ActiveX Combobox - Linked Cell Reference Lost After Save / Close And Re-open Workbook
Feb 11, 2013
Using the developer tab I inserted an Active X combo box. Under properties I referenced a 'linked cell' that I want the data to appear in. This box works great as long as I keep the sheet open. Once I save and close the workbook and re-open, that reference is lost. It shows #REF! in that field. Why does it lose the reference? I have tried to reference a cell on the same sheet as well as a cell in a different sheet and it keeps the sheet name but not the individual cell.

I have a golf teetime reservation spreadsheet. For each tee time there can be up to four players names so I use 4 columns. Times are listed in rows every 10 minutes beginning 6am until 5pm for a total of 66 rows per day. I have a member/customer list that I have on a separate sheet that I've named. I am using the ActiveX combo box next to each possible entry (so 4 columns times 66 rows = 264 combo boxes). It's a little slow and takes a long time to open. I like the ActiveX combo box because it allows me to define the box format and display and it allows search/read/write capability. The idea is the customer calls, I ask what time they want and we arrive upon an available time. I ask for a last name, I click the combo box, type the first letter of the first name and then scroll if necessary to the name and click it to add the name to the time/player cell. If no name in my list we simply type it in and I'll capture it next time I refresh my customer list.
way to dynamically define the linkedcell in the properties so that instead of 264 combo boxes, I might have one combo box that I can click on and then direct my selection to the cell I want it to go into.

I need to have a workbook (all of them in a folder, ideally) refresh in the middle of the night. The file is large so the refresh takes a full minute. I know I can't auto refresh a closed workbook (pretty sure anyway), and I can't leave the workbook open for various reasons.
So I'm thinking I could have a macro in an open excel (it kicks off on open) that will open a particular workbook elsewhere (the one I need refreshed), open it, refresh it and close/save it. Ideally it would do this for the entire group of workbooks in the folder but I'd be happy to start with just one. I would like to set it to occur every twelve hours (so at midnight, say, this would occur - I would just have to leave the workbook with the macro in it open on a computer so that it runs and completes this task every night).

I've got a kind of "menu" sheet that will pull up various reports from Excel spreadsheets. Rather than having the user work with the live data, the menu opens the file and saves it as a copy, closing the original. This is working fine.
The tweak I want to add is, since the user is looking at a copy rather than the live data, I don't want them to save when closing. Is it possible to programatically add a bit of code to the new copy to handle this?
Here's a sample of one of the menu button's code:
Code:
Private Sub CommandButton18_Click()
Dim wb As Workbook
Set wb = Workbooks.Open(Filename:="J:Z PII OvensRack Repair TrackingRack Repair List.xlsx")
With wb.Worksheets("Sheet1")
.Unprotect Password:="pass"
ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets("Sheet1").Copy
End With
[Code].....

I have a macro that opens all workbooks from one directory and runs a macro for each workbook to clean up the data. I cannot figure out how to take all those open workbooks and save them to another directory and close the workbook. Also, I do not want the macro workbook (xlsm) to save. I only want it to close. I am working in 2007 Excel.

I have an excel program that uses a modeless userform. often times i will open other spreadsheets while the form is active or minimized. if i return to the form and run it without manually bringing focus to the appropriate workbook, i get an error because it references the wrong workbook. is there a way to keep that form tied to that workbook no matter what? also, it is important that this procedure works despite the workbook name changing.

How do I reference the value contained within a combobox using VBA?
I have tried the following:
ActiveSheet. OLEObjects("cmbSearchType").Object.Value
ActiveSheet.OLEObjects("cmbSearchType").Value
Sheets("mySheet").OLEObjects("cmbSearchType").Value
Sheets("mySheet").OLEObjects("cmbSearchType").Object.Value
I'm wanting to use the drop-down combo box as a simple way for the user to choose what type of search they wish to perform on the spreadsheet. The search algorithm chosen depends upon the current value show in the combo box.
I am using Excel 2007.

