Using A Countif Function For Text String Data

Mar 10, 2008

I'm currently working on a spreadsheet (see attached) which will have both numeric and text string data. This will be sorted by calender month and linked to another spreadsheet.

Could someone please list 2 functions for me.

The 1st would allow act like a filter allowing only data to be counted for a selected month from a drop down list.

The 2nd allows a counting of pre-set (drop down list) text strings to be counted.

Sorry seems a bit complicated and really I should have either a created a pivot report or used access but I'd like to continue with Excel for this exercise.

Text() Function :: How To Prohibit A String Value

I have a problem when using the function of text(). I set "=TEXT(SUM(A1:A5), 0) + 5" in Cell A6. Assume the answer of SUM(A1:A5) is 10, the result in A6 will be 15.

Use COUNTIF Function To Retrieve Data To A Report Tab On Workbook?

Jul 13, 2014

I am trying to use COUNTIF function to retrieve data to a "Report" tab on my workbook.I need it to be count if as I have 2 criteria whether or not the value in the cell should be counted toward the sum (one is text basically saying "Y" and other the date). Now the formula worked fine when use hard data such as this:

=COUNTIFS('Inspection Report'!$B$3:$B$1048576,"*" & "06/05/2014" & "*",'Inspection Report'!E3:E1048576,"Y")

OUTCOME: 47 (which is correct)

See how I used the date there, I typed it myself. However the end user should not be able to have access to the formula, so I used a cell with drop down list and the date is stored there. So following the logic, my new formula should be this:

=COUNTIFS('Inspection Report'!$B$3:$B$1048576,"*" & C2 & "*",'Inspection Report'!E3:E1048576,"Y")

OUTCOME: 0 (which is incorrect)

how the date is stored. By following my logic this should work as the cell only holds a string value and should be used like this in to calculate the result. if I need to use only the value of the cell in a formula like this should there be any conversion so excel understands what I am trying to do?

VBA Function For Finding A Character In A Text String

Is there a function in VBA that is similar to either the FIND function or SEARCH function in Excel? The arguments for the FIND function in Excel are FIND(find_text, within_text, [position]).

I have a text string in VBA ("$A1:$D$13") that I want to be able to identify the first "$" and then later the ":". I'm getting tripped up on the 3rd line of code. Thanks a million.

Sub page_set_print_area()

x = ActiveSheet.PageSetup.PrintArea

Extract Text From Given Point In Text String When Data Points Do Not Share Given

Jul 9, 2014

I have a set of task descriptions that I am attempting to trend on. Some of these (Column B) have the customer's name added to the description; others do not. I need to be able to make a list of task names (ColumnA), removing the name from the text string.

The formula I am using is [=LEFT(B3,FIND("for",B3)-2)].

The problem I am having is when the description does not contain the "for" built into the formula, I get "VALUE" error. What adjustment can I make to the formula to pull over the Description if the "for" does not appear in the text string?

VBA / Using String From Input Box As Criteria For CountIF

Aug 19, 2014

I'm trying to enter text (a staff members initials) into an Input Box so that the initials are then used as the citeria in a CountIF formula entered by VBA

A simplified version of the code I am using is:

Dim staffname As String
staffname = InputBox(Prompt:="You name please.", _
Title:="ENTER INITIALS", Default:="MC")
Range("H9").FormulaR1C1 = "=COUNTIF(RC[-3]:RC[-1],"" & staffname & "")"

The issue is getting the staffname string to be entered within the formula.

What is the correct combination of "" & to enable this to work?

The “x’s” represent text which is unique to each row. what the formula I need to extract the number (1.23456) at the start of the string? To complicate things the number may be reported to any number of decimal places, so the formula needs to be able to extract the first block of digits at the start of each row and report it as a number that can be used in calculations.

Extract Data From Text String In Cell

Apr 13, 2012

I have a worksheet with over 10,000 records. The column that lists where a person is willing to relocate can have up to 60 city/state entries in one cell.

Here is an example of what appears in one cell - this is exactly how it appears:

ASAI Los Angeles (XX , CA
DFO Pacific (XX ONLY), CA
DFO Pacific Area Analyst Laguna Niguel (XX ONLY), CA
SAI Los Angeles (XX ONLY), CA
Ldr Los Angeles El Segundo POD (XX ONLY), CA
Ldr Los Angeles Long Beach POD (XX ONLY), CA
Ldr Los Angeles POD (XX ONLY), CA
Senior Ldr (XXXX) Washington (XX ONLY), DC

What I need to do is be able to sort on city and state, so I wanted to be able to extract and separate the city and state. I tried using a find/replace (CTRL J) to enter a semicolon between each entry and thought I could do text to columns to separate, but that doesn't work.

How I could extract this information? Notice that the first entry is missing ) - that is throughout the records.

COUNTIF Function After SUBSTITUTE Function

Jan 3, 2012

I am using COUNTIF functions with Defined Name lists to quickly determine if a certain number is on a list. As a backdrop, I am using Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) numbers and attempting to somewhat streamline chemical approval for a small company. CAS numbers are often in the format of XX-XX-X with varied amounts of numbers. One of the defined lists however does not have dashes.

Thus, I am using cell B1 to enter the CAS# once and then for each list having a column to itself with an associated worksheet with a defined name list. Most of the columns have the function =B1 with the conditional formatting of =COUNTIF(definedname,BX) and formatted to turn red if the chemical is on the list. This is working for all of the columns except for the list that needs the dashes removed. For instance, CAS 64-67-1 is put in B1 and cell B5 has the formula =SUBSTITUTE(B1,"-","") which brings the number to 64671 which matches the number in my defined name list. However, the cell will not turn red. What am I missing?

Using Countif Function For Certain Array

May 2, 2014

I want to use the countif function for a certain array. The range is set by another cell which is made up out of a percentile of an entire row.

The problem is is that excel doesn't see the value it displays so i continuously get a value of 0 in the countif cell. If i fill in the range by hand, which is exactly the same range as the outcome of the percentile the countif cell does give the correct value.

So in short the problem is i guess that the countif cell does not recognize the value because this value is made up by a formula.

COUNTIF Function Across More Than 1 Column

Dec 19, 2012

How do I setup a COUNTIF function so that it 'searches/uses' more than one column for results.

Example: I have a spreadsheet with 20 columns - starting at A1 to T1 - and ending at A100 toT100. I want to use the COUNTIF function to 'search' all of these from A1/T1 to A100/T100 and tell me how many times the number 21 appears across that range of cells.

This COUNTIF function will reference data on a sheet called 50 - so at the moment my current single colum COUNTIF looks like this -=COUNTIF('50'!A1:A100,21) - and it works fine for one colum, but I need to search 20 columns.
