Formula That Ranks Dynamic Unsorted Data

Aug 18, 2014

The situation requires some context. I have a spreadsheet that is pulling data in from another location. It is simply a 'Location!A1' link - the source data updates daily as it is a Business Objects report that I dump out and I want to then bring that info into another spreadsheet.

My challenge is attempting to order the data as it comes in without having to manually sort the Business Objects report everyday. Because the link to the BO report is simply a cell look up, I have to take the data as it comes.

I've tried the rank formula according to a price (as this is what it needs to be ranked by) but because some products are the same price as each other, it simply doubles up (so if there's two products at $10, it ranks them both the same e.g. 4). Once I get the right rank, I can then vlookup the right order in a way I can then reference properly. EXAMPLE 180814.xlsx

Formula - (-) Shows Up And Ranks This As The Number One

Mar 16, 2007

On cell K7, i have this formula:

=IF(ISERROR(I7-J7),"",I7-J7)

On cell L7 i have this formula:

=IF(ISERROR(RANK(K7,$K$7:$K$29,0)),"",(RANK(K7,$K$7:$K$29,0)))

The issue is that in cell K7 a dash (-) shows up and ranks this as the number one, even when i have no data in I7 and J7.

Spreadsheet Data Becomes Unsorted

May 27, 2009

I have been putting together a database of town owned properties. I have about 190 rows with well over 20 columns. Sometimes I need to sort the data in order to find something. However sometimes after sorting the data and not thinking of anything of it, I will open up the file later that day or the next day and I find that most of, or sections of my data are all jumbled up. I then have to re-enter the data to get it to where it should be. I am using Excel 2003.

Closest Match: Unsorted Data

Oct 26, 2006

problem is the data I receive does not always have the same time stamps

21:59:50
22:00:05
22:00:20

next time maybe

21:59:55
22:00:00
22:00:05

What I was doing originially in my userform was allowing form the user to input the starting time (without having to know the exact time) example 22:00. This works but the problem is when they enter the approximate end time 3:00. Without sorting the data how do I get the ending time to match the approximate time if the time doesn't exist in the data. I was using the Match function and the defined data range with 1 (i.e. Match(value, range, 0)). This works for the starting time but not the stop time since the data is not in ascending order.

Complicated Data Lookups / Ranks

May 3, 2013

I am building a dashboard for a project, which is going to be on a separate worksheet for easy printing and providing only needed data from my database. I have attached a small example in the format I will actually be using as I think the formula is going to be specific to my dashboard.

Attached file, you should see a column "Rank" highlighted orange, with certain rows being numbered. My objective is to display certain data from that particular row, and display it (scroll to the right to see the dashboard display layout) on the dashboard. I think my main goal is to have the specified data displayed in ranked order 1-10 from the top down, and I don't know where to start with that....the other possiblity is to just have the specified data display in ascending order of the zip codes as long as something other than <blank> is in the "Rank" field.

I have written a previous thread which was similar, but misleading, i feel this thread is more to the point.

Currently i use this code, but it only finds the closest highest value if the data is sorted in ascending order.

Ranking With VBA - No Gaps Between Ranks

Feb 7, 2014

I have a problem ranking a large dataset(more than 30000 rows, 16 different columns need to be ranked). My problem is that I dont want the ranks to have gaps when there are ties.

See how it should be in table below.

Ext P$
Rank
Should be
2,128.34
1
1

[Code]...

I do have a working solution with an array formula similar to this, but it slows down my macro (30 minutes instead of 10 seconds) as I need it to calculate 16 times

Code:

=SUM(1/COUNTIF(A$2:A$35000;A$2:A$35000)*(A$2:A$35000>A2))+1

I was thinking of using a for next loop to rank sorted columns but I dont know how to set it up properly.

Unique Ranks Function

May 10, 2007

I have a list of data where some of the cell values are the same. I want to rank them uniquely but when I use the RANK function the cell values that are the same are given the equivalent rank. Is there any way of assigning the equivalent values a sequential ranking that is unique?

So in this example rather than producing the rank as this:

100 1
99 2
98 3
98 3
98 3
97 4
96 5
95 6

It would produce it as this:

100 1
99 2
98 3
98 4
98 5
97 6
96 7
95 8

VBA Populating Combobox From Unsorted List?

