Multiple Nested IF & SUM Functions/Formulas

May 23, 2008

I am currently having trouble with what I thought was a simple IF statement. As you will see from the formula I want to complete a statement for every month of the year but Excel will not let me go past July. Is there a limit to the number of arguments in an IF statement and how do I overcome this? =IF($A$3="Jan'08", SUM(C7),IF($A$3="Feb'08",SUM(C7:D7),IF($A$3="Mar'08",SUM(C7:E7),IF($A$3="Apr'08",SUM(C7:F7),IF($A$3="May'08",SUM(C7:G7),IF($A$3="Jun'08",SUM(C7:H7),IF($A$3="Jul'08",SUM(C7:I7),"n/a")))))))

Multiple Condition Nested Logical Functions

Feb 17, 2014

I am having trouble evaluating two conditions with nested logical operators to produce the output I need.

For example Condition 1 has 5 choices (A,B,C,D,E) and Condition 2 has 3 choices (a,b,c).

Breaking it down,
[Condition 1] option "A" always applies and should give "Yes" (No matter [condition 2], "A" always gives "Yes")
[Condition 2] option "c" always applies and should give "Yes" (No matter [condition 1], "c" always gives "Yes")

[Condition 1] option "D" never applies and should give "No" (No matter [condition 2], "D" always gives "No")

[Condition 1] options "C" and "B" only apply if [condition 2] is "b" (if so, the answer is "Yes")

What I need is the equivalent of:

if ((([condition 1] == A) || ([Condition 2] == c)) || (([condition 1] == B || C) && ([condition 2] == b)), "Yes", "No")

Multiple "nested" Functions In A Spreadsheet -

May 25, 2009

I am trying to make a multiple nested spreadsheet. I get as far as the first 2 and then can't seem to get the data validation to work. I tried several different formulas (indirect(vlookup)) ones but must be doing something wrong. I have the "lists" on the second sheet to be referenced for the first sheet as drop down menus.

I do building material appraisals and this sheet will be to help me with the inspections if I ever get it done. It is supposed to work like this - Area - Item - then depending on the item - three consecutive dropdown lists with further information.

NESTED IF And AND Functions?

I am trying to write a formula that will satisfy the following:

C1 and G1 are number values.

IF (cell E1 does not contain any text) AND (G1-C1-12.5>=0), then output (G1-C1-12.5), otherwise output nothing (""). BUT, IF (cell E1 DOES contain text) AND (G1-C1-13>=0), then output (G1-C1-13), otherwise output nothing.

IF AND Functions Nested

Aug 20, 2008

I recently came across a spreadsheet an ex-employee wrote with an interesting IF-AND statement in it. The only way I've ever written one is:

=IF(AND(something=1, somethingelse>2), do something)

His statement was written in the following manner:

=IF(something=1*AND(somethingelse>2), do something, if(thing3>1*AND(thing4>1), do something)

Using Nested RANK Functions

Aug 7, 2006

I have a sales ladder which ranks my people by the % difference between budget and sales to date, but not everyone has made a sale yet and the % difference is zero for 6 people. These 6 people all have a rank of 75. Where this happens, I want to then rank only those 6 people, based on their budget figure.

My current formula reads:
=IF(F83=0,75,RANK($G83,$G$9:$G$83,0))
where F is the sales value and G is the % difference. Budget figures are in column D.

Nested Functions On Text

and its result I wanted is the following: 03048 (great! )
But... what if I'd have ANN03048-12?
Then the result would be N03048...

How can I obtain only 03048 or whatever (but only numbers) avoiding previous letters? How can I only pick numbers without letters starting from the left beginning of the record? I'd like to get only numbers before the "-" symbol. I think I should add a function before or instead of the "3" number (which I highlighted in red) in the second mid() function

Can anybody see, at a glance, how I can achieve the same result with at least one less nested function?

