How To Change Default Worksheet Number Format
Nov 26, 2012
I have a large project with many worksheets. Somehow I managed to change the default number format for new worksheets to Time. So... when I create a new worksheet and paste stuff into it I get everything in AM/PM. How can I change the default number format to Number?

i am trying to change the date format for the B column.
if you look the format for this column is dd/mm/yyyy, BUT, it is not. the real format should be mm/dd/yyyy.
ex. 08/01/2006 (mm/dd/yyyy) but excel thinks it is dd/mm/yyyy

whenever i start a new worksheet in the workbook, it's format is set as custom format. At the same time, whatever pivot table draw will be in this custom format. Is there anyway i can change the default format back to general? There is also a sample attached...The actual db is kinda more complex than that but there is a limitation of 40kb so...Is there any other preferred website to upload files?

I like to make my numbers with no decimals, with a comma. This means I have to constantly press a number of buttons to put them in the format I want. Not too big a deal but is there a way I can make one of the buttons in the number group default to the way I want the numbers to appear?

In the toolbar there's a section titled "Number" which allows you to change cell formats with selections named General, Number, Accounting, Date, Time, etc. I want to permanently change some of their default formats.
For instance, currently when I select Number the default is -4000.00. I want to PERMANENTLY change its default to (4,000.00). How do I do this?

I have a worksheet containing several tables of number values. I want to be able to take any table of values, change them to a different format, and do it using only an event trigger.
So if I have a table of integers, the next entry in that table will change everything to the new format.
Code:
Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
'Changes selected cells to MOT operation number format
If Target.Cells.Count > 1 Or Target.HasFormula Then Exit Sub
'Error trap
[Code]....
how to change values in the worksheet from the beginning. What I want is to know how to change values of an existing workbook using only VBA code.

I am having slight trouble with the formatting of some cells. Every month I will be copying data into a row, the problem is Excel thinks it's a date instead of an integer of some sort.
The value copied will look something like this:
79:42:00
(meaning 79 hours and 42 minutes)
Excel is taking that and interpreting it as:
1/3/1900 7:42:00 AM
Is there an easy way to format this so Excel thinks it's a number (even if 79.7).
I tried to change the format of the cell to "Text", but it changes it to: 3.32083333333333

I cannot change the number format in a single sheet of my spreadsheet. I can go to format cells and select colour etc but it will not change the number format.
Another issue on the same sheet is that linked cells i.e cell b3 formula "=A3" displays "=A3" not the actual value in A3. Again, i cannot change the number format of this cell and yes, auto calc is on.
Whilst not wanting to offer a partial explaination (per the rules) just before this happened i was pressing a combitation of Shift+Control+` - not sure if that is relevant.
I want to get the sheet back to its 'normal' working order.

I have an if statement which shows either GP% or average revenue per product. The problem is that GP% needs to be in a percentage format and revenue per product needs to be in number format. 500 is now shown as 50000% or 50% will be shown as 0.5 for example. Is there anyway on changing the format of a cell based on the number?

I have used this forum periodically and it has saved my bacon on numerous occasions so I know someone can help with this!
I created a workbook for staff planning and it's becoming a behemoth!
I'm wanting a range of cells within a row to change the number format to "[hh]:mm" based on a value in the 2nd column of that row. I have played about with a few things and can't seem to get it to work. What I have so far is this:

what I am looking to do is when in colum AA a cell changes to "Drawdown" I'd like the cells in column A:D,F,H:L,N:Q,S:Z on the same row to grey out and a line to be insert below the cell that was changed, if it selects "Fee" , cells in A:D,F,H:L,N:Q,S:Z on the same row.
I have writen the following butit seems rather cumbersome and I can not get the insert line to work.
Code:
Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
Dim WatchRange As Range
Dim IntersectRange As Range
Set WatchRange = Range("AA1:AA500")
Set IntersectRange = Intersect(Target, WatchRange)
[code].....

Format the number in Column AL to '[hh]:mm' when Column C's value is ="P/T", otherwise format to 'General'
Column C's value is referenced from another sheet in the same workbook via a VLOOKUP function.
Column AL's value is based on an IF formula which goes like this:
=IF($C4="F/T",SUM($AJ4)+($AK4/2),SUM($D4:$AH4))
Basically the above formula asks if Column C's value is F/T then count (because if F/T then the corresponding values in that row are whole numbers). If not, then SUM (because if P/T the corresponding values in that row are set to [hh]:mm format).
I have another sheet in the same workbook which has code (quoted below) which does something similar but I don't understand it enough to get it doing what I want for the sheet in question.

