Use VBA To Install Excel Reference
Nov 7, 2011
I was wondering if there was a way to use the Workbook_Open() event in Excel to install specific references. I tried to record a macro, and then open the VBA editor and then see what code it showed to install, but there was no code in the macro
I tried:
Code:
With Workbook.reference
.AddFromFile "C:WINDOWSsytem32.stdole2.tlb"
End With
Which is just giving the location of the reference I want to install, and It gives a debug error of Run Time Error 424 Object Required

I am running a fairly complex simulation at work and have quite a few different functions in it. For the simulation to work properly, i need to have the Solver add-in and the Analysis ToolPak installed. Everytime that i try and use the simulation on a different computer (or if anyone else tries to run it) the add-ins must be enabled again. Is there a way to set up a macro to enable them when either i open the simulation (first preference) or when a button is pressed (2nd preference).

I have encountered some difficulty in modifying a macro I wrote into what I need. I created a macro that searches a column (Column C) for a cell value of, "stop", and then it copies everything above that cell and pastes it onto another sheet. In the sample data set that I was using, "stop" first occurred in cell C541, so the macro copies C1:C540 and pastes it onto another sheet. The problem is that the macro created an absolute reference to C540. What I desire is for the macro to use the 'Find' function to locate the first occurrence of, "stop", offset one cell above that cell, and then reference the active cell (which was positioned by these last two steps) in the range that should be copied. Basically, I'm hoping to have cells C1 through the active cell copied and then pasted onto another sheet.
Code below.
Sub FAIL()
'
' FAIL Macro
'
'
Sheets("Reformatted").Select
Columns("C:C").Select
Selection.Find(What:="stop", After:=ActiveCell, LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt _
[Code] .......

I found this code in the posts to automatically install the Analysis ToolPak at Open.
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
AddIns("Analysis ToolPak").Installed = True
End Sub
I tried this in the workbook module but it doesn't seem to work. Is this code correct or have I done something incorrectly?
Also, are there any drawbacks to an automatic install of an add in like this and if it runs the code every time the workbook opens, is there any performance issues (maybe only opens a bit slower)?

I have a new workbook that needs to be printed to a specific printer regardless of who the user is. I am happy with the method used for doing this using the PrintOut function, but am trying to work out what to do in the event that the user does not have this printer installed. The logic, not in true VBA syntax, is as follows;
' Check Printer
If <This Printer> Is installed Then
Printout using <This Printer>
Else
Install <This Printer>
Printout using <This Printer>
I found a useful post about ascertaining whether or not a printer is installed, but can't find anything about actually installing a printer via VBA.

I am running Excel 2007 on my Windows Vista laptop. A workbook I've developed in Excel 2007 (compatibility mode) on my Windows Vista laptop has a macro that runs as expected on my laptop but will not run on my desktop which is running Windows 2000, Excel 2000.
I've addressed this question previously under the thread "Macro Bombs Excel 2000". I've not received a response as to why it won't run under Windows 2000, Excel 2000. I don't know if it's an Operating System issue or an Excel 2000 issue.
I'm developing this workbook for my children for their personal financial management. I'd like to determine if this is an Excel 2000 issue or an Operating System issue. Most of my children run Windows XP, Office 2000. I have a dual system on my laptop (Vista and XP).
I have a legal software license available for Office 2000. My question is, can I load Excel 2000 on my Vista, Office 2007 laptop. I've looked at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/218861/ and they talk about installing oldest versions first. I have Excel 2007 already installed. I don't particularly want to uninstall it. Can I install Excel 2000 without uninstalling Excel 2007?
1. Can it be done?
2. Can it be done without MAJOR operational issues.
3. What is the process?
4. Can I load ONLY Excel 2000?

Finally after 3 days of intensive studying VBA, my first add-in pack is ready to be installed in the office. I've got my custom form all ready, now all I need is to have excel create a custom button on the toolbar that calls up my custom form when clicked.
The idea of assigning a shortcut key doesn't really appeal to me. I'll be packaging it up in .xla format. Would be greatful if anyone can direct me on how to add a button to call up my form (only one form in fact).

