Allowing VBA To Edit Protected Cells
Feb 6, 2014
I made a sheet to control some reports, and it works like this: you click a button ("Insert"), it opens a userform, you type everything there (date, serial number, client, city) and it place that info on the first row available. Then there's a "Clear Last Entry" button, and that's it.
I would like to protect the whole sheet and only allow users to insert new entries via the "Insert" button. How can I do this? If I protect normally Excel won't allow the VBA code to write on cells.

I have an event handler that runs a procedure when a user double clicks a cell. This procedure modifies the contents of this cell and other cells. I want the user to be able to select the cell so they can double click it, but I don't want them to be able to single click it and modify it by hand (accidentally or not). Is there a way to lock/unlock the contents of the cell without locking the cell itself?

Run on Excel 2010
Sub UseChangePassword() Dim wksOne As Worksheet Set wksOne = Application.ActiveSheet
' Protect the worksheet. wksOne.Protect ' Establish a range that can allow edits ' on the protected worksheet.
wksOne.Protection.AllowEditRanges.Add _ Title:="Classified", _ Range:=Range("A1:A4"),
_ Password:="secret" MsgBox "Cells A1 to A4 can be edited on the protected worksheet."
' Change the password. wksOne.Protection.AllowEditRanges(1).ChangePassword
_ Password:="moresecret" MsgBox "The password for these cells has been changed." End Sub
The red color code is giving error message: Application defined or Object defined error.

I have the following macro so that we can use the outline feature without having to unprotect a sheet.
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
With Worksheets("Schedule")
.Protect Password:="APQP", Userinterfaceonly:=True[code]....
However once the macro is run, filtering will not work without unprotecting the sheet first. If you choose not to run the macro, filtering will work without unprotecting the sheet however the outline feature will not. what I need to add and where to make both the outline and filter features to work without having to unptotect the sheet?

I have this password protected Excel template (v.2002), it includes one particular drop-down box, which is not a data validation choice selection, but a 'object' drop-down box which offers choices linked to a hidden value, via the INDEX function. The issue arises when I password protect the template and attempt to select from the available choices, I get a dialog box telling me the "the cell or chart...is password protected and...read-only"..."To modify...remove protection". I imagined checking the "Edit Objects" selection, upon protecting the worksheet would have avoided any problems, but that doesn't do the job.

A client has sent me an Excel workbook that appears on the screen with the message adivising that it is Protected View as a result of having been downloaded from the internet. If I click on the Enable Editing button the workbook is completely deactivated. I have played around with my Trust Centre settings but nothing seems to work.

I have created a simple userform that is linked to a button on sheet1. When the data in the userform is submitted, I set it up so it goes into a database under sheet2. The problem is, I don't want anyone modifying the entries in the database. Usually I would protect the sheet with a password, but when I do that, there is an error when the userform is submitted. The only thing I can think of is to hide sheet2, which doesn't seem like a great solution.
Is there any way to protect my database from being modified yet still allow the userform to be linked to it?

Is there a way to set 2 cells equal, while allowing either one to be manually changed? So if I put in value of 10 for Cell1, Cell1 and and Cell2 will both be equal to 10. Then if I change Cell2 to a value of 20, both cells will be equal to 20.

I am trying to setup a number of cells with a validation list allowing "Yes" or "". I would like the cell value to equal 1 when "Yes" is selected. Is this possible without VBA?
The reason for this is because I want to set up conditional formatting with the tick, cross, exclamation mark icon set (With a tick appearing for "Yes"), but this conditional formatting only works with numerical values.

I have a macro enabled spreadsheet in which I am able to paste in the customer number as text, but I need to touch the cell in order to make the customer name populate in the next column.
Double click - enter and F2 -enter both will do this, but I'd rather not be doing this for 200 rows every time I have to use it. Is there a way to touch all of these rows without VBA? The spreadsheet was built by our IT department years ago and is rather fickle. I can't risk interrupting the code or I end up having to close it and start over. It's password protected.
Text to columns doesn't work.

