Indirect Formula Syntax For Referring To A Range On Two Worksheets
Jul 5, 2012
B1=Name of WorkSheet
B2=Name of 2nd Worksheet
I am trying to write a sum formula using Indirect so that the end-user can enter the names of the sheets in B1 & B2 (the values are always in cell F5 on each sheet). I thought this would work but it is throwing a REF# error.
=SUM(INDIRECT("'"&B1&":"&B2&"'!F5"))
with some added spaces for clarity:
=SUM(INDIRECT(" ' " & B1 & " : " & B2 & " ' ! F5"))

Always have problems getting my head round the syntax of the indirect function and am unable to find anything similar that's been asked.
I want to perform an operation on two numbers where the user selects which to use (add, subtract, multiply or divide) entered into another cell like this:
******** ******************** ************************************************************************>Microsoft Excel - 200701 - LCC.xls___Running: 11.0 : OS = Windows XP (F)ile (E)dit (V)iew (I)nsert (O)ptions (T)ools (D)ata (W)indow (H)elp (A)boutC3C5=
ABCD14+5*2****3Normal*9*4****5Indirect*#REF!*Sheet3*
[HtmlMaker 2.42] To see the formula in the cells just click on the cells hyperlink or click the Name box
PLEASE DO NOT QUOTE THIS TABLE IMAGE ON SAME PAGE! OTHEWISE, ERROR OF JavaScript OCCUR.

I want to consolidate certains cells in 30 identical worksheets in a workbook. I understood that if I use the 3-D formula method, that I could insert new identical worksheets into the range of worksheets and the consolidated totals would update. Is that correct?
I cannot seem to get the syntax to work. When I read the Excel Help file it gives an example of =sum(sheet2:sheet7!B3) but I don't understand how Excel could answer this ( if the worksheets were named Sheet2,sheet3,sheet4 etc up to sheet7)
In my example, the formula is clearly wrong. Why does it not use the single quotation marks '? I cannot find references to the proper syntax anywhere. I have your training program but this does not spell it out for me either. If I use Data>Consolidate then I have to labouriously do this for each cell that I want to consolidate.

I am trying to use the INDIRECT function to look up values on a range of other worksheets. I have a column of data in col A which is essentially a lot of different worksheet names. On each worksheet I need to use VLOOKUP to find a value.
Easier to show formulas. This is an example of what I want to recreate:
=VLOOKUP(O2, test!B3:C13,2,FALSE)
I want to replace the text "test" with the text in column A. So the first INDIRECT formula looks like this:
=INDIRECT("VLOOKUP(O2, " &A1& "!B3:C13,2,FALSE)")
Which to me looks like it should work but I get a #REF! error. I've tried various permutations, e.g. having the INDIRECT part of the formula located in a different place (next to the "test" text) but run in to similar issues.

I am using VB in Excel to write a formula for summing a column of numbers that will vary in length. I have been using the Indirect formula and have the start and end cells of the range identified in another location. My problem is, the macro in vb is sending the Indirect formula to the cells containing the start and end points by using relative functions ie. go across 30 columns and up 10 rows to get start cell. I wanted it to just save the cell location of the start and end points.
EG.
VB formula is: "= SUM(INDIRECT(R[-23]C[27]&R3C29):INDIRECT(R[-23]C[27]&R3C30))"
whereas I just want it to read "=Sum(Indirect(C4&D5):INDIRECT(C4&D6))"
where cell C4 gives the column letter and D5 the row number of the start of the range and C4 and D6 give the column letter and row number of the end of the range.

I am trying to use code here to facilitate "cascading" comboboxes. However, my comboboxes are in a worksheet, not a userform and I am unsure which bits of the syntax are incorrect.
Currently I am stuck at
" . . . . .
For I = nr + 1 To N
Controls("ComboBox" & I).Clear
. . . . "
The error message tells me that "Sub or Function not defined."
I think (??) the Controls function relates to User Forms, not activex and worksheets, but I don't know what to replace it with or how to alter the syntax.

I'm trying to optimize code by avoiding activating other worksheets, but I'm running into a problem with a match function.
I'm using a workbook called "Template" and then opening another workbook called "DCP" and trying to use the match function to figure out what row data is on. I can get this first line of code to work:
HTML Code:
MatchedRowNumber = WorksheetFunction.Match(Combo, Sheets("Sheet1").Range("A:A"), 0)
However for that to work, I have to activate the other workbook. I want to avoid that and stay within the "Template" workbook. I think I need something like this:
HTML Code:
MatchedRowNumber = WorksheetFunction.Match(Combo, DCP.Sheets(DCPSheet).Range("A:A"), 0)
That one however doesn't work... looks like I have the wrong syntax.
Below is an excerpt for the code in case something is wrong with how I set the variables.
HTML Code:
Sub StockOrderByDCP()
Dim Template As Workbook
Dim DCP As Workbook
Dim MSS As Worksheet
Dim DCPSheet As Worksheet
[Code] ..........