The code below first asks a user to input a weekending date (which must be a Saturday). The value of the input box goes to cell C1 of my spreadsheet. That part works fine. I also have a function in Cell G1 with the function:
=TEXT(C1, "dddd")
I don't know if this is the best way to test for a Saturday but it is what I have,
Where is goes bad is if the date is not a Saturday. I have a loop to force a new date install via a input box but it won't update C1 with the inputed data to recheck for the Saturday value. Below is the whole code I am working with...
Dim aa As String
Dim bb As String
If Range("C1") = "" Then
Do While bb = ""
bb = InputBox("Please Enter a Weekending Date!")
Loop
Range("C1").Value = bb
End If
If Range("G1") "Saturday" Then
Do While aa "Saturday"
aa = InputBox("Weekending Must Be a Saturday. Please Enter a New Weekending Date")
Loop
Range("C1").Value = aa
End If

I have finally come up with a macro and would like to install it to around 10 people's "Personal Workbook" in my department. Let me explain a bit further...
We use web-based software which has an "Export to Excel" option which we all use. The resulting data populates into a spreadsheet automatically.
I would like the user to be able to click on Tools/Macro/Run Macro and then run that particular macro. I assume that this macro should be in the "Personal Workbook" so that the macro will be visible no matter what worksheet they may have open?
Can this be done automatically/with a macro or must this be manually done?
I"m using Excel 2003.

I've done this loads of times before but doing it this morning seems to not be working at all.
Previously I'd be in Sheet 1, I put the equals sign, I click into Sheet 2 in the cell I want, hit enter, and hey presto the external cell is referenced in Sheet 1.
However, what I'm trying to do here is not reference individual sheets within an excel document, but reference a totally separate Excel document. Can I do this or not?
If so how? Because when I select the second worksheet after I've entered the = sign, it just takes me to the second sheet - it doesn't seem to 'remember' that I'm in the middle of a formula.

I want to have 2 spreadsheets in File 1.
The first spreadsheet will contain a form that needs to be filled out by a user for a specific car. In the second spreadsheet, I want to have a list of the cars that have already been filled out in a form before.
So example, someone with a car got into an accident and the report is filed under vin:1234 and vin:1234 is added to the list in the second spreadsheet.
A couple days later another accident report is written up, but when the user enters vin:1234 in the form, it will notify the user that vin:1234 has a report already written up on it. The notification also asks if they want to open the file containing vin:1234. When they click 'yes', it will open the file and allow them to either use the current report for their own, or modify what was already entered.
Is this possible to do within excel? I would constantly update spreadsheet 2 with the vins that have been used to keep it as a database.

Excel 2010. When the result of the formula in Col. E is less than zero, I need to move the row to another sheet, and then delete the row.
I modified another poster's script as follows:
Private Sub Workbook_SheetChange(ByVal Sh As Object, ByVal Target As Range)
' Move rows with negative value in E to Flagged Items sheet
Dim rng As Range
' Set Target Range
Set rng = Target.Parent.Range("E2:E200")
[Code] ........
The script works perfectly if a negative value is manually entered into a cell in Col. E, but not when the result of the formula produces a negative number.
I can't find a way to make the Case Is < 0 act on the resultant value rather than the formula.
Is this possible in the script or is there another way to achieve the desired result?

How do you create a reference number to be posted in a userform2 that is opened from an earlier userform1 where you have entered some initialisation data and generated a source reference number. ie set of data has reference X and there will be y items in that set want references in form X01 to Xy (y unlikely to exceed 20). Want to put references 'X01' into the userform2 and cycle through data entry in userform2 from source reference X01 to Xy. (I'm having problems with the transfer from 1 to 2!)

I am currently using the below formula to add values (D6:D225 on sheets Mon, Tue, ...) given the criteria is met in any cells within the two columns across the five sheets (E6:E225 & N6:N225 on sheets Mon, Tue, ...).
When the references to the columns do not randomly change themselves to #REF! it works fine however, it does this often, forcing my to rewrite the formula.
**Why does it do that and is there a way to stop it?
Also, when I do have to rewrite I am forced to do each cell individually to change the number within the quotes. I have tried to use a cell reference there but when I do Excel just gives me a "0" as if there is no data to be retrieved.
I am using Excel 2010 on a company computer with the macros blocked so no VBA.
Code:
=SUM(IFERROR(INDEX(Mon!$D$6:$D$225,MATCH("2000",Mon!$E$6:$E$225,0)),0),
IFERROR(INDEX(Mon!$D$6:$D$225,MATCH("2000",Mon!$N$6:$N$225,0)),0),
IFERROR(INDEX(Tue!$D$6:$D$225,MATCH("2000",Tue!$E$6:$E$225,0)),0),
IFERROR(INDEX(Tue!$D$6:$D$225,MATCH("2000",Tue!$N$6:$N$225,0)),0),

The spreadsheet works in Excel 2000 when you open it in any newer version it is corrupted. Which is fine so we are rewriting it in Excel 2010/2013.
We have data in columns A:E which comes from the refreshable query. Data in F:I are different formulas based on the data from the query. The number of rows we get will vary from query to query. The headers never change just the data. How can we make it so that when no matter the data length the formulas will always autofill up or down depending on the data length?