Nested IF And COUNTIFS Functions

Feb 23, 2010

I would like Excel to look at column A, and if there is a number0, count it and go to the next row. If it's =0, then go to column B and see if THAT number is 0. If it is, count it; if not, go to C. So my data looks like:

A B C
0 2 3
4 0 0
0 0 0

I only want it to count one time per row, so right now I am using =IF(COUNTIFS(A2:A30,"0",B2:B30,"0")0,COUNTIFS(A2:A30,"0",B2:B30,"0"),IF(COUNTIFS(B2:B30,"0",C2:C30,"0")0,COUNTIFS(B2:B30,"0",C2:C30,"0"),0)))

I also tried it with a SUMPRODUCT to simplify but both formulas are getting me the wrong answer. I'm using Excel 2007.

More Than 7 Nested IF's And Countif Formulas

Apr 13, 2007

I'm working on a formula that will determine the lowest number in a range.

The complication is that the range varies based on how many rows match a certain criteria.

The formula I have created works correctly, however, I need to have the range go up to 10, and because of the limit of 7 nested IF's, I have to stop at 6.

=IF(A2=A1,"",IF(COUNTIF($A:$A,A2)=1,G2,IF(COUNTIF($A:$A,A2)=2,MIN(G2:G3),IF(COUNTIF($A:$A,A2)=3,MIN(G2:G4),IF(COUNTIF($A:$A,A2)=4,MI N(G2:G5),IF(COUNTIF($A:$A,A2)=5,MIN(G2:G6),IF(COUNTIF($A:$A,A2)=6,MIN(G2:G7),"")))))))

After a result is returned from this formula, I have to do the almost exact same formula, based on the min value from these results.

PRODUCT Function With Nested IF Formulas

Dec 8, 2009

I receive montly investment performance projections going out monthly for 10 years. I need to show the return annually for each year. I created a SUMIFS formula to sum the percentages between two date ranges (beginning of the year and the end of the year for each year). However, my SUMIFS formula does not take into considersation compounding. How can I modify the SUMIFS formula I created to take into consideration compounding?

I know how to convert monthly percentages to an annual percentage, using the PRODUCT formula =PRODUCT(1+T15,1+U15,1+V15,1+W15,1+X15,1+Y15,1+Z15,1+AA15,1+AB15,1+AC15,1+AD15)-1, whereas T15:AD15 is the monthly percentage gain. Is there a simplier/alternative way that I can incorporate into the SUMIFS formula?

If it is too complicated to utilize a SUMIFS formula, I would like to be able to select a range of cells and have Excel calculate the result vs typing "1+[select the cell]," for each month. It takes me forever and open to input errors. It would be much easier to be able to select a range of cells when creating the formula.

Convert IF Functions To IF OR Formulas

Jun 12, 2008

To avoid manually updating a formula 100+ times, I am looking for a way to update cells in a column with reoccuring formulas with references to other cells that vary respectively from cell to cell. Meanwhile, there are other cells without formulas that this will not apply to in the same column. I am trying to avoid macros if possible, unless it can be easily understood/modified by someone who knows next to nothing about macros or VBA. My initial thought was to use the find/replace feature, but I don't know of any way to do this so the reference will update respectively for each cell (ie A9 then A10 etc.) in both the find and the replace fields.

ie
Find: A9="Text1"
Replace: OR(A9="Text1",A9="Text2")
Where the row number updates respectively.

Simplified example:

Existing:
=IF(A9="Text1","1","2")
[misc. blank or non-blank cell]
=IF(A10="Text1","1","2")
etc..................................

Nested If Formula, Lookups, Named Formulas

Jul 27, 2006

On a spreadsheet, I want my formula to caculate the following: if "certain cell" = "certain name", then do this calculation, if "certain cell" = "certain name", then do this calculation....and so on.

I have a drop down list of employees, which would be "certain name" and it is in a cell, which would be "certain cell". The calculation I want to do is if it is a certain employee, I want to take the manually inputted hours in another cell and multiple it by the employee's rate of pay, which would be it's own calculation including labour burden. I have 13 employees that I want to have as part of this. So, if the first valuation comes up false, it carries on to the next and so on until it finds one that matches. I have tried IF commands, but it is too long, so I tried to split it, didn't work. Tried lookup and it didn't work. Tried named formulas, didn't work. It is entirely possible that I am totally on the wrong track or in over my head, but I know this should work.

How To Build And Execute Formulas And Functions

Dec 10, 2012

how to build and execute formulas and functions. My love for messing with excel started with an interest in personal financial management utilizing amoritzation tables, budget planning, paychecks, tax bases, etc., My wife sees it as strange but I love messing around with the Excel formulas. For now it's all self taught but, as stated, that will be changing.