I am trying to sum through multiple worksheets but maintain flexibility using INDIRECT but it is not working!
I have a worksheet for each month of the year Jan - Dec with a financial result. In order to get a Year To Date figure I would have a formula such as:
=sum(Jan:Jul!B3) for a July YTD.
However, I want to maintain flexibility such that I can enter the worksheet name in cell A1, e.g. Sep and then have a formula such as:
=sum(INDIRECT("Jan:"&A1&"!B3"))
Thus allowing me to generate the correct YTD at any point. All I get is a #REF error.

I have the exact same problem as was posted in the past, in this post:
http://www.ozgrid.com/forum/showthread.php?p=231189
I am trying to sum across a dynamic range of worksheets: sum(sheet1:sheet3!A1). I would like to have "sheet1" and "sheetX" in a separate updateable cell and refer to these for the sum:
Basically, do something like:
Cell A2 = Sheet1
Cell A3 = Sheet3
sum(concatenate("Sheet1:":"&indirect(A3)&"!A1"))
When I use the following equation I get a "#REF" error(posted as a solution in the earlier thread):=SUMPRODUCT(--N(INDIRECT(" Sheet"&ROW(1:3)&"!A1"))) what is the "--N" for. Is there something that I should add?

I just named a range on a sheet and would like to paste that range on a different worksheet within the same workbook. I can't figure out how to refer to the range. I've tried several different variations so far. Example below:
ActiveWorkbook.ActiveSheet.Names.Add Name:="RawSectorData", RefersToR1C1:="=R6C1:R29C11"
'Add new sheet and paste data
ActiveSheet.Name = "Raw_data_Sector_Summary"
ActiveWorkbook.Sheets.Add.Name = "RawData"
Range("A1").Formula = "=RawData!(RawSectorData)"

I have noticed in many of the Excel help files that the developers liked to use shortcut notation for Range reference in VBA.
For example, Range("A1:B10") would be [A1:B10].
I was doing a bit of testing with this, and was not able to make the shortcut notation work with a variable. Does the shortcut method have the capabilities to do the equivalent of Range("A1:B" & LR)?
If it does have that capability, is it just due to force of habit that we always use Range() to refer to ranges, or would there be a more in-depth reason.

I have the following formula that I want to copy to a worksheet named Tankersley:
=IF('Tankersley Input'!B5=0,"",'Tankersley Input'!B5)
I would like the formula to read the worksheet name rather than entering the word Tankersley directly, so that if I copy it to another worksheet named Tyson, the formula would read:
=IF('Tyson Input'!B5=0,"",'Tyson Input'!B5)
How would this formula need to read?

I'm working on or any part of it on here, because the work belongs to my employers and would constitute the loss of trade secrets. It would also take me way longer than I have the time to invest to put together a functional duplicate of the relevant part of the sheet just to be able to post it.
With that in mind, what I'm trying to do is refer to part of a range that spans five columns (though it could conceivably span more in the future, so I'd rather not count on that detail) and a constantly changing numbers of rows. The part I want to refer to includes all columns, and all rows except the first and the last in the range.

Is it at all possible to refer to a array that may change in a formula?
For example I need to use a Vlookup formula, however the table array will change depending on the value of another cell.
I need the user to be able to select the column heading that the lookup should work off from a drop down list. So if the user selects column heading C, the array should start from column C though it will always end at column Z. If the user selects column heading Y the array would be Y:Z.

I'm trying to find the details required to refer to contents of a cell and then treat the value as the formula. IE for Sum(B5:B8), i'd like to have two cells, one with a 5 in it and one with the 8.
I know its possible if i put "b5" as the cell content using indirect - but I'll be using the same cell value to update formulas in different columns so I cant afford to include the B. I assume theres a very simple method along the lines of Sum((B&(Cell(a4)):B&(Cell(a5)))?

I think I understand what you were talking about now with the generation of the watchbill using the rand() and sort. You were trying to get me to get rid of the whole system I was using before and use only the rand and sort. I thought you were asking me to incorperate the rand sort thing into the randomization process I already had using offset etc. The whole thing works good now, however, because the column Ive designated for the roster names may or may not always be filled the formula sometimes refers to empty cells in that column thus producing 0s on the watchbill. I was thinking maybe (if its possible) having a formula to identify a 0 and if so skip to the next cell down. The formula would repeat until it found a name without a zero in it.

