Workbook Close Stops QueryTable Refresh
Aug 22, 2006
I have a bunch of workbooks that are used to capture information about implants used in surgical cases. I use a small VBA process each morning to update a querytable which contains all of the core patient information for future cases, however it is not working properly. The code goes through the process OK, or so it appears, opens and closes each sheet, and saves them appropriately, but the query table doesn't seem to refresh no matter what I do.
Sub RevisedRefresh()
Dim lCount As Long
Dim wbResults As Workbook
Dim wbCodeBook As Workbook
Application. ScreenUpdating = False
Application.DisplayAlerts = False
Application.EnableEvents = False
On Error Resume Next
Set wbCodeBook = ThisWorkbook
With Application.FileSearch
.NewSearch
.LookIn = "G:SHSTheatreCommonReceptionImplants"
.FileType = msoFileTypeExcelWorkbooks
If .Execute > 0 Then
For lCount = 1 To .FoundFiles.Count
Set wbResults = Workbooks.Open(Filename:=.FoundFiles(lCount), UpdateLinks:=0)...............................

I have data that daily needs to be refreshed and printed to pdf.
I figure the simplest way to do this would be to task schedule the workbook to open daily. Then on open it will refresh the data, print it after all data has been refreshed and close the workbook.
I set it up originally without the need to print so I have all the queries set to refresh when opening the file, however when I now try and put the code to print to pdf on the workbook open event it runs before the queries are finished running. (Query notes: queries were created through Microsoft query, and are accessing a MySQL database queries set to refresh when opening the file queries set to enable background refresh).

I'm trying to combine 2 sets of code that I have searched other threads for.Both use the OnTime code to trigger events after 5 and 10sec.
My problem is that the workbook won't close correctly and keeps re-opening on the refresh event. I understand both events need to be passed to the dTime variable, but I am obviously doing something wrong. I will include the code as I'm sure its something obvious;
Private Sub Workbook_BeforeClose(Cancel As Boolean)
On Error Resume Next
Application.OnTime dTime, "Sort", , False
If Cancel = False Then Application.OnTime dTime, "RefreshIt", , False
On Error Goto 0
End Sub
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
Run "RefreshIt"
Application.OnTime Now + TimeValue("00:10:00"), "Sort"
End Sub
Public dTime As Date
Sub Sort()
dTime = Time + TimeValue("00:00:10")
Application.OnTime dTime, "Sort"
Range("A6:M10").Select
Selection.Sort Key1:=Range("I6"), Order1:=xlDescending, Header:=xlGuess, _
OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom, _
DataOption1:=xlSortNormal
Range("B2").Select
End Sub
Sub RefreshIt()
Sheets("Text").Range("A7:F38").QueryTable.Refresh
dTime = Time + TimeValue("00:00:05")
Application.OnTime dTime, "RefreshIt"
End Sub
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

See the attached spreadsheet with a macro that gets the querytable in Sheet1. In sheet2 there is a formula to get one of the balances from the querytable result. Is there a way to find the balance on sheet2 from the querytable at runtime so that I do not have to download it to Sheet1? Then I could do away with Sheet1 altogether.

We're using XP Pro using Excel 07
The background is there are about 40 people who use a Excel based program that contains a pivot and a bunch of other tools that they use on a regular basis, this set of tools has a version number. In this excel workbook, it has a function that looks on the network drive that we have and checks the local version vs the version on our network drive, if its wrong, then the user gets a popup stating your tools are out of date, would you like to update, then they click yes and I have these lines of code
Public Function GetNewTools()
Dim MyFullName As String
'Turn off alerts
Application.DisplayAlerts = False
'Open the new version of tools
Workbooks.Open Filename:= _
"Network DriveUpdate.xlsm"
End Function
The update file has this code that executes on fileopen in the thisworkbook section by calling the following sub
The main issue we're running into is near the very end, the code never makes it to "TEST 2". After the first workbooks close, the code just stops running. No crashes, errors, freezes, anything. It just stops running and never makes it to the second msg box.

I currently have a spreadsheet that has data connections to a file on a shared drive. On opening the file I have it update the data connections so that the data needed is always correct. The file I use is to be distributed out to work colleagues to use and on testing it works really well apart from if you have the file open and somebody tried to open the original file where the data is pulled from for the connection. It says it currently in use by 'another user'.
Is there any code to add to workbook_open that will close/disable the data connection links once the data has been updated? The code I currently have is this:
VB:
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
ActiveWorkbook.RefreshAll
Application.Wait Now + TimeValue("00:00:02")
Userform1.Show
End If
End Sub
What this basically does is gives it time to refresh the data connections and show a progress userform. The only thing is the connections stay live and I don't want that as the connection file is then locked. I'm hoping its something simple like ActiveWorkbook.CloseDataConnection added in after the userform has been shown (or something along them lines ). Also the data connections would have to be able to reconnect on open so that they can refresh again.

