Counting Formula (compare Values In 2 Separate Columns To See How Many Times The Same Value Appears In Both Columns)
Oct 13, 2008
I'm trying to compare values in 2 separate columns to see how many times the same value appears in both columns. Ideally I would be able to insert a range function to compare the values in the column "ID 1" against the values in column "ID 2" and return the count of times that a value appears in both columns. For example 2122, 1112 and 1718 appear in both columns and I would like the formula to return a count of 3.
In my actual project I'm comparing 2 columns in the same worksheet. The column are column B with data in cells B2:B10266 against column C with data in cells C2:C18560.
I have number of items and many items appear more than once. I need a formula so that counts the number of item appearing maximum number of times and it displays the name of the text written NOT the number of times it is written. It should also calculate number of times it appears in a particular month.
For E.g.
Table 1-5-2012 Chair 1-5-2012 Fan 3-5-2012 Table 10-5-2012 Fan 1-6-2012 Window 1-6-2012 Glass 1-7-2012 Glass 9-7-2012
I have a spreadsheet of products that are listed in column A and another list of products in column B. I need to find the difference in price in a percentage for each product. My problem is the lists differ a little bit in that there are more products in column A so they are not lined up correctly. Is there a way to have excel look in column A and find the match in column B and then line them up so the matching products are in the same row? This will cut out a lot of time having to do the formula in each cell rather than autofilling the formula.
If I have two columns of data, and I want to count the numbers of times a certain letter appears in column A and another certain value appears in column B, I use the following formula:
=sumproduct((AA="yes")*(BB:="X"))
What formula would I use to count the number of times "yes" appears in column A, AND EITHER "X", "Y", or "Z" appear in column B?
Would this still be a SUMPRODUCT formula, or would a cOUNTIF formula be used?
How about counting the times certain letters appear in THREE columns?
I have a spreadsheet with over 15 columns showing drivers (names numbers etc) and their duties with more inf.
What I need is to be able to find when a certain type of driver in column A (drivers belong to different rutes) say from route A is at rest (this is shown as RD) which is shown in column B and then be able to count how many times those two exact events occur.
I need to take the data out of one column from sheet A and compare it to the data on another column sheet B.
Real life example:
I have a very large list of contacts with multiple columns of data. On a separate spreadsheet, I have a list email addresses that I need to remove from the larger list of contacts. How can I compare them against one another to detect any matched email addresses for deletion?
List of contacts is appx 130mb List of email addresses is appx 4mb
Right now, I'm trying to find a way to count the number of times a certain phrase appears in a column.
I'm currently using this formula for exact values: COUNTIF(A1:A5,"Hello"), but this only works if an entry in a column is exactly: "Hello"
I want to be able to count a column even if it has more words, such as "Hello how are you" etc., and this column would be counted because it has the word "hello" in it.
the number of days when there were 0 cases the number of days there was 1 case the number of days when there were 2 cases. As yet there are no days in which there were more than 2 cases but there might be in the future.
I have a list of dates when operations took place in that room. On some days the it was not in use, so those dates don't appear in the list. Some days there was 1 case, so that date appears once in the list. On some days there were two cases, so that date appears twice in the list.
What I've done so far is create a pivot table that contains all the dates, then grouped it by day and counted the number of times there was 1 or 2 cases in a day by hand, then subtracted the total to get the days when there weren't any cases.
If I have 1,000 entries in a column is there an easy way to determine the number of times a certain item is in the columns. For example if field A1 is "qwerty" I wan to see how many times "qwerty" or field A1 appears in the entire column?
I have a 2007 Excel spreadsheet (saved as .XLS) with worker names in column A and error types in column B. Column B can have multiple entries (which are sometimes duplicative of each other) separated by a hard return.
What I need to do is run tallies to determine the number of errors by type for each person, counting the value every time it appears, even if it is more than once in a particular cell. The ultimate goal is to generate a formula to track the number of occurrences for all error types types for the person in Column A (i.e. one formula each to track ABC's Procedural errors, ABC's Technical errors, ABC's Admin errors, DEF's Procedural, etc) though ideally I just need a formula to calculate any one of those and I can edit it to get the rest. Here's a sample screenshot:
The COUNTIFS formula is where I started but that only seems to count cells with the value as opposed to occurrences of the value. I did find this formula in my searches but it doesn't seem to work:
I'm using Excel 2003 and I need to calculate the number of occurrences on according to different criteria in two separate colums.
I am on Sheet 3 and the data I am analyzing is on Sheet 1, titled "RATES". I wish to know how many occurrences are when the word "GB" appears on column B (cells B2 to B100) along with a value greater than zero on column M (cells M2 to M100). The word "GB" does not appear alone but is part of a string of text with different words, I think this is relevant.
I am trying to create a graph that is conditional on two different columns. The first column is a date column, the second column has various categories. I want to show how many times each category appears per month. This database is continually added to so I wanted the formula to reflect the entire column range.
For example, let say I have 5 categories (Grapes, Apples, Peach, Pear, Banana). Column A would show a date (in a M/D/Y format) and Column B would list the fruit type. I want to show how many Grapes were input in January, February, March, etc. and then move on to show how many apples in each month, and so on.
