Find And Replace Function Using Cell References And Wildcards
Mar 29, 2012
Any way to use a find and replace function involving a cell reference. I have a spreadsheet with ton of junky text burying information that I want. Here is a simplified example
A B
Book 345353hg dgdgsdgfd fff Book belongs to Jim
Sneaker fdg4 Sneaker is worn by Jan
Gum dfg s d e te4345Gum tastes great
Cake jklsjflsjfjikCake smells delicious
The pattern is that the A1 text appears in the B2 text. What I want is
Find *A1
Replace with blank
Find *A2
Replace with blank
and etc.
So that in the end, I get this:
B2
belongs to Jim
is worn by Jan
tastes great
smells delicious
I've looked at the functions of find, replace, substitute, left, and right and I can't seem to find the right one to do what I need.

I recently became owner of a spreadsheet with some issues, and I am trying to make it useful. Each row has a URL of a blog post, and I want to extract the date from it (which is present in each URL) while getting rid of the rest of the URL. I was able to get rid of everything up to the year (which comes first), but then the URL continues, for example, 2013/05/16/the-rest-of-the-url/ and I would like to just have 2013/05/16 remain.
I am trying to use find and replace with the find box reading 2013/??/??/*/ and replacing it with 2013/??/?? which effectively erases everything else in the url, but leaves ?? instead of the numbers. Is there any way to have it so that it keeps whatever was in the original box?

I'm doing a search simular to this
=VLOOKUP(D*,Sheet2!A*:B*,2,FALSE)
and I want it replaced with this
=VLOOKUP(D3,Sheet2!A1:B42,2,FALSE)
HOWEVER when I do the find & replace I don't want it to change whatever the current value is to D3 I want it to stay as whatever it was already....so how do I exempt the "D" value from the search?

I have about 80 cells in a row with a varient of this in it:
=VLOOKUP($C2,LookupData!$B$494:$G$699,6,FALSE)
The strings on the LookupData sheet change to look for different things, but
I want to modify to this:
=(.01*VLOOKUP($C2,LookupData!$B$494:$G$699,6,FALSE))*$F2
I can locate all the cells in question using EDIT>REPLACE,
FindWhat=VLOOKUP(*,*,*,*)
But when I put this
=(0.01*VLOOKUP(*,*,*,*))*$F2
in the ReplaceWith box, and try to replace, I get an error message saying the formula contains an error.
Once I figure this out, I'm filling down about 60000 rows, so I'd like to get it right the first time.

I am using a macro to find a value in a cell and if found, replace the value in the cell to the left. Thr macro works fine - unless the value I am searching for does not exist. The answer is ( Ithink) an IF statement, but I am having problems with the errors, when I try the IF.
The macro below blows up at the ActiveCell.Offset(0, -1) = "109073X line with an error "Run-time error "1004" - Application-defines or object-defined error.
I've tried a number of things I've seen from this board but have not found a way past the error.
If the value is found, the macro moves to the else statment and stops at the ActiveCell statement with the above error. If the value is not found, then the macro goto NotFound.
Sub Macro2()
'
'Range("A1").Select 'Start from the home cell
Dim ValueFound As Object
Set ValueFound = Cells.Find(What:="Cirrus Reversals/CREDITS")
If ValueFound Is Nothing ThenGoTo NotFoundElseActiveCell.Offset(0, -1) = "109073X"'ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "109073X"End If
NotFound:
End Sub

Need assistance with the code for catching errors when using the find / replace function in excel? In particular, I am trying to write code to break to an error message when the value or string searched for isn't found in the find / replace. At the minute I have just copied the standard code using a macro and all this does is return a message box saying X entries replaced.

Here is the situation:
- Large block of text in one cell (1000+ words).
- I use the Find & Replace function (from the top menu) to find a specific word that may appear several times within the cell.
- Excel "highlights" the cell... but not the word specifically so I have to read all the text to find that word throughout the cell.

