Text Mining In Excel?

Text mining in Excel? Is this possible? I'm think along the lines of sentiment analysis, part of speech tagging, that sort of thing. Are there add-ins for this, or libraries to hook into via VBA?

Mining Text Fields

Mar 23, 2009

How would I group and count the occurences of specific words in a text field? This is my first step in trying to develop a scoring method based on our notes.

If the sentences above were in the text field, I'd expect the words "a" and "in" to come back with a count of two while all other words would come back with a count of 1.

Data Mining

Dec 11, 2008

I have an excel spreadsheet that has the following type of data in the cells:
"11/09/08 20:29 JDS David/DBLD reports lights in the canopy are not working Christine/CBRE b4957204-1"

I need to know if there is a way to mine the B4957204-1 out of this, I have 300 cells with similiar text in that I need just a list of call #'s out of without all the other dribble.

Data Mining / Extraction From Web

Nov 15, 2011

There are websites available for data, but what is viable and crucial to me is finding a way to

1) Run a repeated process via a macro / vba script to allow for data input into the site
2) Once input into site, data is to be brought back into excel so that I can benchmark my product pricing vs my competition

There are 2 sites I am most interested in getting this information from specifically and although they do the same thing they have a couple of unique pros to them. they are the following

1) Findchips.com
2) eciaauthorized.com

The biggest pro to findchips.com is that they have a beta tool on their site that allows for "mass searches" to be performed as opposed to 1 part number at a time. Up to 100 results can be returned at a time, so although there would be multiple iterations doing it this way would save processing power as each step is not done line by line (p/n by p/n) as i could group them and send them and perform the operations that way.

Data Mining Multiple Workbooks

Jan 10, 2008

Engineering has given me 300 separate 2003 Excel Files. Each of these individual Excel files contains data I need for creating a list I have been tasked to do. Cells E3, K1, A6 and J2 in each Excel file contain the data I need for my list. Rather than manually data mining 300 separate Excel files for data I need from Cells E3, K1, A6 and J2, can this be done automatically with a macro?

I'm seeking for the Macro to automatically OPEN each individual Excel file, then copy the data from Cells E3, K1, A6, J2, and then paste this data into a list file with four columns. After the pasting is done, the macro will close the source data Excel file and move on to the next one. In the future I will have to repeat this task with probably 400 individual Excel files. Therefore, it will be great if the Macro didn't care how many Excel files required data mining.

Splitting A Large File Into Two And Mining The Data

Apr 17, 2008

I've been scouring the Internet for a few days now trying to get a macro working with varying degrees of success. It's driving me mad and I'm really hoping that someone out there can help me out. I'm trying to write a macro that will ...

1. Take a .xls file

2. Split the file in two

3. Take cells B2:B11 and paste them in to a csv file (to be called Upload1.csv) using the rows as column headers (i.e. B2:B11 now become A1:J1)

4. Take cells A13-J13 downwards (this file will have different numbers of rows each time it's generated) and paste them into a different csv file (to be called Upload2.csv) populating all the rows (except all rows in column I which are to be left blank) and all rows in Column J which are to contain the info in cell B7 of the original document.

5. In cell B11 of the original document I must only take the information that says MyAddress:xxxxx and discard all the other info

6. I must also loop through the second document until I find the words Total and copy everything UNTIL that row into the new document.

I know this probably sounds pretty awkward but in practice it's not that difficult to understand, it's probably the way that I've explained it

So far I've managed to take the original document and split it, populate both CSV files but I'm having problems with looping the macro until it sees the word Total and discards it and also populating the appropriate rows with the info from B7 ... I don't know how to make it populate only the rows that have info on them.

I've attached the original Excel file that is generated and also my attempt at the 2 csv files. I've also written in RED what needs to go where in each document.

Excel Text Search Through Different Types Of Text And Action Based On Text

Oct 14, 2008

1. Search an excel sheet "column" for a particular type of text and insert values based on that text (if found) in another column.

e.g I have column A1 to A10 with different types of text. I would like to search for the keyword "Risk is high" OR "Risk=High" for each cell in the column and insert a "1" if found beside it's corresponding "B" column. If not found, I would like to insert a "0".

So, if the text "Risk is high" OR "Risk=High" was only found in A6, I would like B6 to be "1". Rest of the values in the B column would be "0's", since the text was not found in any of the other cells.

Excel 2011 :: Find Multiple Text Strings In Another Text String

Mar 8, 2013

How do I use an Excel formula to find which (if any) multiple sets, each of up to 50 words, exist in a series of rows of a spreadsheet - if set A has one or more words found in a searched cell.

A positive result will return a specific value in the designated result cell. If none of the words in Set A is found in the searched cell, the formulae will repeat the test for the words in Set B, and so on.

After all 50 sets of words have been tested, the formula will move to the next cell in the searched column.

New words will be added to the sets of words continually as required.

