Randomly Select From Alphabet Based On Letter Frequency Distribution

Jan 8, 2008

I want to randomly select letters from this distribution (to make random words) but I want the more frequent letters in the distribution to be selected more often so that the word I form have the same distribution. I have the feeling there is a simple solution to this but I couldn't see anything other than the frequency function that I thought I might be able to use. I could populate an array with letters present in numbers according to their frequency and then randomly select from it but is there a more elegant solution? .......

Jump To Names Based On Alphabet Letter

Mar 20, 2009

I have a long list of names and right now I have to scroll down the list like crazy to get to some of the letters (xyz for example).

I really wanted to setup a clickable row or column that has one letter in each row or column, but I'm not sure I can do that as the sheet is already formatted. But I could just use one cell where I could click in it and type a letter which would jump me to the portion of the list that starts with that letter.

or I guess maybe something that pops up a requestor for me to enter the letter.

I found some stuff that was close on here that had some of the functionality I needed, but I couldn't piece it together.

I'm trying to go through David's books, but I haven't had a lot of time and I'm not getting some of the basics.

CountIf: Frequency Distribution Of The Yields Column

Feb 2, 2010

I'm working on has me making a frequency distribution of the yields column. If you look at M6 on the spreadsheet i'm trying to use the formula:

=COUNTIF($I$6:$I$35, "<=L6")

to represent all yields that are less than or equal to 0, in the next box (M7) I want to represent all yields that are greater than 0% and less than or equal to 1%. etc until I reach 7%, however the original formula isn't working and I don't know whats wrong with it.

Creating Frequency Distribution Chart From Large Dataset - VBA?

Dec 16, 2013

I have a table that can at any point have from a couple hundred up to a couple thousand rows. Within this table lies a column entitled " Offer ". I want to plot the figures in the offer column as a frequency distribution chart.

I plan to do this by listing the x-values (Offer figures), and then using count if formulas to calculate the frequency of that x-value. Then using a simple clustsered column chart to create the visualisation of the frequency distribution.

My question is.... in my large data set, is there any way to get VBA to insert a list of the range of figures in the Offer Column, ? I can figure out how to copy down the countif formula to populate the corresponding frequency column, but how can I have some VBA to dynamically adjust my x-values (offer figures)?

For example... say in the first data set I have

Offer, Frequency
1 10
2 20
3 25
4 20
5 15

that's fine if I make the chart, but what if the data set changes, I want VBA to give me a list of all the offer values, and then I can write some code to insert and copy down along the frequency column the countif formula.

The ultimate goal is to have a frequency chart that will be synced to the self-updating dataset.

Randomly Select Cells Based A Couple Rules

Nov 6, 2007

I have a sheet that has 13 players listed in rows down column A. I have 6 columns each representing a quarter in a game. I was wondering what the best way would be to randomly select 5 players in each column and to distribute each cell selection as equally as possible over the 6 quarters.

So what I am doing is having excel designate equal amounts of playing time for each player each game.

Is this possible.

Can I base this off of previous games?

Select Valid Entries Based On Letter Entered

May 26, 2009

I tried to search the forum with the above title but keep getting a fatal error.
My worksheet contains a data entry column that is verified against a named range entitled "Categories". If you click on the down arrow, it displays all the valid entries. What I'd like to do is enter in the field the first letter of the entry and display only those valid entries that start with the letter I entered. For example, if I entered "c", the validation screen would display:

Car Insurance
Car Payment
Car Repair/Tires
Charity
Chase Mortgage
Church
Cleaning Supplies
Cleaning/Laundry
Contact Lens
Cosmetics

Then, if I entered "ch", the validation screen would display:

Charity
Chase Mortgage
Church

Select Fields At Randomly

Apr 11, 2008

I have a workbook with sheet 1 called Support which is basically an input form. The second sheet is called Database.

I want to enter data into the form and via a macro copy the data to the database. I have followed a text book to the letter on how this is to be completed to the letter.

My problem is that when the data is written to the database some of the fields are blank. Using F8 I can step through the VB script which appears to select fields at random.

Select Names Randomly

I have some code I found to accomplish this, but I'm not exactly what you would call VBA savvy. Could anyone look at this and see what I'm doing wrong? Or if it is right what I'm doing wrong to get it to work?

Randomly Select Value Meeting Criteria From Table

Jan 17, 2007

I have a table detailing products and product options showing the options possible for each product. Each row has an option class and value(in separate columns):Color Red,Color Orange,Color Blue,Style A Style B and so on. Each product is in column.

