Assigning A String As Range
Apr 3, 2008
I have the following string which I want to assign to my rngTAddress (dim as range) variable.
='M:1 - Schedules & Spreadsheets[04 Subcontractor Cumulative Billing Tracker.xls]LCD'!$AZ$79
This string is current stored in the strTargetRange variable.
How do I get rngTAddress to refer to this cell in another workbook by assigning this string as the range?
Ultimately I want to use rngTAddress.offset(-2,0) in a formula.

Cell A1: can contain any number between 1 and 4 (with two decimal places, i.e. 2.36 or 3.99)
Cell A2: based on what number is in A1, this field should return corresponding percentage (%), based on the following criteria:
1: is 100%
2.99: 1%
3 (including) and less (all the way to 4): 0%
Note: percentages between values 1 and 2.99 are equally spread
So let's say, when:
A1 is 1.00, then A2 should return 100%
A1 is 3.26, then A2 should return 0%
A1: is 1.25, then A2 should return 92% (or whatever percentage is correct based on above described criteria)

I have been working on some ODBC queries in Excel 2010.
First, I recorded them using Excel's Record Macro function, to get an idea of what sort of source data I would need. Then, I rewrote them into something a little more intelligible.
Pulling out all the sensitive info, I want to know how to add the .ListObject.DisplayName property back onto the results of the query. I tried doing it intuitively, but it didn't work. It was in there when I recorded the macro, but I can't seem to figure out where to put it back into the re-written code. Other parts of the code depend on the results of the query being a 'named field'.
[Code] .....
Also, where would I find out what all that stuff in Cnnect means? DBA, APA, EXC, FEN, etc are all just assignments, and I might like to change some to make this run a bit quicker, if I knew what they meant.

I searched and found that to assign a name to a label based on a cell value requires the following
Label1.Caption = Worksheets("Sheet1").Range("A1").Value
which would assign the value in cell A1 as the caption for Label1. I've got a range of values in cells:
C4:N4
and I'd like to assign them as names to labels 1 through 12. How would I do that using VBA?

I need to state whether a particular word, string or text in one cell, appears anywhere in a sheet.
Attached example: does the word AAAAAA in cell A10, appear anywhere in the range A3:A6
I need to be able to drag this formula so need a generic formula rather than adding specific text in speech marks to it.

I am working on a project where I need to remove records based on certain criteria.
The key pieces of information here are the Company ID, the Contact ID, and the Product Codes. Each Company ID can have multiple Contact IDs, and each Contact ID and have multiple Product Codes. (To be more clear, imagine one company with a Tax department and an Audit department - with each department having a separate contact person. And, each contact person purchasing multiple products.)
I have already summarized the data by identifying the unique Contact IDs and combining the corresponding Product Codes into a string.
Now, I need to determine if any Product Code within the summarized string matches a Product Code in a separate list (a Range of cells). If so, each instance of the Company ID needs to be moved into a different tab. Also, to understand the magnitude of my records, I am working with 25,000+ unique records in the first tab, 8,000+ summarized records in the second tab, and 50+ product codes in the separate range in the third tab.
My first thought was to use a For loop to determine if any cell in the Range is found in each string and, if so, add the related Company ID to a dictionary object. Then, run another For loop against the Company IDs in the summarized tab (8,000+ records) to determine if the ID exists in the dictionary and, if so, moving the row to another tab.
My second thought was using the original data (unique records) - I would load all the Product Codes in the separate Range into one dictionary and run that dictionary against the individual Product Codes in the unique records tab (25,000+ records). If the Product Code in the unique records is found in the dictionary, I would add the related Company ID to another dictionary. Then, I would run a For loop comparing the second dictionary to the Contacts IDs in the summarized tab and move the ones that exist.
In summary, the two ways I have come up with to accomplish what I need includes:
1) a For loop, a dictionary, and another For loop
2) two dictionaries and a For loop

Dim myStart As Range
Dim myIRR As String
Dim myR1 As Range
Dim myR2 As Range

myIRR = Range("IRRStart").Offset(0, myMatch).Address
' myR1 = myIRR value
' myR2 = myCell value
Range(myR1).GoalSeek Goal:=0.25, ChangingCell:=Range(myR2)

I'm working in Excel 2003. Is there a way to convert strings to Ranges on the Excel commandline?
I have a lookup function in an estimate sheet that uses 2 ranges, stored as strings, in another worksheet. They are used to return a price from another workbook. When I use named ranges to access them with the lookup function, it doesn't work. But when I cut and paste the strings into the commandline it works prefectly?
$A10 = Part Number to search for
MaterialOptions is a named Range
eg: '[Catalog.xls]PriceList'!$A$13:$A$17
PriceOptions is a named Range
eg: '[Catalog.xls]PriceList'!$Z$13:$Z$17
LOOKUP($A10,MaterialOptions,PriceOptions) = #VALUE!
But...
LOOKUP($A10,'[Catalog.xls]PriceList'!$A$13:$A$17,'[Catalog.xls]PriceList'!$Z$13:$Z$17) = Success!