I'm receiving this message when I attempt to use the Find, Replace function. Formula is too long". I have a column of cells containing text only. ( about 2-3 paragraphs worth) I'm trying to replace a name with another name, which works fine where the cell contains a single or few sentences, but fails to replace when the cell contains too much information.

I am trying to create a macro where it finds a a certain word in a column for example C. What i want it to do is find anything that says FWD_EUR and then replace that cell (e.g C2) with CASH_EUR_FWD and after it has done that it replaces the adjacent cell (e.g. D2) with EUR_FWD. I then want this to do the same with FWD_USD to CASH_USD_FWD and adjacent cell to USD_FWD.

I have two sheets. One is named sheet1 where all my data is and sheet2 where all my values are. I want to do a find a replace on column N (sheet1) using the data in sheet2. Column A on Sheet2 has all the values that are found in column N and column B on Sheet2 has what the data should change to.
So for example:
Sheet1 says the following on column N:
cat
dog
lion
bear
Sheet2 says:
Column A
A1: Cat
A2: Dog
A3: Bear
Column B
B1: 2
B2: 8
B3:15
I want the values on column N to be replaced with 2, 8, 15 and so forth. I use excel 2010.

example cell C1 contains the value 00100300308W400
I'm trying to edit this entry to show 00/10-03-003-08W4/0.
I've tried using wildcards with the SUBSTITUTE function:
=SUBSTITUTE(C1,"***************","**/**-**-***-****/*")

In cells G2 to G57 I have the months from Jan-09 to Aug-13. In H3 to H57 I have the monthly data. In cell k2 I am trying to average all of the December data without individually clicking each cell (Ex: Dec-09, Dec-10, Dec-11, Dec-12). I was thinking of doing Averageif formula like =AVERAGEIF(G2:G57,"Dec*",H2:H57) but I get the dreaded #DIV error.

Is it possible to replace the Pivit table name/reference in a GETPIVOT function with a cell/range reference? I can on other components of the function call, but not that. For example ... the "hardwired" function call might be:
=GETPIVOTDATA(" Sum of 1991",'[EE_financial data.xls]Sheet1'!$A$3,"Company","ERG","Item"," Depreciation & Amortisation")
I can achieve the same result by externalising the 1991 and ERG, so i replace this with other dates or names, thus:
ERG
1991=GETPIVOTDATA("Sum of "&C13,'[EE_financial data.xls]Sheet1'!$A$3,"Company",D12,"Item"," Depreciation & Amortisation")
.. and this works fine.
However, if I try and replace the '[EE_financial data.xls]Sheet1'!$A$3 with a reference to a cell containing that string, it returns #REF!

I have a spreadsheet which shows a matrix in pounds. But I would like to have a reference cell somewhere near the top which will automatically show the conversion to kilos of any selected cell. Is anyone aware of a function which will do this?
For example, one pound equals 0.45359237 kilos.
Cell A1 contains the reference function to the active of selected cell. If I click on B1 which contains 12, cell A1 would automatically show 5.45. If I click on cell C1 which contains 20, cell A1 would automatically show 9.09.
So I’m thinking it would be something like
=SelectedCell/0.45359237 or maybe =ActiveCell/0.45359237

I've inherited a workbook with 100 or so tabs. There are absolute references to cells on the summary page scattered about all over the place. Hundreds of them, all over everywhere, with no easy way to find them.
Now they want to be able to add/delete rows on the summary page and sort.
I want to replace their absolutes with named ranges. Is there an easy way to find every cell that references the summary sheet?
I have not used Excel since the 80's (when I knew everything about it), but obviously that was many versions back... I jumped into using VBA, and that's starting to make sense, but I'm still missing some of basics.
Using Excel 2003.

