Counting The Number Of Unique Text Strings In A Column

How would I go about counting the number of times TA shows within strings of text in a range within a sheet. Example: TA,MH in cell A2, CB,TA in cell C40, ES,TA in cell Q19. Result would be 3. Ideally, I'd like the formula to reference a cell that has TA as the look up data such as in A1 I'd have TA.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to count the number of unique items in a single column (~5,000 rows of data). For example, I may have the following data
a1 = apples
a2 = pears
a3 = oranges
a4 = apples
a5 = apples
a6 = apples
a7 = pears
in this case number of uniques items is 3
Right now I am using a Pivot Table to figure out the number of unique items but I am sure there is an easier way to do this.
I have been trying to format the rows on this sheet to color scale red based on the number of repeat text strings in Column E. Referring to the attached example sheet, '321/312.2/321.3' appears the most times and the goal is to color code the rows it appears in the deepest shade of red, then the next highest occurring string would shade the rows it appears in a lighter shade, etc, in descending order. Our team currently does this across multiple sheets manually everyday and it would be a real time saver if we could get excel to do this automatically.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI want to count the number of consecutive text entries in the one column. Skip a certain entry eg: NA, then count the next string of the same entry. eg:
Apples
Apples
Apples
Apples
NA
NA
NA
Apples
Apples
Apples
NA
So the output that I am after will be counting the number of Apples in a row 4 & 3 but skipping NA.
I'm looking for the easiest way to count the number of occurrences within a cell range.
The formula that I'm currently using is:
=COUNTIF(D$5:D$8,"a*")
This counts the number of cells that start with 'a' and returns the sum. It seems to work fine, but when I try to make it look for more values in the range it gives me an error. For example;
When I want to find multiple values in the range and count them all, I use this formula:
=COUNTIF(D$5:D$8,OR("a*","b*","c*"))
I have a long list of products in an Excel column. I want to count the number of unique items in the list (the cells contain strings, not values).
I know I can use the "Remove Duplicates" tool in the Data menu, and then use a Count function on the resulting list. I wondered if there was an Excel function or formula that would do it, similar to the Frequency function that does the same thing with a list of values.
I want to paste a list of customers into a sheet and then have a formula that counts the number of customers. So, even if a customer appears 10 times it would only count it once and and continues down the column and counts the next company name and so on. Then it gives me a total of the number of different companies in that column.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI found the following formula online while searching for how to count unique instances of a number in a list. The list may have blank cells or repeated numbers but this formula works. =SUMPRODUCT((A1:100<>"")/COUNTIF(A1:A100,A1:A100&""))
So my question is...can someone verbally explain just exactly what is going on? i.e. I don't understand the <>"" in the sumproduct argument or the &"" in the second argument of the countif.
I picked up a great formula from this website to count unique values =SUM(IF(FREQUENCY(K19:K205,K19:K205)>0,1)) and it works great. Thank you to whoever sent it (sorry, forgot who)
I am trying to find a formula to do the same for text.
I run a report that dumps from data from an ERP system. I've attached a sample of this report in excel that has two sheets. A summary and the data.
I am able to report on the total number of Purchase order lines and total purchase orders using various formulas. I am also able to use formulas to report on the number of lines associated with each product in the I column.
However I cannot, how to calculate the number of unique Po# (B Column) numbers based on the Product (I Column) .....
I have several columns in an excel sheet which contain values (eg. Names). The entered names can be unique or already exist in the column. I need to find out (using a function or macro) how many different names were entered. Duplicates shshould be ignored in the count.
I have data like so
A B
water juice
water water
juice soda
water juice
juice juice
I need to count the number of occurrences when the answers between column A and B are not matching.
I want to count unique items in a list with an array formula, like the items is in 3 columns A,B,C are from row 2 to 101. Now i use an array to filter out some rows in the columns of B,C & then count unique items in Column A.
so,
column A has "30 diffrent names repeated from A2 to A101"
column B has numbers 0 to 100
column c has value either 0 or 1
now i use an formula TO filter out rows in column B & c
formula =count(IF((B2:B101>0)*(C2:C101<>1),1))) using ctrl+shift+enter
now what should i suffix or prefix to this formula to count unique values in column A.