I'm having trouble setting the Range "UtilizationRange" using a variable, "CurrentRange" to store that range. I get the error "Run-Time error 1004: Method 'Range' of object'_Global' failed".The rest of my code works when I set the utilization range using the actual range for my purposes, but the problem is the range will change each month and I don't want to change it manually each time. There's a cell in the excel sheet this refers to (AG3) that holds the range value, which in this case is [N7:N75], and I would just like to return that value to the variable "CurrentRange" and set UtilizationRange equal to that.
The value is returned to CurrentRange, but it's the last line that's giving me the problem.
Sub RangeTest()Dim UtilizationRange As Range, Cell As RangeDim CurrentRange As String
CurrentRange = Range("AG3").Value MsgBox (CurrentRange)
'This returns the value [N7:N75], which is what I want
Set UtilizationRange = Range("CurrentRange")End Sub

I am playing around with code to extract stock prices from Yahoo! Finance.
The data is extracted from Yahoo in the form of a CSV string, for example:
"HSBC HLDG",596.80,"-0.22%"
I've written code to split the string into cells as I'd like, but just realised that if I copy the above text manually from the Immediate Window (on the back of a Debug.Print) and paste it anywhere on the worksheet Excel automatically splits the string and reformats the values.
Although my code works perfectly I was wondering whether there is a shorter way of doing this, i.e. by just coding up the above action? I've tried a few routes but haven't found a solution yet.

I feel like I should be be able to do something like Join(Range(XX)," ") to create a space-separated string of values...
Have I missed an easy one-liner, versus one by one concatenating the value from each cell?
In this case, I am doing exactly that - taking 4 columns of more or less unimportant data and cramming them into a single column just in case they are needed someday.
Sub Test()
Dim strTemp As String
strTemp = _
Range("C2").Value & " " & _
Range("D2").Value & " " & _
Range("E2").Value & " " & _
Range("F2").Value
'//Result: strTemp = "a b c d"
'//This fails - is it possible to do something like this
strTemp = Join(Range("C2:F2"), " ")
End Sub

Dim rng, dest, c As Range
Dim result As String
Worksheets("sheet1").Activate
Set rng = Range([a1], [a1].End(xlDown))
Set dest = Range("d1")
result = ""
For Each c In rng
result = result & " " & c
Next
MsgBox result
dest = result
End Sub
the penultimate code statement "dest=result" does notwork the value of "result" is not entered in "dest" though no error comes up if I use "dest.value=result" it gives error "object required" If I use "range("d1")=result" it works.what is the theoretical mistake.

if I have a column of 5 cells (E1-E5) that contain a single character, how would I search a range of columns and rows (A1/5 - D1/5) with these?
So if E1-E5 each contain "1", i would like to return true when one (or more) of the A - D columns also contain "1" in each of its cells.
Columns A - D will contain a string of more than one character so it needs to search the string.
e.g.
E1 = 1
E2 = 1
E3 = 1
E4 = 1
E5 = 1 and
A1 = 123
A2 = 134
A3 = 142
A4 = 412
A5 = 213
I would like this to return true because the A cells do contain the values in the E cells.
I guess this is like looking for duplicates but with a search string twist!

I have a long string that has a list of digits in the middle that I want to extract. The string is variable length and the number of digits I want to extract is 5-7. I also have slashes in between the numbers I want to extract. I need a UDF that allows me to extract the 5-7 digit number from the string and restrict around the slashes (i.e. if two sets of digits in the string match the condition for extraction, extract the one around the slashes.) For example my original data is like
1. aaa/12345/aaa/123
2. aaaaa/123456/aaaaaa/3423
3. 323/aa/1234567/aa
and I want for results
1. 12345
2. 123456
3. 1234567
Is there a UDF that allows me to do this?

I have a spreadsheet with column headers like, "Date" "Phone number" "Name" ect., and rows of data below. Each of these rows contains data pertaining to a prospect employee, as the purpose of the spreadsheet is to keep track of job applicants. One column is used as a 'Recruiter Sign-off' area, where the recruiter who processed the application inputs their name:
Example.png
I'm trying to automate a variation of excels sort function. However, I don't want to sort 'From A to Z.' Instead, I want to have the rows of data sorted with the 'Recruiter Sign-off' column used as the sort Key, and a selected name (of one of the recruiters) used as the sort Criteria.
I already have a userform that allows the user to select a name from a listbox. When they press confirm, the name is stored in a Public String variable, (selectedRecruiter). I'd like then like to have the rows below the column headers to be sorted based on the selected name. Example: User selects the name "Jon" from a list. The application then brings all of the applicants that 'Jon' has signed off on (those rows that contain his name) to the top rows of the range.
The workbook is shared, so I cannot use tables.
I found a code that accomplished what I want, however it also leads to a horrible system crash after a few times running it (BEX crash).

Following problem:
I have a list of changes on our bankaccount.
Sometimes, in the description a payment we receive the name of the person who transferred the amount is mentionned.
It can be anywhere in the string, it can be just his/her first name, it can be his/her full name...
I also have a list of all our clients with first name in column A, second name in column B
Something like this:
string from bancaccount:
EUROPESE OVERSCHRIJVING VAN BE16 6712 5615 7974 BANKIER OPDRACHTGEVER: EURBBE99 VANDERSMISSEN WILLY VAN PLAKSTRAAT 176 9000 GENT 68/10762827 PENSIOEN REFERENTIE: OV-0000236-00240
client list
Francois D'hondt
Germaine Canipel
Willy Vandersmissen
Karel D'hondt
.
.
.
I'd like VBA to search in the clientlist for names that occur in the bankaccount string.
Sice ther might be a lot of Willy's in the client lsit I think it will be best to serch for the combination of both first and second name.
Once found the name the procedure should return the rownumer on which the client can be found in the client list.

ActiveWorkbook.Names.Add Name:="Wk" & numWeeks, RefersTo:=Wk(numWeeks)
I have many more cases and have defined Wk(5) as a Range. What I am really after it is possible to to name the range using something similar to the code above that uses a predefined variable in the naming process.
