Dynamic COUNTIF Function That References Previous Cell
Dec 11, 2012
I'm trying to create a dynamic COUNTIF function that references a previous cell.
For example, if I have 10 columns:
A B C D E F G H I J
a 1 b 2 c 3 a 1 b 3
I am trying to write a function that will let me reference A1:J1 and then if the cell contains an A, do a countif among the cell+1 for cells that have a value of "1". In this example, that function would return a count of 2. I think that I need some kind of combination of IF, INDIRECT, and COUNTIF, but I'm not sure how to string them all together--or maybe there's another way altogether.

I'm working in Excel 2010. I'm trying to create a dynamic range, using the OFFSET function. I've got it working beautifully but as soon as I save it and close the Name Manager the range stops working. When I go back into Name Manager I find all the cell references have changed (from C1:C600 to C1048572:C595 - or some other strange range).
P.S. What it's doing isn't so important as when the cell references are right it works. But just for full info: It's an OFFSET function, starting at A1. It will look at a list of companies and use a Match function to find out how many rows to offset (based on where the first instance of a particular company. And it uses the COUNTIF to make the range the same number of rows as there are entries for that company.
Here is my broken function:
=OFFSET('Map Point'!A1048572,MATCH("Company Name",'Sheet Name'!C1048572:C595)-COUNTIF('Sheet Name'!C1048572:C595,"Company Name"),0,COUNTIF('Sheet Name'!C1048572:C595,"Company Name"))

I have a simple range, say, A1:G1. I want to have another cell, H1, reference whatever rightmost cell in the range contains any data. All the cells in the range will be using text.
So if B1 contains data, I want H1 to show what's in B1, but if data is inputted into F1, I now want H1 to show what's in F1.

I am having a few problems with dynamic named range in excel 2000.
When adding new data to the range, excel extends the range correctly, but only copies some of the formula correctly. It does not copy the formula that references a cell from another line.
I am trying to create a excel spreadsheet and have a formula =e10-e9, which does not copy down.

Is it possible to replace the Pivit table name/reference in a GETPIVOT function with a cell/range reference? I can on other components of the function call, but not that. For example ... the "hardwired" function call might be:
=GETPIVOTDATA(" Sum of 1991",'[EE_financial data.xls]Sheet1'!$A$3,"Company","ERG","Item"," Depreciation & Amortisation")
I can achieve the same result by externalising the 1991 and ERG, so i replace this with other dates or names, thus:
ERG
1991=GETPIVOTDATA("Sum of "&C13,'[EE_financial data.xls]Sheet1'!$A$3,"Company",D12,"Item"," Depreciation & Amortisation")
.. and this works fine.
However, if I try and replace the '[EE_financial data.xls]Sheet1'!$A$3 with a reference to a cell containing that string, it returns #REF!

I have a spreadsheet which shows a matrix in pounds. But I would like to have a reference cell somewhere near the top which will automatically show the conversion to kilos of any selected cell. Is anyone aware of a function which will do this?
For example, one pound equals 0.45359237 kilos.
Cell A1 contains the reference function to the active of selected cell. If I click on B1 which contains 12, cell A1 would automatically show 5.45. If I click on cell C1 which contains 20, cell A1 would automatically show 9.09.
So I’m thinking it would be something like
=SelectedCell/0.45359237 or maybe =ActiveCell/0.45359237

I'm using Excel 2003 and I'm trying to make my LINEST function and the source cells for a scatter graph use the cell range specified in another cell in the document. I figured out that it was simple to do the following:
I250 contains: 10, shows: 10
I251 contains: ="I"&I250, shows I10
But I can't figure out how to do this in a larger function. I've tried a few things but none of them work. Here is an example where I want it to do a LINEST with y values in cells Ja - Jb and x values in cells Ia - Ib (where a and b are integers specified in cells I250 and J250 respectively):

Any way to use a find and replace function involving a cell reference. I have a spreadsheet with ton of junky text burying information that I want. Here is a simplified example
A B
Book 345353hg dgdgsdgfd fff Book belongs to Jim
Sneaker fdg4 Sneaker is worn by Jan
Gum dfg s d e te4345Gum tastes great
Cake jklsjflsjfjikCake smells delicious
The pattern is that the A1 text appears in the B2 text. What I want is
Find *A1
Replace with blank
Find *A2
Replace with blank
and etc.
So that in the end, I get this:
B2
belongs to Jim
is worn by Jan
tastes great
smells delicious
I've looked at the functions of find, replace, substitute, left, and right and I can't seem to find the right one to do what I need.

