Sort Column Of Variable Length Alphanumeric Characters?
Aug 2, 2012
I'm trying to sort by a column with one to four digit numbers, any of which may be followed by a single letter, i.e. 1,2,3 4A,5, 10,11A,75,101A,600,705,1010B,1011A.
I'd like them to sort in the above order. I am only able to have excel 2003 sort all of the numeric cells first, followed by the cells with the alpha character.

Ive written the macro below to sort Column A according to the length of the cell values in Ascending order. Ive done this by writing the length to Column B for each value and then sorting on column B. Surely there is a more elegant method, perhaps using arrays.
Sub SortIt()
Range("A1").Select
Do Until IsEmpty(ActiveCell)
ActiveCell.Offset(0, 1).Value = Len(ActiveCell)
ActiveCell.Offset(1, 0).Select
Loop
Columns("A:B").Sort Key1:=Range("B1"), Order1:=xlAscending
End Sub

I've set up a filing system which saves sheets/ workbooks based on the value of a cell - Range("B1") Everything works great apart from when ThisFile String length exceeds 31 characters which you may know is the max useable character length for a sheet name - I had no idea! 8-0
Is there a way i can check if string length exceeds 31 characters then, if it does, shorten it to 31 characters?

I've recorded this Macro to sort the cells in a column alphabetically if any cells have content.
I would like to use the Macro on the whole workbook however the AB column range varies between the worksheets.
How should I adapt this Macro to sort simply to the END of AB column??

My worksheet contains data with the reaction times on a psychological test. Each respondent in the test has 280 rows in my excel sheet.
The 'perfect' length of the row, is from A to M. When an error is made in the test, the length of the row will increase. So the error length can be A to AA.
For me it is important to analyse the error. So I would like to give a perfect row length, the value 1, and an error row length a value 2.
So, in conclusion:
If:
Cell length = A1 - M1? --> Copy A1 B1 C1 (A B Cof that row) to Sheet3, and give D1 in sheet 3 the value 1
Cell length >= A1 - M1? --> Copy A1 B1 C1 (A B C of that row) to Sheet3, and give D1 in sheet 3 the value 2

This question is about the need for staff to enter a code which they do manually - it is not a case of referencing a cell with a value in it and applying a formula to it to get the result I want as there is no other cell involved.
So they have to enter codes with the following format:
J0000000
Ie max 8 digits long, with the first letter being a J (it's always a J).
Can I use custom data validation to force it (so if the code was for eg J0000123 they could just type 123 and it would put the rest in for them??) - and would I set the cell to Number or Custom in terms of number format??

Have a spreadsheet that contains a column of 3 digit numbers as well as 3 digit numbers with 2 trailing alpha characters.
Example:
376
377
421
376AB
376XY
377NC
421GQ
421EF
Need to sort by this column, but, with the parameter of sorting first by the numeric only, and then by numeric with alphas. So, the above list would look like this sorted properly:
376
376AB
376XY
377
377NC
421
421EF
421GQ

I need to automatically populate a column with an alphanumeric MFR0001 to MFR9999 and am currently using the formula below to add 1 to the start point (A1)...
A1=MFR0001
Formula in A2 =LEFT(C1,3)&(RIGHT(C1,4)+1)
This works perfectly if I start at MFR1000, but breaks and drops the 000 if I use it on the number I need to start with (MFR0001).

I need a macro to delete only the alphabets which are entered along with numbers. Ex: 300ML. BY running a macro i need to delete only the "ML" and the number 300 should remain the same.
Range is For Rows: Entire rows
For columns: F TO P
The cell values betwwen these ranges contains alphanumeric such as 20KG,300ML,200M ...etc
Hence i need a macro to delete the alpha charecters for the particular range.

I have a worksheet that has a column labeled "Sort Order". It is always the farthest, right-hand column. I also have a macro that sorts and re-numbers the data in that column.
My problem is that I am constantly inserting columns, so the label/count of the actual column to be sorted changes. How do I write the VBA code to automatically determine the last column?

I am trying to remove all characters that aren't letters or numbers from a string. Is there any way to differentiate between a non-alphanumeric characters and alphanumeric characters? I'm thinking of something like "ISTEXT()" that I could use on one character at a time. Or are there any wildcards I could use in the Replace function?

I have a large column of text with multiple entries similar to this: PC3L-10600R-9-11-A0. I need to replace the "11" with a 13. However I have other instances where the 11 appears (PC3-12800E-11-11-D0 or PC3L-12800R-11-11-A0).
I have found that I can use SUBSTITUTION
{=SUBSTITUTE(A50,H50,I50,1) and =SUBSTITUTE(A61,H61,I61,2)}
to handle the specific instances but I'd like to have a way to combine this type of function logically in one command.

I need to insert 00 if the string of text = 13 in a specific column.
eg. Column K can contain any amount of lines of data. The data will either be 15 or 13 characters in length. If its length is 15 its fine, if its 13 I need to get it to 15 characters.
The first 6 characters are letters so if the length is only 13 I need to add the 00 in after the last letter.

Having trouble with this one. Searches seem to bring up every other variation of extracting info from strings except this.
I have cells which contain alphanumeric strings as below and, using a formula, I want to extract everything from and including the last letter to give A 2-3, B 3 and C 3-4 in the examples below.
Sub-base A 2-3
Sub-base B 3

I need to write a Excel VBA (2003) code that can arrange the cells of one column based on the character length. An example is this:
Column Data before Running VBA
(Column A)
cat
oranges
apple
Column Data after Running VBA
(Column A)
cat
apple
oranges
I been doing this manually by using the LEN() command in an adjacent column (Column B) and sorting Column A. based on Column B. However, I wish to do this all in a VBA code that does not rely on how many rows are in Column A. I have dozens of excel sheets with various number of rows for Column A. Therefore, the VBA code has to also figure out when the last non-empty row is in Column A. Can anyone offer their suggestions to my problem?

So I have got an identifier and a corresponding column of values. I need to calculate sum of those corresponding values for each identifier, so if identifier is 1993, I need to have a sum of all the corresponding values. These identifiers repeat, and I do not want to calculate sum for all of them, just the immediate identifiers (i.e. you have 1993, after that you may have 1994 etc etc and then at one point you will have 1993 again, but that "new" 1993 will have a different sum of course). Also, identifiers do not go in sequence sometimes (however, most of the case they do), for example 1993 may jump suddenly to 2004. The trick with all of this is variable "row width" of these identifiers...

Column M:
##/##/#### | Variable Length Text-####
Example:
01/06/2014 | Daniel Trimble-4048
I need to parse out the different parts of Column M.
In Column R -- "Close Date", I'm successfully using:
=LEFT(M2,FIND(" | ",M2)-1)
...to extract the close date of the donation.
In Column S, I want to list the donor name--which is all of the text after " | ", and before the "-".
I don't need anything after the hyphen, and fortunately in this data, no one's name has a hyphen in it.
The Close Date is working fine for the LEFT and FIND functions, but for the life of me, I can't seem to get MID to work for the variable-length text. The text will always start in the same position -- 14, as the date and delimiter are standardized. And the last 5 characters of the text are not variable in length, so they can be cut out completely.
How do I use MID to extract everything starting at position 14, and stopping 5 characters short of the end of the text?

I have a SS I would like to reference a cell in a column which changes in
length. In this case, I would like to reference the most current date in a
column.
Is there a simple method for doing this, as the data will routinely be
different lengths in that column.
Further, there is Data on the Horizontal that I would like to reference to
another cell in another sheet that would correspond to this date. Can anyone
give any suggestions as to the best way to accomdate this?