I'm having a problem with named ranges in a chart. I'm using Excel 2007 in Windows XP.
I have a line graph with twenty different series all using dynamic ranges. I created each series individually, typing the name and then the dynamic range I had previously defined. As far as I am aware, Excel demands when writing the reference that you specify which sheet/workbook this named range is from, so, given the scopes of my ranges are all 'workbook', I added the name of the workbook to the references.
e.g.
Series name:
Series1
Series values:
='workbook name'!range1
This seems to work fine, but when I save and then re-open the file, the dynamic ranges no longer work. If I go to Select Data and look at the reference for a series, it has been changed thus:
Series values:
=[0]!range1

The main file was linked to other files. Instead of using the "edit links" dialogue box provided by Excel, I wish to use a list box. This list box will show all the files that the main file is linked to.
The user will have the the option to single select or multiple select the files.
Upon clicking "ok" it will "open and close" the selected files, thus updating the main file. (it should also remove the update links dialogue box of the source files if they had it, it will be a hassle for the user to click on the "don't update" for every linked file that is open)
I know the update links in Excel is able to do it but the links sometimes will result in errors, beside it doesn't offer multiple selections.

step 3. run macro "test", combobox1 should be populated, save and close file.
step 4. re-open file, drop down on combobox1, no values to select from.

I'm trying ActiveX controls for the first time.
I need my code to start at the cell that the checkbox is linked to, but I don't know how to do that.
I have several checkboxes on the same sheet. I already have the checkboxes linked to cells, I just need to know how to tell the vba to find the right place to start.

I have a number of spreadsheets in a folder called country (each sheet is the name of a region). These sheets are linked to another sheet called master which is in another folder.
The regional sheets all have a list of wrap codes and pull details specific to each code from the master sheet. All wrap codes for all sheets are stored in the master, details for wrpas are manually entered here as well as any other associated information.
The link is kept by way of an index match formula used to populate information from the master for all wrap codes in the regional sheet.
Each of the regional sheets act as a report for a specific region and the master is the main source. Every week we need to open the regional sheets (some reside in different folders/subfolders) update the index match formulas in the sheet so that the data is refreshed and then save as a new file with data as values to another folder for reporting.
I am looking for a code that can automatically update all of the excel sheets in a given folder and then save them to a new folder automatically.
I have very very limited knowledge of VB (did make a hello world dialog box once) and am stuck as to any way to automate this process.

I have a 'Summary' workbook which collates values from a series of 'sub-workbooks', (and can also update values in those sub workbooks).
the subworkbooks are setup so that when they are saved they also copy certain values out to another 'backup' file.
So there are 2 possible routes that the files will be used in:
1) SubWorkbook opened directly
- User opens SubWorkbook and makes some changes.
- User closes the SubWorkbook saving changes, or clicks the save button. The BeforeSave event opens the "restore" workbook, copies over the key values from the subworkbook, then saves & closes the "restore" workbook.
2) SubWorkbook opened remotely
- User / Admin opens the "Summary" workbook and changes an option.
- The summary workbook opens a subworkbook and makes changes, then saves it. The subworkbook should (as before), then open the restore workbook and save the key values etc.
The problem is in the second scenario the 'restore' workbook doesn't get opened.
I have created a set of 3 workbooks to illustrate the problem here.
Book1.xls = Summary workbook
Book2.xls = Subworkbook
Book3.xls = Restore workbook.
If you open book2 and then save it the 'BeforeSave' event will cause it to open book3 and write the output of 'Now()' to the next free row of book3-columnA, before then closing and saving book3,......

I need to open about 2000 documents one at a time, and save them with a different name.
they are a mix of word documents, PDFs and .jpg pictures.
some VBA like:
Open.file strPath & nextfile
where strpath = C:Temp
and nextfile = picture01.jpg
What should the line be? or is it more complex than a single line ?

using "textbox1.setfocus" or textbox1.activate" does not accomplish what I need. I have also applied this the setfocus and activate to the worksheet open event but without success.
VB:
Private Sub workbook_open()
Worksheets("regular sku").Select
TextBox1.SetFocus
Worksheets("regular sku").ScrollArea = "I1:T36"

Created a new tab and menu buttons on the Ribbon in Excel in 3 separate .xltm files. Everything worked great through all of the development and testing, but when we went live we got reports of a bug. Here is what is happening...
User opens the template file and immediately saves it as a .xlsm file with a new name in a new location. The user then does various amounts of work in the file. When the user needs to use one of the tools on the custom tab, it is as if the buttons are inactive or not associated with any actions. The tab and buttons are all visible, the animation of the button being pressed works when any of the buttons are clicked, but nothing happens. The user can close and reopen the file and the ribbon buttons will work correctly, but not until they close and reopen.
Upon digging into the problem, we found that if the user clicks on the custom tab before they save the file, all of the buttons will work correctly after the save. But if the tab is not activated before the save, they dont work until a close and reopen.
The XML code is good because if I place it in a add on file (.xlam) and trigger it from the main file, there is no problem. But this is not a good solution since the add on file needs to be located in the same file that the main file is run from which can be any number of places.