I'm trying to create a sumifs that has 'before date X' and 'on or after date Y' as two of the criteria.
In the past, I have simple done a DATE(x,y,z) function inside the sumifs, but I'm trying to change this for reasons that would take a little while to get into. Let's just say it would make my coworkers lives much easier.
My hope is to get these date range criteria by referring to ribbons which have the dates in mind in them. Here is the formula I have now, and an example. See the red part of the formula.
Say I'm trying to have before Aug 1, 14 and on/after July 1, 14 as two criteria. FBP column A is where I would have the dates that this criteria would search through:
B1: 7/1/14
C1: 8/1/14
Formula: =SUMIFS(FBP!$G:$G,FBP!$B:$B,"=E",FBP!$A:$A,">="&B1,FBP!$A:$A,"

"Smith B" is text in C1.
My current formula in C3 is a simple reference to a cell in another workbook:
=+'Z:Time Records2007[Smith B.xls]Daily Time'!$C1352
I would the formula to refer to C1 to get the "Smith B" part.
This would allow me to copy the formula to the right and reference different text as it looks at D1, E1, F1, etc.
To say it another way. I want to know if there's a way to make a formula that would result in looking at the file Smith B.xls by inserting a refernce to C1 in it?
=+'Z:Time Records2007["C1".xls]Daily Time'!$C1352

I´m writting a macro. It works find until a certain point. When I want to change some outputs of the macro without changing the syntax, it display an error mesage while runing the macro. It says Else without If. Which is quite disturbing because the Else was not creating any problem before. Here is my macro before I changed the conditions (this one work nicely)
Sub Copy_Sheet_Beta()
Set wba = ActiveWorkbook
On Error Resume Next
If IsWorkbookOpened("Projekt.xls", "C:Documents and SettingsfrederikSkrivebordRedd Barna") Then
Workbooks("Projekt.xls").Activate 'In case open, just activate "Projekt"
Else
Workbooks.Open Filename:="C:Documents and SettingsfrederikSkrivebordRedd Barnaprojekt.xls"
End If
Set wb = Workbooks("Projekt.xls")
wb.Activate
If Not SheetExists(wba.ActiveSheet. Range("C1").Value) Then

I have created 500+ defined names that refer to worksheets that do not exist (yet). When I add the previously nonexistent worksheets, the defined names that refer to them are not "live" and do not work in functions where that name is used. If you go into the defined names and click on the ones that refer to the now existent worksheet, they start to work, but I was hoping there was a way around this step (e.g. a simple macro that says "update all defined names").
I created all the names so that the person who will eventually be using this will only have to add an appropriately named worksheet and put the data in...then everything will automatically work. I do not think adding names is difficult, but the person who will be using this does, so I want to avoid that person mucking around in my names.

I am using Excel 2003
Cell B13 contains the row number of the first row of data on the sheet and B14 contains the row number of the end row of data. This is because the number of rows vary over time.
I'm trying to do a COUNTIF to test for duplicates in column R (contains integers) and I want to specify the range to count by referring to the value in B13 and B14 in the formula and so I have the following which returns FALSE for some reason even if the value in R19 appears more than once in the range ...
=COUNTIF(INDEX(R:R,$B$13):INDEX(R:R,$B$14),R19)>1

How to do this:
I have many sheets called;
Input Jan
Input Feb
Input ....
Meaning 1 for each month.
I have another sheet where I want a formula that can
..............................................JUL
CapEx.................................... EBITDA...............................EBITDA %
"=('Input Jul 2014'!$BI$3)/1000"
The "Jul" which stand for July, it is possible to have a formula where I can have certain text in a formula that is based on the value in B1 (In this case, B1 being JUL in bold writing.)
Like this;
=('Input &B1 2014'!$BI$3)/1000
Or must I manually go in and replace all formulas for each month?

just need a hand tweaking the syntax on a names range.
Range 1
=INDEX(Sheet2!$C:$C,5):INDEX(Sheet2!$C:$C,ROW(LRow)-1)
LRow: Is a named active row for the last row. [say row 10]
This named range only selects ONE Column
How can I get it to select TWO columns [ie C & D] as in the example below does. It does it by the last number 2, goes two columns wide?
Range 2
=OFFSET(Sheet2!$C$5,0,0,COUNTA(Sheet2!$C:$C),2)
I can't figure out how to express that in the Range 1?
