Preserve Formatting On Pivot Chart Refresh
Sep 22, 2009
have come across the apparent inflexibility of a pivot chart retaining its user defined formatting whenever it is refreshed.
I understand I can save my chosen formatting as a 'user defined' custom chart, which can be applied post-refresh, but was wondering if a simple bit of code would do this automatically, saving the additional clicks!
how to deal with the attached. How could I adapt the code to call in other 'user defined' charts I may create in the future?

I'm having a devil of a time trying to preserve the formatting on a pivot table that I made in Excel 2003. As near as I can tell, I've done the appropriate things --- check the preserve formatting box, uncheck autoformat --- but my formatting is not preserved when I pivot.
Adding to the mystery is the fact that some formatting is preserved but not all. I'm guessing either I'm missing something obvious or this is just an unruly, rogue pivot table that refuses to be formatted.

I have created a pivot table and chart. The pivot chart consists of three sets of data from the pivot table. Two of the data sets are lines and the third data set is displayed as columns. I made the third data set into columns by right clicking on the data series line and selecting chart type. I change the chart type for that data set to a column and it worked great. The only problem is that when data is refreshed in the associated pivot table, the entire chart turns into columns with completely different formatting. Does anyone know how I can maintain the graph with the two lines and one column data set when I refresh the data?

I have a query with ODBC connection to a SQL database. This query's parameter is linked to a cell. The resultant data is the source for a pivot table. I want to refresh the pivot table, when the query is run. I've tried using the cell that triggers the query....but the problem is that the query takes about 10 seconds to run. By the time the query returns new data....the pivot has already refreshed. I need it to refresh AFTER the query is complete.
I tried adding a cell that sums up the data from the query...thinking when THAT changes (due to updated data), to trigger the pivot refresh. Problem is that I don't know the trigger for when the sum cell changes (ie....formula change, not typed in.)

I am trying to format the date in my x-axis which is currently 'month-day-year' but I would llike it to be 'month-year' I know it is because my data that was used for the date is 'month-day-year' but since I am using power pivot I can not change the data. Is there a way I can change it to my desired format so that my pivot chart will only have the 'month-year' format in the x-axis?

Was working on this problem for a poster: [URL] ......
I can't seem to get the pivot table/chart to format exactly as I desire. It seems that as soon as I add 'group by hour and day' Excel forces the formatting to AM/PM and I want to keep it military. I want to group by hour, so that data that occurs at 6:00 and at 6:30 are grouped, and I had to group by day so that 6:00 on 1/1 was separated from 6:00 on 1/2.
Attached is a worksheet which shows the desired chart format (not a pivot chart), and the attempted pivot chart. I want the pivot chart to match the 'simple' chart in look and feel. Any attempts to change the formatting of the row labels to 'h' is promptly ignored by Excel.
Note the two tasks that occur at hour 18 (one at 18:00 and the other at 18:20 (you will need to see the formatting to truly see the minutes)). Those should be combined in the pivot table (and they are) and on my 'adjusted' table (where I used SUMIFS).

I have programmed a button that allows the user to import XML data into my workbook via the following
Sub Button5_Click()
FileToOpen = Application. GetOpenFilename("XML files (*.xml), *.xml")
If FileToOpen <> False Then
ActiveWorkbook.XmlMaps("RouteDoc_Map").Import (FileToOpen)
End If
End Sub
All my XML data comes in great to the associated mapped cells (on several worksheets) but the data that is coming in as a list erases the alternating white/gray conditional formating that I've applied via FORMULA IS =MOD(ROW(),2). How would I be able to preserve the alternating white/gray conditional formating, no matter how many rows are being imported via my button ?

I am making template and trying to preserve formatting when users paste into a cell. From my research, I have found that this is impossible with simple format protection, it works to prevent changing formating, but if something is pasted (with normal paste), the format will change.
I have found a few solutions, but can't get them to work correctly
Solution A: Disable normal paste and substitute Paste Special - Values
How will this work with pasting via CTRL + V and the right click menu? I need both to function.
Solution B: Allow users to paste normally, but use a macro to copy formatting from a hidden sheet
I actually found code for this, but I couldn't figure out exactly how to impliment it. The sheet that users will be pasting into is called "Batch Summary" and I was trying to pull formatting from a sheet names "Batch Summary Format", but was getting an error.

Is it possible to preserve original text formatting when copying and pasting only part of a cell. Like, for example, a cell may contain ten words one of which is in red and underlined. How do you copy that one word and paste it in another cell so that it remains in red and underlined?

With ADO (ADODB.Connection), is there a way to preserve the cell formatting on the worksheet that the recordset data is copied to? Right now, if I format a Cell's font and font-size, then run the Macro to refresh the data, the formatting is gone and it's back to default formatting.

I have a cell with some text in it that has formatting applied (bold in this case). I want to append some text on the end using VBA, but preserve the existing font formatting information. So say I have "one bold one" in my cell, I'm executing the following: ActiveCell.Value = ActiveCell.Value & "two"
But this wipes out the bold information. Is there any way of preserving the bold that's already in the cell. Either perhaps by copying the Characters object and reapplying it, or by some other method?