Is there a way to have a drop down or some sort of input cell that would change the look and format of the entire worksheet? Not sure how to pose the question?? For example.
What I'm working on is a departmental forecast sheet.
I want my department heads to be able to all look at the same excel file, then be able to input or select their department from a drop down. Once the department is selected that would call for excel to bring up the forecast for their specific department (**Each departments sheet is a little different).

In a new worksheet, I enter the following inputs:
Input # 1: 08/26/08 and see 8/26/2008
Input # 2 (in a different cell): 08/26 and see Aug-26
Input # 3 (in the same cell as #2 because I didn't like the result I saw): 08/26/08 and I still see Aug-26
Question: The desired result I would like to see in all three cases is: 8/26/2008
Would someone please explain:
1) How do I set the default date to automatically assume current year if I merely enter 08/26 ?
2) Why entering 08/26 is such a grievous sin that I should so horribly point Excel in the wrong direction - or at least until I reformat that cell?
System info: Windows XP Pro & Office 2003
Regional Settings: short date format M/d/yyyy

In excel if it changes number to exponential format it would default to, for example if number is 12345 -> 1.2345e4, 0.012345 ->1.2345e-2
I was wondering it is possible to which a function to change this default format ie for example 0.012345 -> 12.345e-3
I basically want this kind of formatting as its would display information in terms of milli, micro, pico (or the opposite side kilo, mega, giga and so on).

In a worksheet, I should have selected the region where data is present, and center align all the cells. Instead, I selected the entire worksheet and did the same, so that whenever new data comes in the relative cells are already formatted. This has caused the workbook size to increase dramatically. (So, I assume that changing a cell property from the default value uses some memory). Is there a way to restore the format of the blank cells to the default values, so that memory is freed and the workbook size decreases again?

inability to set a default row height and still allow the occasional row that requires more space (i.e., one of it's cells has multiple lines of wrapped text) to AutoFit if necessary.
Say you have the data shown in NormalSettings.png in an Excel file (see attachments) and you want to have a little more room between the shorter rows, but not have them all set as big as the expanded rows. One way to do this in bulk is to select the entire spreadsheet and set a fixed row height, but this chops off any cells that require more space than your default height (see FixedRowHeight20.png). The only way to fix this is to manually scan through your sheet and individually select all rows with cells that need more room than your preferred row height and AutoFit them (good luck if your spreadsheet is any size...) . If you try selecting the entire sheet and choose Format-Row-Autofit, you're back to the crowded display shown in 'NormalSettings.png'.
My workaround to this annoying problem is this: choose a column that you're not using (I just select the very last column in the sheet by holding down CTRL and pressing the right arrow until the screen stops moving) and highlight the entire column by selecting the column header. Then increase the font size for that column...voila, even your blank rows will now AutoFit to the new font size rather than the font size you are using for your data...effectively increasing your default row height without sacrificing AutoFit capabilities. I find that using 16 as a dummy font size makes my data (which is font size 10, Arial) look nicely spaced out, but experiment and try stuff until you find what you like!

I am setting the fill color of a cell by setting the .Interior.Color property and using the RGB() VBA function. My VBA code saves the spreadsheet in Excel2003 format at the end of the creation process. This has worked great and my spreadsheets looked correct when reopened in Excel 2007. When these same spreadsheet files are opened in Excel 2003 the colors are all very different. Does Excel 2003 handle colors differently than Excel 2007? Is there a preferred way to specify colors that will work on both platforms?
I have attached a specific example. The color is #B4CF27 or RGB(180, 207, 39). When I open this sheet in Excel 2007 the color is a shade of green (the desired color). When I open it on Excel 2003 I get yellow. I tried swapping the red and blue values thinking there might be some byte ordering issue and it does not produce the yellow on Excel 2007.

In other words, I am trying to have all cells in the sheets I work with appear grey on my screen by default. A coworker of mine used to work in banking and she has grey cells but does not know how she changed them.
