Jul 1, 2008I receive spreadsheets which tell me where samples are located in 96 well plates. The plates' rows are lettered A-H, and the columns are numbered 1-12. So, for example, the first well is labeled A1, the 12th is A12, the 13th is B1, and the 96th is labeled H12.
When I receive the spreadsheets, there are cells that tell me which wells are occupied. For example a cell will contain "A2 - B7" or "D3-F12" (sometimes with the spaces before and after the "-", and sometimes not." I need a program that will tell me that "A2-B7" (or "A2 - B7") means there are 18 wells occupied.
I've tried a few things, but a lot of problems arise when I try to do anything with names like "A1" because excel already defines "A1" as cell A1. Do you guys have any ideas? Am I being clear?

Sep 5, 2012I'm trying to count the number of numbers within a given range.
Example Row Y has cells that contain a series of numbers 1,5,9,12,23. No cell in the range should have the same individual number more than once. At the end of row Y I want to know how many numbers, not the total of the numbers are within that range.

Dec 17, 2012I have understood we use row property or method to count number of rows in a range and when I write a code as below, I expected it would give output "4" because 4 rows are selected but instead it gives only "1" as output so I'm confused about the row property.

Then it should be:
=COUNTIF(A1:A10,">="&1/1/2006)-COUNTIF(A1:A10,">"&7/1/2006)
But this only counts the number of cells that has the date, but not based on the range, why it doesn't work?

Jul 23, 2013I have a function which copy pastes data into a sheet based on a filter criteria. It is also pasted in a specific layout(shown below) starting from Cell A1 in the top left corner. Therefore the destination sheet could have a different number of rows with values each time.
What I would like to do is count the sum of 'Values' in the destination sheet, and add a total below it.
For example, the [=TOTAL] cell is where I want the total to appear. Below the answer would be 26. But say if Peter wasnt in the record, the formula should still work in identifying the Total as 20.

Aug 23, 2013I am trying to count the number of specific words contained in a specific cell. If my data were static, and the list of keywords was short, there are many solutions such as using multiple instances of the length function as proposed by @shg here.

Formula To Count Highest Number Of Continuous Cells With Data In A Range And Their Sum
Apr 1, 2009I have a range of 30 cells in a row. From that row there are groups of cells that have data that might be 1-7 cells populated in a row and in between these groups are blank cells in the row. I need to see what is the highest number of cells in a continuous row that contain data, what the mode is for continuous cell counts, and what is the average value for the data from the continuous cells. The average is a nice to have but not entirely necessary as most cell data will be fairly similar and I can get a close enough average just by knowing the average number of cells that contain data in a row. I have to do this calculation for about 1000 rows of individual data so its important a formula fit in one row.
Almost need a count function to count starting with each cell and then stopping at the first no no value it finds. Then it would show those counts and I could run a formula to pick the highest count and also show the mode of counts.
I will let the experts at it!, my weak mind could not think this one through. I thought something to do with MATCH for a while but no go from what I could do.

As you can see this also laps into a new year, which poses my next problem, ill probably just add more columns on to the end of the table for that though...
I will later apply different calculations to these cells but in short need to get a calculation for the number of days per month first.
(in short spreading the new value out accross the year then multiplying it by the days... i also need to apply a further daily volume cal to it).

I have a table that shows the days of the week for every date from now to 2020. I want to ask a user to enter a month and year (either all in one cell or two) and another cell will show the result of how many Sundays are in that month and year.

Sep 27, 2007I have a worksheet which calculates dates a product will be manufactured based on how many hours the job will run.
The first column has the starting date of the job which I input. The second column contains the date the job will finish based on a third column which contains the hours the job will run. The calculated ending date is then put into the starting date of the 2nd job. It continues to calculate down to the last job.
This calculation is based on a 24 hour day, 7 days a week. I would like to take out Sunday's in the calculation.
Include Saturdays And Maybe Sundays
May 20, 2008currently I'm working as project manage for a software development studio and I am using MS project for all my work. Since the development team aren't aloud to have a MS project license on their PC I have to copy their tasks from MS project and put them into Excel.
I would say that I am okay using Excel but not an expert. I want to create a formula that uses NETWORKDAYS to determines a finish date from a duration and start date.
The headers I would use for each column are Duration, Start and Finish. So I would like to be able to get a team member to put a duration down i.e 1 day and give me the start day and in the finish date it produces a finish date automatically without including Bank Holidays and Weekends. What would the formula be for that?
I have the same question as Madball and was able to work out the Worday function, however for my company, we work on Saturdays and or Sundays sometimes.
I would like to be able to specify from line to line if Saturday or Sunday needs to be included in the duration calculation resulting in a finish date, however if I can simply get one formula to work that includes Saturdays alone (most common working day of the weekend, and do work more than don't) it would be the most helpful, I think I can get it adjusted from there.