How can I count the number of unique values in a column?
I have a spreadsheet that lists transactions that occurred over a one-year period (2007). I need to determine the number of days our facility was operational. No transactions on a particular date (25-Dec-07, for example) and the facility would be considered to have been closed on that date.
On the days that the facility was open, multiple transactions would have occurred on those open days and those multiple tranactions are all reflected in the worksheet.
So I need to count each occurrence of '01-Jan-07', '02-Jan-07', and so on.
I have used the advanced filter option in excel 2010 to display all the unique occurences of a list of names (column B) and then used the count function =COUNTIF(A$2:A$21,B2) to count the occurences of each name (column C).
However, excel did not manage to take into account the last 3 entries in column A (mir-23). I assume this is because it is a mixture of text and numeric values. How can I include this information in the grouping and counting?

I'm trying to get a forumla to tell me if a filtered column is showing a unique entry.
suppose column A has as follows
A1 - Bob
A2 - Bob
A3 - Sam
A4 - Bob
A5 - Sam
Now, if I filter by ANY column, I want to have a formula that will tell me if the filtered/visible name(s) in column A is only 1 name. Mind you, if the user filters by criteria in a another column, the unique name may show in column A, only once or multiple times depending on how the other column is filtered.
I've tried count, counta, countif and such but doesn't seem to deal with what I am trying to do.
I have an address column in which multiple strings of text and numbers have been combined. I need to isolate each string and place it into its own column.
Column looks like this....
ADDRESS
615 NE CORDER AVE, LEES SUMMIT, MO 64063
2661 NW LEES SUMMIT RD, LEES SUMMIT, MO 64064
104 SE 4TH ST, LEES SUMMIT, MO 64063
4944 SW GULL POINT DR, LEES SUMMIT, MO 64082
3904 SW PRYOR RD, LEES SUMMIT, MO 64082
329 NW BRADFORD ST, LEES SUMMIT, MO 64064
They need too look something like this...
No.
Suffix
Street
Type
City
State
Zip
615 NE Corder Ave Lees Summit MO 64083
The problem I'm having when trying to use a "left" or "right" formulas is some of the strings have different positions in the whole string itself (does that make sense?) (some addresses have 4 characters, some have 3, so on....)
I am finding many posting on this topic with unique numeric values and have not come across one in regards to a text value. The essence of the formula is looking through a list for unique email addresses and now I need to up it to a date range and eventually a store # range
I am using the following array formula to establish an overall count:
=SUM(IF(FREQUENCY(IF(LEN('[Data - Deliverables.xlsb]orders'!A2:A5000)>0,MATCH('[Data - Deliverables.xlsb]orders'!A2:A5000,'[Data - Deliverables.xlsb]orders'!A2:A5000,0),""), IF(LEN('[Data - Deliverables.xlsb]orders'!A2:A5000)>0,MATCH('[Data - Deliverables.xlsb]orders'!A2:A5000,'[Data - Deliverables.xlsb]orders'!A2:A5000,0),""))>0,1))
Ctrl+Shift+Enter
The date column is E:E.
The store number column is G:G
Formula which will count unique values in column A based on condition in Column B which "y" .....
Show ranges as A:A instead of A1:A100 as I dont know the size of the table, it can be thousands rows .....
In column A and B I have text representing an Entity and its Intercompany,
respectively. In column C I have concatenated the two. So now in Column C,
for example, I have "BillTom" in row 1 and "TomBill" in row 900.
I need Excel to convert the text into some sort of code, ASCII or number
that shows they are EQUAL. I need something that shows "TomBill" and
"BillTom" are the same thing, just in a different order.
I cannot build an IF formula or use Find/Replace, as I will have thousands
of these types of combinations.
