how to recode a variable. Suppose I have a variable for Ethnicity and this is a text variable, and I would like to get a numeric variable out of it. I tried to use IF but it works only for one condition or for nested conditions, which is not my case. What I would need is something like= IF(B2=Black,1, IF B2=White, 2, IF and so on)
Is there a way to do this without writing a code in VBA?
I have been looking everywhere for this. In SPSS, it is very easy to recode data, but how do you do this in Excel? For example, researchers often "reverse" their questions on surveys with Likert scales to eliminate respondent errors. In those questions, you want 1=5, 2=4, 3=3, 4=2, 5=1. Is there a plug-in or some other formula that is out there?

I am relatively new to macros and trying to understand how to modify a certain macro that I recorded. Here is what I'm trying to do...every month I have a file with a bunch of data. I need to take that file, filter it, and pull certain data from it into separate tabs within the same workbook. The number of rows of data will change from month to month however I'd like to have a macro that will capture however many lines of data. I have several rows/columns of info I need to copy between tabs but I recorded a macro with just one filter and one row of data for now just to try and understand what I need to do. I'm trying to call another sub with a variable string. I'm using excel 2007. I get the error "Compile Error: Expected Sub, Function, or Property" on the "Call" code. The want the code to run multiple different subs based on user input. For example if they typed "this" it would run the t sub, then h sub, then I sub and finally the s sub.

The only thing that isn't working, is the find function. I want to find "Brand" & variable. So when my variable is "medicijn1", then I want to find "Brand medicijn1". However, when I try, it gives me the following error:

So, I need some way to display a single instance of each manager name with a count of how many customers are associated with that manager. The number of managers and the number of customers associated with each manager does vary and are displayed in separate columns per the attached.
I have a macro that inserts a photo via a photo path that has been set as an object variable. This macro has always worked for me in Excel 2003 but after updating to Excel 2013, the macro gives me a "runtime error 1004 - unable to get the insert property of the picture class". When I debug, Excel crashes.
The macro is designed to loop through up to nine fields (in 9 adjacent columns) and find a photo path for a picture, insert the picture, and print that page, then go to the next column, get the photo path and insert that picture and repeat. The initial part of the macro is as follows. The PhotoID as Object seems to be what no longer works...
I do not care if the inserted photos are maintained in the file when it is not connected to the3 drive hosting the photos, only that I can print them when the drive is available.

I have never used VBA in word before, so I am assuming I am making it more complicated than it needs to be. I have a macro that stores 20 excel values as variables, then opens up a word document. I want to replace values in word with my values in excel. I keep getting an error with the replace part. I do not want to use bookmarks or mail merge. MSWord is a reference in excel VBA.

I am looking to place a formula which will look like this:
=min("A2:?2"), where ? depends on "number of columns". If number of columns is 4, then it should be D, E or Z. Number of columns is specified as an integer in range("B2").
I do not want to do it in a macro, want to do it in the formula.
I have done this before, but can't quite remember. I have tried:

I am working with Excel 2010 and I have a problem that I can't seem to figure out. I am trying to find the first nonzero cell and begin an average function from that cell and down through 29 rows (a total of 30 rows).

these workbooks all have the same name with the date at the end

usually i use find replace to change the date one at a time, but doing that 365 (x how many cells i have referencing) times is redundant
i have seein INDIRECT of the cell changes but nothing for the workbook name chaning

using excel 07 i prefer not to use a macro for how i am doing this but if a macro is the only way then i cannot have it actually open the files to pull the data. i prefer no macro since i set it up for future dates so when the new file is created it automatically updates the reference.
my end result i usually have something like A1=referenced cell from first workbook, A2= cell from 2nd book, etc. sometimes B1 would = a different cell from first workbook and so on if i am trending multiple cells from the workbooks
I am attempting to pass a boolean variable between two macros. The SUBMIT macro calls the STATUS macro to do some verifications and the STATUS macro should return the boolean variable RDY back to the SUBMIT macro, but does not.

