Array Mode That Put It Back In The Letter, Number Display For Formulas/functions

My excel (2003) is stuck in array mode - is there any way to get it out of Array Mode and put it back in the letter:number display for formulas/functions? It's doing this in VBA too which is totally killing me.

Database Functions Vs. Array Formulas Vs. SUMPRODUCT Vs. Pivot Tables

Dec 13, 2006

All I am doing is counting text values in a table.

The table has 3 main columns(which are relevant to this thread anyway).

Shift - Area - Status

The example I have attached shows examples of DCOUNTA, SUMPRODUCT and a Pivot Table.

I have read many threads stating that the best one to use is Pivot Table followed by DCOUNTA followed by SUMPRODUCT.

The most effective for me seems to be SUMPRODUCT (although this does slow excel down dramatically when you use a lot of these formulas). As do Array Formulas

The Pivot Table does not update on its own, therefore constantly needs to be refreshed. (I could use code to do this)

The DCOUNTA seems to be the least effective at doing what I want (unless I am doing something wrong)

In the attached example can the DCOUNTA be used more efficiently as I don't like the fact that I am duplicating rows to apply the criteria for a different shift. e.g

Area 1 - Late Shift - Banned
Area 1 - Early Shift - Banned

I want my table to be as follows (as the SUMPRODUCT shows)

AREA - Early Shift - Late Shift - Night Shift - Area Total
Area 1
Area 2
Area 3
Area 4
Area 5

Shift Total

Display Chosen Number If Cell Text Begins With Specific Letter?

I'm trying to write an IF formula that will return a number if the word in the adjacent cell begins with a specific letter. Here's what I want to show:

City

Express
02

Overnight

So "C" would return 01, "E" would return 02 and "O" would return 03.

IF And Vlookup Functions Which Comes Back Yes Or No.

Sep 20, 2007

I have a spreadsheet with over 20,000 rows. From another spreadsheet I need to find if any of a list of 90 customers are within the first, using a simple IF and vlookup formula which comes back yes or no.

I am using: =IF(A2 = VLOOKUP(A2,ihcust!B:B,1),"YES","NO")

However, although this works when they are spelt exact in both sheets if they are not it will say no.
eg. If I was Looking up "Joe's Icecreams" from the list of 90 but in the other sheet it is listed as "Joe's Icecreams (admin)" it would not recognise it and come back no.

Is there away to get around this problem

Calculate The Cells In Sheet Containing A Large Number Of Array Formulas

Oct 14, 2008

I I have a excel document which has a sheet containing a large number of array formulas.

I turned the automatic calculation off.

However, even when I press F9 to calculate the cells it just crunches, gets stuck at “Calculating 0%” and then crashes.

The majority of the array formulas are IF queries with multiple criteria.

Would it speed up the calculation if I didn’t use array formulas?

Convert IF Functions To IF OR Formulas

Jun 12, 2008

To avoid manually updating a formula 100+ times, I am looking for a way to update cells in a column with reoccuring formulas with references to other cells that vary respectively from cell to cell. Meanwhile, there are other cells without formulas that this will not apply to in the same column. I am trying to avoid macros if possible, unless it can be easily understood/modified by someone who knows next to nothing about macros or VBA. My initial thought was to use the find/replace feature, but I don't know of any way to do this so the reference will update respectively for each cell (ie A9 then A10 etc.) in both the find and the replace fields.

ie
Find: A9="Text1"
Replace: OR(A9="Text1",A9="Text2")
Where the row number updates respectively.

Simplified example:

Existing:
=IF(A9="Text1","1","2")
[misc. blank or non-blank cell]
=IF(A10="Text1","1","2")
etc..................................

How To Build And Execute Formulas And Functions

Dec 10, 2012

how to build and execute formulas and functions. My love for messing with excel started with an interest in personal financial management utilizing amoritzation tables, budget planning, paychecks, tax bases, etc., My wife sees it as strange but I love messing around with the Excel formulas. For now it's all self taught but, as stated, that will be changing.

So far, I haven't been able to find how to execute the following scenario.