Jan 26, 2014

I have built a Userform that is for a Liquor Inventory. I would like to scan each bottle's UPC Code and pull it from a range list that is set up in (Combobox "UpcBarCodeBox"). That information is stored on a sheet "Liquor & Wine Inventory" in Column "A" (Unsorted). Column "B" is the name of the liquor which is also the column that everything is sorted in alphabetical order. What I would like to do is populate several textbox's that I have set up so that I can input missing data or data that needs to be updated. The problem is I would LOVE to keep the list sorted by Liquor Names (Column "B") and not by UPC Bar Codes (Column "A"). From my research I have found that Index and Match might be the way to go but I can't seem to get it to work right. Since I am still learning VBA, Some things still escape my grasp.

VB:

Private Sub UserForm_Initialize()
Me.UpcBarCodeBox.List = Worksheets("Liquor & Wine Inventory").Range("A5:A205").Value
With ComboBox2

Rankif Returning Sequential Ranks

Oct 18, 2011

Here is an example of my data and desired results:

A B C
[Material] [Receipt Date] [Order Received (Desired Results)]
1 8/1/11 1
1 8/1/11 1
1 9/1/11 2
2 8/2/11 1
2 8/5/11 2
2 8/5/11 2
2 9/1/11 3

I would like to identify the order in which each "material" was received but I would like the ranks to be sequential.

I am aware of the:
=SUMPRODUCT(--($A$2:$A$8=$A2),--(E2>E$2:E$8))+1
to return the rank but I would like to make them sequential...

One last request... I would LIKE to not use array functions if possible, however I will if I have to..

Dynamic Data Validation :: Dynamic Lists

Jun 24, 2009

I have a question on the above but can't seem to find a solution. There are two ways that I can find for dealing with dynamic lists via data validation:-

1) Offset and match, cavet being the data must be sorted a-z
2) Have lists for each potential selection

Is there any way to get around 1 without having to do 2? E.g. Got two columns of data, unsorted, and a list from which the user can choose from. The user chooses from the list in first cell, in the second cell require the dynamic list to return all the values accordingly?

Create Dynamic Formula In VBA?

Range("L7").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = _

But - this is now the formula stored in the macro. So everytime I run the macro I get this exact same formula, not the new formula I created with the previous action. How can I get this new formula to show in the macro, or just have the macro convert the text in the cell into a formula by deleting the " ' " charcter on the front?

How To Create A 'dynamic' Formula

Apr 22, 2006

I have a large spreadsheet file with numerous worksheets.
Each sheet represents one month of the year and is named Jan05, Feb05, Mar05
etc.

In the "Summary" sheet I want to automatically reference a range in the
other sheets.

For example:

In the Summary sheet column A, I have the sheet names:
Jan05
Feb05
Mar05
etc.

In column B, (let's use B5 as an example) I want a formula that reads
something like:
=B4 + Apr05!C7

This seems simple enough, but how can I write a formula that 'automatically'
enters the sheet name (i.e. "Apr05") in the formula?

The row containing the data for Apr05 is only created when that month comes
along, in order to keep the file size as small as possible at any time.

Creating Dynamic List Of Data From Expanding Table Of Data?

Feb 13, 2013

I need to create a dynamic list from a table of data.

I have performance data for 110 different pumps. Data points are generated every hour, and the table is updated with new data periodically. I want to automate the population of a list of 6 different pumps, and specify the date range populated. To put it another way: I want to place data from Pumps 1 through 6 for all of November into Columns A through F. Then I want to clear that data, and show data for Pumps 105-110 for last week in those same Columns.

One of the main goals of doing this -- other than quickly narrowing a field of data -- is being able to quickly chart this data on a scatter plot with a custom format. The pumps are grouped together by region, and individual pumps have specific purposes. So I need to quickly generate graphs with a series' color scheme or formatting that is consistent and logical between different pumping regions.

I haven't been able to make pivot table work because of the graphing issue, and also because of the way it handles data points and presents data. I would like to make this work with excel functions and maybe some filtering, but I'm not opposed to figuring out a VB script if you think that's what I should use.
