheet contains a unique combination of letters and numbers.
My second sheet contains a single column which I export each month from our CMS and is a list of URLs. Within each of these URLs appears the unique set of letters and numbers from sheet 1 (and only appears once).
There are about thrice as many URLs in sheet 2 as there are entries in my sheet 1 database.
Ideally, I would like the URL from sheet 2 that contains the unique combination from sheet 1 to be pasted in the cell immediately to the right of the given unique combination.
However, I will settle for a list of trues and falses next to the URLs in sheet two that I can erase the falses, sort and paste next to the sorted list from sheet 1.
I have worked on the code – with as limited knowledge as I possess – to perhaps communicate my intention. I know for a fact that in the code below there are 2 problematic lines – and herein lies the root of my problem. The first line is: “Dim Day As String” In Debugger speak, I am told that this cannot be done along with “Set sh = Worksheets(Day.Value)”. However, in normal speak, I am trying to copy data from one sheet to another. When pasting the data on the second sheet, I am trying to make the code find the appropriate sheet that matches a Day value in Cell I5. Getting the code to execute this one action is proving to be particularly difficult. I am thankful for any suggestion on how to get the code to work correctly.

table array to the lookup value. I know that excel requires the formats to
be exactly the same and I can force the match if I copy the lookup value from
my table array and paste it into the worksheet. Is there an easy way to

This formula allows me to find the lowest value in column U where column N contains the text "NO".

I want to add another condition so that the formula only returns the lowest value in column U where (i) column N contains the text "NO" and also (ii) column F contains the text "YES".
Sheet 2 in the attached sample workbook (without all the pre-existing formula's from the original) contains data that I paste in (Cols A to D).
Sheet 1 then searches that data (minus Col D) from Sheet 2 and returns "Yes" to Col I if matching data is found.
What I would like to do now is if Sheet 1 returns "Yes" then the corresponding value from Sheet 2 would be returned to Sheet 1 Col J.
So in this example the value "5" would be returned to Sheet 1 Cell J1
I already have all the formulas in place to find the matches and return "Yes", this is just to return the additional information from Col D Sheet 2 to Sheet 1 Col J..
Cell H1 has a variable string of references for eg

I want to return the reference beginiing with "FXVA" so it would ignore the rest and only return FXVB123456 - this should always be 10 characters.
Just to add another complication to the mix, there may be 2 "FXVA" references in the string and i want to get both (these can be in the same string so FXVB123456FXEL123456 - but this might not happen regularly.

Is there a way to do a COUNTIF on just partial text?
I know how to count how many cells in a column contain the text "cars" for example, but how would i write a formula that include cells with other text as well?
For example if 55 cells have "cars" as a value and 20 cells have "fast cars" as a value
I would want the formula to count 75.
Basically, it needs to count how many cells cars appears in, in a specific column, regardless of whether its alone in the cell or part of a sentence.
I am looking for a lookup to look for text within Column A that matches text in column D and brings the word in that is in column E ...

I am copying text (contest results from another website) and posting into excel. As it is formatted on the original site, it posts the place, followed by a period, then the team name, then a dash, then the score.

To place it in our database we need the period removed from the place, and the dash and score removed.

Is this possible to automate in excel or is there a way to format so that excel seperates the place, team name and score? Or should I be looking for a different method?
I have about 100 text files from which I need to import specific sets of numbers into excel. The part in the file looks like this

I need to import the numbers in the 1st row but they need to be transposed. and than of cause I need to do that for the other 99 files I have.
I have VBA code that imports a text file using a fixed width separator within the code. The code is working just as I need it to work and placing the information/data in the columns that I have specified in the code.
The issue I have is I only want to import certain data that is contained within the text file. It is going to be a little hard to explain, so I have attached a sample of the text file with dummy data to better explain. The file is broken up into different segments. Each segment is identified by a “Base Number” in column A of the text file (once it has been converted into an Excel file).
For my example, I only want to import data for Base Number 38451. The information for this segment is easy enough to identify when the data starts and when the data ends. As in this example, the first occurrence of 38451 begins at row 257. Once the first instance of this number is identified, the first row of data that I require is always two rows after.
I think the coding should go something like this, but I just can’t figure out how to put it into my

I have included two files. (1) the text file with the data (2) the Excel file. There are two tabs in the Excel file “ReconSheet” (contains the data that is imported from the text file) and “Desired Result” (this is how I want the end product to look).

I have a long list of categories in the column A (seen below). To this list i want to assign keys that will support with further calculations (in a column B).
An example of such a key would be in the case of the given example "ACTION SPORTS" and "FOOTBALL". The whole list of these "keys" hast 17 elements.
It is evident that i will need some kind of a partial match. The one i have found on the internet, limittin itself just on the first or last number of characters wont work.
Would it be possible to select my "key - list" (all 17 of them). Then excel would asign a key, whenver it would find a partial match, matching the key?
