Close Data Connections After Refresh
May 3, 2013
I currently have a spreadsheet that has data connections to a file on a shared drive. On opening the file I have it update the data connections so that the data needed is always correct. The file I use is to be distributed out to work colleagues to use and on testing it works really well apart from if you have the file open and somebody tried to open the original file where the data is pulled from for the connection. It says it currently in use by 'another user'.
Is there any code to add to workbook_open that will close/disable the data connection links once the data has been updated? The code I currently have is this:
VB:
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
ActiveWorkbook.RefreshAll
Application.Wait Now + TimeValue("00:00:02")
Userform1.Show
End If
End Sub
What this basically does is gives it time to refresh the data connections and show a progress userform. The only thing is the connections stay live and I don't want that as the connection file is then locked. I'm hoping its something simple like ActiveWorkbook.CloseDataConnection added in after the userform has been shown (or something along them lines ). Also the data connections would have to be able to reconnect on open so that they can refresh again.

I am using Task scheduler to open a workbook which has some connections to an ODBC that are set to refresh on opening.
I need to automate:-
One of the sheets needs to recalculate for the sort by ascending code to run on the sheet.
Save and then close after say 2 minutes of opening (to give the ODBC connections enough time to finish).

I have a batch script which runs the following line to open my excel sheet:
start m:exportad.xls
when this sheet opens it automatically refreshes from a csv file.
The problem is that I want this sheet to open, refresh and close. To close Excel I have been using the taskkill command in my batch script, but I have found that using this method doesn't update the sheet properly - the sheet only updates properly if I close Excel in the correct way, but this means manual input and I want this to be automatic.

I have a bunch of workbooks that are used to capture information about implants used in surgical cases. I use a small VBA process each morning to update a querytable which contains all of the core patient information for future cases, however it is not working properly. The code goes through the process OK, or so it appears, opens and closes each sheet, and saves them appropriately, but the query table doesn't seem to refresh no matter what I do.
Sub RevisedRefresh()
Dim lCount As Long
Dim wbResults As Workbook
Dim wbCodeBook As Workbook
Application. ScreenUpdating = False
Application.DisplayAlerts = False
Application.EnableEvents = False
On Error Resume Next
Set wbCodeBook = ThisWorkbook

.FileType = msoFileTypeExcelWorkbooks

For lCount = 1 To .FoundFiles.Count
Set wbResults = Workbooks.Open(Filename:=.FoundFiles(lCount), UpdateLinks:=0)...............................

I'm trying to combine 2 sets of code that I have searched other threads for.Both use the OnTime code to trigger events after 5 and 10sec.
My problem is that the workbook won't close correctly and keeps re-opening on the refresh event. I understand both events need to be passed to the dTime variable, but I am obviously doing something wrong. I will include the code as I'm sure its something obvious;
Private Sub Workbook_BeforeClose(Cancel As Boolean)
On Error Resume Next
Application.OnTime dTime, "Sort", , False
If Cancel = False Then Application.OnTime dTime, "RefreshIt", , False
On Error Goto 0
End Sub
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
Run "RefreshIt"
Application.OnTime Now + TimeValue("00:10:00"), "Sort"
End Sub
Public dTime As Date
Sub Sort()
dTime = Time + TimeValue("00:00:10")
Application.OnTime dTime, "Sort"
Range("A6:M10").Select
Selection.Sort Key1:=Range("I6"), Order1:=xlDescending, Header:=xlGuess, _
OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom, _
DataOption1:=xlSortNormal
Range("B2").Select
End Sub
Sub RefreshIt()
Sheets("Text").Range("A7:F38").QueryTable.Refresh
dTime = Time + TimeValue("00:00:05")
Application.OnTime dTime, "RefreshIt"
End Sub
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

I have a workbook which uses data connections to our sage accounts product. Everytime i open the sheet i get the "Data Connections have been disabled" security message, and need to go in and enable them. Is there any way of enabling the data connections by default? I only want to do it for this one workbook - i still want to be prompted when i open other workbooks.

I have a workbook with multiple worksheets and over 25 Data Connections using MS Query to connect to different tables in an SQL Server database.
The problem is that the SQL Server database is now being moved to a different server. The database name and the schema of the tables will be unchanged. Only the server name needs to be changed from XXXXX to YYYYY.
I have been unable to find a way to successfully edit the data connections in Excel 2003. A web search produced one potential option. However, that did not work for me very well. Thought the code is designed to cycle through all tablequeries and pivotqueries, the change is only made to one of the data connections. Here is the option I tried:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816562
Note that it is very easy to edit data connections in Excel 2007. So I also tried opening the .xls file in Excel 2007. I used the Data Connections button under the Data tab in the ribbon and was successful in editing the connections to point to the new server. However, the graphs used to display the queried data behave weird. The "format axis" settings and chart sizes change. In general, default display settings for charts seems to differ between Excel 2003 and 2007.
I used Excel 2007 to only edit the data connections and saved the workbook in the original .xls format