I have a template that I have hidden the formulas but allowed editing. Is it possible to create a pop up box for the end user to use to edit a cell with the hidden formula? This is a budget template with already set up formulas but the end user needs to be able to make edits but the end users are beginner excel users and if they double click on the cell the formula will automatically delete leaving the cell blank. I need a way around this so they cant view the formula but only change the data if they really mean to change it.

I have several Excel files that I am about to change some data in, so I need to create an macro to speed it up. All sheets should be updated besides the last one.
The number of sheets differs between the files. The data that should be changed is in column C, starting at cell C10. But the number of rows differs. If the data in the cell begins with a Q, the Q should be removed, and if it doesn't begins with Q it should be skipped.

I've protected all cells with formula and those not needed to use the program. The only cells that can be selected/changed are those that need the values for the calculations.
How do I protect the sheet from being saved/stolen when trialed by possible customers?

I have a spreadsheet that is very large and formated a certain way. I want to make sure that a user cant put the cursor in the lower left corner and copy cells by dragging, copy & paste, or do anything other than input data and be able to highleght text and reinput data in case they mistyped or misspelled the data.
ex: user clicks on cell E33 and types in '1234568' and then move to next cell. The user can click back on E33 and can correct by retyping. That is all the user is allowed.
The cells in question are also in ranges if this helps. EX: 'E33:AJ67'

What I want is for to first warn the user that rows have been filtered and the Macro will not run, then once the filters are switch off, the macro will run. It does the last bit at the moment but switches off the filtering of protected cells and once the macro has run the sheet can no longer be filtered .
Sub NewRowSQT()
Dim ans As String
ans = MsgBox("Ensure you have selected a cell in column B immediately below the section you wish to add to or the Macro will FAIL!", vbYesNo)

I have a protected worksheet with about a dozen unprotected cells (so the user can just answer question from a validated list). Also unprotected is a hyperlink back to the main menu (Sheet1).
My problem is when a user clicks outside of where they should (i.e. on a protected cell) - it executes the hyperlink back to Sheet1.
I have tried unprotecting cells around the hyperlink. I even tried putting "dummy" hyperlinks around the main one referring it back to the same sheet.

Is there any way to allow autofiltering and sorting even with locked cells within the range to be sorted? Does anyone know if that's even possible with VB?

I have a workbook with a series of sheets that have tables for entering data. The table row and column labels and formulas in certain cells of each sheet are locked and some sheets are hidden.
When opening the file I want to clear all cell contents (interior color, comments, data, etc) in all the unlocked cells on each sheet that is not hidden.
I tried protecting the sheets first so only the unlocked cells would be accessible, but when I run the code below I get an error saying that the clear contents etc. cannot be performed because the sheet is protected. If it is not protected, everything gets wiped out.
How can I keep the locked stuff but clear the unlocked cells?
For Each ws In ThisWorkbook.Worksheets
If ws.Visible = xlSheetVisible Then
ws.Protect Password:="aaa" 'Protect each sheet
ws.Cells.ClearContents 'clear content of any unprotected cells
ws.Cells.ClearComments 'clear any cell comments
ws.Cells.Interior.ColorIndex = 0 'set background colour to no fill
Active.Cells.Range ("a1") 'make the active cell the top left
End If
Next ws

I'm using Microsoft Excel 2008 for Mac version 12.2.0 (090605) (Mac OS 10.5).
I created a sheet, selected some cells to be locked and others to be unlocked (using Format > Cells), then I used Tools > Protection > Protect Sheet (choosing Contents only, not Objects or Scenarios). This has the desired effect of protecting the locked cells from users accidentally typing changes and overwriting their current contents.
I can still enter new data in the unlocked cells as expected, but unexpectedly I cannot change the formatting of unlocked cells (e.g., shading, font - bold). These are *unlocked* cells so even if the sheet is protected, why can't I change the formatting for them? It is too tedious to Unprotect the sheet every time I need to change formatting of an unlocked cell.
I have zero experience with Visual Basic and can't even find options that others have described (e.g., right clicking the sheet name does not yield "Show code" and Tools > Macros does not yield anything comprehensible about VBA). So if your suggestions involve something complex, please do include detailed instructions!