I have a batch script which runs the following line to open my excel sheet:
start m:exportad.xls
when this sheet opens it automatically refreshes from a csv file.
The problem is that I want this sheet to open, refresh and close. To close Excel I have been using the taskkill command in my batch script, but I have found that using this method doesn't update the sheet properly - the sheet only updates properly if I close Excel in the correct way, but this means manual input and I want this to be automatic.

I am using Excel 2003.
It’s been working perfectly up until around an hour ago. However, now when I close Excel, I get compile errors.
These compile errors seem to be because Excel is trying to access controls in the workbook after it has closed. Since the workbook is closed, VBA can no longer ‘see’ the controls, and therefore it thows up errors.
I’m also getting a similar error on a Worksheets("DataExplorer").unprotect line, which seems to be because the worksheet isn’t there after closing.
These errors only occur when I close the whole excel application using the big cross in the top right. If I just close the workbook (using the smaller cross just below the big cross in the top right of excel), it doesn’t throw up these errors.
Just to clarify: all of the code runs perfectly when Excel is open. The errors are being thrown up for lines of code which run without problem until Excel is closed.

I am using Task scheduler to open a workbook which has some connections to an ODBC that are set to refresh on opening.
I need to automate:-
One of the sheets needs to recalculate for the sort by ascending code to run on the sheet.
Save and then close after say 2 minutes of opening (to give the ODBC connections enough time to finish).

I work in Excel with a VBA script. The purpose of my script is that every 5 seconds a procedure will be executed. This works well. If my workbook is not active, it does not work. Or when I work with another workbook. Or when I work with another program. Then the script will stop to execute. It looks like a break. I have tried several scripts that have the same effect. I want the script continues normally with execution.

I am a novice at excel macro programming. My Excel 2000 macro inexplicably stops after the line: Workbooks.Open Filename:=stAddrFullname, ReadOnly:=True
1) I know that the remainder of the code is not executed because a breakpoint on the following line is never reached.
2) I know that this line is executed because the stAddrFullname workbook is clearly opened and is displayed when the code stops prematurely.
3) No error message is displayed and I have no 'OnError' instructions in the code.
4) (This is the bit I really don't understand). If I put a Breakpoint in the macro anywhere in the function preceding the "Workbooks.Open" statement, the macro reaches the Breakpoint and then runs through to completion with no problem. When I remove the breakpoint, it reverts to stopping as soon as it has opened the Workbook.
5) The stAddrFullname workbook has no macros in it.

I have a simple list of data (Name, Room, etc.) in a spreadsheet. Each day I click on the spreadsheet tab and create a "copy" and (move to end). This creates a spreadsheet for the next day's data.
My problem is that the macro I use to sort this data never works in the newly created spreadsheet within the same workbook. As usual, I'm sure it is something relatively simple that I am overlooking.

I have a Macro that is stored in a specific workbook,"Projection Modeler.xls" the last line performed in this macro is the close workbooks without saving chages(this needs to be done due to the way this macro was written, and it would take too long to rewrite). If I would then like to reopen this workbook, and then rerun this macro, can I do this from inside the current macro (in a new sub routine, for instance), or do I have to write a macro outside of the workbook and then open the workbook and call the routine?

I need to leave excel open as the macro created a 3rd workbook which the user will need.

I have a very brief question
dlgAnswer = Application.Dialogs(xlDialogOpen).Show
Selection.Copy
Windows("Derivative YK pricing Mod G.xls").Activate
Columns("B:B").Select
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValuesAndNumberFormats, Operation:= _
xlNone, SkipBlanks:=False, Transpose:=False
Range("C5").Select
Application.CutCopyMode = False
Windows("EXPORT1.xls").Activate
ActiveWindow.Close
As you can see, I open a workbook with the dlgAnswer, I was wondering how I could close that opened workbook
Currently I have
Windows("EXPORT1.xls").Activate
ActiveWindow.Close
however the workbook will not always be called export1.xls, I want it to close whichever one I opened earlier.

I am trying to run a macro inside a Worksheet_Change event.
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Excel. Range)
If Not Application.Intersect(Target, Range("Mon_Data")) Is Nothing Then
If Target.Value > 0 Then
Sub Refresh_PivotTables()
'
' Refresh_PivotTables Macro
' Macro recorded 10/1/2008 by JackChappers
'
as you can see, i put the macro within the worksheet_Change event so that, when data is changed on another sheet (target.Value >0), the Macro is run (the macro, by the way, refreshes some Pivot Tables).
The refresh Refresh_PivotTables Macro works on it's own, but when i use it like this, i get the message:
"Compile error:
Ambiguous name detected: Worksheet_Change"
If it makes any difference, i also have another Worksheet_Change event above performing another action. I think that may be the problem, if it is, how do i run them both without the error?