I am trying to count how many times a certain value appears in a column. For example how mnay times A81001 appears in column A and compare with column B. I suppose it's Count function?
column A column B A81001A81001 A81001A81001 A81002A81002 A81002A81002 A81002A81002 A81002A81002 A81002A81002 A81003A81003 A81003A81003 A81003A81004 A81004A81004 A81004A81004 A81004A81004 A81004A81005
1. In my first column(Let's call it "input"), there will be a variety of values from 1-10 which will appear in cells as 1,7,10 or 4,5,6,7 or any other similar variation. The quantity of numbers can vary and will always be comma delimited.
2. Following the first column are 10 additional columns. For simplicity, let's say they're labelled 1-10.
3. If 2,5,6,9 is present in the first cell, I want the number 1 in the columns labelled 2,5,6 and 9. If 1,4 is present in the first cell, I want the number 1 in the columns labelled 1 and 4.
The input will only be in the first cell so I am hoping to find a way to automate the placement of 1's in the appropriate column depending on the input in the first column("input").
As a bonus, I'd like all cells not present in the first column to appear as a "0".
If our work for the intersection of two columns A, B supposed to be output 1, 2 and 3 Required to find the remainder of the A and show it automatically in column C The remainder of the B reveled in column D
Note: columns A,B repeat accepting of figures
To explain the result of the remaining column A is 1, 1, 5
I have a worksheet where I want to compare values in two of the columns. In column B there are EAN codes consisting of 13 digits. In column E there are 5-digit numbers.
What I want to do is to compare the 5 digit number with the EAN code where these digits should be in position 7-12 in the EAN code. Those numbers in column E that doesn't have a match in column B should be marked (for example that the background color of that cell is set to "red").
Example: B E XXXXXX12345X 12345 (match - do nothing) XXXXXX12346X 12346 (match - do nothing) XXXXXX12348X 12347 (no match - set background color to red) XXXXXX12349X 12348 (match - do nothing) XXXXXX12350X 12349 (match - do nothing) XXXXXX12351X 12352 (no match - set background color to red)
There are more values in column E than B.
In all there are close to 4500 rows so I really could use a nifty macro to do this job.
I have two columns with numbers. For every row I want to find out if either of the numbers in the two columns is in a third column that I have with numbers. Does anyone know hoe to write a formula for this?
I've tried everything I know (which isnt that much to be honest. lol). Ive tried the frequency formula but that doesn't work the way I want it - I think its probably the wrong formula to use. I've also tried a pivot table but they always vex me. If a pivot table IS the way to go, could someone talk me through it step by step? (*the wizard is just as confusing as doing it yourself I find) ....
I have gone through various posts but am unable to get the answer. What I'm trying to do is find if a value (text or number) in Col. A exists anywhere in Col C. and if it does, find the corresponding entry in Col. D and paste it back against the value of Col. A in Col. B. To explain better I have attached a sample excel file Ex1. In the file, the entry "sun" in Col A is present in Col C and the corresponding value in Col D is 24 which should be pasted back against "sun" in Col B.
I cannot get various formulas (Countif, Match, Frequency, Etc) to work properly.
I am trying to arrive at a total number of matches of numbers in cell range B1:G1 with any numbers entered into the cell range of K1:P11 and have the total of matches display in cell H1. However I do not want to count duplicate numbers from the K1:P11 cells. (if the number 5 in posted in K1:P11 multiple times I only need it reported once in H1)
B1:G1 is the constant and the numbers will not change - K1:P11 cells will be populated by adding numbers until the all the numbers in B1:G1 is completed and match.
The attached spreadsheet is a sample of a master sheet I need to maintain. Keep in mind that the spreadsheet has hundreds of names on it and 10 sheets in the workbook. What name appears most in the "person who called" column, then I need to know out of all the people who called, what percentage of calls he made....
I have to do this on each sheet, so if it is possible to have it work for all the sheets.
I have two columns of data: 1 column can be possibly anything, either numeric, alphanumeric, or alpha only (VINS or vehicle numbers). The adjacent column are four different types of vehicles. I've tried concatentating the two to try and count the unique combinations (a truck maybe used more than once during the day), which I can get unique values, but not unique values for each type. Also, the range sizes are variable, but no more that 65 rows.
An example:
5CZ975 Van 25RW04 Straight 5CZ975 Van ZJ6026 Van
So, the result I am after is 2 vans, 1 straight truck
I found an array in a another post, but it is not working properly (see cell F7 in the attached):
Im trying to come up with an automated way of splitting concatenated information but putting each concatenated value in a seperate row.( i have columns of data that need to stay with each concatenated value) Eg
Concatenated comma delimited data

i need to to get a result that looks like the below example im currently just doing text to column filterting and copying all the columns over and stacking them on top of each other. i need to find a way to automate this process but i cant seem to think of one

I need to compare Column A from Sheet2 with Sheet1 and where the values match, only replace THOSE values in Column B of Sheet1 with those in Column B of Sheet2. Hence, after the replacement, Sheet1 should look like (value for apple remains unchanged).
I have two list of names, mostly duplicates. List in column B has about 30 more names than the list in Column A and I need to identify which names are in column B that are not in column A. Names are in exact same format since they were pulled from the same data base.