Valid options for a product are indicated with a 1, invalid options with a 0. See attached sample file.

For instance, if the product in question is Alpha, then available colors are red and blue.

For a given product I need to return a randomly generated valid option. As I want to be able to drop in additional products and options, I want to return a value without resorting to manually generating a column containing only the valid options. The real data set amounts to dozens of options types and hundreds of parts for which I want to generate test data.

Randomly Select Varied Amounts Of Data From A List

Sep 10, 2008

I have a list of people in column A and a list of Cities that they have visited in column B.

I need to check some of the cities they have visited monthly but don't want to check them all.

I have attached a sheet as an example (this has been scaled down).

The number of cities i want to check for each person varies each month depending on how many cities they have visited.

For example, John has visited 16 cities and i want to check 5 of them. I therefore want 5 random cities that he has visited to appear next to his name at the top. The real list of data is massive so this would be really useful if it is possible.

I have looked at rand but i can't get it to randomly give me more than one city, and i don't understand how to get it to give me say 5 cities one month and say 8 cities the next month purely based on a formula from another cell.

Return Column Letter Based On The Letter In A Cell.

For the below formula is it possible to replace the B's (column location) with a cell Say Z146 which contains the letter B (or a number if thats easier and someone can tell me the numbers for each column).

When the formula is dragged into the next cell (down) it takes its column reference from Z147 and then my life becomes so much easier.

=IF(INDEX('Overs-Unders'!B:B,MATCH($C145,'Overs-Unders'!$A:$A,0))"",INDEX('Overs-Unders'!B:B,MATCH($C145,'Overs-Unders'!$A:$A,0)),"")

Grey Out / Disable Cells In A Row Based On Frequency Value

Feb 14, 2012

Essentially, I'm creating a spreadsheet which contains a list of staff in rows, and the months of the year as columns. It is to record certain company checks which must be done (e.g. driving licence check). When a check is complete, the date it was done is entered under the corresponding month. Certain checks (e.g. driving license) only need to be done every 6 months. What I'm trying to do is find a formula/vba to look at each row, determine where (which month) the date was entered in, and grey out the 5 months in front, meaning the next check is required in 6 months time.

Ideally, the frequency of this check is dynamic, and can reference a cell (e.g. might change to every 3 months etc).

Return Range Of Numerical Values In Single Column Based On Frequency Percentage

Oct 25, 2005

I have a single column of numerical values that may repeat many times within
the column.

I require a flexible Formula:
Use an Input Cell for the specified and changeable Percentage(s) %.
Column may be filtered – so only take into account Visible Filtered Cells.

The Formula will calculate and Return the numerical range of values that fall
between the specified percentage % (using the Input Cell) e.g.; 70%.

The Formula should Return two numeric values: a Start Value and an End Value
– NOT necessarily the minimum and maximum per se BUT the MIN and MAX of the
values that appear 70% of the time in the column; therefore, taking into
account Repeat / Duplicate values.

The calculated Results: the two numeric values will be returned to separate
cells on a new Sheet.

Get Column Alphabet Based On Data It Contains Or Column Heading Using VBA?

Oct 28, 2011

How to get the Column Alphabet based on the Data it contains or the Column Heading using VBA?

Is it possible to get the Column Alphabet using any Macro or any function that within a Module it can always take the New Column Name during Execution..

Example: I have certain Columns where I have Yes and No Tick using the Wingdings P and Y..
Now these Columns are alternately Placed and there are six columns in all and they are spread over 12 Columns as the Alternate COlumns is reserved for Manual Entries.

Now I intend to increase the Manual Entry Columns but the problem is that every time I do that I need to make changes in my VBA Code.

Is it possible that even when the Columns are Inserted or Deleted in between before or after these columns I dont need to change the Explicit references by changing some approach.

I am not fuly conversant in VBA but use it whenever things are not completely feasible with Formulas AFTER GOOGLING.

Code:

Private Sub Worksheet_BeforeDoubleClick(ByVal Target As Range, Cancel As Boolean)
If Not Intersect(Target, Range("X3:X13")) Is Nothing Then ' You can Change the range here
Cancel = True

[Code]....

As you can see the Ranges are Alternately Placed and there are about 6 such Columns with the above TICKS..

Now, how do I keep it FLoating so that even after changing the COlumn Location it does not need to get Updated i.e. X and Z Column Alphabets..