I'm using Excel 2003 and I'm trying to make my LINEST function and the source cells for a scatter graph use the cell range specified in another cell in the document. I figured out that it was simple to do the following:
I250 contains: 10, shows: 10
I251 contains: ="I"&I250, shows I10
But I can't figure out how to do this in a larger function. I've tried a few things but none of them work. Here is an example where I want it to do a LINEST with y values in cells Ja - Jb and x values in cells Ia - Ib (where a and b are integers specified in cells I250 and J250 respectively):

I'm trying to create a dynamic COUNTIF function that references a previous cell.
For example, if I have 10 columns:
A B C D E F G H I J
a 1 b 2 c 3 a 1 b 3
I am trying to write a function that will let me reference A1:J1 and then if the cell contains an A, do a countif among the cell+1 for cells that have a value of "1". In this example, that function would return a count of 2. I think that I need some kind of combination of IF, INDIRECT, and COUNTIF, but I'm not sure how to string them all together--or maybe there's another way altogether.

I am using vlookup to get a cell value from another sheet, but if the cell has "&" or "/" I need to substitue "&" and "/" with "and" so that the cell can be added later to a url.
i am using =VLOOKUP(a1,Sheet2!A1:W17968,6) to get the value of a1 in sheet 2 and return the value of column 6
this will return "Audio Cables & Leads" but i need it to say Audio Cables and Leads
I need the formula to also check and replace "/" with "and" as well so cables/wire will be Cables and wire

I'm working in Excel 2010. I'm trying to create a dynamic range, using the OFFSET function. I've got it working beautifully but as soon as I save it and close the Name Manager the range stops working. When I go back into Name Manager I find all the cell references have changed (from C1:C600 to C1048572:C595 - or some other strange range).
P.S. What it's doing isn't so important as when the cell references are right it works. But just for full info: It's an OFFSET function, starting at A1. It will look at a list of companies and use a Match function to find out how many rows to offset (based on where the first instance of a particular company. And it uses the COUNTIF to make the range the same number of rows as there are entries for that company.
Here is my broken function:
=OFFSET('Map Point'!A1048572,MATCH("Company Name",'Sheet Name'!C1048572:C595)-COUNTIF('Sheet Name'!C1048572:C595,"Company Name"),0,COUNTIF('Sheet Name'!C1048572:C595,"Company Name"))

So have large spreadsheet with grid of elevations. Each column/row is 1 foot grid. There are blanks in it where there was no elevation data available. I need to interpolate those elevations using the surrounding known elevations. I can setup the interpolation just fine using a circular reference but what i am having trouble with is getting formula into all the cells. I need to replace blanks with formula that averages all four cells around it.
This will result in circular references that will interpolate from known points nearby. So for example if cell D4 was blank formula needs to be
=(D3+E4+D5+C4)/4. D5 would be =(D4+E5+D6+C5)/4.
I have been playing around trying to make a macro or something to do this but am not having any luck. Basically need to find/replace all blanks with formula above but so the formula references the cells around it properly.

I have a file that I import into excel and append to the end of the last free position, However my totals are slightly out when compared to the main system.
I have found the reason why, they randomly slips in a Credit or credits.
So I have the scenario column P has a txt field and the majority of the time it has SI (Invoice) however when they issue a credit the txt becomes SC.
The annoying bit is that Column L has a value but it is not a negative number i.e. 75 where it should be -75
I can do an iF then and find the SC or SC's and I can place some text in Column L but I would like to be able to take the value in L and make it a negative number.

This problem has come up fairly frequently lately, and I'm not sure how to fix it, or if this is by design...but in Excel 2003 I can't seem to do a "Find and Replace" based on the value of a cell. I can do a find, based on cell value, but the moment I change to the replace tab, the "values" and "comments" are missing from the "look in" dropdown.
I've only noticed this when I'm trying to replace on a filtered list, so I'm not sure if that is part of the issue.
Perhaps an alternative way of arriving at the same goal. Basically I have a worksheet with a number of filtered columns. They are filtered just right, using custom filtering, and so I do not want to undo the filters. In some columns I have formulas that are returning #VALUE! errors. I'd like to replace all of these cells with NA.