I have two columns of data; one is in inches, one is in metres. If someone is inputting data from an original source that has the data in metres I want excel to automatically calculate and input the data into the inches column. Additionally, if they input the data from the source in inches, I want excel to convert it to metres and input into the other column automatically. The conversion factor from inches to metres is * by 0.0254. I am no expert but after looking for this on the internet I am sure this requires some sort of VBA event code (although I don't really know the first thing about VBA). The excel columns will be in the same worksheet. I don't have a circular reference like I would do using normal Excel formula? I am using Excel 2010.

Here is my situation:
I created one worksheet called: Assumptions. In this worksheet I have 6 different columns representing 6 different cases.
I have completed the first case in a different worksheet called: WL. I would like to copy this case/worksheet WL and be able to change all the reference cells used in case#1: WL to case#2: FA. So all the cells used in my Assumptions worksheet were in the B columns for case 1: WL, for case 2: FA they will all be in the C column, same row, different column.
Any quick way to do the changes?
My case #1 worksheet as over 10 000 formulas, I really don't want to change each and every formula.
I was thinking there was a way to highlight ALL the reference cells used in my Assumption worksheet, so I would have had to drag from B to C cells, only 50 cells. But I can't find it.

I'm working on a project that has a master workbook and multiple files that link to the master. The master workbook calculates values based off of a ton of information: account info, pricing info, quantity info, etc. It is a pretty massive excel file, but that is not where the problem arises.
The files that I am trying to link contain relevant information for specific accounts, including prices. The cells that contain product prices are linked to the master workbook. Example: Destination file, lets call this "Company A", Source file, lets call this "Master". In Company A's spreadsheet there is a column that contains pricing specific to that company. This pricing comes from the Master. Most of the pricing is in column C. What I have been doing is copying the relevant cell in the master and "Past Special, Paste Link" in Company A. I do this for every product in Company A's worksheet.
The goal of this is to automate pricing, so that when there are price changes or account changes, one would only have to update the master and all the separate account worksheets would populate with the correct prices. The method I've been using was working perfectly, until I had to edit the master file. I had to insert and delete a few rows from the master file. I work in excel quite often and link cells alot, so I figured that the linked cells would update to the new format, but they aren't. Ex. If a cell in Company A's worksheet is referencing F46 in the master and I delete row 44, I would like the cell to now reference F45, because that is the cell with the correct information. But instead Company A's worksheet isn't adjusting for the deleted row and is still referencing F46.
The only solutions I have found for this issue are to either have all the linked files open when I am editing the master. But seeing as there are almost 25 files, that doesn't seem very practical. The other solution is to never insert or delete rows, just to add on to the end of the master spreadsheet.

I am completely new to Macro's and VB and the macro below has been generated using the "Record Macro" function in Excel 2013 with a couple of very minor modifications based on some research I have done (hyperlink & input box). My ultimate goal is to make a copy of my "TEMPLATE", which is hidden and the copy could have a variety of names, then create an entry in my "SUMMARY" table that references cells on the newly created sheet. The new entry on the SUMMARY page should be entered in the next available row ... at the moment I need to make sure I have my cursor in the right place before I run the macro. I also want the first cell in the new "SUMMARY" row to create a hyperlink to the newly created worksheet.
The macro does what I need it to do, as long as I name the new sheet "Test", what I would like is for the Macro to recognise the name of the new worksheet and create links to that name. The rows and columns in each new sheet will remain the same, hence the R##C## part will always work.
The "SUMMARY" and "TEMPLATE" worksheet names will not (ever) change.

In VBA (Excel 2003), I'm wanting to get a reference to an ActiveX comboBox that is inside/attached to a cell.
I can iterate thru all the OLEObjects in the OLEObjects collection of the Worksheet and test the .TopLeftCell property to see if it matches my target cell. However, this seems like a long way around the problem - particularly if there's hundreds of comboboxes in the sheet.
Intuitively, I would have thought there would be a Cell.OLEObjects collection, but it appears that there isn't.
Is there a quicker and easier way to get a reference to the OLEObjects within a target cell?

The goal is to have a data validation drop down list that adjusts the File.xls name portion of the external cell reference (example given below) and return the result of the cell I am searching in the new file after updating my links.
I am trying to set up an external cell refence within my workbook for example:
='[File.xls]Tab'!$C$9
When I have tried setting the equation to pull from the drop down list in cel A1 for example:
="'["&A1&"]Tab'!$C$9"
It only shows the new file path name and not the value in the new sheet--even after updating links.
I am also attempting to do this using the my network places file path instead of the letter drive in my computer.
