Copy Number From Text

Dec 3, 2009

I'm running Excel 2003. I have a workbook and in Column L I have a text description that includes one or more 5 or 8 digit catalog id's. What I want to do, using a function or vba, is to copy the id and paste it into Column M.

In cases where there are multiple id's I would want all of them to be entered into the same cell.

Example:

00123456

12345

All of the 8 digit id's have either 2 or 3 leading zereos that must be retained.

I've attached a sample spreadsheet. Thanks in advance for any pointers and/or assistance.

Is there a function that allows you to read column A for an ID (these may or may not include letters/numbers/"?", are non-sequential and are of variable lengths) and, if it is the first time that it has seen an ID column B will read "sample_1_arm_1", if its the second time it has seen an id it will read "sample_2_arm_1", etc? Performing IF Cell Contains Number THEN Copy That Number ELSE Give 0

Jun 14, 2013

Looking for a way to search an active cell (that has been found using macro) for numerical data and if there is some present paste this in a different location

If there is no numerical data in this this cell then paste a 0 in a different location

An example of the string contained in the cell

Product 7.5% wheat <- i would want 7.5 (or 7.5%) copied to a different cell
or
Product X <- i would want a 0 copied to the cell the 7.5 would be in from the above

I can find the cell to search in, i just do not know the correct way to extract the information I need.

Format Small Number Of Cells From Text To Number?

Mar 19, 2014

Text to Number or General.xlsx

The included, small database is formatted as text. It is a text feed from an outside source. I simply want to format the cells into either numbers or general format but not text... seems simple, and it should be, but the only way I can get this done is to go to each cell and access the formula bar and re-enter the number by pressing Enter.

Automatic Update Of Cell Text Based On Item Number (also Text)?

Mar 28, 2014

I have a column C with different text in cells (item's title). Column D - relevant description for each of the items. 100+ rows.

Now, unfortunately, often a spreadsheet with items is updated with many new items. So I get a new spreadsheet with old and new items mixed. I need, somehow, to import descriptions of the old items (Column D of the old spreadsheet) to the new spreadsheet from old spreadsheet. So I want excel to look for old items in column A of the new spreadsheet and, once found, insert a description in the column B from old spreadsheet.

See attachment : Example for forum.xlsx

Insert Text In Front Of Text OR Number - User Defined Format

Sep 24, 2008

I can't seem to make user-defined format that puts a text in front of a number and/or a text.

Let's say I have A1: 13, A2: texttext A3: text7 and I want to format a lot of cells to "Ilike 13" / "Ilike texttext" / "Ilike text7"... ie add the same text in the front of the cell, no matter what the content is.

I did manage it seperately, with "texttext" @ for text and "texttext" # for numbers, but what's the general one?

The problem is that when I import in the data, the data in column B&C will be store as text instead of number and the date in column E will store a 2 digit year instead on 4 digit year which cause error to my macro. I have try to preset the column format to number, i even try to change the column format to number when i run the format macro data. But the problem is still there.

Importing Text File (excel Treat Row Of Text As Number)

Dec 1, 2007

I created a vb macro to open a text file then process the file then close the file. Here is my problem:

Problem: THe text file has rows of data in it as follows

5155111111551511111111111511111111111111111

This row of text gets converted to

5.16E+42

because excel treats the row of text as a number but i dont want it to do this transition.

When i save the file and then reopen it using say NOTEPAD i see 5.16E+42 and not the long string of text.

Excel 2003 :: Take Specific Text From Cell And Copy It In New One (Text And / Or Words Position Varies)

Jan 17, 2013

I'm having a 6000+ records, (contacts DB) exported in Excel 2003 format from MS Outlook.

Except the "First" and "LastName", all other contact elements are in the field "Notes" (which is the BZ column according to the exported outlook layout) multiplied by 6469 (records in total)

Useful information are included !!!

I'll give an example of a record...

Column: BZ, Row: 543 says --> "2110000000-6989000000, 1TOK_TER:17-11-010(25 DAYS LESS),
KATERINA 25 (MANTAS KALNNNNN_HYPERTENSION)1000-150, W:95_105, , HR THE 16wks_US NEFRON OK,
NT OK_B EPIP OK(GOLF BALL)_KAMPILI ORIAKI(DIAITA)_DOPPLER OK, O+,TEST OK(TOX_), , , , , , "

Now, I want every time to take the part of the text says "TER:something..." (part of which is date, but not every time with the known format dd-mm-yyyy, as you see here is yyy, followed by something else, with parenthesis here and maybe more data) and copy it in a new cell..., e.g:CO Column, same Row...

Above and every field which by the way is formatted as General (and it is text mainly) are made by merging older excel fields where data laid here and there, that's why you see the commas...with the method of a module with the following code:

Function MyMerge(Rng As Range)
For Each Cell In Rng
Temp = Temp & Cell.Value & ", "
Next Cell
Temp = Mid(Temp, 1, Len(Temp) - 2)
MyMerge = Temp
End Function

Note1:Records with the above string (TER:dd-mm-yyy) are 771 from 6469.
Note2: As an alternative solution I can see an extraction of the TER:dd-mm-yyy string and the copy in a new place, like the:CO Column, same Row...

Autofill; Copy Down It Doesn’t Automatically Update The Cell References Because It Want To Update Them By Column Number Instead Of Row Number

Dec 11, 2008

I have a basic formula =C17+'Asset Depreciation 2008 Onwards'!C24, and I want to copy it down just using the drag function. Problem is that the second reference range of cells are in rows and hence when I copy it down it doesn’t automatically update the cell references because it want to update them by column number instead of row number. IE I want it to display =C17+'Asset Depreciation 2008 Onwards'!
D24, instead of C25. Do you know if there is any way of telling Excel that I want it to increase the column number by 1 every time, instead of the row number for this part of the formula?

Looping, Open Text File, Copy Text, Close Text File

Sep 18, 2009

I have an existing spreadsheet with a column of strings (actually VIN numbers). These numbers correllate to a bunch of text files, that can exist in one of three folders (UsernameDesktop1, 2, or 3) on my desktop. What I need the macro to do is:

1) get the filename from A2 (A1 is a heading row)
2) Find the appropriate text file in one of the three folders
3) Put the folder name into I2
4) Scan the text file for some strings, and copy some data that follows those strings into J2:O2 (I can handle programming this)
5) Close the text file
6) repeat above for the remainder of filenames (about 1800 files)

Copy First X Number Of Worksheets And More?

Nov 30, 2011

I have 20+ tabs that need to be copied monthly. That also means 40+ name changes (when you copy you get "copy of...". I am trying to get this down so I am hoping for the better. Anyways what the macro needs to do is copy the first x amount (lets say 3 for this demo) tabs (true full copy, formulas and all)

(YYYYMM Name) -- This is the setup, it is not current month, I do not mind inputting the YYYYMM if need be)

201010 Tab 1
201010 Tab 2
201010 Tab 3

To

201011 Tab 1
201011 Tab 2
201011 Tab 3

Then a popup at asks current reporting date (again this is not current date) for these new tabs only (all these tabs have a date field that needs to be updated) So I assume this will have to store an array of the tabs created. Date WILL go in the same row/column in all tabs.

Then copy paste values all prior months tabs to preserve the history in the old tabs

201010 Tab 1
201010 Tab 2
201010 Tab 3

Now 20+ tabs doing this for you can see how im about to lose my mind. I am stressing them to downsize this mess, so the X number would need to be a value i could mess with in code.

If it wants to just read for the tabs that start with the asked for or current YYYYMM that's fine with me. That way I don't have to input a number.
