Customize And Lock A Range For Each User Who Downloads File
Feb 15, 2010
I've got an Excel file that I'll be offering for download. I'd like to customize each copy for each user as they download it from the server and am trying to figure out if this is possible & what technology I'd need to use to do so. Simply, I'd like to edit a range in a document, lock it with the built in Excel password protection, and then resave it for the user. Is it possible to write a script to do this w/o opening the file? Any ideas on what technology I'd need to use to do so (.NET framework? OWC?)?
I have a series of consecutive cells that I have a number entered in it. AP50 through AP 74 are numbered 1 through 25. I don't want the user to be able to change the number but I do want them to be able to click in the cell as this makes other functions happen.
Have a worksheet that will be used multiple times. User will enter name and employee number only on the first instance that the worksheet is opened. Would like to protect that info automatically for further usage. Most of the worksheet is protected but some cells need to remain unlocked so the "whole" sheet protection will not work.
How do I protect only specified cells, say F3, G3, H3, I3, after the user enters data thru an input box without changing any other protected cells on the sheet?
Is there a way to freeze the user input when it first comes up for a given amount of time. In essence, I am trying to force the user to read before clicking.
how to lock a cell date automatically after the user saves changes, it's current format it is a tick box with a reference cell Today() but it need to be locked once completed,
I have an excel file with multiple sheets. I want my HR team to update that file, but one user shouldnt see the entries of other users. I want to make a consolidated file out of three files. This excel template is for salary input.
An Excel file named CLEARING is availble in thr central server system. it will be accessed by 5 or 6 staffs from some other systems what i need is when one person accesses/edits this file the others should not even able to open in the read only file ,when the file is saved and closed ,then only the next person should access it
I have the following sumif formula in a spreadsheet. Unfortunately, the columns where I search the data and the columns needing to be summed will vary depending on how the user downloads the data.
Using VBA I've designed a sub-routine that dynamically identifies and returns to the spreadsheet in cell AC57 the letter of the column that contains the criteria I need to search on (in this case, 'S') and the letter of the column to add up (in this case, 'H') which is contained in cell AD57. How do I get the sumif formula to accept these columns as string arguments?
The cell that contains column 'S' (the search criteria column) is cell AC57. The cell that contains column 'H' (the sum column) is cell AD57.
I've created some code to automate file downloads from a server using WinSCP. The code creates a .bat file and a .dat file containing a script to transfer files using WinSCP.
When the VBA code runs the script using Shell, the terminal window opens and closes in a flash and the download does not execute. However, if I execute the .bat file outside of VBA the whole download process works great!

How to loop a macro which downloads historical stock information into Excel. I had the macro working for a single sheet, but I want it to update all of the sheets in the work book except a few. Now I keep getting a Error # 1004 unable to open error on line .Refresh BackgroundQuery:=False
Code:
Sub GetData() Dim ws As Worksheet For Each ws In ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets ' Exclude certain sheets If ws.Name "Porfolio" Or ws.Name "Benchmark" Then
[Code]....
QueryQuote:
With ActiveSheet.QueryTables.Add(Connection:="URL;" & qurl, Destination:=DataSheet.Range("A5")) .BackgroundQuery = True .TablesOnlyFromHTML = False .Refresh BackgroundQuery:=False .SaveData = True End With
Below is the current code I have for File Copy before the workbook closes. This file will be distributed all over and obviously will not have the same old path and new path locations as I have in my code also will not have the same file name. Is there anyway to still perform the file copy without knowing the old path and file name and possibly have message box pop up to ask the copy to location and use that in the new path string?
Sub Macro1() Dim fs As Object Dim oldPath As String, newPath As String oldPath = "I:EXLDATAMC Daily" '<---Where the file is currently located newPath = "H:South RegionOrlando Mail Services2008DI" 'Since the super shared drive is super slow we will just copy and replace this file each time before we close and of course after we save Set fs = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") fs.CopyFile oldPath & "" & "OrlandoMail.xls", newPath & "" & "OrlandoMail.xls" Set fs = Nothing End Sub
I have a workbook were a user will write down some info. Then I need to copy that data to a second workbook located anywere in the Hard drive. i used the function "GetOpenFilename" or the "Application.dialogs(xlopenfile) to ask the user where is the file (and open it). Now I need to get the name of that file. How can I get it?(the name of the file the user selected to open). P.S. I saw there is somewhere a "Print" function to copy data from a workbook to another closed workbook. I was planning to have both workbooks open and then just use several lines like:
got a problem with a little piece of code witch need to check something and if its true then its has to do 1 and they i need another if... just look at the code :P

