Subtracting Time (finding The Difference Between Times)
Dec 8, 2009
I am having trouble finding the difference between times. I have two cells, A1, A2. Times will be placed in there each day. A1 will have the first time and A2 will have a later time that day. i.e. A1 12:25AM, A2 2:45AM. A3 would have the formula. In this case I am looking for an answer of 2:00 (2hrs).
My second issue will be times when I have A1 11:20pm and A2 1:20am. I can't seem to get it to work.

I have a column that finds the difference between two times and I have it formatted as h:mm so that I get results such as 0:55 for 55 minutes. The problem is that when I try to get an average, median, and sum for all the times in that column it doesn't work. It comes up way short. I'm assuming it has somthing to do with the formatting.

I am having difficulty finding the difference between two times and dates in Excel. I have researched this on Google and tried several formulas but none have worked for me. The format the data is currently in can be seen below:
A1: 1/3/2014 11:00:02.230 B1: 2/7/2014 08:42:37.637
A2: 2/12/2014 07:51:58.663 B2: 2/13/2014 05:36:31.893
(Note all times are military time format)
I want to display the difference in C1 in a format along the lines of "dd hh:mm". The data for seconds and fractions of a second is included in the source data but is not needed in the final results.
If the date and time falls on the same day, I have no trouble doing a simple "B3-A3" to determine the answer. For example:
A3: 2/5/2014 09:56:06.273 B3: 2/5/2014 10:39:51.34
Gives me an answer of: 0:43
Trying to do the same for A1 and B1 gives me this: "03 21:42" when I format it to "dd hh:mm".
Is there a formula that would give me the correct answer in both of these cases?

Using the 24hr time format in cell a1 i have a start time of 10:43 and in cell b1
i have an estimated time i think a job should take in this case 30 minutes and in cell c1 i have the actual time that job was finished in this case 11:07 and in cell d1 i have a variance between the two times which in this case would be saving me 6 minutes

I'm trying to subtract two times to get the difference. Entries are in military format (1615) and VBA converts the time to 16:15. My problem is that when a time is entered between 0001 and 0059 (i.e. 0015), the VBA converts the time to :15. My formula does not recognize this, but does recognize 0:15 (entered without VBA). The cell is custom formatted as h:mm. I've tried several other formats including [h]:mm but can't get any to work. How can I get a formula to recognize it?
=IF(U12<T12,(U12+1)-T12,U12-T12)
where U12 is :15 and T12 is 23:00

I need some IF formula I believe that will yield an answer between 1 - 5. I'm not swavey enough with these things to figure this one out... trust me I tried and it keeps getting more confusing for me.
If the time worked is between certain time criteria then it would equal 1 - 5 depending on the time.
Example: If I work between the hours of 5am and 1pm then I would be in the Open/Mid range and would need to equal 2. If I only worked a few hours and my hours fell only between the Mid range then it would equal 3.
Then based on that... It would automatically fill in on the deployment charts... My name would show up on the Open and Mid Deployments under the task chosen for me to do that day.
I've attached a small sample of what I am looking for to kind of help show what I need. The highlighted areas are the areas I'm not sure how to do.

I'm looking for a formula in relation to the calculation of time. What I'm looking for is a way of finding the difference between the time two cells and it displaying it in the number of hours e.g.:
Cell 1__Cell 2__Cell 3
12:00 + 18:30 = 6.5 (it is 6 hours 30 mins but I want it displayed as a number.

I need to create a spreadsheet that will calculate the difference between two dates and show the result in days. The complicated part is that weekends (Sat and Sun) need to be ignored and any time after 4:30 pm needs to be treated as the next business day. I have been trying to look at similar questions in forum and use the WORKDAYS function with little success.
Example:
A1- 14/08/09 4:40 p.m.
B1- 17/08/09 9:10 a.m.
I need the answer (B1-A1) to show up as 0. But if the time in A1 was changed to 4:20 p.m. than the answer should be 1 day.

I'm looking for a formula that will calculate the difference in times between specific times while working with a 24 hr clock. Please see details below:
E3 provides the start time of 4:00
H3 provides an end time of 15:30
If an employee works betwen the hours of 0:00 (midnight) to 5:59, this is considered DIFF hours and is therefore the number I am seaking. So for the data noted above, the total DIFF hours worked is 2 hours.

I have a spreadsheet of clients' body weights each week which goes in a column and to the right of it I have a "diff" which I want to show weight gain/loss.
So for a client with weigh-ins the week of 10/1, 10/8, and 10/15 the columns will be:
10/1(V1)--Diff(W1)--10/8(X1)--Diff(Y1)--10/15(Z1)...and so on.
If I have weigh-ins for each week, no problem. I would just have to: =SUM(X1-V1) to get the change in weight from the week of 10/1 to 10/8. Say the client weighed 200 on 10/1 (V2) and 195 on 10/8 (X2), the difference (or "diff" (Y2)) would be -5.
But let's say the client didn't weigh-in on 10/1. The difference in weight is going to be 195. Or if they weighed-in on 10/1 but didn't on 10/8 it's going to read -200.
So I have two cells (say V2 & X2) that if one of them is blank, I want the "diff" to read "N/A" or at least leave the cell blank.