My issue is we have a remote office, using an access DB which links to an Excel file. We sometimes send the files to other people to make changes, but the link is then broken (it was a network location).
You can just change it manually, or accept the many prompts that come up, but it needs doing at each end, each time.
I thought I'd do a routine to change the connection paths, this is what I have...
Code:
Sub alan()
Dim i As Long
Dim cnt As Long
Dim modtext As String, modfile As String
Dim modrange As String, OldPath As String, NewPath As String
OldPath = "\192.168.1.100MultimediaCommissioning Folder"
NewPath = "C:matts"
[Code] ...
I added the sourcedatafile part to the routine afterwards, because the connection string part worked fine. But I now get Run-time error '1004' Application-defined or object-defined error...

I have data that daily needs to be refreshed and printed to pdf.
I figure the simplest way to do this would be to task schedule the workbook to open daily. Then on open it will refresh the data, print it after all data has been refreshed and close the workbook.
I set it up originally without the need to print so I have all the queries set to refresh when opening the file, however when I now try and put the code to print to pdf on the workbook open event it runs before the queries are finished running. (Query notes: queries were created through Microsoft query, and are accessing a MySQL database queries set to refresh when opening the file queries set to enable background refresh).

While making my first foray into defining external connections (to an Oracle database) I ended up with an "Existing Connection" that reports "File could not be opened. It is either damaged or the file format is not valid. Try opening the application that created it and saving to a new file." Followed by "Unable to open or read this connection file. Either the file has been damaged or the file format is not valid."
Ok, fine. So how do I delete it? There seems to be no option for that in the "Existing Connections" dialog. A search for a *.odc or *.udcx file doesn't turn up anything with the name of this connection. A search of the registry doesn't turn up anything.

I am trying to write a macro to delete all connections from a very large excel file
I created this file by using a Macro to extract data from a external data source (url's listed on a sheet)
The issue is the 1000+ connections on this file make it next to impossible to operate
I cannot recreate the file
macro to delete all connections in all sheets in a given work book.

Macro used :
Sub Dump()
Dim myURL
Sheets("Sheet1").Select
ActiveCell.Offset(1, 0).Select
myURL = Worksheets("Sheet1").Range(ActiveCell.Address).Text
Sheets("Sheet2").Select
Range("A65536").Select

I'm trying to use vba to create an offline backup file for a sheet that is linked to an access database. the code I have is simple and worked for a file that is not linked to any database.
Code:
Sheets("Data").Select
Sheets("Data").Copy
Application.DisplayAlerts = False
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:=myfilename
Application.DisplayAlerts = True
Now that I insert it into the actual file, which is linked to the database I get an error. I also tried to move the display alert up, before the select instructions, but also this does not work. this is not what I wanted since I want this file not to possibly connect to any database.

I've tried to remove connections after saves and have been unsuccessful.
HTML Code:
' Delete Additional Connections
' If ActiveWorkbook.Connections.Count > 0 Then
' For i = 1 To ActiveWorkbook.Connections.Count
' ActiveWorkbook.Connections.Item(1).Delete
' Next i
' Else
' MsgBox ActiveWorkbook.Connections.Count
'
' End If
HTML Code:
' Remove named ranges
For Each nm In ActiveWorkbook.Names
nm.Delete
Next nm
I've tried both of these and the Excel file is still attached with XML to the query table. I get an error message saying the format is different then if you click okay it shows its connected to the database still. Is there an aggressive command that will severe all connections before saving? What commands to run to stop this connection after save to another workbook?

I have a query with ODBC connection to a SQL database. This query's parameter is linked to a cell. The resultant data is the source for a pivot table. I want to refresh the pivot table, when the query is run. I've tried using the cell that triggers the query....but the problem is that the query takes about 10 seconds to run. By the time the query returns new data....the pivot has already refreshed. I need it to refresh AFTER the query is complete.
I tried adding a cell that sums up the data from the query...thinking when THAT changes (due to updated data), to trigger the pivot refresh. Problem is that I don't know the trigger for when the sum cell changes (ie....formula change, not typed in.)

vba in excel 2013 pivot table that updates from an online CRM rows are a to h and it can be any number of rows. What I am trying to do is track progress. In column f values indicate probability for success 10 25 45 90, which can go up or down. The pivot table is refreshed to get the latest values from CRM. the update is handled by a connection to the crm not in the vba.
So far I been researching methods to conditionally format values that went up, down or remained the same since the last refresh with up down and across arrows. I have managed to piece together what I think should work but alas it is not. So I have come to you internet.
My code first clears any formatting and goes down the column avoiding null or empty cells, comparing the values in column f to values in column j.
I have 3 conditions greater than, less than or equal to, and would like add an icon for each based on the result of the comparison.
Finally when it finishes the column the code copies the current values in the pivot table column f to column j outside the pivot table which i hope to be able to hide once the cf works. The code is below

The part of the macro which imports the data was simply recorded and very slightly modified. I've included it below... but what I'd like to do once the data has been imported is delete the connection.

