How To Create Expandable Cells For Large Blocks Of Text

Apr 25, 2014

create cells which could be expanded/shrunk, to either show the first sentence or so of the essay, or the full essay. I'd need to be able to expand/collapse each cell individually, not by row or column as the tutorials I've found have shown. I'm pretty sure I've seen this done with a little +/- sign in the corner of the cell but I can't find the option. It would be a bit like on a website that have show more, show less buttons.

Large Dataset - COUNTIFS On Blocks Of Text

Nov 3, 2011

I have a large dataset. under the heading Theme there are blocks of text, ie not single words. i have created a simplified version below

Sample table:

StateThemeVictoriatradeNew South Walestrade, ownershipNew South WalestradeVictoriaownership,
test textVictoriatest text, tradeVictoriatrade, ownershipVictoriaownership, trade

I want to count, for example the number of times the words 'ownership' OR 'trade' appear for Victoria.

The formula i am using is doubling up on the last 2 entries.

This is what I have:

=SUM(COUNTIFS(A2:A8,{"Victoria"},B2:B8, {"*ownership*";"*trade*"}))

Extract All Approx Match Determined From Expandable List In Sheet Two And Create Table?

Nov 18, 2013

I download a daily inventory file from my supplier.
.
I sell only selected products from that file.
.
I would like to use a list of the product part numbers of the products I sell on sheet 2 (Inventory) and have all the results from sheet 1 (ProductFeed) built into an expandable table on sheet two including all the parts numbers (expandable because I will add or delete part numbers from the list) I have listed and not just one part number but several.
.
Second issue: the download file contains part numbers in column "A" with variables like 418, 418_color, 418_size etc.... I would like all part numbers that begin with the number 418 and the ones that contain the variable added to be listed in the new table so I will get a list of all part number 418 and the variables which include 418 in them.
.
I want to return the results of the whole row(s) of the matched data as well in the new table.
.
I have attached a file of the working data that I have with the data I will use although the ProductFeed will change daily which I intend to copy and paste into the table each day.

Graph - Expandable Range

Feb 1, 2010

i have a range (A2:A30) that has values imported into it (sheet1).
in B2:B30, i'm doing a simple calculation based on the perspective values in A.
The number of values imported into A is different each time my model is run.

i'd like to graph A and B columns against each other but i don't want to have to adjust the range on the graph each time the model is run.

ps. i tried graphing A2:A30 vs. B2:B30 but the graph also shows the empty cells in A so that doesn't work.

Linking Blocks Of Cells Across Sheets

May 1, 2014

I have a master tab that has data grouped as follows

Column 1
title of a section (written once then left blank for the rest of a section)

Column 2
numerous descriptors (each in a new row)

Column 3
The response to the descriptors in column 2

I want to link entire sections from column 2 and 3 into different excel files so that if I make changes to column 2 or 3 in the master tab, the changes are made to all tabs. If there is a way, I'd like it if I add a row to the master, it is automatically added to the others.

Split Address Blocks Across Multiple Cells

Feb 20, 2006

I have cells of block addresses that are delimited (tab I believe - there's a
small square that appears).

I need to split the addresses out into separate columns for each line of address. I tried using the Text to Columns wizard as suggested by Excel Help, but ended up with only the first line of address being posted in the cell to the right (the rest of the address was nowhere to be seen).

I'm sure I've done this before but can't for the life of me remember how I did it.

Rearrange, Move Blocks Of Cells To New Columns

Apr 19, 2008

I saw a post that needed a solution for moving blocks of cells in order to get fewer rows but more columns. The post is gone but I'd like to think my work wasn't in vain as the algorithm was more difficult than I thought. The problem was wanting make a 5000 X 4 grid into a 1700 X 12 grid, 55 rows and 4 columns at a time. This is sometimes done for visiblity or printing purposes to get more data going across instead of down. An example would be wanting to have more data accross on a print page and the page holds 55 lines of data.

For example, A56:D110 would be moved to E1:H55, A111:D165 to I1:L55, A166:D220 to A56:D110 etc. The code is somewhat generic so different blocks of rows and columns can be specified. To see this code work, enter the number 1 in columns A-D, then fill series -> step by one for a thousand or so rows. Then run the code.

Sub FewerRowsMoreColumns()
'Rearranges blocks of cells so the end result is more columns and fewer rows
Dim RowStop As Long
Dim ColStop As Integer
Dim RowStep As Long
Dim ColStep As Integer
Dim RowOffset As Long
Dim rw As Long
Dim col As Integer

ColStop = 12 'Enter the last column number you want the cells moved to
RowStep = 55 'Enter the number of rows you want to move at one time
ColStep = 4 'Enter the number of data columns you are starting with.....................

