Limit Number Of Rows / Columns In Spreadsheet (beyond Just Hiding Them)?
Nov 27, 2013
I would love to be able to limit the number of rows in a specific sheet so that I can quickly carry formulas to the bottom of a worksheet without carrying them to row 1,048,576. I'm aware of options to hide rows and/or to limit the scrolling with the "view code" option on the worksheet tab; however, I'm mainly worried about worksheet performance. When I carry a formula down, I don't want to see a spinning blue circle run for minutes at a time, and I'm hoping to avoid the same spinning circle when I undo my formula. Is there any way to actually limit the number of rows, or is there any other limitation I could put in that would increase worksheet performance?

I have a macro that selects a range of about 20 columns and fills down. It works fine on my smaller set of data, but when I use one that has about 40,000 rows I get the error:
FillDown Method of Range Class Failed
It fills down about 7,000 rows, then fillsdown the first cell of the next row, but leaves the others blank. The entire range (including the nonfilled cells) is still selected.

How do I get the effect of hiding unused rows/column in the sheet, including headings, while the parts in use still display headings?
The pick below explains what I mean. [IMG][/IMG]

I have a macro that works great to hide rows with zeros in a specific column on one sheet. It is below:
Sub Hide_Rows()
Dim i As Integer
ActiveSheet.Unprotect Password:="Yourpassword"
Application. ScreenUpdating = False
Application.Calculation = xlCalculationManual
For i = 9 To 408
If Sheets("Tasks and times"). Range("H" & i).Value = 0 Then
Rows(i & ":" & i).EntireRow.Hidden = True
End If
Next i
Application.Calculation = xlCalculationAutomatic
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
ActiveSheet.Protect Password:="Yourpassword"
End Sub
My problem is that now I want to adapt it to also hide columns on another sheet in the same workbook (named OBS). This is because in the first sheet rows 9 through 408 are used for data but that range is divided into 25 sets of 16 rows. Each set corresponds to a column on the other sheet starting at column C. I would like the corresponding column to hide when the first row of each set (i.e. rows 9, 25, 41, etc.) are hidden.

I have a project that needs to be done today. What I'm trying to do is hide an area of a worksheet using a button click, then display that area when the button is clicked again. This area is approximately the lower right quadrant of the worksheet, so it shares column and row information with other data that must remain visible. Is there any way to do this?
Alternatively, I was thinking about making a duplicate of the worksheet, but omitting the area I want to hide on the duplicate sheet. The button would then hide and unhide the two worksheets, hopefully making it have the same effect as hiding or unhiding just that area. If I do this, I would need to maintain the exact same data in the visible area of the two sheets.

I have a pivot table full of data that needs a macro/vba/something to loop through it and hide all rows that have no fill color. The table had 210 rows so I want a quick way of hiding the irrelevant ones (only the ones filled in green or red), and so all the ones with no fill need to be hidden. Something like a button to hide/unhode would be ideal.

I like the look of when only the used columns and rows are shown. I like to hide all unused columns and rows, and have the background and a minimalist spreadsheet.
HOWEVER, is it just me, or does Excel move a lot slower when thousands of rows and columns are hidden? Particularly, opening files seems to be slower. I'd love to delete them entirely from existence, so Excel only has a few rows and columns to work with, but that doesn't seem to be an option.

I created a macro that analyzes some datasets and according to different parameters it puts an X at the side of every cell that goes out of parameters. These Xs are all in columns named the same way for it to be easier to find. What I want to do is to write some macro that will hide every row where the data did not go out of parameters to be able to easily see where it did. In the following example it would need to hide the second row since there are no Xs in that row. One of the problems I'm having is that the amount of columns and rows is variable.

Below is the piece of code that I created to try to do this (G has the value for the amount of rows). I think it is working but it is either taking too long since it has to sometimes go through over 20k lines as much times as it needs to to cover all the rows that contain Xs or its getting stuck for some reason.
Code:
Worksheets(2).Range("I3:I" & G).EntireRow.Hidden = True
K = 0
Do Until Worksheets(2).Range("I1").Offset(0, K) = ""
If Worksheets(2).Range("I1").Offset(0, K) = "Functional Upset" Then

I have a spreadsheet for a couple hundred rows of data, and 6 columns. The fifth column contains a date. What I need to figure out is this:for every 3 rows of data, if the date diffes in column 5 (E), highlight this row and the previous 2 rows
Currently, I've been doing this all manually, row by row - needless to say, it takes me a few hours or depending on how much other work I need to do, a few days.

I am trying to count the # of rows in a spreadsheet in which there is non-blank text data in 2 separate columns. For instance, if the spreadsheet looked like the one below (dashes just for formatting purposes):
NAMES-------THIS-------------THAT
Mary-------some text--------some more text
John-------<blanks>---------just text here
Sue--------just some here-----<blanks>
Dave-------something--------something else
Adam------<blanks>-----------<blanks>
The total # of rows with something in both the "THIS" and "THAT" columns above would therefore be 2.

