Calculate The Cells In Sheet Containing A Large Number Of Array Formulas
Oct 14, 2008
I I have a excel document which has a sheet containing a large number of array formulas.
I turned the automatic calculation off.
However, even when I press F9 to calculate the cells it just crunches, gets stuck at “Calculating 0%” and then crashes.
The majority of the array formulas are IF queries with multiple criteria.
Would it speed up the calculation if I didn’t use array formulas?

I am trying to calculate a matrix of array formulas that is roughly 365 x 137, or about 50,000 cells being calculated from a range of roughly 12,000 x 137. There are multiple if statements within the array formula, and then those 50,000 cells are referenced to another, but smaller matrix of array formulas (25 x 137). Each of these matrix sets is for one year, and there are three years that need calculated.
Problem: When calculating the 50,000 cells it takes roughly 2.5 hours to complete all calculations. So, for 3 years it will take roughly one work day of tying up my computer to just compile data that will then require several days of calculation/manipulation.
Question(s): Is there a way to speed this up to a reasonable amount of time (I'd even take 30 minutes at this point)? Or, is Excel simply the wrong tool to be using for this amount of data? Do I need a better machine to run these calculations? I am currently using a Dell XT3 with 2.5 Ghz i5 quad core processor.

i have a spreadsheet with a certain data (rate of return) associated to a specific day of a year. (ex. 8-dec.-08 0.99865), and i have to calculate the rate of return (r) for every month, which is done by applying a formula (GEOMEAN) to all the rate of returns for the days of a month (ex. GEOMEAN(r[01 dec.]:r[31 dec.])).
i don't have any problems with that part. the hard part is that i have every single trading day from jan 00 to dec 08 (2000+ days), and i do not want to manually select the ranges. also, the dates do not include weekends (trading days per year = 252) which means that i cant (a) automatically determine a range or (b) automatically associate a number of days to a month (ex. oct 08 doesn't have the same amount of days as oct 07, because of the way week-ends and holidays are arranged..)

I am looking for ideas on how to speed-up one workbook. I have a spreadsheet with hundreds of lookup formulas and array formulas which are very slow to recalculate (takes around 5 min). Good thing about it is that these formulas are located in a specific range and that I need to run them only once a day (in the morning). Since I need to refresh the rest of the spreadsheet frequently, I am looking for an idea on how to isolate this resource heavy areas.
One solution I've been thinking about is moving these complex and slow formulas to VBA and run them only when needed. Can anybody assist me with the best and easiest way of doing this. Ideally I would want to leave option to the user to later edit this formula. Does anybody have any experience with weather it is best to migrate complete formulas to VBA or maybe leave formulas in the spreadsheet and run them based on predefined flag (that I can switch on or off from the code)?

My excel (2003) is stuck in array mode - is there any way to get it out of Array Mode and put it back in the letter:number display for formulas/functions? It's doing this in VBA too which is totally killing me.

I would like to ask the formulas for this... for example:
$35 .. discount 10% + 25%
instead of having so many cells to calculate $40 x (100%-10%) = $36
$36 x (100% - 25%) = $27

What i'm trying to do is to check a large number of cells, if "0" is written down in that cell it stays as it is and if the number is different from "0" i want to put a "1" instead.

I heard there is an efficient way of writing large amounts of data at once to a worksheet. My program is writing alot of data (e.g. 600+ items in each row) and takes over an hour to run because it writes to each cell one-at-a-time. I seached this forum and couldn't find the answer. Here is an excerpt from an old 1998 article by Dermot Balson and William Mercer that used code to write to cells in large chunks but it doesn't work for me - I get a method failed message.
'to read in
Dim A As Variant 'MUST be variant, no brackets
A = Range("SomeRange").Resize(10,20) 'reads 10x20 array starting at range SomeRange
'(NB I've used Resize above but you can specify a range of cells any way you want)
'to write back to sheet
Range("SomeRange").Resize(10,20) = A
'A can be any data type but MUST be two dimensional even if you are only writing one
'column or row - first dimension is used for rows, and the second for columns
'this can be slow - see third question below for workaround..
Here is the link to the article: http://www.avdf.com/apr98/art_ot003.html. A more detailed explanation how this trick works

I would like to write a macro that links cells in one workbook (working) to cells in another workbook (summary).
I don't want this to be a straight swap thought, I'd like it to contain the following formula:
=IF(Working!G8="a","a","")
The cells in the working workbook are listed vertically, while the cells in the summary workbook are listed horizontally.
ie. link G8-G18 in working to B3-K3 in summary
link H8-H18 in working to B4-K4 in summary
...etc

I have a sheet that contains rows containing letter codes for example "CU". This is generated by an IF formula i.e. If true = "CU". However I need to be able to calculate the number of instances of "CU" but sumproduct will not work as it sees the cell as containing a formula not the result i.e. "CU". Sumproduct code:

=IF(AF8="","",INDEX($A$3:$A$102,AGGREGATE(15,6,(ROW($L$3:$L$103)-ROW($L$3)+1)/($L$3:$L$103=AF8),COUNTIF($AF$8:AF8,AF8))))

Calculate the number of rows used in sheet. for exa: i have A1:A100 i want that B1=100 and if i delete some of rows the number of rows in B1 auto-change. and can let B2 display the number of rows deleted.
i have 2 sheets now, can the Cell C1 in sheet 2 display the number of rows in the sheets, B1 in sheet1 + B1 in sheet 2

So in Cell K12 there is a rather large formula (I condensed it for this example).
This formula is to average out the respective cells in column J. For each cell there is a possibility of 9 different entries. NRT, N/O, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
So based on the formula in K12 I need Cell J12 to Display the answer.
if any one of the Cells referenced in the formula are NRT then I need it to Display NRT. Which the Formula does now.
The problem comes in when a Cell is N/O (Not Observed)
How do I get the formula to Ignore N/O currently I have it set up to recognize N/O as 0. But excel averages 0 in and it affects the answer.
I know in a simple formula I can add <>0 to the formula to ignore zeros. How to write it into a bigger formula such as in K12.
For example the current numbers in Cells J17:J25 should average 5 however the formula averages it as 1 because it calculates N/O as 0.

