Countif Function With An Inequality Reference To A Cell
Apr 24, 2007
I have a problem using COUNTIF function. I want to count cells say in range A1:A10 that are smaller that a value in a cell let's say B1. Neither of these works:
=COUNTIF(A1:A10; "<B1")
=COUNTIF(A1:A10; <B1)
How to do it? I saw your answer of Dave to a similar problem, but I still do not understand it.......

I have the following formula in my workbook:
=COUNTIF('\caltulfs1DATAProjectsF2014FB-979916 - EQUATE7.0 DOCUMENTATION7.01 DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS & RECORDS[FB-979916 DSI FORM.xlsm]Customer Tracking'!A12:A86,"past due")
When I open the master file I want my links to automatically update and open the referenced files without having to open the source document for each value. Can this be done

I have a sheet that calculates what items are on any given transaction - this works well. I now want another table that counts how many times a certain brand comes up.
For example one item on a transaction might be "TENSOR REG TRUCK BLK 5.0 x2"
I need the table to look at this and count if tensor is in it (sheet name: 'Sheet 1') but I want it to look at the list of brands and and reference that brand rather than type it out individually.

i'm trying to do a COUNTIF from an open workbook. The range I want for it is in another workbook, which I do not want to have open every time I run the macro.
This is my current
Sub cellLink()
Sheets("Calls In-Out Trend").Range("ag18").Formula = _
"=COUNTIF('C:***[*.xls]sheet name'I:I, QXO)"
End Sub
editthe range is just so I can see if it's giving the right values, the range won't be like that once I get it working. I'll probably be using logic statements to place them in the appropriate cells. The * is just me taking out the directory names, its on the desktop)
It can copy cell values from another unopened workbook, but when I try to put in COUNTIF it doesn't want to compile/run the script.
That's basically the question. Here's some background and my aim:
I'm scanning row I:I for certain keywords which I then count up and put into corresponding columns of a chart.

I am currently using a color count function to both count by color and count by color and cells containing certain characters, such as # or %. This works great.
However, I need to modify the UDF to count all the cells in a range in columns C:Z that contain alpha, AND IF the Interior.ColorIndex of a cell in column B within the same row of the counting formula equals the Interior.ColorIndex of a cell in column B within the same row of the selected cell in the range.
Basically, Column B is a header row, and I want to count the cells in a range in each column C:Z if they contain a name AND their corresponding header cell's color in column B matches the color of the header cell in the row containing the formula.

I'm wondering if anyone else has run into problems with an inequality in a criteria range. Specifically, I have several criteria columns in a named range, and one of them specifically needs to exclude the text string "4" (the column in the database range contains nothing but single character text strings whose values are either "1", "2", "3", "4", or "S"). So I used the following in the criteria range for that column:
<>"4"
and my DCOUNT database function failed to exclude such a row from the count. I also tried the following, separately:
<>'4'
<>'4
="<>'4'"
and various other permutations, none of which achieved the proper result. I've been forced to add multiple rows to the criteria range instead, to specify the values I can accept. Does anyone know if there's a problem with using inequalities in criteria ranges? Does anyone know how to get this to work? FYI, I have Excel 2002 (10.4109.6626) SP3, and this is a corporate situation where I cannot apply any fixes.

I'm trying to write a macro to test whether a cell has any neighbouring cells that match it's value.
I'd like this to be cumulative so that the more matches, the higher the value.
I'd then like the result to be written in another cell to set up a separate grid.
So far I'm getting error messages and I don't know why:

I'm trying to create a dynamic COUNTIF function that references a previous cell.
For example, if I have 10 columns:
A B C D E F G H I J
a 1 b 2 c 3 a 1 b 3
I am trying to write a function that will let me reference A1:J1 and then if the cell contains an A, do a countif among the cell+1 for cells that have a value of "1". In this example, that function would return a count of 2. I think that I need some kind of combination of IF, INDIRECT, and COUNTIF, but I'm not sure how to string them all together--or maybe there's another way altogether.

I tried to answer a problem on here by giving this formula: = COUNTIF(A1:B6,"=""")
but it doesn't work on my machine. Nor does =COUNTIF(A1:B6,"<>"""). In either case, the effect is as if all cells in the range are non-blank. But the result of =A1="" is "TRUE". Neither syntax is rejected by Excel; in fact, if you omit one of the quotes, the syntax is corrected to the form shown. So I am curious. Does this work normally, but some setting in my machine is stopping it? Or, if it never works, why is it not giving a syntax error? I am using Excel 2000.

=IF((a2=C$3);a2;"") copied down the column
but if I try to filter all numbers greater than 2 (I eneter ">"&2 in cell c3) it doesnt work. Is it possible with if formula or should I use something else?

