Catch/Trap Formula Errors

Sep 15, 2006

I am trying to find some solution on frequent errors , that come up when one copy, or drag formulae.
Sometime the error doesn’t appear on surface, but after digging you realize that some formula is not pointing to correct
cells.

I want to create a macro which will do following things :

1. It will go to each cell in the selected range, and compare the cell’s formula with that of the cell on its right and left.
2. If the formulae are not similar it should change the color of that cell.

Basically, I am trying to catch logical errors. However I don’t know how to approach this problem? Is there any in-built functionality in Excel that can do this task ?

Formula To Find Errors

Jan 15, 2010

I need a formula that will check a few things and if it finds an error the word error will appear in the cell, the details of which are in the attached spreadsheet.

I have worked on this a great deal and cannot seem to make a formula with the proper logic. There is a sample of an error in the spreadsheet.

Comparison Formula - Including Inherent Errors

Oct 5, 2009

I have two columns that I want to compare - but one of them is the result of a VLOOKUP - so it may actually contain the #N/A error - how can I compare them so that:

if col 1 agrees with col 2, then "yes" is returned
if col 1 does not agree with col 2 but the VLOOKUP in col 2 has NOT returned an error (so it's still a valid comparison) then "NO" is returned
if col 2 shows a VLOOKUP #N/A error then "NO" is returned

or, perhaps more straightforwardly:

Col 1 = ABC, col 2 = ABC then return "YES"
Col 1 = ABC, col 2 = DEF then return "NO"
Col 1 = ABC, col 2 = #N/A then return "NO"

Excel 2002 :: Formula To Display All Errors?

May 27, 2012

In a worksheet the data (text or numerical) from five columns are compared using the following formula.

=IF($A10$G10,"1ERROR",IF($B10$H10,"2ERROR",IF($C10$I10,"3ERROR",IF($D10$J10,"4ERROR",IF($E10$K10,"5ERROR","-")))))

The formula is working well. The problem is I get the result for the first column of error even if the error is in more than one column. I want the result should display all the errors with the column number 1, 2, 3 (or with column name A, B, C etc). The total number of error is not required. The exact columns which have the error should be displayed. For example if the error exists in 3, 4 and 5 columns, I should get the result as "345Error" or "CDEError".I use excel 2002.

Formula To Calculate Result Whilst Avoiding Errors Is Too Long!

Jan 22, 2010

I have a formula I've been using for a long time which uses VLOOKUP to find results based on various reference cells, and then adds them up. To avoid errors caused by VLOOKUP not finding anything for one of the references I have also used ISERROR. The formula returns a blank if the calculation returns a zero.

I now need to bring further references in to the calculation but, using the format I have been, the formula is now too long. Here is my extensive formula:

Freezing Row With Catch?

I am looking to freeze row 18 in an excel sheet, however in doing so this really limits the amount of rows below row 18 that can be viewed and scrolled through.

I would like to know if there is any way that you could freeze row 18 and when you scroll down on the worksheet, you can scroll down past rows 1-17 and when row 18 reaches the top row it would lock there? And you would then be able to continue scrolling down the worksheet beyond row 18..

Catch Deleted Row

I want to catch if the user has deleted a row. There is a need to know when a row is deleted and what the data was in that row. So, what I'm trying to do if a row is deleted is to undo the action and then change the font of all data in that row to have the strikethrough effect. This will enable others looking at the workbook to know that the information in the row existed but is no longer relevent.

So, the code is something like this:If row deleted Then
Application.Undo
Target.Font.Strikethrough = True
End If

Error Trap Always Executing

May 22, 2009

The error trap does work when there is an error, but it also runs at the end of the code when there isn't an error... I'm not sure what I've done wrong. When I test with data that is correct, it still runs through the code when it gets to the bottom. Have I put the error trap in the wrong place?

I have put in bold the section of the code with the error trap.

Emulating Try / Catch Procedure In VBA

May 6, 2014

I have a VBA procedure in Excel that opens PowerPoint presentations and searches each slide for embedded objects, opens, and attempts to save the objects as separate files utilizing the following statement:

Shape.OLEFormat.DoVerb Count

Where Count is the "Open" verb. 90% of the time it works great but there are times where the object simply wont open so the application just stops. I don't get any errors so I don't see how I can trap for this incident.

What I would like to do is emulate something similar to C#'s Try/Catch function.

Is there a way to do something like this in VBA?

Catch 22 - I.e. Last Entered Value In A Given Range

Oct 7, 2008

let's suppose I have a prefixed range like A1:A300 in which periodically I need to enter some records (normally numbers but also sometime blank cells - i.e. void no entries); so imagine you have an array of cells in which I want to catch by mean of a formula or a macro the last entered significative record (i.e. a number); the objective is obviously to catch the last significative record in that given range having numbers in it (i.e. leaving out any blank cells in between); no other clues to approach the problem are given: do you think it's possible to sort out somehow this tricky problem ?

example:

1
34
67
#
45
#
#
545
#
22

where # stands for blank cell

how to catch 22?

Error Trap: Macro Opening Non Existing File

I have a user form with a TextBox (TextBox1), the user enters a filename and presses CommandButton1, this then opens the file. I have set an error trap so that if the file does not exist a MsgBox prompts the user to re-enter. So far so good, however if the error trap operates any further files entered are declared as non-existent even if I know they exist. I thought this would be quite easy but once again VBA bites me back!!

stFilename = "Retention" & "" & TextBox1 & ".xls"
stFullname = stPath & "" & stFilename 'completes full path of for TextBox1

File Cannot Be Accessed - Process Crashes- Programmatically Trap The Condition

Apr 19, 2007

Workbook A has VBA code. The VBA code opens a collection of 2000 workbooks. The workbooks are processed one at a time, with Workbook A opening Workbook B, do something, close Workbook B, get next workbook. Sometimes Workbook B has some kind of access issue that results in:

"[File Name] cannot be accessed. The file may
be read-only, or you may be trying to
access a read-only location. Or, the
server the document is stored on may
not be responding.
RETRY ... CANCEL"

If RETRY is clicked, the process returns the same message. If CANCEL is clicked, the process is crashed, Excel is closed, and all data processed is lost. What is the VBA syntax to programmatically trap this condition so it can be processed in an orderly manner?