For brief background, I'm attempting to identify the results of various outcomes of an individual currency trade by changing the investment size given the results of the last "x" amount of trades. Put another way, I'm running data sets on Forextester wherein I trade a historical period of time on a specific set of currencies, i.e. "Pound/Dollar." I'm wanting to know what the resulting balances would be, or would have been, if I implemented a money management strategy that increased my investment on consecutive trades when there was an "x" number of consecutive "wins" (ending account balance more than beginning) on the previous "x" number of trades. and decreased my investment when there was an "x" number of consecutive losses (ending account balance less than beginning account balance) on "x" number of trades...

So far, I've built the formula so that if I input the beginning and ending balance of a specific trade and Excel populates a "W" or "L" (Win or Loss) in the "Results:" Cell which was pretty simple. The following is one of three scenarios.

Strategy
Conservative:

Start with risk 1% of Account balance (which is $10,000 for example)

The Rule: With each open trade reduce the account balance used by the amount risked on opened trade
(For consecutive trades, assume current trade results in a total loss of investment. Thus, $100.00 of the $10,000 accounts means you're working with $9,900 on next trade)

The Rule: After 3 consecutive winners that make (1.8 * Risk percent used by the trade * account balance used by the trade) or greater in profit, increase risk to 1.5%

First trade Investment: $100.00 plus minimum of 80% gain. Second Trade Investment: $99.00 plus minimum of

80% gain. Third Trade Investment: $98.00 plus minimum of 80% gain. For trade number four, the investment amount would now be 1.5% of the total account balance.

After 1 loss reduce risk to 1%
First Trade Investment $100.00 and you lose - size of loss doesn't matter. Next trade opens with investment of 1%.

After 2 consecutive losses reduce risk to 0.5%

First trade Investment $100.00 and you lose - size of loss doesn't matter. Next trade opens with investment of 1%. Second trade is also a loss. Thus, third trade invests 0.5% of total account balance.

After 4 consecutive losses reduce risk to 0.33%

After 2 consecutive wins that make (1.8 * 0.33%* account balance used by the trade) in profit, reset risk to 1%
(Two wins = 1% investment, regardless of number of previous losses

There are two additional scenarios but they all follow the same pattern. The differences are only in the actual risk percentage. I can modify the formula as needed.

I can get it to build an array after the math, but I can’t get it to pass the resulting array back to the formula. The following snippet is a simple version of the code. Here I am building the incoming array in the macro, but same difference at the end. The outgoing Oil_spgr variable never seems to contain the full, final array.

In this old thread (which the software did not let me continue) Yogi mentions 2nd mode and third mode etc.

[url]

In the above thread, Yogi has a nice formula for finding the "other mode", when the other mode is a tie. I am wondering - is there a simple formula
to find the 2nd (or 3rd) most frequent number. For example the (AFAIK non-existent) formula or function would act like this:

1
1
1
3
3
2

"modelarge(range,2)" should return 3

Excel 2010 :: Transferring Array Back To Worksheet?

Jun 20, 2014

I have a workbook that is doing something I don't understand. In several places I am using arrays to transfer/modify information, then placing the array back onto the worksheet, and this works perfectly. The following code... doesn't.

(I've cut out unnecessary code like variable declarations - all my integer items are declared as Long)

Code:
Dim varA As Variant, varB(10000, 1) As Variant
Set wkDest = Sheets("a")
erB = 0
For lpTerm = 1 To 4

[Code]...

and several other ways. What happens is just null output, a full column of nothing. However, when I expand my worksheet range to two columns, all the data from varB appears - it is shifted down one column and row. So my data starts at .cells(2,2) instead of .cells(1,1). The data is all perfect, I've verified it left and right.... I just can't figure out why it's getting shifted like this.

Efficiency Of Custom Functions (UDF) Compared To Standard/Native Formulas

Sep 30, 2006

Assume I have a sheet consisting of 50 rows with 3 columns of figures. A fourth column contains a formula to calculate values, eg A1+B1+C1, on each line/row. I could enter A1+B1+C1 in the first cell and Copy, Paste to the other 49 cells. Alternatively, I replace A1+B1+C1 with a UDF.

Is there any difference in performance with using a UDF compared to using the long-hand/standard approach, or is it just a question of convenience? After all, both are doing the same operation with the same calculation.