I have an excel file with a link to an access database. when you open the excel file it prompts to refresh the data enable/disable. I select enable and the excel file is saved as a different file and the query reference in the new saved file is deleted (static version)
I have managed to write code to remove the database link from the new saved as file but what I still havent figured out is that the source excel file is refreshed automaticly when the script is running. I have set the database properties on automatic refresh on open which works if I activate manualy the file but with script down below, it does not refresh the data automaticly. What is the VB code to refresh the data in the source XLS file??

Dim prompt As Long
prompt = 200503
Dim objExcelApp As Object
Set objExcelApp = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
objExcelApp.displayalerts = False
objExcelApp.Workbooks.Open "c: emp est.xls" 'this file has the connection with the access database.

This may be something very simple, but i have a table which collects varying data from different worksheets to finally calculate a Work in Progress result. Each line on the table consists of the same formula, and certain columns are used to changes %s which change the result.
When the data is changed, the formulas work through and update the new values with no problem until the last couple of columns. With these i am finding I have to copy and paste the formula back into the same place to refresh the data. The formula for those cells which causes the problem are:
Column X:
=IF(AE87="TRUE",(IF(G87>100,100,105)),(IF(AE87="Y",F87,(VLOOKUP(G87, lookup,2,FALSE)))))
Column Y;
=+W88*X88/100
Column Z;
=+U89-H89+Y89
Column AA and AB and AC:
No formulas
Column AD:
=AND(W87<0,X87>70)
Column AE:
=TEXT(AD87,1)
I have checked in the options and the calculation is set to automatic which I presume can cause these problems.

I am using Excel 2003.
It’s been working perfectly up until around an hour ago. However, now when I close Excel, I get compile errors.
These compile errors seem to be because Excel is trying to access controls in the workbook after it has closed. Since the workbook is closed, VBA can no longer ‘see’ the controls, and therefore it thows up errors.
I’m also getting a similar error on a Worksheets("DataExplorer").unprotect line, which seems to be because the worksheet isn’t there after closing.
These errors only occur when I close the whole excel application using the big cross in the top right. If I just close the workbook (using the smaller cross just below the big cross in the top right of excel), it doesn’t throw up these errors.
Just to clarify: all of the code runs perfectly when Excel is open. The errors are being thrown up for lines of code which run without problem until Excel is closed.

I have a series of external database connections that I run in Excel, connecting to a Server based DB and running some SELECT statements. (ingres). We may have up to dozen of client machines accessing the ingres DB at any time. All is good at this point but when excel goes to INSERT some calculated data back to the main database, it appears that my Excel spreadsheet connection is locking the database when it connects, keeping other people from using their client connections.
first question: Does anyone know if the connection excel uses to run sql statements via external database connection will indeed prevent other users from connecting to the main database?
second question: if so, is there a setting or something that can make excel more "passive"?

From within VBA I need to open a database connection and issue a select and store the results in my spreadsheet. The issue is that I only JUST learned that you can do this and I dont know where I can look for instructions. Incase it matters, I am trying to connect to a Sybase DB. I have used perl, c# and a little bit of Java to do this but never from with in Basic (let alone basic within excel!)

I'm using Excel 2010 to link a table to a XML file on my server. I'd like to distribute the Excel file to a group of people and have it updated every time the XML file is updated on the server.
In Excel, I'm pulling the data using "Data", "From Web" and then I type in the path of the XML file.
Excel then builds a table with all the data but if the XML file is updated on the server, the data remains static, even if I click "Refresh" or "Refresh XML data" on the table.
It should be able to download new data including new columns to the table, if any.

I have a report that uses external data to feed a Pivot Table.
I noticed that the data source had been turned off automatically by Excel and turned it on and added the file location to the trust centre.
I also set the data to refresh when the workbook is opened.
I saved the file and then tried to refresh the data which caused Excel to crash. Of course now I can't open the file either because when it attempts to refresh itself on opening that causes Excel to crash as well.
Addendum: I have removed the Trusted Location which has caused Excel to disable the connection again. This has solved the crash on opening but I still can't refresh the data.

I have an excel workbook that includes data imported from a TFS query. I have a VBA macro that refreshes the TFS data, but since it behaves as though the user is clicking the "refresh" button, it prompts the user, warning that this will overwrite unsaved data.
I need to run this on a loop so that it continually refreshes and writes a status message out to a file that gets used elsewhere, but it won't work if it prompts after each loop.
Is it possible to disable this alert, defaulting to "Yes", as in overwrite? I've tried Application.DisplayAlerts = False, but that doesn't seem to cover this alert.
