View 3 RepliesFor my research in medicine I build a spreadsheet with google docs. After having received most of the data I transfered the spreadsheet into an excel file. The next thing I would like to do is to convert the words in the spreadsheet into numbers so I can calculate with them. For example: every row in column E consist of one of the two words: 'man' or 'woman'. I would like to convert the word 'man' into a '0' and the word 'woman' into a '1'. Is it possible to write a formula or function for this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm making a spreadsheet for the homes I'm looking at purchasing and wanted a way to calculate automatically which one has the most things we're looking for.
So for example, if a home has a walk in closet, it would say "yes". If it doesn't it obviously would say "no".
Is there a way to assign a number value in a totals column where "yes"=1 and "no"=2?
Or a way to make colors equal a certain value?
Where I'd make all the "yes" items green and then a green cell = 1, a yellow cell = 2, and a red cell = 3.
I've been using conventional method to do this and it's time consuming. I would like to total up 2 column. A multiply B to be exact. Below are some examples:
Table 1 - Before totaling up:
Quantity
Product
5
2 x Button A White
3
4 x Button B Pink
4
5 x Ribbon A Black
2
3 x Thread A White
6
2 x Cloth A Blue
Table 2 - After totaling up:
Quantity
Product
10
Button A White
12
Button B Pink
20
Ribbon A Black
6
Thread A White
12
Cloth A Blue
I need to have the sum of the "Quantity" multiply "Product". Or in short A x B.
And the end result need to have the number and "x" sign removed while keeping on the the products names. (2 x ) Take note it's "number" space "symbol" space.
I need to convert levels to numerical values and then: Firstly, add together two vlookup values THEN divide by 2 to get an average AND THEN see if this average AND a second, individual lookup value are above a specified another value, which may be different. IF all these criteria are set, return, "yes" if either the first or second, or both criteria are not met then "no"
Or put it another way. if lookup values A+B/2>"5" AND C>"3" then "yes", Else "no"

Note : It works for a value having two decimal places. It truncates if you have a value having more than two decimal places. Note : The following formula can convert amount one less than 1 trillion into words.
For example : $ 1,250.50 = One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty Dollars and Fifty Cents
$1,250.50 is placed in cell B5.
Paste the following formula in cell C5.

Do any formulas can converts text to an anothers words ?
sample : if any words to ( LA CA LN & TN ) than Change to "USA"
Col: A will have the abnormal text .
Col: B want to consolidate that's to "US" if match with the certeria /
In cell A1:A10 I have various words.
I am trying to convert them to a number assuming every letter = a number in sequence of the alphabet then is summed together. ie:
a=1, b=2, c=3, d=4 ............. z=26.
So the word Excel would equal 5+24+3+5+12 giving me the answer 49.
I'm looking for a formula that will rearrange a row of numbers in numerical order and by their last digit also in a numerical order, I hope it's clear enough !!!

I am looking to find the top 5 most common/repeated numbers within this range. I have found a formula to work out the largest number within the range:
=MAX(IFERROR(0+TRIM(MID(SUBSTITUTE(";"&B3,";",REPT(" ",LEN(B3))),(ROW(A$1:A$200)*LEN(B3))-1,LEN(B3))),0)) (REF http://www.excelforum.com/excel-gene...e-numbers.html)
How to modify it to work with e.g. the mode function.
I know I could separate all the numbers out using 'text to columns' but I will need to work this out regularly on large quantities of data ...
I have a sheet with thousands of rows of ID's which are made up of a series of letters, numbers, underscores and or spaces. Within the sheet there are numerous duplicates so I need to able extract the numerical element, which is the key data to be able to identify the duplicates.
The numbers I need to extract are mainly 6 and 7 digits long however don't always sit in the same place within the ID. I don't need the 3 digit number sequences, just the 6 & 7 number sequences
e.g
AB_123_456789_Jones
CD_131_7654321_Smith
AB_123_Jones_456789
I've found a formula that strips out all the numbers, however it also included the 3 digit numbers which I don't want. I've also used Text To Columns to break up the ID across a number of columns however that leaves me with 2 and sometimes 3 columns where a 6 digit ID appears
Is there a simple way to extract the number if it's a certain length? i.e. 6 or 7 digits long
Before I got this Function from your Form to convert digit to words.

I have a document that is a subject index for book that has terms that reference page numbers. The structure is for example: Employment, 587, 592, 553, 605, 233 The term is always following by comma and then space and listing of page numbers that subject reference applies. In many cases the page number references are out of sequence and I need them to be in numerical sequence. i.e. Employment, 233, 553, 587, 592, 605 There are many subject terms in index and need to check and fix sequence of page references for each.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a large database from a central appraisal district. In the database the city is stored as a numerical value. The problem is I need to convert the numerical value for the city to a text string with the actual city name. For example the values to the attached example database are as follow:
excel help forum 2.xlsx
024 = Hurst
026 = Fort Worth
025 = Euless
017 = Mansfield
013 = Keller
The issue is, I need to convert this column of numbers into the string of the actual city name. Is there some type of command, or macro that I could use to automate this process? Attached is a small example copy of the database.
In the ID column of the attached excel file whenever I convert the numbers stored as text to numbers it results in a weird transformation.
e.g. an ID of 480610141001 becomes 4.8061E+11. When I do the same process in the name column, which has similar numbers, it will give the correct result following the same process.
I have been looking through the forums and found the below code, but I have both text and numbers in the same range. I have attached an example of what I need to have converted.
Book1.xlsx
See attached file. A colleague is downloading rows of data from a website which contains a number field Excel is currently treating as Text after being pasted in. My spreadsheet includes just a sample of the many rows of data however as you can see the VALUE function refuses to convert these text values to numbers. How these might be converted and why the VALUE function refuses to work in this case?

I have a column with the month as the full word (January or February, etc.).
I need to translate the words to numbers in a separate column (1 or 2, etc.)
I haven't been able to find a function that can help perform this task. "If"
statements will not go further than 8 levels. The month function will not
recognize it because it's not part of a full date. What other options do I
have? I feel like I'm missing something obvious here...
I am attempting to create a chart from data generated outside of Excel 2003 SP2, that has been Copied and Pasted into Excel. There is no metadata associated with this data. I have created a list with the data once it has been pasted into Excel 2003 SP2.
The Workbook has five (5) worksheets, all with the default names (Sheet1, Sheet2, etc.). I paste the data into Sheet1 and reference this from the other worksheets. Sheet2 shows the charts for all the data. Sheet3, Sheet4, and Sheet5 are each for different regions, North, South and West respectively. I would like to enter the formula into Cell: Sheet5!M5 so it auto populates with the appropriate and correct information. Sheet1 information is as follows;
Column B has a header of "CreateDate" and is in the format of; 4-Jun-07
Column O has a header of "Business Unit" and has three (3) possible answers, North, South or West. **I have attached a screen shot of the two colums used named, "Columns.Used.png". I have hidden the columns in between as they contain confidential information.**
I would like a formula that gives a total of one if both criteria are met. The criteria is as follows;
IF Column B on Sheet1 equals Cell L5 on Sheet5 AND Column O on Sheet1 equals West THEN the total should appear. **I have created and attached a sample spreadsheet "Sample.Data.zip"that contains only basic data on Sheet1 and Sheet5 as those are the only sheets relevant.**