Start time is 2300 in A1
End time is 0100 (the next day) in B1
Difference should read 120 minutes in C1
I know this is possible, I think I've thought myself into circles on something that shouldn't be hard. Everything I've tried is giving me negative numbers and at some point I've tried using the +1 behind B1 to represent the next day.
Here are some of the formulas I've found throughout various posts and used.
=B1-A1+IF(A1>B1,1)
=B1+(A1>B1+1)-A2
=IF(A1

I am making a timesheet
I have
Start Time, End Time, Break, Hours Worked. Then on the right hand side of my spreadsheet I started playing around with the current time etc.
I want to work out the time left in a working day(like a countdown), based on a variable number of hours of work in a day (here it is 7 hours) excl. breaksie. 7+breaktimeso I need 7+break - 'hours worked' to get hours and mins left
I worked out how to get hours worked easily enough,
=J58-LOOKUP(TODAY(),A:A,D:D)-LOOKUP(TODAY(),A:A,B:B)
where J58 is a cell that has the current time in it and D and B are the columns with the break time and start time in them.
Hours Worked01:59:48Current Time11:49:4807:00:00Break time: 00:30:0007:30:00
I am trying to subtract the hours worked (1:59:48 in this case) from 7:30:00. The hours worked can be updated every second using F9.
I know it's something to do with negativer times because of dates etc but I don't know what to do to make it work.

Any way to enter in a total amount of time and then subtract it from a time shown. So for example:
I want to enter in a time of 26 hours, 10 minutes and 2 seconds: 72:10:02
I cannot find a format that allows me to enter the hours in excess of 24
Then I want to subtract it from a time of the day which will be entered as AM/PM: 02:40:02 AM
Then I want to show the result as a time of day: 00:30:00 AM
Lastly, I want to also show the amount of days adjustment: -1d, 00:03:00 AM
How this can be done through cell formulas?

I would really appreciate your help
I have a client who weants to work out the total number of hours (not minutes) between two times. I have managed to do that with no problem using the formula =IF(A2>B2,B2-A2+1,A2+B2). However, this is where the problem starts.
They want to multiply the number of hours with the number of men on the job, but the answer is wrong, and I cannot understand why. I have checked the formnat of the cell and changed it to see if that is the problem, but without success.
I have copied it below
Time inTime outNo hoursNo of MenTotal Man Hours
12:0003:001526
14:0018:00474

I'm trying to calculate the number of hours an agent works between the hours of 7AM and 7PM. Column B has their START time, Column C has their END time, Column D includes their LUNCH time, and Column E calculates the total number of hours worked (=IFERROR(SUM(C248-B248)-D248,"-").
I've created 3 additional columns (Column F = number of hours before 7:00, Column G = number of hours after 19:00, and Column H = Total excluded hours which represents the total number of hours an agent worked before 7AM or after 7PM.
I've attemped several different formulas, but they all give me '#########' in one cell or another.
Other formulas used:
=$F$243-B248
=ABS(F243-B249)
=-IF(B250>$F$243,-1,1)*MINUTE(IF(B250>$F$243,B250-$F$243,$F$243-B250))
My format is 13:30:55
I'd like for the result to be either a dash "-" or "0:00:00" if an agent's start time is after 7AM or end time is before 7PM.

I have a form for weather warnings that has time of issue in cell B19, and the time of occurrence in cell D19, and the times are in a 24hr military style time format (1600, or 1735, etc).
I need cell G19 to tell me the time difference between the two in hours and minutes, but here's the catch - if cell B19 has an earlier time, I need it to display the difference as a positive number, indicating that I issued the warning before the event actually occurred. If D19 is earlier, I need it to display in cell G19 as a negative number, indicating that the event occurred before I had a chance to issue the warning.

I saw this answered somewhere on here but really didn't understand.
I'm trying to set up a sheet for my hours worked for the week.
I have the total per day in H2 through H6 In I2 through I6 I have an accumulative total for the days, so assuming I work 8 hours a day, I2 would be 8:00 I3 would be 16:00 I4 would be 24:00.
In J2 through J5, I'd like to have the weekly accululative worked hours subtracted from 40 so that the total is what I have left work until I hit 40.

I am trying to calculate the difference between a scheduled start time and an actual start time. If the actual start time is greater than the scheduled start time a negative time (hh:mm:ss) should be returned. instead the cell is populated with #############....
I have tried to reformat using the custom formats, but the only options in excel 97 are for either standard numerics or £ (these return a minus figure).
I've had a look at the time functions but could not see a suitable one.
I'm sure there is a simple format solution to this.

I need 15 minutes removed from a difference in time, if the time span falls over 9:00 am through 9:15 am.
I'm inputting time like 8:30:00 in A1 and 10:30:00 in A2, then calculating the difference in A3 (2:00:00). Is there a way to remove 15 minutes from that 2:00:00, since it falls over 9 to 9:15?

I am trying to work out the response times to an event that my staff attend ( such as a fire alarm)
In C1 will be the time the event was called in, 23:55
In E1 will be the arrival time, 23:59
In F1 I want to show the time taken to arrive on site (response time)
This seems straightforward until the arrival time goes into the next day, such as 00:05 and this is when I have the problem
To make it more complicated, sometimes there is no need for an arrival time to be entered for some events ,with the end user leaving it blank or putting "NA" or "na" etc into the cell
I have tried the below formula which works to a point but leave me with an ######### error if the time is after midnight
=IF(E1="NA",0,IF(E1="n/a",0,E1-C1))

I have the formula in my spreadsheet to compute time. It works only if the time in B1 is greater then the time in A1. I would to know if there is a formula to compute time with either negative or postive answer. For example if a carrier was set to load their papers at 12:02pm and ended up loading early at 11:50am I would like the result in C1 to be -12 or (12).
Currently I am using the formula: =HOUR(B1-A1)*6+MINUTE(B1-A1). Like I said, it is all good until someone loads early and then I get a "#NUM!"
Are there any other formula's that I can use or is there a simple modification to the formula I am using?