Sum With If Using Array Functions Or Sumif With VLookup

Apr 7, 2014

In sheet1 I have name(column A) and value(column B)
In sheet2 I have name (column C) and key(column D)
In sheet 3 I have results

Example ( It is just a total nonsense example, the real data is net inflow of some funds that are unique)
Sheet1
House 1000
Car 1500
pet 2000
Sheet 2
house1
car1
pet2

So in the sheet 3 I want to put a formula that is capable to sum all values of the sheet2 if the name has a key of 1in the sheet2, the key columns has values of 1 or 2

I think in SQL will be something with join and group by with having clause.

The result will be 2500 in the sheet 3.

What I tried: My attempt is to do something like this code ( using array functions).

Passing Array Variables In Functions?

Sep 15, 2012

What I am trying to do is to automatically build a "tree" diagram representing the links in a huge model which is dynamically configured. What I have a problem with is the following:

The tree consists of layers, I start off with the top layer and for each entry in the top layer I can add all its subsidiary layers and draw links between them, this uses a function which takes as its arguments the node name and its layer number (how far down the tree it is) and the number of items in that layer so far.

So I start at the first item in Layer 1 and there are as yet no layers below it. I start at the first one and add the first item in layer 2 then I kick the function off again and that adds the first item connected to item 1 in layer 2 in the layer below (3) starting at the first one, and so on. When I reach the bottom I go up one layer and add the second item in the bottom layer and so on. When I have added all the connctions to the first item in the next to bottom layer I go up one layer and add the second item connected to the first item in that layer and then add all the items connected to it and so on and so on.

In this way I build up the network exhaustively (to make things more complex more than one item in a layer may connect to the same item in the layer below).

I can do almost all that, the issue I am struggling with is I need to keep track of how many items there are in each layer (as some layer 1 items connect to 1, 2, 3 ...8 layer 2 items and so on). my idea is to keep a running total of these in an array LevelCount(1), LevelCount(2) etc. so when I add a new item to a layer I know where to put it. However I cant workout how to do this final step.

Currently I have a function that draws the nodes below a specified node this and takes the correct value from the array LevelCount(n) by passing Levelcount(n) (where n represents how far down the tree you are) into the function and the function then updates the value of LevelCount(n) (ByRef) so that next time I use it it is correct. That is fine but what I want to do is to is to call the same function from within itself when it adds each node which would make it work automatically - it would keep calling instances of the function until it reached bottom and then go back one step at a time to the top but I cant work out how to reference the right value in the array to pass into the second (and subsequent) instances of the function.

I don't think I can simply pass (n) into the function and in the body of the function set LevelCount(n) = LevelCount(n)+1

I also dont know ahead of time how many layers the model will have, nor can I tell which layer a node sits in as it depends on the links that are dynamically configured.

Beyond this a node can also be subsidiary to nodes in more than one level so it needs to sit at the lowest level - but I suspect if I can work out how to do the first bit i can do this too.

How To Translate Number Into Specific Letter Related To Number

Feb 3, 2014

How to translate a specific number into a specific letter related to the number itself.

I have lots of different numbers for example all going down a specific cell (These numbers I want to separate into 3 different catagories. The positive numbers I want to be calculated as the same Letter that is next to that row directly over to the left of that cell.

So if the letter

B / cell / cell / +9 / Then I want if its a positive number like +9 to answer in the formula with the same letter (B) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course

B / cell / cell / -6 / Then I want if its any negative number like -6 to answer in the formula as the opposite Letter of (P) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course

P / cell / cell / +17 / Then I want if its a positive number like +17 to answer in the formula as the same letter (P) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course

P / cell / cell / -3 / Then I want if its a negative number like -3 to answer in the formula as the opposite Letter of (B) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course

and thirdly if its a (0) zero and only (zero's) Then I want the answer to stay (0) zero.

The number can be any numbers it doesn't matter. Only distinction is that positive number of +1 and up repeat and stay the same letter that the cell on the far left is already stated.

and all the negative number of -1 amd below all reverse the letter to the opposite letter of (B to a P) or (P to a B) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course

and of course (0) zero would be listed as a positive number and only return a (0) zero as the result of the formula.