I am accustomed to using filters to find a lot of my information in large datasets.
However, now I am trying to use formulas to return specific values. For simplicity's sake, I have included a sample below with a couple types of scenarios I am looking to solve through the use of formulas. Would this involve sub-arrays perhaps?

I have one excel sheet with columns from A to LZ and number of rows.
Each column have only letter (one of A,B,C,D,E). This if for weekly table:
COLUMN define: Mon-Sun
ROWS define: work type (A B C or D)
For example;
COLUMNS: Su-Mo-Tu-We-Th-Fr-Sa-Su-Mo-......
ROWS: A -A - B - B - B - B - B -C - C - ......till column LZ.
Issue:
I want a formula for any row, from which, I can calculate (for that particular row) number of B's on Mo-Tu right from column A till LZ.

how to return the top 5 results in a set of data.
In a nutshell, I have data that needs to be sorted but some intermediate to advanced (to me) excel formula needs to be used to sort the ranking properly. I've already used index, match and large but it does not suffice.

I have a range of purchase order rows, with the formulas stored in the first row (TemplateRow) which is hidden. The users may add any number of rows to this range, depending upon the number of different products being purchased.
Code:
'Copy the template row into the first newly inserted row
Rows(TemplateRow).Copy Destination:=Rows(insertionPoint)
'fill down from the inserted row down to the last new row
With Rows(InsertionPoint & ":" & NumberOfInsertedRows.Rows.Hidden = False
.FillDownEnd With
The problem is copying the formulas down to the new rows can take terribly long (minutes) in scenarios of thousands of products. Is there a faster method of copying down my formulas?

Column E contains the colors of the homes for sale.
Column Q contains the values of the homes.
I want to return the sum of the 50 most expensive homes that are yellow and for sale by Century 21.
I'm familiar with array formulas, and with the large function. I just do not know how to incorporate the large function within the sum/array formula.

Hi again, I am trying to find the easiest way to repeatedly search a large matrix (300,400) for a particular value. I have used two for loops in the past but its starting to get complicated now. Is there a workaround using application.worksheets.something that I could get a true of false reply? Someone may suggest that I create a function that replys back. I am new to VB and I am not sure how to send a matrix of integers to a function (syntax).

Excel 2010
Sheet 1 contains range B12:B353 with names of people. Sheet 2 range B12:B353 contains a formula to extract the names from Sheet 1 if range D12:D353 contains a certain value:
=IF(Sheet1!D12:D354="A",(Sheet1!B12:B353)," ")
At the bottom of each column in Sheet 2 I am trying to get a total count of populated cells (a running count of names actually visible). I have inserted formula:
=COUNTA(B12:B353)
Which should count the number of cells with text in them, right? But I believe it's somehow counting the formula as text because I inserted the value of "A" in Sheet 1 Column D for 3 names. It returned a number of 331 at the bottom of my column in Sheet 2. First off, a return of 331 doesn't make sense in any way (still scratching my head at this return. It should have returned a value of 3.

I have a sheet (sheet2) that has cells in column L, M and N referencing cells in another sheet (sheet1)(same workbook).
If I delete a row out of Sheet1 it causes the formula in Sheet2 to go to #REF.
Normally the formula would be something like
='Sheet1'!L13
How can I get these formulas to not change just because cells where deleted from Sheet1?

I have 3 columns (B,D,F) that have 15 minute data intervals and I need to calculate the hourly averages for each column but here is the catch, I need to do this from July-1-2011 00:00:00 to Sept-31-2011, 24:00:00 (that's 26,217 data points and 6,554 =average() calculations......
IS there syntax I could use that would calculate the average every 4-cells so I could get the hourly average without having to type =average(XX:XX) 6,554 times?
Example of set-up:
29-Sep-11
23:00:00
0.820412164= AVERAGE(B8735:B8738)
0.762574274 =average(D8735:D8738)
84.98389991 =average(F8735:F8738)
29-Sep-11 23:15:00 0.819168591

For instance, in my data set if I have something similar to below. How would I calculate variance in the different regions? Is it possible to automate this process? Also could the Analysis ToolPAk be used instead or in conjunction?

I'm trying to do a binomial distribution summation as part of a VBA function, and have been using the Application.WorksheetFunction.BinomDist function, which works fine until the numbers get large - the binomial coefficients used in the calculation end up being larger than can be held in a double floating-point number in VBA, so excel can't handle it. The final result of the calculation is a probability, so it's not a huge number! I was wondering if anyone knows an alternate way of calculating binomial probabilities which avoid any huge number intermediates.

In the next column, it's counting up the number of hours since that entry was made. However, it's including Saturdays and Sundays in this count and I was wondering if there's a formula to calculate the number of hours excluding Saturdays and Sundays? I know that network days would count the number of working days from one date to the next, but really need hours. Is this possible?

I have a form in work which acts as a tick sheet for tasks complete on a construction site. When a task is complete I copy & paste from a key of dates i.e. week ending 11.05.15, this allows me to see what week a task was complete.
Generally I only marked off tasks which were 100% complete but my manager wants me to enter the % of the task complete also, i.e. 80% in the box.
So my question is how can I have the formula assume that any box with a date & shading is 100% and any cell with a number i.e. 80 is only 80% complete. I need it to monitor around 150 cells and give me the overall % complete based on what i have discussed.