I have a pivot table that has several row labels and 1 column label. I am trying to create a Ranking table outside of the pivot table because I am using Excel 2007 and can't use the new Rank option in Excel 2010. My difficulty is in being able to rank each subgroup of the row labels.
I have thrown a column for "Target Rank" in the data, just to validate my calculation in the PivotTable worksheet, but it is only correct as long as all Company and Product Name options are selected for a given Sex, Age, and Scen Defn.
My non-dynamic formula is:

I have figured out how to make some of the items variable to this degree:

I know can make the $L$8:$L$30 copyable across columns by changing it to L$8:L$30.
My dilemma is several fold.
1. If I filter the Company or Product Name the $30 in the range no longer applies. Is there a way to make the bottom of each grouping dynamic?
2. Is there a way to make the item entry associated with the "Class" column label a variable so I can copy across columns?
3. Similar questions related to the row labels for Sex and Age?
4. Lastly, I can write an expression that would make my Rank columns blank if the Company column was blank, but is there a way to reset the data range to look at the next block? That is, if "Age" changed (was not blank) that would indicate the top of a block of data.
I have tried to think of ways to use INDIRECT and I don't know VBA well enough to do it in a macro.

Up and down arrows allow me to highlight an item but I cannot find a keystroke that allows me to select the highlighted item. Instead I have to lift my hand off the keyboard and use the mouse.

I would like to perform a sum of randomly generated numbers between 0 and 6, but I want the number of independent random numbers to be dependent on another cell. I have =SUM(RANDBETWEEN(0,6) and then I get stuck. Is there a way to perform the RANDBETWEEN(0,6) a number of times stated in another cell? In this case that value is 67 but it will vary from around 5 to 150. I think there is a way to do this with macros, but I am not versed in visual basic. I am using Excel 2003.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got some code which some one posted me a link to on here which set up a pivot table on more that 1 sheets (using excel 2002).
I inserted this code into a rountine I do daily which works fine.
The problem Im having is that Im getting more and more info which I need to pivot over more than one sheet. So I was going to amend the rountine so It picked what ever sheets are in the work book to pivot.
At the moment I have to go into the code and name the sheets to pivot. Is there some code which can work out how many sheets that need pivoting and just do it with out naming them? and also just add a new sheet with the pivot on rather than having to name the destination?

I am after tips on creating a macro in Excel 2010 where it will search a list of folder paths in a column on a spreadsheet and insert a jpeg within the sheet from that folder if it exists. If more than one jpeg exists i would like it to insert the first jpeg only. i have found tips where it will insert images if you know the filename, however I don't have this luxury as file naming routines vary from folder to folder the only constant is that the file is a .jpg format.

Part two is where I have problems.Part two is a little different because I have the same connection, but what changes is the table that I am looking at "tpoPOLine" instead of "tpoPurchOrder" and the where is now going to have a variable number of commands.
I want part two to be depend on part one. Under part one I want the result from column E to be a where statement in part two.

Now my problem is that sometimes the E column from part one ends up being 1 row, sometimes it ends up being 50 rows. I would like the code to change accordingly.
1. Pull everything from the SQL server filter once in excel. This is not as efficient as the database has ~300,000 rows in the tpoPOline table and would take a lot longer then needed.
2. Create a nested if table and

3. Rerun the query for each value in column E. That would require the connection to happen ~50 times which would not be that great, as well as I would have to copy and paste the data after each run as the tables cannot overlap.
What I am looking for is a way to run this only once, on one sheet, without writing a nested if table with 50 if's.
is there a way to reduce spaces between text stings to one space only when there are many spaces? To make it worse, the number of spaces between the text strings vary. I am using Excel 2010.

In excel, I am able to get the cell location through vlookup and get the correct column number/cell reference. When it gets to the paste location, I am stumped on how to format that line of code? Do I need sometime of variable? I tried to use the address/lookup code but it does not work.