Create A List From A Large Table

Nov 21, 2009

I am trying to do is create a list from a large table (see attached). I have 2 columns (A and B) listing 'Asset' and 'Area' and then 2 rows (1 and 2) listing 'type of task' and 'task'. This forms a table with entries in the cells (from C3 onwards) denoting frequency of each task at each location, i.e. daily, monthly, 6 monthly and annual. This gives me quite a large table which is quite confusing. Can I create a formula to sort all the daily activities which will give me a list of the 4 corresponding properties 'country', 'location' (in columns A and B) and 'type of task', 'task' (in Rows 1 and 2)? Then do the same for the different frequencies populated in the table, 'monthly', '6 monthly' and 'annual' ???

Create User Input For LARGE Function

May 18, 2009

I want to create a user input for a "LARGE" function so that I can then return the specified # of "large" items. i.e. user wants to get the top X number of users, user then enters number either into a dialog box or cell, code then looks at the number and populates a range of cells based on the input value. The current code that I am using simply refers to an existing table (r9:r30) that I then used the auto fill to copy to cells below it.

=INDEX(Sheet2!B$20:B$961,MATCH((LARGE(Sheet2!$F$20:$F$961,$R9)),Sheet2!$F$20:$F$961,0))

I really want to be able to just get a user dialog box going that will automatically populate both the range r9:rx (where X is the user input) and then also copy the above formula into the x number of cells below it.

Create Large Table From Smaller Tables When Columns Not In Same Order

Jul 17, 2014

I have a lot of data to try and summarize but they are in multiple smaller tables. I wish to only extract 2 variables, 'number' and 'total' from all of my smaller tables (lots of them) so the problem looks like this, i have these tables for example where the 'total' title is in a different column depending on which of the smaller tables you are looking at:

cat 1
cat 2
cat 3
total

[Code]....

I am trying to get:

number
Total
123456
30
234567
60

[Code]...

Because the number column is fixed and all of the smaller tables will all have a number in the same column maybe i can insert a column next to the number column and say "find the value where the column title is 'total' - however the location of the column title would change so not sure if this would work? I was also thinking of sorting the columns but that will not work either because of the smaller multiple tables?

Matching Text In A Large Table?

May 8, 2014

I have 3 columns thousands of rows each, P, Q and R. Column R is the names of accounts.

I have another column E with also account names but not in same order as R. Another small glitch is, some of the names in R have extra characters at the end (such as one or more spaces bars, etc). But the entirety of the text in E is present in a cell in R, sometimes with extra characters at the end.

I want to match the account names and pull the corresponding values in the same row from columns P and Q, and populate my currently empty columns C and D.

Open Large Text File With Query?

I have a large text file (greater than 64k lines) which I need to import into excel. I only need anything imported from the text file that is for dates I specify. So I would like to run a line by line query and only import the lines I need.

The dates are always in position 43-50 (dd-mm-yy) in the text file itself, so the code would have to look at that section, see if the date is within the range specified and only import if it is (and then move onto the next line).

I tried the paste special advice and the 3 ways microsoft suggests. I have a feeling its not working because of the required format that I need.

I need to do this project tonight!

Background: these are imported numbers, I had to combine other excel databases... By the way, is their an easier way to combine excel sheets into 1?

Using SUMIFS On A Large Amount Of Data - Numeric Value Stored As Text?

Aug 1, 2012

I was using SUMIFS on a large amount of data, but wasn't getting back the exact sum that I needed.

It turns out that I had cells with values similar to the following

Code:
000123
0123
Basically, text fields with the same numerical values, except for the number of leading zeros. Due to the nature of the table, the number of leading zeros is important. When I did SUMIFS, it counted the sum of the two values together. For example with the following:
Item
Batch
Qty

ABC
123
1

It appears that even if a numeric value is stored as text, SUMIFS treats it like a number.

Split Large Cell To Several Cells?

Mar 23, 2013

the question: i'd like to split a large cell in to smaller, fixed-size cells (columns) by a standard formula.

example: consider cell A1 = 'ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ' i'd like a formula that created B1 = 'ABCDE' C1 = 'FGHIJ' D1 = 'KLMNO', etc

I used =Left (A1, 5) and got A1 = 'ABCDE' easily enough. I'm stumped at coming up with a formula that provides the next 5, and the next 5, etc.

the setup: if you want to know why i really need to solve the question i'm asking rather than using the split cell function:

i have a large set of data from a vendor. ideally, this worksheet will be used for other vendors that submit data similarly.

the script i'm writing takes a specific format--which i can't logically hold the vendors to. so, my specific formatting is on one sheet, referencing the data from each vendor on another sheet.

there is one field of data from vendors that is large ( >4000 characters, typically). however, this field makes my SQL server puke. i need to break this field down in to chunks of 1000 characters, and then re-concatenate after it leaves SQL to its final destination.

because i want to use some script automation to reuse this project, i'm reluctant to just use the split cell function to break up the data. rather i'd like to use whatever data is provided, and referentially split it up in my pre-formatted data.