I've developed a complex dictator application, which pretty much takes over the entire Application object. During beta testing, I've had some user complaints that, once my program is started, they can't access their existing workbooks.
In order to remedy this situation, I'm trying to construct a front-loader workbook, which will automatically determine whether or not to start a new instance (application) of Excel. If the user already has a workbook open (i.e. "MiscBook.xls"), the front-loader will start a new application; otherwise, it will just use the existing application.
My "Auto_Open" code for the front-loader workbook is shown below:
Sub Auto_Open()
Dim xlApp As Excel.Application
Dim wbkTemp As Workbook, wbkApp As Workbook
Dim lCount As Long
Dim vTemp As Variant
The code works fine, but I have a minor gripe: every time a new application is created ("Else" in the "If-Else" above), the screen doesn't appear to refresh. In other words, I get a new window (instance of Excel), but none of my custom-defined buttons and menus show up. If I hover my mouse over their intended locations, they "appear" one at a time.
I'm just wondering - is there something I can do to prevent this behavior, or "refresh" the new application window upon startup? I'm essentially looking for something like "Userform.Repaint", only for a brand-new Excel Application object.

I have a csv archive file on a remote server that I am accessing with excel. The problem, if I use QueryTable, all info is placed in the first column. If I use the workbook.open method, the info is placed in the proper cells, but it is in a seperate workbook.
So, how do I get the workbook.open results, except in the active workbook/worksheet? Or, is there a way to QueryTable (my preferred method) and get it into seperate cells?
Here is my
Sub RemoteFile()
Dim csvfile As String
On Error Goto ErrRemoteFile
Call CreateBatchFile
Call CreateScriptFile

I snagged this code out from another project I wrote, and it works fine in that one, but doesn't in the new project.
What I want, is when the person presses the exit button, it will save whatever was done, its running as a form printer and database. The code below is the code for my exit button.
Private Sub CommandButton4_Click()
Dim sAnswer As String
Dim i As Integer
' ****************
' ** Exit Button**
' ****************
When it gets to "If ActiveWorkbook.Saved = False Then" it does put the question out "Do you want to save changes" I click Yes and it doesn't save it.. I have tried both activeworkbook and thisworkbook ... I copied the code and verified all is good to go..

I have the following code which works but is slow. All the code is the same except the address part and the destination range. Any help simplifying would be great. Also, every time I run the sub it asks me if I want to replace the destination cells. Is there any code to circumvent that? Lastly, although the second and third query requests have a different destination range, excel shifts the previous query to the right, hence first command after final query request.

When a QueryTable is refreshed and the number of rows it returns changes, I *expect* that a corresponding Named Range should be automatically resized. The sheet-level Named Range (same name as the QueryTable) should cover the query result's header row and all returned data rows.
But now I've got a Named Range that seems to have become disconnected from its QueryTable. The query returns fewer rows but the Named Range stays the same size.
This is even more perplexing because the aberrant QueryTable is right next to another QueryTable that is behaving normally. The Data Range properties of both are identical.

How do I handle URL connections - such as logging into a web application?
Example 1
When I use .Refresh BackgroundQuery:= False and there is a problem connecting, Excel hangs ... cannot Ctrl-Break ... only option is to kill Excel (and lose changes).
global QT As QueryTable
Set QT = ActiveSheet.QueryTables.Add(Connection:="URL;" & vLoginURL,
[Code]....
Now, if it's still refreshing, it's ok. But if not, it gets stuck on .Refreshing with run time error 424.
Ideally I want to use .Refresh BackgroundQuery:= False as I am calling a number of urls. I just need to provide an "out" when the url fails and hangs on .Refresh BackgroundQuery:= False

I have a querytable running on my sql database. In the query I have a trimleft function because the numbers are stored with several proceeding blank spaces. When I execute the query through my macro, everything works fine, except I can't average or sum the results. They can be multiplied, divided, etc, but not averaged or summed (they just show as zero on summing, which makes the average DIV/0). The really strange part is that if I select a number and go to the formula bar and hit delete at the beginning of the number (which actually deletes nothing), the number is suddenly capable of actually performing as a number. I assume this has something to do with how the querytable is returning my results, but does anyone have an idea for a workaround for this issue?

I have the below code in a macro attached to a button. Basically, if i choose yes to the message box at the beginning then the macro copies the all the cells on the sheet 'selections', opens up a new workbook, pastes into here, deletes some unused cells, rows and columns, then sends the sheet as an attachment on an e-mail.
What i also need to do is when i have sent the e-mail, the macro closes the new workbook without saving changes.