I'm trying to get Mac OS X Excel VBA to understand this code however the ChDir reference and the filepath seem to be causing problems. I would like to specify in the code where the file should be stored but I did try removing the filepath section altogether but to no avail.
Option Explicit
Sub SvMe()
'Saves filename as value of A1 plus the current date
Dim newFile As String, fName As String
' Don't use "/" in date, invalid syntax
fName = Range("A1").Value
'Change the date format to whatever you'd like, but make sure it's in quotes
newFile = fName & " " & Format$(Date, "mm-dd-yyyy")
' Change directory to suit your PC, including USER NAME
ChDir _
"C:Documents and Settings USER NAME Desktop"
ActiveWorkbook. SaveAs Filename:=newFile
End Sub

I need to automate:-
One of the sheets needs to recalculate for the sort by ascending code to run on the sheet.
Save and then close after say 2 minutes of opening (to give the ODBC connections enough time to finish).

I have data that daily needs to be refreshed and printed to pdf.
I figure the simplest way to do this would be to task schedule the workbook to open daily. Then on open it will refresh the data, print it after all data has been refreshed and close the workbook.
I set it up originally without the need to print so I have all the queries set to refresh when opening the file, however when I now try and put the code to print to pdf on the workbook open event it runs before the queries are finished running. (Query notes: queries were created through Microsoft query, and are accessing a MySQL database queries set to refresh when opening the file queries set to enable background refresh).

One of my computers pulls info from my cash register once everyday (sales info). Then I have a excel monthly sales sheet that pulls the info from the register info and puts it in the right places. So the computer pulls the register info at 9:20pm everyday, then I have my task manager open excel at 9:25 everyday and it has a workbook open macro to automatically pull the info into the excel spreadsheet. Here's my problem-- I need to close it.
I'm sure I could use a workbook close macro, but when it tries to close it won't it come up with a save, don't save, cancel prompt? Nobody will be there to hit SAVE so it won't close? Is there just a macro that could save it then close it?

The situation is that I have created a workbook in a network folder: xprojectsexcelclientAApril
umbers
The workbook links to a few other workbooks on the same network, but in the parent folder: xprojectsexcelclientAApril
The problem occurs when my colleagues have to updates the links in the main workbook, because they have not mapped the network drive in the same way as I have. The problem is NOT the prefix, but the fact that they have a more direct link to the network folder. My collages have mapped the folder like: xclientAApril
Is there a way where I can make the links in the workbook, so they don't depend on the entire string, but only on the fact that it is in the parent folder?

I call the macro below from a Workbook_BeforeClose sub; however, if the user has not saved changes before they hit the close then the Sub SaveFile runs and then after the backup save they are then asked do you want to save changes.
I initially had this sub run with Workbook_BeforeSave, but I don't really want to run this everytime the user selects save.
Any ideas on how to how the save changes first and then the backup?

I am testing the following section of code.
Sub Macro1()
Dim NewWB As Workbook, NewName As String
Set NewWb = Workbooks.Add
NewName = Application.GetSaveAsFilename(ThisWorkbook.Name)
NewWb.SaveAs NewName
NewWb.Close False
Workbooks.Open (ThisWorkbook.Path & "/" & ThisWorkbook.Name)
End Sub
It seems like I need to rename the sheet I am working on in order for this code to work. If I do not, it tells me that it "cannot save this workbook with the same name as another open workbook".
I am trying to use this code to get around an error with Excel described here: [url]
I would like to have the sheet save itself (not "Save As"), close, reopen, and continue running the macro. What adjustments do I need to make to this code to do this. I have tried different things, but I must be getting the syntax wrong.

I am trying to create a form button that will save as and close the active workbook. I have the Save As code working but I can't find any code to close the workbook that will work. A couple of issues: I don't have control of what the workbook is called - the user will name it - so I can't do a simple Workbooks (" ").Close. Also, I don't want to quit the application. I don't know if the user will have other worksheets open. I also tried ActiveWorkbook.Close and that didn't seem to work either. Not sure what I am doing wrong.