how to get informazion with VBA code about the name of the user who opened already a workbook on the network.
Usually if somebody wants to open a file that is opened by another user, office applications give informations that the file is open and about the name who opened that file.
Is it possible to get this information with VBA code, too?
I have a spreadsheet that allows users to paste set data from a PDF Image (using OCR) straight into Excel and then use the MID function to split the data accordingly.
Unfortunately, the OCR isn’t too intuitive and gets it wrong sometimes.
So to counter this, in another sheet (in the same workbook) I have a manual input section, and a simple macro button that pastes this data into the same fields where the OCR text would be, so that the main sheet works exactly the same way as before.
The problem is, and most likely due to the simplicity of the sheet, if a combination of OCR pasting and manual inputting is used, when I hit the paste button, it over rides the OCR data with blank cells
In the link below I have shown what is currently happening (1, 2, 3), and an example of what I would actually like it to do (4, 5, 6).
Example - Online Spreadsheets - EditGrid
So, in the 2nd scenario, I would like “5” to recognise that the respective cells in “4” already contain data and fill them ‘Grey’. This I have already achieved with basic conditional formatting.
However, I need to take it 1 step further and say that if the parent sheets cell (Auto OCR) contains data, as well as filling cells (in sheet Manual) lock these cells off and prevent the end user from adding data and/ or being copied over to the parent sheet.
Is this possible?
The result then being the parent sheet with both OCR text and copied text from the manual input sheet.
Both sheets are protected anyway and only allow for user input in certain areas, so is it even possible to apply further protection once the sheet is locked already?
I am trying to prompt the user for the directory to be saved in and file name to be saved as; then save the workbook in the input directory with the inputted file name.
I have a log that is used to keep when items are due. I do not want my coworkers to delete items once they have been entered and saved. So the excel sheet I am trying to make has certain cells in a range that I want to autolock after saving. For example: the cell range is G3:J402. I enter Customer Name in Cell G3 and the Date the job was received in H3. Once i enter that information I want it locked once i save it. Then later on, my coworker completes the job and enters the date in I2. And again once she saves this she shouldn't be able to edit this information. Then again another day she comes and enters the date on I3 when the product has been shipped out.
While all of the above activity is going on, new customers are continuously being in added in G4, G5....
Also, if possible the date in the H range should be the date items are entered in G (this would be a nice added feature). I've included the file for review. I'm running Microsoft Excel 2010

I have tried hard to find other solutions with links at the following places but not exactly what I'm desiring:Auto lock cells after data entry when file saved...
Auto lock cells after data entered and SAVED.
Auto Lock Selected Range of Cells After Saving
I should also mention that most solutions either provide for locking/unlocking of all cells but not a selected range. Or they provide for locking/unlocking of a selected range but not for a specific sheet or not after you have saved the workbook.
This is unique in that I'd like it to autolock after i press the save button for a SPECIFIC number of cells. I just wanted to clarify as to not make others think that I haven't used the search function.
There is something that is bothering me in excel. Every time I open a workbook, on my toolbar appears the "Reviewing" one. I tried to unchecked it from the customize toolbar option but still appears on opening a new workbook ((.
VBA code Identify which user has a particular file open. This file is on our shared drive and recently we've had people open the file and leave their desk. They haven't input an Excel username so frequently we cannot tell who has the file open to ask them to close it.
I'm trying to write a macro that will tell me if the file is open and if it's open, who has it open (using their computer login name).
I have written a sub to open a txt file, but I want to then save it as Excel, with a filename (a variable). The variable is public, and is set by other subs. I have added the standard "save as..." button to my custom toolbar to use for this and the following code (taken from previous thread)
Public Sub SaveFile(ByVal SaveAsUI As Boolean, Cancel As Boolean) If SaveAsUI = True Then Application.EnableEvents = False Application.Dialogs(xlDialogSaveAs).Show MyVariable, FileFormat:=xlNormal, Password:="", WriteResPassword:="", _ ReadOnlyRecommended:=False, CreateBackup:=False Cancel = True Application.EnableEvents = True
End If End Sub
But it comes up with the original filename in the save as dialogue and txt file type. Any help would be great, this is used by inexperienced users and I don't want the original file saved as it's prevoius name and type
I have a sheet with part protection and have 4 columns that I want to enter data. Need advice on macro -columns cdef. When data in column c entered, go right two columns, enter data in column e, go right, enter data in column f, and go down, and back, to column c. That is on the next row down ready to enter next set of data.
I have utilized the search button here, but alas haven't found exactly what I am looking for. I have run into a wall and cannot seem to scale it. I am running excel 2000 and need some assistance with creating a search macro. I have a simple spreadsheet created with 3 columns and 500 rows. Column A is name, B is a given # and C is employee status. What I need the macro to do is once a user enters the employee #, it highlights and takes the user to the corresponding name (Column A). I apologize for asking a "novice" question, but i have very little experience in this side of excel.
Does VBA support any type of "browse for file" interface? I'm thinking something similar to an inputbox, but instead it gives you the standard looking windows explorer window to find a file (think adding an attachment in outlook). The function would return a string.