Multiple words within sets are included in double quotes. Within each set of words there will be some n-tuples of words (i.e. 24 adjacent words) that contain one or more of the words in the set, but for which the formula will be required to return a negative result. Example: Set A = word 1, word2, word 3, "word1 word2 word3". (The words within a set could also be each entered in separate columns, as opposed to all included in a single cell.) The single column of text to be searched is about 10,000 rows.

I am wanting to use the above in a spreadsheet that contains data downloaded from a series of bank accounts to automatically allocate items of expenditure to one of 20 or so different categories of expenditure.

The formula will search the description field to find words that are used in the in the downloaded files from the various accounts to describe each transaction.

If a word describing travel expenditure (e.g. hotel, "holiday inn" but not "holiday travel") is found in the description of an expenditure item - the item cost will be allocated to the TRAVEL EXPENDITURE column, which is one of 20 or so different categories of expenditure.

Happy to consider a different solution if the task can be done better a different way.

Tried using a combination of INDEX/SEARCH/IF in Excel, but was not able to get a correct result. PS I am using Excel 2011 for Mac - which does not allow macros, so the solution needs to be entirely formula based.

Search Word For Text And Send Values Next To Text To Excel File

Apr 30, 2009

I am using Windows XP and Office 2003.

I am looking to automate a process where information is sent to someone in a text format and they in turn transfer that data to an excel file. It basically looks like this (but includes a lot more info):

Service Request #: 123456
Instrument Type: New Instrument
Lot/Serial #: 123456
SR Type: Product Complaint
Service Coverage: Maintenance Agreement

The info on the left (text preceding the colon) is always the same but the values following the colon can change. The excel file has all of the text before the colon and they just enter the information into the cells. I am looking to make it so that an Excel macro (or maybe a word/outlook macro) automatically scans the text document and sends this info to the exact same cells in excel every time.

The text file is actually a message from an Oracle database and I am not going to be able to make any changes to the way the data comes in.

Excel 2003 :: Take Specific Text From Cell And Copy It In New One (Text And / Or Words Position Varies)

Jan 17, 2013

I'm having a 6000+ records, (contacts DB) exported in Excel 2003 format from MS Outlook.

Except the "First" and "LastName", all other contact elements are in the field "Notes" (which is the BZ column according to the exported outlook layout) multiplied by 6469 (records in total)

Useful information are included !!!

I'll give an example of a record...

Column: BZ, Row: 543 says --> "2110000000-6989000000, 1TOK_TER:17-11-010(25 DAYS LESS),
KATERINA 25 (MANTAS KALNNNNN_HYPERTENSION)1000-150, W:95_105, , HR THE 16wks_US NEFRON OK,
NT OK_B EPIP OK(GOLF BALL)_KAMPILI ORIAKI(DIAITA)_DOPPLER OK, O+,TEST OK(TOX_), , , , , , "

Now, I want every time to take the part of the text says "TER:something..." (part of which is date, but not every time with the known format dd-mm-yyyy, as you see here is yyy, followed by something else, with parenthesis here and maybe more data) and copy it in a new cell..., e.g:CO Column, same Row...

Above and every field which by the way is formatted as General (and it is text mainly) are made by merging older excel fields where data laid here and there, that's why you see the commas...with the method of a module with the following code:

Function MyMerge(Rng As Range)
For Each Cell In Rng
Temp = Temp & Cell.Value & ", "
Next Cell
Temp = Mid(Temp, 1, Len(Temp) - 2)
MyMerge = Temp
End Function

Note1:Records with the above string (TER:dd-mm-yyy) are 771 from 6469.
Note2: As an alternative solution I can see an extraction of the TER:dd-mm-yyy string and the copy in a new place, like the:CO Column, same Row...

Importing Text File (excel Treat Row Of Text As Number)

Dec 1, 2007

I created a vb macro to open a text file then process the file then close the file. Here is my problem:

Problem: THe text file has rows of data in it as follows

5155111111551511111111111511111111111111111

This row of text gets converted to

5.16E+42

because excel treats the row of text as a number but i dont want it to do this transition.

When i save the file and then reopen it using say NOTEPAD i see 5.16E+42 and not the long string of text.

Excel 2013 :: Check Cell For Text And Return Corresponding Text In Adjacent Cell?

Jan 28, 2014

I have 2 tabs in a 2013 workbook. Inventory Receipts and lookups. One of the Data verification lookups I have is a drop down list in each cell in Column B (eg: Cat, Dog, Mouse) In the lookups tab I have another cell range containing the sounds (eg: Meow, Bark, Squeak).

What I am trying to acheive is, if B2 contains Cat, then return Meow in B3, if B2 contains Dog then return bark in b3 and if B2 contains Mouse return squeak in B3. Ideally I would like the formula to return the text from my lookup sheet (eg: 'Lookups'!C2,'Lookups'!C3,'Lookups'!C4). So depending on which option they choose from my animal drop down list .. the correct noise would automatically fill in.