I am using a lot of linked reports that have to be rewritten each month. For example smaller formulas look like this:
=('S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING201311 November[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]Production Parts'!B$228*2)+'S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING201311 November[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]Production Parts'!B$262+'S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING201311 November[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]Production Parts'!B$292
What I want to do is extract the file path from the above formula and make it a composite of several cell references.
So what I need is to have a cell where they can change the month and another where we can change the year. So I set up several named cells that look like this:
_MONTH =11 November
_YEAR =2013
_JOBCARD ='S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING
_PATH =_JOBCARD & _YEAR &"" &_MONTH
I tried several versions, I am hoping for something like this:
=('_PATH &"[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]"Production Parts'!B$228*2)+'_PATH &"[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]"Production Parts'!B$262+'_PATH &"[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]"Production Parts'!B$292

I'm trying to write a macro to test whether a cell has any neighbouring cells that match it's value.
I'd like this to be cumulative so that the more matches, the higher the value.
I'd then like the result to be written in another cell to set up a separate grid.
So far I'm getting error messages and I don't know why:

I have a problem using COUNTIF function. I want to count cells say in range A1:A10 that are smaller that a value in a cell let's say B1. Neither of these works:
=COUNTIF(A1:A10; "<B1")
=COUNTIF(A1:A10; <B1)
How to do it? I saw your answer of Dave to a similar problem, but I still do not understand it.......

Im creating a template for a number of sheets and I want the hyperlink for my previous/next buttons (to move forward and back through sheets) to change based on cell values.
All my sheets are named as numbers ie '1','2','3' and so on
The name (and therefore number) of the sheet is held in cell E22 on each sheet.
The 'previous' button needs to therefore hyperlink to cell A1 on sheet (E22-1) and the 'Next' button to cell A1 on sheet (E22+1)
The 'buttons' I have though are arrows from Excels shapes and I dont know how to add code to them though to start the hyperlink.
Also if i wanted to reference sheet E22-1 etc in a HYPERLINK() function what is the syntax?

I have a spreadsheet that imports data from a database and into pivot. Several departments use that spreadsheet, but depending on the department, they may want to see e.g. 3, 4 or 5 different fields than other departments.
My spreadsheet also includes a great number of formulas included in a macro, so whenever I get a request to include field X, Y and Z, I end up spending a lot of time adjustning all my formulas to reference the new fields.

I tried to answer a problem on here by giving this formula: = COUNTIF(A1:B6,"=""")
but it doesn't work on my machine. Nor does =COUNTIF(A1:B6,"<>"""). In either case, the effect is as if all cells in the range are non-blank. But the result of =A1="" is "TRUE". Neither syntax is rejected by Excel; in fact, if you omit one of the quotes, the syntax is corrected to the form shown. So I am curious. Does this work normally, but some setting in my machine is stopping it? Or, if it never works, why is it not giving a syntax error? I am using Excel 2000.

Now I wish to have Sheet2 which should contain a cell named "Limits" which should refer to =Sheet2!$B$12.
How do I get the reference Limits:=Sheet1!$B$12 (highlighted in red part) to change dynamically according to the sheet I chose?

It is suppose to be that if the employee is "FT" and has worked >=4 years the return is 15. But if the employee is FT and has worked 2 years but less than 4 years then it is suppose to return 10 (these are days off) Or if the employee is FT and has worked 1 year, but less than 2 then it should return 5 days off. And all the others in the column get no days off.
I have tried to do it with structured references and with cell references I get a column of zeros!

Let's say I have three cells; A1, B1, C1. A1 = a random number (RandBetween 0 and 100) B1 = If(A1>99,1,0). I want to increment C1 everytime I refresh the randbetween via f9 so that the first time A1 returns a value of over 99, C1 picks up a value of 1 from B1 and then the next time I get a value of A1 over 99, C1 adds the value of 1 from B1 to its existing total, giving a total of 2 etc etc etc.
Essentially, what I want is: If A1>99,C1=C1+1. I can't work out how to get C1 to hold its value when I refresh the sheet. I realise it's probably pretty simple, but it would appear that so am I.