I am working on an attendance spreadsheet in Excel 2003 at work that will display data showing number of learners allocated to an activity, number unallocated, number attended, number not attended, number of acceptable reasons and number of unacceptable reasons by Block Letter. My problem is that for a number of reasons the same learner number is allocated to a number of activities each day. I need to know how many learners from each block have been allocated, not how many allocations each learner has from each Block.
I have tried different formulas, but fast running out of time
I have attached a modified sample from the main spreadsheet
I need : Cell H4 to calculate the number of unique values from Column C on Mon tab but only meeting the following criteria Mon!$N$3:$N$4000="AM", Mon!$O$3:$O$4000=D4, Mon!$B$3:$B$4000="mon1" I can then apply to the other rows.
In Column A I have the list of strings that I need to search. I want to count the number of occurrences of these strings inside these two text files: Sample1.txt and Sample2.txt. For example I have the string "DOG". I want to search and count the number of times this string appeared in Sample1.txt, and Sample2.txt
See below:
How many text strings in a reference column appear in paragraphs of text listed in another column within excel.
So column A contains text strings such as:
{{Advisor_Signature__c}}
{{Advisors_Initials__c}}
{{Advisors_Job_Title__c}}
{{Age__c}}
And I need to see whether any of these appear in cells in a reference column G. If they do, I would like to return 'Used' into column B.
An example of the type of text in each cell in column G is:
"If you have any questions regarding your offer, please contact me. For any questions regarding your benefits, payroll or company policies and programs, please contact HR. Sincerely, {{Advisor_Signature__c}} {{Advisors_Job_Title__c}}"
I don't seem to able to search for a text string across multiple reference cells.
with creating this macro to identify duplicate text strings in a column, which is great.
But, I'd like to be able to identify them by changing the text of the subsequent duplicates that are found.
For example, if 3 cells in a column are 1111, I'd like to add a string of text to the end of the 2nd & 3rd cell, but not the 1st cell.
1111
dup-1111
dup-1111-dup
This will enable me to sort the column and find the duplicate easier than just visually.
Sub color_dup()
Dim r As Range, rng As Range, Col As String
Col = "d"
Set rng = Range(Col & ":" & Col)
rng.Interior.ColorIndex = 0
For Each r In Range(Col & "1", Range(Col & "65536").End(xlUp))
If Application.CountIf(rng, r) > 1 Then
r.Interior.ColorIndex = 6
End If
Next
End Sub
I've been racking my brains trying to find a way of doing this. I have a list (column A in Excel) of over 50,000 organisations and I'd like to know what the most common words used in the names are. Ideally it would great if I could produce a top 10 list of the most common words at the top e.g. Ltd, School or Church with a count in the next column of how times that word it appears

I have a list of users with the dates they first logged into a system and the date they last logged in. I'm trying to group them together into segments so I can analyse them using a Pivot table and chart to see how often different groups are using the system, e.g. New customers in December, November, October, etc.
The trouble I am having is trying to convert the different human-readable text strings into a consistent number of weeks from today's date, e.g.
USER FIRST LOGGED IN LAST LOGGED IN
user 1 2 years 20 weeks 54 sec ago
user 2 44 min 7 sec 1 min 37 sec ago
user 3 49 weeks 2 days 17 min 3 sec ago
user 4 5 weeks 2 days 33 min 32 sec ago
user 5 38 min 9 sec 38 min 9 sec ago
user 6 5 weeks 3 days 1 hour 7 min ago
user 7 2 hours 17 min 2 hours 11 min ago
user 8 45 seconds ago 45 seconds ago
Is there a formula I can use to convert these human readble text strings into a number of weeks elapsed since today's date?
I am trying to find a formula that will count the number of unique entries there. I have tried the solutions posted on various websites to no avail (most recently:
Code:
=SUM(IF(FREQUENCY(MATCH(A1:A10,A1:A10,0),MATCH(A1:A10,A1:A10,0))>0,1))
).
The answer should be 4,457.