I currently have several pivot table that's linked to a single pivot table(let's call it X) in the same workbook. I'm doing this to limit the file size because the data in X comes from a text file that has millions of lines. However, it's such a pain every time I need to update the tables because simply clicking "refresh" does not update those tables that are linked to X with new data. I would have to instruct the wizard in every linked table to point to X every time. I'm trying to write a small program to re-point to X for each of those other pivot tables whenever i refresh data. However, after trying to record the steps to do this I'm still unable to run these
Sub Macro1()
ActiveSheet.PivotTableWizard SourceType:=xlPivotTable, SourceData:= _
"PivotTable1"
End Sub

My boss wants me to design a dynamic, updatable chart in Excel 2003. I initially made a Pivot Chart based on a Pivot Table which worked perfectly, but it doesn't look professional enough when printed (or viewed) and she wants me to approach it a different way.
So, I created a graph based on the data in a Pivot Table, and used dynamic ranges as the source for the graph series so that the chart updates when the criteria fields are changed for the Pivot Table. I then added two combo boxes (ie data validation lists) to the Chart sheet, and wrote VBA code so that whenever the combo box values are changed, the Criteria fields for the Pivot Table on the 2nd sheet are updated accordingly, and this in turn causes the graph to be updated as well.
This solution also worked perfectly, but now I've been told to create the graph without macros.
Does anyone have any suggestions? The requirements/details are as follows:
1. The Pivot Table is on sheet "PIVOT", and the graph is on sheet "GRAPH"
2. The Pivot Table has two criteria - School Name and Year Level
3. On sheet "GRAPH" there are two data-validated fields, School and Year, which only allow the selection of valid Schools and Year Levels
Is there any way to make the Pivot Table update when values are changed in the fields on the CHART sheet so that the chart also updates, but without using code nor a Pivot Chart?

1) i have office 2003 on a laptop. within powerpoint, i can create a 'microsoft excel chart 11' object. to create a link to the excel data source, do i have to go through the odbc sql setup? it works, but i don't want my powerpoint to be dependent on some excel file somewhere. what are the other options to insert/make a functional pivot chart in powerpoint with the data also within powerpoint? the data as sheet option does not result in the chart being a pivot, it's just a plain chart. it has to be a proper object, not an image paste or a chart that updates links with the excel file open.
2) i have office 2007 on my other laptop. i can not find any suitable object to choose from to make a pivot chart in powerpoint. what's the best way to go about in 2007 version?
3) am i going about this the wrong way with the objects? should i be after vba code?

I've used this code prior and it worked fine in Excel 2007, now I'm having issues with it. Originally every Pivottable & Query pointed to a different CSV file. Now I have two pivottables built off a Excel worksheet that is built from a Query. This allows me to do some complex lookups that I couldn't do with just the Pivottable and MS Query alone.
Here's the code that's failing out: Any problems with it in Excel 2007?
Private Sub Update_All_Data_Click()
Dim pvt As PivotTable
Dim ws As Worksheet
Dim qt As QueryTable
mytitle = "This will refresh all data for validation, are you sure?"
Msg = "The Refresh process takes about 5 minutes, are you sure you want to continue?"
Response = MsgBox(Msg, vbExclamation + vbYesNo, mytitle)
Select Case Response
Case Is = vbYes
' Do Nothing, continue with program
Case Is = vbNo
Worksheets("instructions").Range("a1").Select
End
End Select
For Each ws In ThisWorkbook.Worksheets
For Each qt In ws.QueryTables
qt.BackgroundQuery = True
qt.Refresh
Next qt
Next ws
For Each ws In ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets
For Each pvt In ws.PivotTables
pvt.RefreshTable
Next pvt
Next ws
mytitle = "Confirmation of data refresh"
Msg = "The data has been refreshed"
Response = MsgBox(Msg, vbExclamation, mytitle)
End Sub

I am having trouble getting visual basic to update a pivot table.
(using manual refresh on the same pivot works just fine).
I have recorded a macro of the manual procedure, but it fails to work when used in a visual basic program:
ActiveSheet.PivotTables("PivotTable2").PivotCache.Refresh
I have tried using code presented elsewhere in these forums
eg http://www.ozgrid.com/VBA/pivot-table-refresh.htm
but the table stubbornly refuses to update.
The pivot's source data range is dynamic and works fine.
I think I'm missing something obvious or I have have a bug.

I now have a Pivot table on my worksheet that works great, the only problem I have is I would like it to refresh my data at the push of a button. I now have to click on a cell where the pivot table data is>right click the mouse>select refresh data and then I get the updated info. I know you can install a button to to this exact same thing but I don't quite know how to. I need step by step instructions. I tried OzGrid search, but did not find exactly my need.
This is what I did thus far I opened my work book>click on data>then macros> record new macro>I got a pop screen>I named the macro Refresh_Pivot_Table>store to this workbook>click OK> I see at the bottom left of my screen that the macro is still recording> I then highlighted the Column of cells where the pivot table data is and then clicked>tools>macro>stop recording.
This is the point where I'm lost. What is the next step to do? When I go back to the cell where I began to start the macro and right click I don't get the option to create a text box so that I can make a button and assign the macro I just recorded. Is this the correct method or did I miss something?

I have a macro to refresh all pivottables in my workbook. Each pivottable source from the same data pool - in addition I have a filter on each pivottable. Is there a way to fix this filter, such that once the source data is updated, the filter doesn't change? Or to only refresh the "data" in the pivottable?
My code for refreshing all pivottables is given below.
Dim pvt As PivotTable
Dim sh As Worksheet
Application.Calculation = xlManual
For Each sh In Worksheets
For Each pvt In sh.PivotTables
pvt.RefreshTable
Next pvt
Next sh
Calculate
Application.Calculation = xlAutomatic

I'm hoping to automate some pivot table refreshes. I've got a dozen pivot tables on a sheet all with different numbers. I'm hoping I can write a code that loops through the pivot table names and runs the refresh. Here is the code as it is right now. I've essentially copied, pasted, and changed the name of the pivot table for the refresh.
I would like to create an array in vba (22,21,20,19,18...) that renames the PivotTable and runs the code.
sub Refresh ()
Dim pt4 As PivotTable
Dim Field4 As PivotField
Dim NewCat4 As String
Set pt4 = ActiveSheet.PivotTables("PivotTable22")