I work on a daily basis with spreadsheets in excel. The number of columns is the same, but every single spreadsheet has a different number of rows. I recorded this macro in a table with 1196 rows and I would like to use this macro also in other tables with a different number of rows.
Sub City2()

The first code hides everything just fine based on the date in A1. When I change it to the second code to delete instead of hide it is leaving a bunch of rows that the 1st code hides. Both codes have the same search criteria.
Code:
For Each cell In Range("B8:B5000") If cell.Value Range("A1").Value Then cell.EntireRow.Hidden = True
Next cell
Code:
For Each cell In Range("B8:B5000") If cell.Value Range("A1").Value Then cell.EntireRow.Delete
Next cell

I am running a macro that contains a template of a report and when it is done adding data to that report, it copies it to a new tab in the workbook, gives it a new name, and repeats with the next set of data in the blank template, over and over again.
Things work well, the code is correct. But I get to a point where the "Copy Sheet to new tab at end of workbook" doesn't work anymore. The copy sheet to new tab doesn't even work outside of the macro. Is there a limit on the number of sheets (it stuck at sheet 27) or a limit to the characters used across all sheets (my tab names can be long)?
The code I am using to copy to a new sheet is pretty simple:
Sheets("REPORT").Select
Sheets("REPORT").Copy After:=Worksheets(Worksheets.Count)
ActiveSheet.Name = SheetName & " Data Report"
Thanks for some clarifications about this problem. I am wondering if there is a limitation in excel that I don't know about.

In my Macro , i add a worksheet and depending on certain conditions i decide whether to populate it or not.
At a later point of time i am checking if the newly created worksheet is empty or not using the following check :
If ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets(ISheet).UsedRange.Rows.count <> 0 Then
Now what i have noticed is that even in cases where the "ISheet" is empty the above condition evaluates to true for the first attempt. I cannot understand why ?
let me know if the query is ambiguous and i will post the code snippet

I have a spreadsheet which contains data needing to be re-formatted into a suitable format for my database. So far I have been doing this by hand, but want to make it quicker as I have over 2000 lines to sort out. I am trying to write a macro that determines whether there is data in the column next to the active one (D2), and if there is counts how many columns there is data in. Once it has done this it needs to insert the same number of rows as there are columns, then copy the column data and transpose it into the empty rows. My macro seems to work at first, but it exits after around the 4th row, but I can't work out why.
Sub split_For_Database()
Dim No_Of_Cells As Integer
Dim Start_Cell As Range
Dim Cell As Range
Dim LastRow As Range
Dim i As Integer
Dim lRows As Long
Set LastRow = Range("C65536").End(xlUp)
i = 0
Set Start_Cell = Range("C2")
Set Cell = Start_Cell
Do While Start_Cell.Address <= LastRow.Address
Do While Cell.Offset(0, 1) > 0
i = i + 1
Set Cell = Cell.Offset(0, 1)
Loop...................................

lets say i have 200 used columns. if i delete 150 of them and then (without saving the file) try to add 100 more i get an excel has reached its limit error. theoretically 200-150+100 = 150 columns, which should be well within the 258 column limit. but excel still gives me the error )its like its calculating 200+100=300 > 258). HOWEVER, if i save the file after deleting, i dont get any errors at all. is this a "feature" of excel and if so is there anyway of circumventing it? because i dont want to save the file prior to adding the columns (i do the whole thing in vba). actually i dont want to save the file at all unless the user click on the save button or choose save/save as from the menu.

Is there a way to fix the the allowed numberformats in a workbook?
For example, is it possible to have only the following numberformats in a file : 0.0, 0.0% and $0.0. The file should not allow any other formats, and the user should not be able to create custom formats.

I am using a diamond shape that is copied into the active sheet when the user runs a macro. The user then selects the shape and enters some text. I want to limit the characters to a certain number or at least be able to give the user some advice when they enter too many characters.
I have found that, as long as I have manually named the shape "Diamond1", I can get the count in my immediate window with the following:
?ActiveSheet.Shapes("Diamond1").TextFrame.Characters.Count
but I want the count to relate to the active shape. So I tried:
?selection.shapeRange.TextFrame.Characters.Count
and I get a "runtime error 438 Object doesn't support this property or method".
How should I count the characters in the selected shape, and then if it is over say 12, require the user to shorten it or at least present yield a message Box?

I'm trying to create a macro that transposes data from columns to rows.
My source data is laid out so Column A and B contain item identifiers, and then the header for Column C to Column S contain dates (March, April, May, etc) and the row data below contains quantities for each month. This is on Sheet1.
I need my end data (on Sheet2) to have the item detail in Column A and B, the quantity in Column C and the Date in Column D. If there is a date that has no quantity then it should be skipped.
Sample Source Data (Pipes added for clarity, they aren't in the actual data)
Part |Description |June 4 |June 11 |June 18
A | PartA | 5 | | 12
(Please note June 11 has no quantity)
Sample Destination Data:
A | Part A | 5 | June 4
A | Part A | 12| June 18
Below is the start of the code, obviously I have a ways to go before it's fully functional but hopefully you get the idea how I'm trying to attempt this. Where I'm having issues right now is referencing columns by number. Is there a way to do this so I can do Column = Column + 1 to advance columns to the right? Or any better way to address this all together?
HTML Code:
Sub ConvertToRows()
Dim ReviewRow, ReviewRowEnd, PasteRow, ColumnNumber As Integer
ReviewRow = 2
[Code]....
