Excel 2007 :: Permutations Of Text String For Phone Scripts
Mar 21, 2012
I have phone scripts that can be built from 6 different categories. Each of the 6 categories has anywhere from 1 to 11 different scripts within them.
I want to generate every possible script from these options, i.e:
Part I:
"Hi, as of 8am, on march 20th"
Part II:
"our records indicate 2 changes"
"our records indicate 50 changes"
"our records indicate no changes"
[Code] ......
I am using Excel 2007.

I'm pulling phone numbers out of text strings. There is text string ("Office:") indicating that the number following is an office number (the number that I need). MID and FIND take care of this. There are sometimes two instances of office numbers in single text string, so adding a second column using the third argument of FIND lets me start another search past the first instance of an office number. We have a bunch of office numbers with the qualifier "(Text)" after the original "Office" but before the phone number. How do I catch these ones?

Is there a way to extract a phone number out of a string of text. The phone number will always be expressed the same way (eight digits seperated by a space half way through) - 9999 9999. But the text before and after the number is random. Is there a macro to do this on a large scale? The method needs to be applied to hundreds of these strings, each on a new line.
An example of the string of text with the phone number underlined:
Alesdro 0 63PnantCey4281 5919 Aledio daSisaon' Brglry

I am trying to format a cell (in Excel 2010) as a phone number. The problemis that the data comes over from our download as text. Is there an easier way then using the 'SUBSTITUTE' function to change format to a true phone number (so that we can mail merge into WORD)? Since it is extracted out as a text, using the 'phone number' format (under special) will not work. Using the 'SUBSTITUTE' formula to remove the parenthesis', the dash and the space work but is cumbersome.
Below is an example of the text format that is being extracted: (706) 378-7585

I'm looking for a formula that can determine whether a given sub-string appears in a string. For example if cell A1 contains the string "bathing", and cell A2 contains the sub-string "bat", the formula in A3 would return "TRUE".
However, if the sub-string in A2 is changed to "cat", the result in A3 would be "FALSE". The formula would need to work with strings of different and unpredictable lengths.

Problems are this works for the 29 weeks of this year but more weeks need added to the end of the year as we get there. Can i generate the array numbers from a formula and shorten.

I vaguely recall someone telling me there is a way to "eval" or run a string as a formula.
For example, suppose I have a text string 0.15*b15
I want to process it as if it was =0.15*b15

I have the following code which compares a string between two sheets. First sheet is 'data', second is 'saw'. I'm trying to copy an array of numbers (energy consumption for each hour of the day) based on machine ID and date (hence the compare string). How to modify it so it will copy the array of 24 number, not just the first number?
I have a few worksheets 'saw', drill, lathe. So I am using ActiveSheet, so I can run the same macro as all data is in the 'data' worksheet.
Sub test_copy()
Dim a, i As Long, txt As String
a = Sheets("data").Range("a1").CurrentRegion.Value
With CreateObject("Scripting.Dictionary")

I'm trying to figure out how to generate all combinations from a list
of N values in a column, let's say column A. In particular, I want to have all combinations of 2 values, 3 values, 4, ... up to 7 values. To give an example: Let's assume I have a list of only 3 values (1,2,3) for which I want to have all combinations of two values. In this case, the result would be 1,2; 1,3; and 2;3. The ordering of the values does not matter, i.e. duplicates should be eliminated.

I have trying to assign cards to respondents to view. I have 16 cards total which are grouped in sets of 4. Each set (of 4) is given a color, (red, green, blue, and yellow). Each color has a 4 different shades (S1, S2, S3, S4) so I have the following 16 cards:
1: Red_S1
2: Red_S2
3: Red_S3
4: Red_S4
5: Green_S1
6: Green_S2
7: Green_S3
8: Green_S4
9: Blue_S1
10: Blue_S2
11: Blue_S3
12: Blue_S4
13: Yellow_S1
14: Yellow_S2
15: Yellow_S3
16: Yellow_S4
I will have a total of 10 respondents giving their opinions who will each see 5 of the cards, randomly. Each respondents must see each color at least once (given that 5th card will be a repeated color). Each card must be tested 3 times (given that the 2 additional cards can be any of the cards).
If there a function or cell code that I can write so that I can allocate the card #s (1-16) across my 10 respondents?

How do I use an Excel formula to find which (if any) multiple sets, each of up to 50 words, exist in a series of rows of a spreadsheet - if set A has one or more words found in a searched cell.
A positive result will return a specific value in the designated result cell. If none of the words in Set A is found in the searched cell, the formulae will repeat the test for the words in Set B, and so on.
After all 50 sets of words have been tested, the formula will move to the next cell in the searched column.
New words will be added to the sets of words continually as required.
Multiple words within sets are included in double quotes. Within each set of words there will be some n-tuples of words (i.e. 24 adjacent words) that contain one or more of the words in the set, but for which the formula will be required to return a negative result. Example: Set A = word 1, word2, word 3, "word1 word2 word3". (The words within a set could also be each entered in separate columns, as opposed to all included in a single cell.) The single column of text to be searched is about 10,000 rows.
I am wanting to use the above in a spreadsheet that contains data downloaded from a series of bank accounts to automatically allocate items of expenditure to one of 20 or so different categories of expenditure.
The formula will search the description field to find words that are used in the in the downloaded files from the various accounts to describe each transaction.
If a word describing travel expenditure (e.g. hotel, "holiday inn" but not "holiday travel") is found in the description of an expenditure item - the item cost will be allocated to the TRAVEL EXPENDITURE column, which is one of 20 or so different categories of expenditure.
Happy to consider a different solution if the task can be done better a different way.
Tried using a combination of INDEX/SEARCH/IF in Excel, but was not able to get a correct result. PS I am using Excel 2011 for Mac - which does not allow macros, so the solution needs to be entirely formula based.

