Linking Drop Down Lists Across Worksheets

Jan 20, 2009

Using Office 2003.

I have created two workbooks, one which is a master price list (MasterPriceList.xls) and another which is a pricing sheet template that will be used to calculate many different products (Pricing.xls)

I have used a VLOOKUP across the workbooks (thanks to those who helped me with that) but I cannot get a drop list to work across two worksheets. When I enter the source in the "refers to" box, I get a notice saying that you can't use data validation across two workbooks. However, this was the same error message I got when I was incorrectly inserting the reference source for the VLOOKUP function, so I don't believe it Also, there are several tutorials on the web that say this can be done. However, none of them seem to work for me.

I cannot open the Data Validation box and get to the other open worksheet, so I can highlight the area I want, with the range I want to drop down. Until I close the data validation box, I cannot get out of that sheet. I have used cell ranges as well as named ranges.

When I type in a name, I get only the text I entered in the source reference box appearing on the sheet, i.e., the drop down box will only show "=C:Documents And SettingsAllenMy Documents, etc" it doesn't seem to recognize it as a source.

Linking Drop-down Selections To Namelists

May 26, 2007

In the attached spreadsheet NamesReference.xls, cell A1 of Initial Quality worksheet has a drop down that apparently references the Namelist? "FieldeList" which is on the List worksheet, cells A1-A14. I understand how to set up the FieldeList Nameslist, but by examining cell A1 of the Initial Quality worksheet, how can you determine that this reference exists, or how do you establish such references to Namelists, with the drop-down arrows?

Limit Drop Down List And Linking To Other Info

Feb 1, 2006

I have set up a spreadsheet that requires info to be inputted into cells. I have created drop down lists in the cells to only allow certain information to be inputted.

Allow user to use a drop down list and pick the appropriate entry, then have another drop down list in the adjacent cell that only contains items that correspond to what the first drop down entry was (i.e. company name in first drop down box, adjacent cell drop down list only contains parts made for that company). Then I would like the next column to contain the pricing of the item that was chosen in the previous cell's drop down box. Ideally, this cell would be populated automatically depending on the part chosen for the company. I am trying to create a log of parts shipped and total amount shipped.

Drop Down Box To Relatively Update Cell Link

May 20, 2007

I made drop down form controls that specify yes/no as to whether I have the documents I need for a project- when I selected yes the same row will turn grey. Each form control is set to move/resize with its cell, so it stays on top of the cell. I have the drop down form set to cell link to the cell below it in the form control settings. So it would be over cell A1 and the value of 0/1/2/ would be entered into A1. However whenever I copy the cell/row, the new form control drop down does not update its cell link by relative positioning, the new cell link is also A1 – thus both drop downs are linked together. I do NOT put absolute referencing $A$1 so I don’t know why the new copied forms don’t update and point to B1?

Why doesn’t my drop down menu update its cell link position when I copy and paste the cell it is attached to? Can form controls update their cell links via relative references (that is without the $$)?

Drop Down Cell Link Reference

Aug 28, 2007

I have 6 worksheets that are identical cosmetically. Each has the same drop down box list with the same name (dropdown1), however the cell link on each sheet is different. (ie. sheet1 dropdown1 cell link refers to a sheet ' lookup' cell $K$1, sheet2 dropdown1 cell link refers to sheet 'lookup' cell $K$2, etc.) I have the same command button in each sheet that performs the same task so I wanted to keep one module for all 6. Problem is I set a variable to the cell link in the code, and this has to be changed.

DropDownValue = Sheets("Lookup").Range("K1").Value

Is there any way I can set this variable using a property of the drop down list?

DropDownValue = dropdown1.celllink

I don't want to create 5 more duplicate modules just to change this one bit of code (I only use it this time in the code!). If there is no way to get the cell link value of the drop down, could I possibly put a worksheet change event on the lookup sheet to populate a certain static cell with the value of the last cell change?

Linking Cells By Looking Up Part Of Link In Other Cells

Dec 2, 2008

I'm wondering if there is a way of linking to cells by looking up part of the link in another cell. E.g.In Sheet1, cell A1, i have some data that I want link to from Sheet2. Normally I'd do that by using "=Sheet1!A1" in the cell in Sheet2.

But I'd like to lookup the "A1" part of the link from two different cells in Sheet 2. Something like: =Sheet1!(Text from B1 in Sheet2 AND Text from A2 in Sheet2)
or: =Sheet1!(Sheet2!B1&Sheet2!A2). So that if Sheet2!B1 would contain an "A", and Sheet2!A2 would contain a "1" the resulting link would be the correct "=Sheet1!A1"

Formula That Uses Link In A Cell To Create Offset Link

Jun 28, 2013

I have two worksheets, one with detail monthly information and one with YTD information. So let's say the three numbers I want to capture in the YTD sheet are in columns B, G and I on the monthly sheet. January's data might be in B5, G5 and I5. February's data is in B12, G12 and I12 and so on.

On the YTD sheet in cell C2 I link to Monthly!B5 and in C3 I link to Monthly!B12 so cells C2 to C13 on the YTD sheet show the monthly totals from column B on the detail sheet. On the YTD sheet, cells C20 to C31 show the monthly totals from column G on the monthly sheet, so cells G5, G12, etc. And finally, cells C40 to C51 on the YTD sheet show monthly totals form column I on the monthly sheet.

In the past I've always created all these links manually. After creating the links in C2 to C13 on the YTD sheet, is there a way to use a formula in C21 that uses the link in C2 to create a link for G5?

Populate Drop-Down Based On Another Drop-Down Choice

Oct 25, 2006

Here is what I'm trying to do:

I have 4 sheets:
1 called main
1 called states
1 called counties
1 called people

On "main" I have 1 drop down box and 1 cell:

the drop down lists the states from "states" sheet
the cell, which i would like to have as a drop down is supposed to be listing the counties in the state selected from the 1st drop down. right now it is setting the value to TRUE for testing purposes.

then when the county is selected, it will display the people in that county listed in "people". So far I can only get the 1st drop down to list the states. that's the easy part. i need to getting the counties to list in another drop down based on what state is selected.

Populate Drop-Down Based On Another Drop-Down Selection ...

Dec 5, 2007

Im a fairly basic VBA user who has just purchased the code for J-Walk's Enhanced Data Form.

On other threads in this forum I have noticed a lot of people asking how to make the contents of one drop-down box dependant on the selection in another. I am trying to do the same thing but with the criteria section of the EDF form.

Is this possible? What does give me hope is that a simple Autofilter - whilst not as aesthetically pleasing, does the job well.

Populate Drop-Down Based On Another Drop-Down Selection

Aug 7, 2008

Currently I have columns fixed or assigned to the names of insurance providers/companies.

In each column below the name of the Insurance Company, a combobox containing the plans that company offers. Choose a plan, and the rest of the column is filled in using vlookup.

Now to save space, IE opposed to having 13-15 columns one assigned to each Insurance Company/Provider. I am looking to have only 3-5 columns with a first initial combobox in which one chooses the Name of the Company/Provider, and in turn populate the original combobox and vlookup functionality I already have built in.

Here is an example of what I am working with.