Excel 2007 :: Match Partial Text When Partial Text Is Not Exact

May 20, 2014

This is for Excel 2007,I have two sets of model numbers. One set is the full model numbers of the units we use, and the other is an abbreviated form used to lookup up certificate numbers. I need a way to match these up so I can use one set of search criteria to find out if there is a match. Here is an example of what I need to match with a partial text match:

H,AE35(6,9)36+TD and AE3563636D145C2501AP
H,RE36(6,9)36 and RE36936C145B2505AP

if I could do this with a formula that matches multiple items at the same time (ie; if A & B & C match=true) with the above model number being one of those items (certificate numbers are issued for sets, but the other model numbers are fine). If that's not possible, a one time VBA run to match all of the abbreviations at once would also work. If these items are matched up with a one time VBA, the VBA needs to account for their being more than one match for each abbreviation depending on the size of the unit.

So H,AE35(6,9)36+TD could be matched to:
AE3563636D145C2501AP
AE3563636D175C2501AP
AE3563636D210C2501AP

Excel 2003 :: How To Count Cells With Instances Text Not Instances Of Text

Aug 17, 2012

I'm using WinXP with Excel 2003 - I have a column of highway sign description data (16k+ rows).

Example:

Curve Arrow Right
Curve Arrow Left
Turn Arrow
Reversing Curve Arrow Right
Winding Road Arrow(plus many more unique entries)

I'm using SUM and COUNTIF to total the number of times "Curve", "Reversing", "Turn" and "Winding" appear in the column.

My formula is:
Code: =SUM(COUNTIF($F11:$F16196,{"*CURVE*","*REVERSING*","*TURN*","*WINDING*"}))

Which works great EXCEPT what I really want is the number of cells with any of those key words, not the total count of those words. The example above should be 5, but since row four contains more that 1 of the key words I'm getting 6.

Excel 2013 :: Extract Date And Time Info From A Text Cell That Contains Text And Date And Time

Jul 19, 2014

I am using Excel 2013. Anyway, the first issue is that I need to pull a date and a time period from text. So, for example, if I see something like Sunday Prime Time 7/6/14 8:37PM, I would want to pull ONLY the "7/6/14 8:37PM" out of it. Each text box could potentially be different, so it might not always be in the same format as "Sunday Prime Time 7/6/14 8:37PM" it might only show just the date and/or the time without all the extra text i.e. 7/6/14 8:37PM. Some of the cells will have text, others might only have just the time or even just the date and the time. The only thing that I am worrying about in each cell is extracting just the date and time. If this is too much to ask of excel, I would be ok with extracting ONLY the time - 8:37PM and not the date, but I would much rather be able to get both the time and date.

THEN, onto part two of my question. After I would pull the dates and times, I need to compare them with each other. So, when I have the same date with two separate times on that date, I need to write a formula to show if those times on that date are less than 30 minutes apart. So, if I have 6 times on 7/6/14, I need to know if any of them are less than 30 minutes apart.

I would need to have the formula say something like "Problem" if the times on 7/6/14 would be 5:30PM, 5:48PM, 7:00PM, 8:00PM, 8:15PM, and 9:00Pm for example. I would like to see the word "Problem" since 5:30PM and 5:48Pm is only 18 minutes apart, and "Problem" after 8:15PM since that is only 15 minutes past the 8:00PM which is obviously under 30 minutes. The times that are more than 30 minutes apart such as 7:00PM and 9:00PM for example are more than 30 minutes apart from any of the other times that were extracted.

How To Fix Numbers When Imported Into Excel As Text

Apr 10, 2009

I immediately began having problems with formulas and pivot tables when I began importing data from an offsite postgreSQL database. For example, "countif" and "sumproduct" formulas invariably return values of 0. I can create pivot tables from the imported data, but nothing with a numerical value will group.

After fighting with this for literally hours, I finally noticed that all numbers in the columns were on the left side of the column meaning that the numerical data is being imported into Excel as text, even though the columns in the spreadsheet into which the data is imported are in number format.

Any way either to import numbers as numbers from the postgreSQL database, or to convert text to numbers after the data is imported.

Excel 2010 :: How To Put Number As Text

Sep 13, 2013

I need to put a number as a text. It is 14 digits long (35071245130000). If I change it from a number to a text, it re-formats to a scientific number (3.50712E+6).

I can not use the ' in front of the number because it makes all of my vlookups mess up.

The reason I need this changed is because I have a several databases/excel spreadsheets that are being linked through Access. The number is stored as text in the other databases. Because of this, the spreadsheet with the number is not recognizing the number version and the text version as the same.

How to make excel show this full number when formatted as text?

Getting Excel To Count Text Entries

Jul 18, 2014

I want to learn how to program excel to do this :

1) Type in a text data in a predesignated entry box

2) Excel automatically inserts that text into a table

3) If that text is already in the table, then adds a counter next to it (or increases the counter by one)

4) Excels then clears the text data in the entry box

Basically, I want to tabulate the number of times a specific entry comes up, and it would be much faster if I can just type it in, press enter, and let excel do the rest. It would be ideal if I can also add a date to that entry, so the data table comes up to something like a date vs the entries table, and the intersection would be the number of times each entry comes up on that day.