I have a workbook with a Summary sheet and then a series of sheets for each month/year. Onthe summary sheet I use column A for the month/year as a date formatted "mmm yy" ie the same as the sheet names.
in columns B,C,D I want formulae that sums or averages a fixed range on each sheet but I would like the formula to take the sheet name from Columa A rather than hard coding it.
So that in the example =SUM('Dec 04'!$C$6:$C$47) I want to take the "Dec 04" from the text in cell A3

I have a column of numbers, on which i would like to perform subtraction, in a way that the cell in the (i)th row will be subtracted from the one in the (i+x)th row, while x is a parameter that the user can change as he wishes.
My problem is how to refer to the cell address and still use this conditional reference...
If anyone has an idea how to realize this calculation (which should be peanuts in Matlab, but apparently more problematic in Excel),

i need a function that do this:
in the cell A1 i want to visualize the cell A1 of second file
in the cell A2 i want to visualize the cell A13 of second file
in the cell A3 i want to visualize the cell A25 of second file
i explain: in the first file i need a column that in each line show the first cell + 12, then +24, then +36.
file 1 is 1.xls
file 2 is 2.xls
for example A1 have the value 1
if in 1.xls cell A1 I insert =[2.xls]worksheet1!A1 and in A2 =[2.xls]worksheet1!A1+12 in A2 i obtain the value of A1+12=13, but i need to obtain the valour of A1+12=value of A13.thanks

I am trying to acccess a cell value from a seperate worksheet. The cell reference needs to be generated by a seperate formula. In this example
=DSInfo!C28 // provides the correct result i.e the contents of cell C28 on worsheet DSInfo =MATCH(A4,DSInfo!C1:C35,0) //provides the correct row number - in this case 28
However on trying to combine the two =DSInfo!C&MATCH(A4,DSInfo!C1:C35,0) // provides only a formula error. I'm guessing this is a simple syntax error on my part but after hours of trying various ways I'm still having no luck.

Is there a way to start match from a relative position?
Say a match I have in column "A" returns 344. Is it possible to start a new match for column "B" from that spot, instead of having it return a match starting at the top?

I have problem with a spreadsheet that I am trying to create.
I have a large sheet of data which is dumped in from another program. This contains our deliveries and orders etc.
Now for planning purposes, I would like to see how much of each item I have on order.
I can use VLOOKUP, but that will only give me the amount for the first order it encounters. But not the 3rd, 4th etc. I could use SUMIF but I need the dates as well. After doing some searching I think I have found a way of doing this: I can get the first easier enough:
=VLOOKUP(D$11,'purchase order'!$A$1:$K$6000,5,FALSE), this gives the first order than the another =VLOOKUP(D11,'purchase order'!$A$1:$K$6000,11,FALSE) for its date.
For the second column to check any other orders I thought I could find the cell referance for the first SEARCH: which is
A108: ="A"&MATCH(D11,'purchase order'!A:A,0).
Is there any way of using this Reference to start a new VLOOKUP. So the Lookup Range starts at this reference?? To make things harder it is on another sheet.

i have this formula:
=COUNTIF(INDIRECT(A2&"_RES"),"Yes")
A2 refers to a cell to complete the indirect query (DCA_RES) which refers to another range in the workbook.
Now I want to have count if A2&"_INIT" is "BB" AND if A2&"RES" is "YES"
So that I get the amount of records of resolved queries (Yes) that match my Initials (BB).
I cant think of a different formula that might work?

I've been testing the countif function and for some reason it isn't working for me.
I have the following text in cells A1:A3
"apple"
"banana"
"peach"
I have the following text in cells C1:C3
"apricot"
"banana"
"grape"
I put the following formula in B1 and copied down into B2 and B3.
=COUNTIF($C$1:$C$3,A1)
It is meant to count how many of each fruit in A1:A3 is also in C1:C3.
The banana is the only one that is in both lists so the formula in B2 should return 1.
But all three formula's return zero.
If I change the range in the countif formula to relative it works. eg., =COUNTIF(C1:C3,A1)

I am using COUNTIF functions with Defined Name lists to quickly determine if a certain number is on a list. As a backdrop, I am using Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) numbers and attempting to somewhat streamline chemical approval for a small company. CAS numbers are often in the format of XX-XX-X with varied amounts of numbers. One of the defined lists however does not have dashes.
Thus, I am using cell B1 to enter the CAS# once and then for each list having a column to itself with an associated worksheet with a defined name list. Most of the columns have the function =B1 with the conditional formatting of =COUNTIF(definedname,BX) and formatted to turn red if the chemical is on the list. This is working for all of the columns except for the list that needs the dashes removed. For instance, CAS 64-67-1 is put in B1 and cell B5 has the formula =SUBSTITUTE(B1,"-","") which brings the number to 64671 which matches the number in my defined name list. However, the cell will not turn red. What am I missing?

important columns are: "D", "G", "L".
this is about a project is a granite to be installed in 104 units, these units are divided in 4 types (column "L") K1, K2, K3, K4
I tried IF, SUMIF, COUNTIF, ETC but I think that I need is some combined function that I'm not able to figure out.
as you can see in the attached file, my units 101, 102, etc is not been installed yet (column H is empty), but the units 209, 210, 211, 214 yes was installed on 5/6 for example.
for example, if i use =COUNTIF(H4:H20,">0"), will return me all the H that is not empty (=3), how many kitchen was installed so far, but, I would like to know how many of these returned units (3), is my different types: K1, K2, K3 and K4....