So far, I haven't been able to find how to execute the following scenario.

For brief background, I'm attempting to identify the results of various outcomes of an individual currency trade by changing the investment size given the results of the last "x" amount of trades. Put another way, I'm running data sets on Forextester wherein I trade a historical period of time on a specific set of currencies, i.e. "Pound/Dollar." I'm wanting to know what the resulting balances would be, or would have been, if I implemented a money management strategy that increased my investment on consecutive trades when there was an "x" number of consecutive "wins" (ending account balance more than beginning) on the previous "x" number of trades. and decreased my investment when there was an "x" number of consecutive losses (ending account balance less than beginning account balance) on "x" number of trades...

So far, I've built the formula so that if I input the beginning and ending balance of a specific trade and Excel populates a "W" or "L" (Win or Loss) in the "Results:" Cell which was pretty simple. The following is one of three scenarios.

Strategy
Conservative:

Start with risk 1% of Account balance (which is $10,000 for example)

The Rule: With each open trade reduce the account balance used by the amount risked on opened trade
(For consecutive trades, assume current trade results in a total loss of investment. Thus, $100.00 of the $10,000 accounts means you're working with $9,900 on next trade)

The Rule: After 3 consecutive winners that make (1.8 * Risk percent used by the trade * account balance used by the trade) or greater in profit, increase risk to 1.5%

First trade Investment: $100.00 plus minimum of 80% gain. Second Trade Investment: $99.00 plus minimum of

80% gain. Third Trade Investment: $98.00 plus minimum of 80% gain. For trade number four, the investment amount would now be 1.5% of the total account balance.

After 1 loss reduce risk to 1%
First Trade Investment $100.00 and you lose - size of loss doesn't matter. Next trade opens with investment of 1%.

After 2 consecutive losses reduce risk to 0.5%

First trade Investment $100.00 and you lose - size of loss doesn't matter. Next trade opens with investment of 1%. Second trade is also a loss. Thus, third trade invests 0.5% of total account balance.

After 4 consecutive losses reduce risk to 0.33%

After 2 consecutive wins that make (1.8 * 0.33%* account balance used by the trade) in profit, reset risk to 1%
(Two wins = 1% investment, regardless of number of previous losses

There are two additional scenarios but they all follow the same pattern. The differences are only in the actual risk percentage. I can modify the formula as needed.

Efficiency Of Custom Functions (UDF) Compared To Standard/Native Formulas

Sep 30, 2006

Assume I have a sheet consisting of 50 rows with 3 columns of figures. A fourth column contains a formula to calculate values, eg A1+B1+C1, on each line/row. I could enter A1+B1+C1 in the first cell and Copy, Paste to the other 49 cells. Alternatively, I replace A1+B1+C1 with a UDF.

Is there any difference in performance with using a UDF compared to using the long-hand/standard approach, or is it just a question of convenience? After all, both are doing the same operation with the same calculation.

Database Functions Vs. Array Formulas Vs. SUMPRODUCT Vs. Pivot Tables

Dec 13, 2006

All I am doing is counting text values in a table.

The table has 3 main columns(which are relevant to this thread anyway).

Shift - Area - Status

The example I have attached shows examples of DCOUNTA, SUMPRODUCT and a Pivot Table.

I have read many threads stating that the best one to use is Pivot Table followed by DCOUNTA followed by SUMPRODUCT.

The most effective for me seems to be SUMPRODUCT (although this does slow excel down dramatically when you use a lot of these formulas). As do Array Formulas

The Pivot Table does not update on its own, therefore constantly needs to be refreshed. (I could use code to do this)

The DCOUNTA seems to be the least effective at doing what I want (unless I am doing something wrong)

In the attached example can the DCOUNTA be used more efficiently as I don't like the fact that I am duplicating rows to apply the criteria for a different shift. e.g

Area 1 - Late Shift - Banned
Area 1 - Early Shift - Banned

I want my table to be as follows (as the SUMPRODUCT shows)

AREA - Early Shift - Late Shift - Night Shift - Area Total
Area 1
Area 2
Area 3
Area 4
Area 5

Shift Total