The problem is that there are two sets of up to thirty three (33) numbers each, numbers are NOT duplicated in each set. The goal is to make an excel file that combines all the numbers from both sets in combinations of five numbers each. There should be a maximum of three numbers chosen from each set, in order to limit the total numbers chosen.
I would like to see the five set listed on the left of the excel file and the intended numbers sets on the right of the same sheet. This would permit me to see at a glance if there are any missing numbers.
For instance, from the first set of numbers 1, 2, 3 are chosen and from the second set numbers 30, 31 are chosen. Therefore the table would show as:
1, 2, 3, 30, 31.
1, 2, 3, 30, 32.
1, 2, 3, 30, 33, ...
1, 2, 4, 30, 31
1, 2, 4, 30, 32, etc.
This would continue until all of the numbers are used with each number listed in a separate excel box but next to each other without the comma.
each numbered set of five numbers does not have any numbers repeated (i.e. the number three appears only once per set of five numbers).
If further clarification is needed please go to: [URL] ..... where n=33 and r=3.
Repetitions are NOT allowed and order is important. This will calculate a total of 32,736 permutations to choose from. NOTE: this calculates the first set of three numbers only and is used as an example of the intended output, however the second set of numbers is not included there which I would like to have included in the excel file.

Time spent on each page appears in row 18. Need to sum up all of these pagetimes for each site, to get the total time on site. So in the example below,
D19 would reflect the total time spent on GreenElectricalSupply.com sum of cells D18-G18(1:23.0)
and H19 would display the total time spent on Rexel.com (00:45.0)
So, how to do a conditional sum across row 18, until a new site begins (indicated by the appearance of text in the next cell of row 8).

I am running MS Excel 2003.
A user inputs a string of letters/symbols all meaning different things. These would typically for my case be L, R, +, -, F. These items correspond to certain behaviors. Essentially I'm working on a L-System solver for those of you who are well versed in math. For those of you who aren't, I'll explain a bit.
An L-system starts with a string, for example:
LFL+F+LFL
and then has one or more generators:
L:-RF+LFL+FR-
R:+LF-RFR-FL+
then at each iteration of the system, every L and R in the previous iteration gets replaced with that string. The +/- are incremental angles.
I need to be able to take each iteration and convert it into a series of rows with one character in each row. I need it to do this automatically, and automatically adjust to the proper length of rows (these strings can get thousands of characters long because each iteration of the system converts the Ls and Rs into longer strings containing more of all of those letters.) Once each of those rows are constructed, I need it to run some mathematical operations on each of these rows automatically.
For example, for each + or -, the value in an angle column should change by an increment given elsewhere in the sheet. For each F, the x and y coordinates should change from the previous iteration based on the angle (just a basic d+dcos(ang) or d+dsin(ang) where d is a distance multiplied by a scaling factor).
I have no experience with Macros or any type of scripting, so if I can keep this in an Excel formula, that would be ideal. I know a minimal amount of C++ and Python, but that's the extent of my programming knowledge.

I export data into Excel format from a corporate reporting tool. 1 column includes a product description in text format, however, due to the many different products I need to count the number of cells based on a single word in the product description.
Hypothetical Example:
The report contains various information about vehicles. The product description exports to a single column and may include "Ford Fusion", "Ford Focus", "Chevrolet Malibu", "Chevrolet Impala", etc. I only need to count how many cells contain information about Fords and Chevrolets. The model detail is not needed.
I'm able to count if I enter the complete and exact make & model description, but want to avoid this due to the large quantity of products.

Excel 2007 on windows 7 professional.
We've got an end user who opens a .dat file which is delimited with semi-colons, replaces some text in a couple of columns then saves as a text tab delimited file. She swears that before today, the saved file would retain the semi-colons. Now she says it's not. she generated a new .dat file for me and recreated the process, with the resultant semicolon-free file. I asked her to generate another one and send it to me. I opened it first in notepad, and saw the semi-colons.
Opened it in excel (I'm using 2010 on win 7 professional), which saw it as a delimited file and asked me to specify the delimiter. It shows up fine, all the columns are righteous. I made no edits and saved as a text tab delimited, and that saved file had no semi-colons in it when I opened it. This seems normal to me; there's no semi-colons in the excel file, so why would there be in the text tab delimited file. I asked her coworker to generate another .dat from his pc and let me know what he sees, but he hasn't reported back yet.

I am struggling with doing a sort, of a group of alpha characters within a cell (Excel 2007). My data was exported from Oracle 8 as a varchar2 and consists of letters.
Example of what I have
BAC
GHL
DFE
MEG
Example of what I want
ABC
GHL
DEF
EGM
All I could find were these complex looking solutions involving cursors, plsql, etc. I'm hoping there's a simple solution, maybe within Excel. I've tried different formatting, made sure no other characters were sharing the cells, and tried typing fresh data into a cell (instead of the exported data).