Is it possible to loop through a list of sheets and execute some calculations that have sheet references from a different list of worksheets? For example, you have a list (list 1) of your worksheets, which will be the destinations of the calculations, and you have a second list (list 2) of worksheets that the calculations are based on. So, lets say there are sheet1 and sheet2 in list 1, and sheetA and sheetB in list 2. The calculations based on sheetA would appear in sheet1, and calculations based on sheetB would appear in sheet2. I thought the code would look something like this:
Code:
Sub LoopthroughWorksheets()
Dim sheet_name As Range
Dim sheet_name2 As Range
Set sheet_name2 = Sheets("WS").Range("F:F")
[Code] ......
I'm getting a "Run-time error '1004: Application-defined or object defined error" at this line:
Code:
.Range("K1") = .Range("sheet_name2.Value!A14").Value

Does COUNTIFS not work with named ranges/dynamic ranges? Everytime I try, I get a #VALUE! error. These are my 2 dynamic ranges:
ResultsM=OFFSET([results_list.xls]Results!$M$4,0,0,COUNTA([results_list.xls]Results!$M:$M),1)
ResultsQ=OFFSET([results_list.xls]Results!$Q$4,0,0,COUNTA([results_list.xls]Results!$Q:$Q),1)
The formula is simply:
=COUNTIFS(ResultsQ,"GENDER",ResultsM,"MALE"
However, this does NOT work. it returns the #VALUE! error. However, odly enough, when I use column references, it works:
=COUNTIFS([results_list.xls]Results!Q:Q, "GENDER", [results_list.xls]Results!M:M, "MALE")
This makes me think that COUNTIFS just don't work with named references..

I have a data set that alters each week which means at the moment I have to update the ranges manually each time. I would like to use a dynamic range and think I need to use the Offset and CountIf functions. Both the start and end of the ranges are dynamic. The range is based on grouping the numbers in Column E (LocNo)
What I would like to do or think the way to achieve this is by:
First looking at Column E
Count how many cells are equal to criteria. (CountIf)
offset 5 columns left from the first cell that meets the criteria (Offset -5)
offset X rows down based on how many cells meet the criteria (Offset X)
I've include a spreadsheet spread sheet which 'should' help illustrate the problem showing the ranges I would like and how the data changes each week.

The following formula produces the desired result:
=COUNTIF(INDIRECT(TEXT(A8,"mmm")&"!B2:Z100"),"SK")
but replacing the range of cells with a dynamic named range returns #REF!:
=COUNTIF(INDIRECT(TEXT(A8,"mmm")&"!Data"),"SK")
where A8 is the date 01/01/07. I'm trying to count items within the range Jan!Data.
I'm not sure if I'm trying to do the impossible, or if I'm missing something.

I am using COUNTIF functions with Defined Name lists to quickly determine if a certain number is on a list. As a backdrop, I am using Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) numbers and attempting to somewhat streamline chemical approval for a small company. CAS numbers are often in the format of XX-XX-X with varied amounts of numbers. One of the defined lists however does not have dashes.
Thus, I am using cell B1 to enter the CAS# once and then for each list having a column to itself with an associated worksheet with a defined name list. Most of the columns have the function =B1 with the conditional formatting of =COUNTIF(definedname,BX) and formatted to turn red if the chemical is on the list. This is working for all of the columns except for the list that needs the dashes removed. For instance, CAS 64-67-1 is put in B1 and cell B5 has the formula =SUBSTITUTE(B1,"-","") which brings the number to 64671 which matches the number in my defined name list. However, the cell will not turn red. What am I missing?

important columns are: "D", "G", "L".
this is about a project is a granite to be installed in 104 units, these units are divided in 4 types (column "L") K1, K2, K3, K4
I tried IF, SUMIF, COUNTIF, ETC but I think that I need is some combined function that I'm not able to figure out.
as you can see in the attached file, my units 101, 102, etc is not been installed yet (column H is empty), but the units 209, 210, 211, 214 yes was installed on 5/6 for example.
for example, if i use =COUNTIF(H4:H20,">0"), will return me all the H that is not empty (=3), how many kitchen was installed so far, but, I would like to know how many of these returned units (3), is my different types: K1, K2, K3 and K4....
